C-mine

Tourist Hit

The headframes of the Winterslag mine mark the Genk skyline. They symbolize the rich mining history that have not only coloured the city, but they have also become the landmarks of C-mine. The site is a successful marriage between past and present: it combines the beautiful industrial heritage and stories of the mine, with contemporary creativity and experience. Young and old can explore underground, over ground, upside down, or just wander around filled with curiosity.

Up until 2014, the scent artist Peter Cupere put on an unusually stimulating work at C-mine exhibition. Then, it will be the turn of another artistic talent.

C-MINE, Monumental Since opening in 2005, C-mine has been a stimulating hive for entrepreneurs, artists, students and culture lovers. On the former site of Winterslag, respect for the industrial past went alongside the contemporary artistic activity. Wander around, look inside or just enjoy the monumental architecture at the site.

Hoge Kempen National Park

Kattevennen Gateway: dreams of the cosmos ...

Limburgers have a folksong which starts with ‘Waar in ‘t bronsgroen eikenhout’ (Where in the bronze green oak wood) for a reason. The Hoge Kempen National Park is the largest nature reserve in Flanders, accounting for more than 50 square kilometres of heath, water and pine forests. There are about 750,000 visitors a year to the park, thus setting an example for the whole world. One of the five gateways is in Genk, in Kattevennen. You will discover the green in all its glory: on foot, by bike, on horseback, whilst playing mini-golf or even on a spaceship.

football and powerful stories In Genk, there used to be three coalmines: in addition to Zwartberg and Winterslag, there was also the Waterschei mine. The Mine Depot is full of stories from the coal pit. However if you mention Genk, you certainly going to mention football. The Racing Genk stadium is in Waterschei. Every season, 25,000 supporters go crazy here. Why not come and feel the passion sizzle in the stands.

The Poles, Italians, Turks and Moroccans. They all came to work in the mines and they all brought their families, languages and customs with them. Mothers and kitchens moved as well. The result is that even today you can still taste the many different cultures in Genk. The Vennestraat, the Stalenstraat and the Hoevenzavellaan run along the former mining sites and are known for their Italian, Greek, and Turkish restaurants. In short, their multicultural cuisines. Genk is a young and sprawling city with a compact, modern centre. Three covered shopping centres and shopping streets will provide you with 400 businesses, department stores as well as exclusive boutiques The oldest covered shopping centre in the country is being renovated and will be open in 2014. However you do not have to wait long for the ‘shopping tour’ and then have a blowout in one of the many brasseries. The large, handsomely built library is worth a visit.
