2017 PROGRAM GUIDE SPECIAL EVENTS • CAMPS • SPORTS • FITNESS • DANCE • EDUCATION

GREETINGS As 2016 nears its end, I want to thank each and every one of you for another terrific year. We’ve seen the popularity of our programs, facilities and events continue to grow and that is testament to your support and value of parks and recreation. In 2017, we

BOARD OF

Commissioners

will be celebrating 50 years of service to the community. We have special programs, events and activities scheduled throughout the year, and hope you will join us in the celebration. Please refer to our website for a complete list of scheduled activities. The Park District is providing an additional communication to highlight financial reports, projects, and other useful information you may not be able to readily access through our website, annual audits, or this program brochure. We hope you find it beneficial and look forward to hearing your feedback. Along these same lines, I am proud to report that in 2015 the

Donald R. Cook President

dcook@lisleparkdistrict.org

Park District employed 433 individuals, nearly half of whom live in town. Over half of those employees are under the age of 25, making the Lisle Park District a significant employer of the community’s youth. We are pleased to provide that sort of service and proud to tout the many skills, talents, and work ethics of our youth. If you know someone looking for seasonal or part time employment that has the time, work ethic and commitment to serving others, please encourage them to apply online at lisleparkdistrict.org/jobs. Who knows, it could even lead to a career in parks and recreation – it did for me! As always, I encourage you to flip through the brochure to see all of the opportunities offered through the Park District. If you don’t see anything that appeals to you and your family, please let us know what

programs you have an interest in. It is the mission of the Lisle Park District to enrich the quality of life for people of all ages by providing constructive and creative leisure opportunities, and the best way for us to do that is to get feedback from you. Please feel free to contact me or anyone else at the Park District directly should you have any questions, comments or suggestions on how we can better serve you. On behalf of the entire Lisle Park District staff and Board of Park Commissioners, we wish you a holiday season full of good cheer with family and friends. Have a happy, healthy and active 2017! INTELLECTUAL PROGRAMS Let’s Build It! Chain Reaction in Action

Lemonade Stand Coaching

Woodridge Community Center • 2600 Center Drive, Woodridge

Lisle Recreation Center • 1925 Ohio Street, Lisle

The ball rolls down the ramp, turns the switch, that moves the post, that activates the zip-line, that knocks the ball down the ramp and into the goal! In this STEAM program, students will be building Rube Goldberg ‘Mouse Trap’ chain-reaction machines featuring levers, pulleys, and other simple machines. Engineering and physics concepts will be introduced and reinforced through hands-on, innovative lessons and creative play time. Problem solving skills and teamwork will be put to the test as the complexity of the projects increase from week to week. On the final class, there will be a building competition - How many contraptions can you connect in chain reaction? No previous experience is necessary, just a desire to learn and build. Each student will receive an award on the last day of the session, and have the opportunity to earn Energy Belts to demonstrate their learned skills! This is a cooperative program with the Woodridge Park District.

Children’s entrepreneurship is a hot extracurricular activity with today’s youth and for most kids this means lemonade stand wars this spring! This critical thinking class will foster unique ideation along with opportunities in cultivating self-esteem all surrounding the nostalgic concept of a child’s lemonade stand. The concept of a lemonade stand will receive a ‘facelift’ with exhilarating marketing and business ideas. Kids will participate in a high energy blow out brainstorm meeting and will be taught how to ‘piggyback’ on ideas, along with the way to attract positive things in life. Children will also learn about collaboration with their fellow business friends who are also trying their hand at entrepreneurship. Kids who have previously attended this class have tripled their sales at their novelty lemonade stand or have kicked off on their first try with a bang! All kids receive a lemonade themed souvenir. Lisa Lombardi Coaching will ‘meet your child’ exactly where they are in their development to allow for a fantastic experience. This is a cooperative program with the Woodridge Park District.

Sign Up To Become A Member! Lisle Teens with Character is a teen led group that is a community leader in volunteerism and philanthropy. The program is for students in grades 6–12 who reside in DuPage County who are looking to make a difference and build character. LTWC provides the opportunity to socialize with your peers, meet new people, and have a fun time at our monthly meetings and service projects. Over the past ten years, LTWC has experienced unprecedented success. The membership has grown to include 90 members, who have contributed over 22,000 hours of service to the Lisle community and raised over $110,000 for various charities since the inception of the group. LTWC has been recognized in the media locally, statewide and even nationally. The success of LTWC is due in large part to the tremendous support from the Lisle Partners for Parks Foundation. Teens and adults working together in the Lisle community are making a difference. Lisle Teens with Character (LTWC) is an affiliate group of the Lisle Park District. We realize that everyone has busy lives, so we have started to utilize a service called Remind 101 to help keep people in the loop. If you sign up for this service (which is free!), you will receive reminder texts from the group about upcoming events and activities. To sign up, text “@lisle” to 81010 or visit www.remind. com/join/lisle. You will receive a confirmation text to complete your sign up.

A.C.T. Fast Women’s Self Defense

Clarendon Hills Community Center • 315 W. Chicago Avenue Personal tragedy in the form of sexual assault of a former girlfriend led extreme fighting champion, Mark Streator to an in-depth study of women`s self-defense programs. Finding many of them inadequate, and even leading to a false sense of security, he created the A.C.T. F.A.S.T. seminar. This seminar is taught in a single session format rather than a 6 or 8-week program, because life happens, and missing a session could mean missing critically important information. There is a strong emphasis on how to develop the mentality needed not to panic, freeze and be incapacitated if confronted by a bigger, stronger, violent predator. • Learn to tap into buried survival instincts that we all possess • Learn 30+ tactics and techniques that can help make you safer • True stories will help you avoid serious judgmental mistakes • Learn proven effective fighting techniques from any position • Learn why you never want to eliminate fear….plus much more! Instructor Mark Streator used a serious in-depth study, critical thinking, logic and practical experience gained from 50+ full contact fights in Boxing, Kickboxing, Thai Boxing, Savate, San Shou, Bare Knuckle Karate, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Extreme Fighting to create this one of a kind seminar. Strength and Bone Density

Lisle Recreation Center Athletic Space • 1925 Ohio Street, Lisle There is scientific evidence that shows the benefits of weight-bearing exercise on bone density. We reach peak bone density in our twenties and begin to lose it in our thirties. This is especially true without proper exercise, diet and with a family history of osteoporosis. This class takes you through a wide variety of light weight bearing exercises to help you stay strong and healthy. Our instructor, Jen Young, holds a Master’s Degree in Exercise Science and conducted her graduate studies in the effects of exercise on bone density. Chicago Flower and Garden Show Navy Pier • Chicago, IL

Vera Bradley & Shipshewana Overnight Indiana

What could be more fun than a Vera Bradley girls’ getaway combined with a day in Amish Shipshewana, IN?!

The roots of the Chicago Flower and Garden Show can be traced as far back as 1847! The show, held each March at Chicago’s Navy Pier is an experience for the senses, invoking memories of spring after a typically long and cold Chicago winter. It may feel like winter outside, but inside the garden show it’s spring! There will be many professionally designed gardens to walk through, beautiful floral arrangements, and over 100 vendors showcasing their wares in the vendor mall. Dining options are available within the Festival Hall area as well as at numerous restaurants within Navy Pier. Fee includes transportation and show admission.

Vera Bradley bags and accessories are all the rage for females of every age. Whether it’s their bright, cheery colors, functional designs, versatility or lightweight feel, we just love them and can’t get enough! We are going to the annual Vera Bradley Sale, held at the Ft. Wayne Coliseum, where you will find a huge assortment of retired and overstock patterns and products at discount prices. We’ll receive VIP treatment with special entry tickets entitling us to bypass the line, have a separate entrance and check-out area, and a lovely hospitality room to relax in. Bring your gift list to take advantage of this great sale. After the sale we will head to the Essenhaus Inn for the night. Amish hospitality is found throughout, from the inviting lobby to the quilts on the beds. Dinner on your own is available at The Essenhaus.

DEPARTURE TIME: 10:00A from Senior Center APPROX. RETURN TIME: 4:30P

The following day we’ll visit an Amish quilt shop, a chime making shop, and have lunch in a private Amish home. We’ll have a full Thresher’s meal and even have the opportunity to make our own cinnamon rolls to bring home. We will also tour Annie Oakley Perfumery, the only perfumery in the United States! Enjoy a rare chance to view a perfume studio and experience a world collection of natural and organic fragrances. Learn how fragrances are created, blended and bottled. A fun-filled two days for sure!

You won’t want to miss this special performance of the Purdue University Varsity Glee Club. With integrity, passion, unparalleled showmanship and attention to every detail, the impressive young men of the Glee Club have proudly served as ambassadors of the university with honor and dignity for more than 115 years. Founded in 1893, this select ensemble has entertained on behalf of Purdue University for campus, community, state, national and international events. This dynamic musical troupe employs a versatile repertoire including gospel, vocal jazz, swing, contemporary hits, romantic ballads, classical choral selections, barbershop, folk melodies, patriotic standards, familiar opera choruses, country and novelty tunes, and utilizes small groups and outstanding soloists to further enhance each show. Prior to the performance, we will have lunch in the dining room – spring mix salad, turkey divan, rice pilaf, broccoli, and chocolate raspberry cake. Fee includes transportation, lunch and performance.

NOTE: Fee includes motorcoach transportation with a boxed lunch enroute; Vera Bradley admission ticket; double occupancy non-smoking hotel room (single room available additional +$65); day two breakfast and Thresher’s Meal; Shipshewana tours and admissions as detailed above; and some surprises! 50+ PROGRAMS

Senior Yoga

Strength and Bone Density

Sign up to join this very popular yoga class! The benefits of yoga include improved strength, flexibility, and balance. A chair will be used for the first half of the class to perform various yoga poses. The second half of the class will include poses on the floor. Participants using the floor should bring a yoga mat. You do not need to participate in the floor exercise to join this class. Come on out and give it a try!

There is scientific evidence that shows the benefits of weight-bearing exercise on bone density.
