a place to stay Establishments featured in this guide have been officially inspected by the AA, or Quality in Tourism (QIT).

Some properties are currently awaiting inspection and their commitment to quality is highlighted by ‘inspection pending’. The quality of accommodation, rather than just the facilities on offer, comes under the spotlight in the national grading scheme of the QIT and AA. These organisations jointly ensure their inspectors assess accommodation to the same consistently high standards. Accommodation taking part in the scheme is visited every year and awarded an official rating.

Hotels Hotels are given a rating from one to five stars. One star means an acceptable level of quality, services and range of facilities. The more stars awarded, the higher the quality and range of facilities and service on offer.

Guest Accommodation This includes inns, guesthouses, B&Bs and farmhouses. These are awarded one to five stars. The more stars awarded, the higher the quality of cleanliness, hospitality, bedrooms, bathrooms and food standards.

Special Accolades In addition to the grading scheme, the QIT and AA each have their own special awards given to accommodation that meets the highest standards of quality in specific areas. Gold and Silver awards are given by the QIT to accommodation which meets the highest levels of quality in areas which guests say are important.

Gourmet Breakfast New for 2010 – given to hotels and B&Bs with high scores for breakfast.

Families Walkers Cyclists Welcome Welcome Welcome Self-Catering These properties are awarded from one to five stars depending on the level and quality of facilities offered.

Enjoy England Excellence Gold Award

Camping and Caravan Parks These are given a rating from one to five stars depending on the quality of service, cleanliness, environment and facilities.

Welcome Host A nationally recognised customer care initiative which aims to promote the highest standards of service and a warm welcome for all visitors.

Tastes of Lincolnshire Where locally produced foods are used and enjoyed. Prices Prices shown for accommodation such as hotels and guest houses are for ‘the lowest price single room to the highest price double room’, per night, including breakfast unless stated otherwise. Self-catering prices shown are for ‘low season to high season’, per unit, per week. Prices and facilities can change, so please check when you book. You will usually need to confirm your booking in writing and you may be asked for a deposit, so do ask for the booking conditions and cancellation policy before sending a deposit. Complaints If you have a complaint, it’s always best to first talk to the accommodation owner who will usually do their best to resolve any problems. Properties inspected by the QIT or AA have an official complaints procedure to follow. Further advice available from Stamford Tourist Information Centre.

stamford stamford where to visit in

Historical, religious & architectural heritage.

Proclaimed by Sir Walter Scott as “the finest stone town in England”, Stamford was declared a conservation area in 1967. It has over 600 listed buildings of mellow limestone in the town centre including five medieval churches, all real gems. You must not miss the Arts Centre; built in 1768 it is one of the oldest provincial theatres in England, which holds many events throughout the year, the Steam Brewery, Browne’s Hospital and the 12th century ruins of St Leonard’s Priory.

Stamford is a bustling, prosperous, market town. It has a wide range of shops, hostelries and attractions. Our main street market is on a Friday with a smaller Saturday market and once a fortnight there is a Farmers’ Market.

They are all worth a look and you may well find an event going on at one of these places or on the Town Meadows, in this ‘town of festivals’. Whilst you are in the area you can enjoy a visit to Burghley House or nearby Rutland Water.

So whether the tranquil river walks, fine Georgian buildings or the more modern attractions captivate you, Stamford has something to charm everyone. The popular Town Trail takes you through Stamford exploring passageways, main thoroughfares and market squares.

There is a thriving high street with coffee shops, restaurants and a vast range of retailers to tempt you.

Stamford Market

Stamford market is held every Friday in Broad Street and Ironmonger Street and has over 100 stalls for bargain hunters to explore. Regarded as one of the finest weekly markets in the East Midlands.

Stamford market has a wide assortment of goods on sale to please even the most discerning shopper. Red Lion Square hosts a small rural market every Saturday and a Farmers’ Market

every two weeks which offers quality sourced local and Lincolnshire produce.

the deepings Southern borders of Lincolnshire.

Originally part of an Anglo Saxon settlement these are now thriving communities with many beautiful old buildings. The church of St. James has a little of the original priory features but is a fine building with an elegant spire. St Guthlac Church in Market Deeping still retains some of its Anglo Saxon features and has a tower that was built by Margaret Beaufort, the mother of Henry VII. There is the fine church of St. Andrew at West Deeping and the remains of a water mill (now a private dwelling). There are the remains of two locks on the river in Deeping

St James. These formed part of a navigation of the river Welland that was constructed in the 17th century. This, together with a six-and-a half-mile canal that connected the Deepings with Stamford, carried many boats and resulted in much wealth for the merchants of the Deepings. The Stamford canal was in use from 1673 until 1863 and was probably the earliest, post-Roman commercial canal in England. Two local hostelries The Bull and the Deeping Stage in Market Deeping were originally coaching inns.
