History As a young man in Montreal, Fleuri Perron heard Bishop Grandin speak of Western Canadian settlements like St. Albert. At the age of 17, Perron first moved west to Egg Lake, 10 miles north of St. Albert, and then finally settled in St. Albert in 1896. For the next 30 years, Perron would have a significant impact on the community. Once established in St. Albert, Perron bought several local businesses, including the Windsor Hotel, which he renovated extensively; the general store located on main street (now known as Perron Street); and at the turn of the century, he opened the Perron Brickyard, employing 20 local men and operating until 1932.

After working as a businessman and entrepreneur, Perron began his career in politics in 1904 by serving on the first St. Albert Town Council. He was elected as the second mayor of St. Albert in 1908 and served three terms. Additionally, Perron was the first Vice-President of the St. Albert Board of Trade, and the first President of the Alberta French Canadian Association.

Following his death in August 1931, his son Eugene Perron continued the family tradition and purchased the general store business that his father ran for the last years of his life. The downtown district of St. Albert experienced a period of great expansion at the beginning of the 20th century. By 1908, the downtown area featured two banks and hotels, several retail and service outlets, as well as a blacksmith, drugstore, and butcher shop. In the following years, the Dawson Block was completed and housed a bakery, bank, millinery shop, a drug store, and many other businesses. St. Albert’s main street was renamed Perron Street in 1967 to recognize the impact and influence that Fleuri Perron had on the local business community and St. Albert as a whole. Today, the Perron District is the heart of St. Albert, featuring historical buildings, colorful festivals, the St. Albert Farmers’ Market, as well as numerous shopping, dining, and cultural attractions.

Attractions

Father Lacombe Chapel

Mission Hill is home to the Father Lacombe Chapel, Alberta’s oldest surviving building, built in 1861. Father Albert Lacombe and the Métis constructed a log building to serve the then new St. Albert Roman Catholic Mission, which became the centre of the thriving French speaking Metis settlement of St. Albert. Today, the chapel has been restored to look much as it did in the early 1860s. When you visit the historic site, costumed interpreters take you on a tour of the chapel; crypt, where Father Lacombe and Bishop Grandin are buried; grotto and through the cemetery. Tours are available in English and French from May to September. Education programs and special events are offered. For more information, visit museeheritage.ca

Founders’ Walk

Discover St. Albert's rich history by walking in the Perron District! Opening on July 24th, 2011 to coincide with the 150th anniversary of the St. Albert Mission, the Founders’ Walk is an interactive way to celebrate the Perron District’s unique history and culture. Beginning at the Clock Tower and finishing at the Mission, the Founders’ Walk has nine story panels, seating areas and a beautifully landscaped trail climbing up to the Mission from downtown. For more information, visit stalbert.ca/founders-walk

Art in Public Places

Explore the Perron District and discover great art pieces including sculptures, art benches and murals, including artist Lewis Lavoie's Mural Mosiac (pictured left), a project bringing together multiple artists in a 24-hour paint-a-thon fundraiser for a local charity. Art in Public Places, an initiative started by the City of St. Albert's Cultural Services, creates engaging and surprising spaces for community activity and interaction. Attractions Little White School House

Travel back in time with a visit to the Little White School House, located on Seven Hills adjacent to the Perron District. The Little White School House, originally known as Father Jan School, was constructed in 1946 and began operating in 1948. It was built by the Alberta government to accomodate a growing student population after World War II. The design of the school is typical for its time. Few school houses of this era have been preserved as well, making it a significant historical building to the city. For more information, please call 780-459-4404 or visit museeheritage.ca and click on Heritage Sights

Art Gallery of St. Albert

Located in the historic Banque d’Hochelaga building, the Art Gallery of St Albert features contemporary and community exhibitions, brought to life with public programs and events. Education programs offer visual arts opportunities for thousands of children, youth and adults throughout the year. Visit the Gallery Shop for unique one-of-a kind items made by Canadian artists. The Art Gallery of St Albert’s mandate is to provide enriching educational experiences that celebrate visual culture and artistic achievement through research, exhibition and interpretation. Rock’n August

Snowflake Festival

Rock’n August is an international car show and music festival held in the Perron District. With hundreds of classic cars on display and great music, the week-long event is a major fundraiser for Diabetes research and education.

Each year in the Perron District, St. Albert welcomes the Christmas Season with the annual Snowflake Festival. At 6:30 p.m. dozens of spectators watch as the lights on the big spruce tree in front of the Community Hall are turned on. Outside, the hall is decorated with an ice sculpture and inside, families can find Santa and activities like coloring, gingerbread men decorating, and more.

Friday night, the streets of St. Albert are packed with thousands of eager spectators viewing the 400+ classic cars as they parade past City Hall. The party continues as the stage is filled with some of the best musical entertainment of the year. For more information visit www.rocknaugust.com

The Perron District is also busy with crafts, story-time, fire performers at St. Albert Place, and live reindeer and wagon rides on Perron Street. People are encouraged to bring food donations for the Fill-A-Bus charity, run by St. Albert Transit drivers. For more information, visit www.perrondistrict.com
