February 2012

Chair’s Letter Dear Old Girls,

Dates for your Diary

I am delighted to be writing to you this month to update you on events and activities planned for 2012. Alumni Officer

OGA 15 May Committee Meeting Sports Day 27 June Event Reunion Event

OWLs’ 23 Nov Lunch/AGM

It’s been an exciting few months for the OGA, not least because we have taken on board a part-time Alumni Officer to support the work of the OGA Committee. Louise Potter joined us in October and she is available to help in a number of ways for example, organising a reunion, helping you to sign up to webALUMNUS and adding your news on to webALUMNUS. She will also be helping to produce the eagerly awaited 2012 magazine. Louise can be contacted on oga@stalbans-high.herts.sch.uk webALUMNUS Our new website was launched in July 2011 and we are all very excited about its potential as a communication tool. If you have registered, thank you. If not, I urge you to spend a few minutes of your time to register and explore what the site has to offer. Please see page 2 for further information on what webALUMNUS can do for you! Magazine I am delighted to announce that we will be producing a Magazine in the summer of 2012 which we hope will be the best yet. We always enjoy hearing your news and stories and, if you are interested in contributing any articles or would like to tell us your news, please email this to Louise Potter or post it to her c/o St Albans High School for Girls by 30 March. AGM and Reunion Our 2011 AGM and Reunion on 9 September was very successful. In a change to previous years, we held an evening reception with bucks fizz and nibbles, with tours of the school and the AGM. The class of 1981 leavers came back in force and followed the school event with a dinner at a restaurant in St Albans. A very good time was had by all. In view of the success of the new format, we have decided to hold another evening reception at the school on Friday 14 September 2012. We hope that as many of you as possible will be able to come and urge you both to reserve the date and to think about encouraging your friends to join us. Now is a good time for the leavers of 1952, 1962, 1972, 1982, 1992 and 2002 in particular to think about organising a reunion. Please see page 4 of this Newsletter for details. OWLs’ Lunch Our 2011 OWLs’ Lunch was held on 16 November at Wheathampstead House when we had a fascinating talk by Mother Clark on ‘The Spiritual life of the School’. Whilst the OWLs were visiting the school, Miss Tudor Jones and Mrs June Moran (née Martin) took time out to visit the Year 6 girls to talk to them about Britain during World War Two. Careers This example of the collaboration between the OWLs and the school illustrates just how much we, as Old Girls, can continue to contribute to the life of the school and it demonstrates that it can be a rewarding process for us just as much as for the young people that we are supporting.

We are keen to involve the Old Girls in assisting girls currently at the High School. It doesn’t necessarily have to take up too much of your time, it could; •

be a short email, offering information on the university course that you attended

mean asking your employer if there is any work experience available

involve providing careers advice to current pupils

mean attending Careers Fairs

be giving more informal talks for small groups

potentially involve one to one mentoring

If you would like to offer assistance in whatever way you can, you will find further information on page 3. I would like to draw your attention to the Joint Schools’ Choral Society concert which takes place on Wednesday 21 March 2012. This year, the programme includes the Mozart Requiem and Handel’s Zadok the Priest. It promises to be a wonderful evening and we would like to encourage as many of you as possible to come. Tickets are available from the High School. Finally, I would encourage you to go to www.stahs.org.uk so that you can keep in touch with all that is happening at the High School. I hope that we will see many of you over the coming months. Best wishes

Heather Greatrex
