One In The Spirit May 20, 2018 9:30 a.m., Sanctuary The presence of God’s Spirit is the sign of the new believer. Yet some in the early church insisted that new believers adopt certain laws, too. Do we do the same today? We teach that grace is sufficient, yet do we expect the Holy Spirit to see to it that other people become like us? What does it mean to be one in the Spirit?

PRELUDE | Saraband Herbert Howells, composer | Chris Widomski POEM | Pentecost Fire Safiyah Fosua, author | Fiona Haworth and Bob Reed *OPENING HYMN | As a Fire Is Meant for Burning 2237 | Beach Spring *AFFIRMATION OF FAITH I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord: who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy +catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. A PENTECOST PRAYER OF CONFESSION AND PARDON Merciful and gracious God, Our hearts cry out for you to make us whole again. Even as we celebrate that you have come to dwell within us, we have sinned against you and abandoned your commandments. We have been jealous, possessive, ambivalent, and impulsive. We have not heeded your Word and we have not cherished your covenant. Help us to glorify you in all times and in all places. As our souls thirst for your living waters, quench our needs and satisfy our love. May we come back to you and be sent forth to fill the world with your mercy and grace. In the name of your son, Jesus Christ, and by the power of the Holy Spirit who is at work within us. Time of Silence “Jesus came and stood among them and said, ‘Peace be with you!’ After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, ‘Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.’ *Please rise in body or spirit. 2

In this instance, catholic means universal.

When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; If you retain the sins of any, they are retained.’” Amen. WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM (9:30) Don Marten, son of Lindsey and Kyle Marten Now it is our joy to welcome our new brother in Christ. Through baptism you are incorporated by the Holy Spirit into God’s new creation and made to share in Christ’s royal priesthood. We are all one in Christ Jesus. With joy and thanksgiving, we welcome you as a new member of the family of Christ. SUNG RESPONSE Jesus loves me still today, walking with me on my way, wanting as a friend to give light and love to all who live. Yes, Jesus loves me! Yes, Jesus loves me! Yes, Jesus loves me! The Bible tells me so.

INVITATION TO CHRISTIAN DISCIPLESHIP *CLOSING HYMN | Breathe On Me Breath of God 420 | Trentham BENEDICTION POSTLUDE | Prelude on EBENEZER Healey Willan, composer | Chris Widomski Moses Hogan (1957-2003) was a force to be reckoned with. He was born and raised in New Orleans, where sounds of jazz and gospel were all around him. But he went to the Oberlin Conservatory to study classical piano performance, and was quite successful for a while. Eventually, though, he started writing his own arrangements of traditional African American spirituals, and his rise to fame in the choral world was meteoric. Today’s “I’m Gonna Sing” is not an arrangement but an original text and tune. Listen for the spirit moving in the middle section – the tenors, altos, and sopranos mimic a growing wind. Excellent text painting on this Pentecost Sunday!

PENTECOST Pentecost is a Christian holy day commemorating the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the disciples of Jesus Christ. As recorded in the New Testament of the Bible, it was on the 50th day after Easter that the apostles were praying together and the Holy Spirit descended on them. They received the “gift of tongues” – the ability to speak in other languages – and immediately began to preach about Jesus Christ to Jewish people from all over the world who flocked to Jerusalem for the Feast of Shavuot. Christian Pentecost became not only a commemoration of the Holy Spirit’s visit but also marks the birth of the Christian Church. Christians see Pentecost as an expansion of God’s favor and care from Judaism to all peoples.

Worship Series May 19/20 -June 23/24 The church has held together for 2000 years, an almost unimaginable amount of time. One secret to its longevity is a healthy tension between tradition and innovation – between staying connected and stretching to grow. Such tension is vital to a healthy church. Like joints that attach the parts of the body together, these essential, shared convictions and obligations keep us strong as we both hold to tradition and seek new ways to innovate.
