CULTURAL SERVICES PROGRAM GUIDE 2012-2013 Breakdancing, painting, pottery, drama camps, and more...

It is only through education and art – through music, through books, through theatre – that we will find the wisdom to trade hate for compassion, to trade competition for cooperation. Education and the fine arts engage the human mind, forcing us to think in new ways, forcing us to use our most powerful tool for progress: our imagination. Lois Hole

Cultural expression is an integral component of our community. Cultural programs strengthen civic pride, enhance our quality of life, bolster economic development, and play a key role in St. Albert’s prosperous future. From the maintenance of creative spaces in our beautiful art-filled city, to presenting an astoundingly successful annual Children’s Festival, the Cultural Services Department continues to provide engaging creative outlets to individuals of all ages to experience and enjoy throughout the year.

These classes facilitate an understanding and appreciation of the visual and performing arts in the community through the encouragement, discussion, and interaction of participants enrolled in the programs, along with providing professional development opportunities for local practicing artists.

Performing Arts We are proud to announce that our Performing Arts classes are now being programmed by Janice Flower, St. Albert Children’s Theatre Director. We will continue to offer such favourites as Musical Theatre and Improv classes, and are excited to add to our line-up classes in Acting and Breakdancing and some special first-time classes for 3-5 year olds. In the upcoming months, we look forward to new offerings in more specific areas as well as more programming for younger participants.

It’s an exciting time!

Musical Theatre Exploration (6-19 years) Taught by SACT alumni Arielle Ballance and Madelaine Knight, these classes will focus on performance skills and technique in all three areas of musical theatre: acting, singing and movement. The sessions are designed for individuals with and without previous training. If you love to sing and would like to develop your skills so that you can become a “triple threat”, these classes are for you. AGES

Performing Arts Improvisation Classes (10-19 years)

Muzik & Make Believe (3 – 5 years)

Taught by Byron Martin, this madcap theatrical genre can be funny, serious, or just plain silly. Teaching you to think on your feet, improvisation is a great confidence booster and will help to develop your acting skills as will as your “life” skills. Classes are for children and youth aged 10 – 19 years.

These are new classes for 3-4 and 5 years taught by Eryn Lemiski and Jamie Jukna. We encourage the parent’s to participate especially in the 3-4 year old class. Classes will include some movement, some singing and creative play. Imagination and storytelling games will help to lay the foundation of these classes for the youngest of our participants.

Breakdancing (11 – 19 years) This is a brand new class taught by Byron Martin, offering an introduction to “breaking”. Covering top rock, footwork, freezes, power, style, rhythm and musicality, this class is different from the standard hip-hop fare that is usually offered. It is much more physically demanding and of course, has been popularized by the hit TV show, So You Think You Can Dance. NOTE: A waiver will need to be signed prior to the start of session.
