Introduction This idea began very simply for me. While attending a workshop at Children’s Pastors’ Conference in January, 1995, the leader handed everyone a small bag of animal crackers and said, “This place would be a zoo without our volunteers.” I began haunting the candy aisles at my local grocery store and soon started looking at cereal, cookies, and many other foods with new eyes. The majority of the ideas you will find inside are original. Each Sunday of the year and on the Wednesday nights we have classes, every volunteer has a treat on his door. I simply choose one idea, copy it on colored paper, cut them apart, and attach the appropriate item to the paper. I write a volunteer’s name and room number where he will be serving on each paper and tape the treats to the correct door. To keep track of which treats I’ve already used, I attach a self-stick note with the date written on it to the appropriate page. There are plenty, so you shouldn’t have to repeat any idea for at least a year. Don’t feel you must do this every week. Do what works in your unique circumstance. Use them for special events such as VBS, volunteer appreciation events, or anytime you want to give someone a lift. Stick one on your senior pastor’s door! To help keep cost down, I generally use the snack-size candy bars and try to stock up during sales (especially after Halloween, Christmas, and Easter). Food that doesn’t come individually wrapped, like sunflower seeds and potato sticks, I place in a snack-size plastic bag. I have found this to be an inexpensive and creative way to constantly let my staff know they are appreciated. I affirm approximately forty people each week at a cost of about four or five dollars. The volunteers look forward to seeing what is on the door each week, and folks who are not volunteering often come to see what the treat is for the week. So, I am also promoting my children’s ministry! Have fun with these ideas! Be creative and add some of your own. You can take these pages and add some fun clip art to them to jazz things up. Don’t worry if you only have white paper—just add some color with markers. Who knows, maybe we will run into each other in a candy aisle someday! Celebrating children,

Susan
