During a critique my junior year at Wentworth, a previous professor told me, “this is definitely a ‘Stephen Akerblom’ project”. Whether or not he meant it in a good way, I was satisfied with the fact that I created a brand thrugh my architecture. While all of the projects vary in program, siting, and scale I was able to create a style of architecture that was my own.

Tectonics Studio Where the forces of tension + compression inspired thoughtful explorations.

Landscape Studio Worked with physical models to develop an understanding of grading and topographical manipulation.

Comprehensive Design Never let go of the concept even in the most detailed drawings.

5 the Tectonic Studio This project rounded out semester, in which we were challanged to consider the forces and movements of a bicycle and translate it into architecture. The initial sketch Conceptual_Sketch Bicycle_Movement started very simply, documenting the axis and range of motion of a cyclist and then slowly transformed this abstract sketch into the Conceptual_Plan 6 that considers scale, pedestrian flow, and building structure. As the project developed, as did the sketches, Tectonic_Exploration brings the project closer to real architecture with steel I-beams, bolted connections, foundation, and an enclosure. The final products of this project can be seen in Ground_floor, Cross Section, and Long_Section, showcasing the progress of the initial concept.

Section_Model Physical_Modeling

School in the Woods The first assignment of Landscape Studio was to familiarize ourselves with topography and the importance of integrating site. The project started through the Section_Model to get a true sense of the effect of the topography. These models were then translated into the Rendered_Section and then finally the painstaking task of drawing the Site_Plan to ensure proper sloping requirements for the driveway + parking lot, as well as proper drainage away from the structure.

In typical German efficiency, the prompt for this project was quite simple: create an addition to an existing theater building and performing arts school. Both of the existing buildings are outdated; one from the 1950’s and the other from 1970’s. My decision was that this site needed a new image, something exciting and bold to bring new life to the school. The final products are a series of highly detailed construction documents that have taken the very simple initial concept to as close as one can get to a realized project while still in school.

ARCHITECTURE HK_MU HongKong_Micro-Units

Hong Kong Micro-Units In the first semester of the Master’s of Architecture program, we began with a Special Topics Travel Studio. My studio went to Hong Kong and focused on the use of film to capture the life of the city. My video explored the various layers of the walls in Hong Kong. Wall_Layers is a 2-D adaptation of my film, that suggests the layers of history and cultural significance of each layer of the wall. Wall_Replica is an attempt to recreate the texture and feel of the wall. Site_Plan + Cross_Section attempt to translate these ideas into something that reads more clearly as an architectural project. Axonometrics express the ideas of layering from a unit scale to the scale of the entire building. It is the continuity of the layering process from the most abstract replica of the wall to the detailed assembly of the entire building that gives this project strength.

I have recently graduated with my Masters of Architecture ‘13 (with Distinction) after receiving my Bachelor of Science in Architecture ‘12 (Cum Laude), both from Wentworth Institute of Technology. I came into the field of architecture because I had always considered myself an artist with attention to detail. While I would ultimately hope to become a registered Architect, I have found that the skills I have developed over the years have allowed me to become much more than that. My education has trained me, not as an architect, but as a designer with the ability to take on any challenges. I have used these skills to develop myself as a Photographer, a Graphic Designer, an Architect, and a City Planner. I have taken on all these challenges with confidence and have been proud of all the outcomes. As I begin on the path to a career, I am open to any new challenges and welcome opportunities to begin working in the fields of:
