One In The Spirit May 20, 2018 9:30 a.m., Sanctuary The presence of God’s Spirit is the sign of the new believer. Yet some in the early church insisted that new believers adopt certain laws, too. Do we do the same today? We teach that grace is sufficient, yet do we expect the Holy Spirit to see to it that other people become like us? What does it mean to be one in the Spirit?

Help us to glorify you in all times and in all places.

He was born and raised in New Orleans, where sounds of jazz and gospel were all around him. But he went to the Oberlin Conservatory to study classical piano performance, and was quite successful for a while. Eventually, though, he started writing his own arrangements of traditional African American spirituals, and his rise to fame in the choral world was meteoric. Today’s “I’m Gonna Sing” is not an arrangement but an original text and tune. Listen for the spirit moving in the middle section – the tenors, altos, and sopranos mimic a growing wind. Excellent text painting on this Pentecost Sunday!

PENTECOST Pentecost is a Christian holy day commemorating the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the disciples of Jesus Christ. As recorded in the New Testament of the Bible, it was on the 50th day after Easter that the apostles were praying together and the Holy Spirit descended on them. They received the “gift of tongues” – the ability to speak in other languages – and immediately began to preach about Jesus Christ to Jewish people from all over the world who flocked to Jerusalem for the Feast of Shavuot.

Christian Pentecost became not only a commemoration of the Holy Spirit’s visit but also marks the birth of the Christian Church. Christians see Pentecost as an expansion of God’s favor and care from Judaism to all peoples.
