PATRONAL FESTIVAL. The Feast of the Patron Saint John Baptist falls this year on Sunday, the last Sunday in June. The Services will be as follows :— Holy Communion, 7 and 8 ; Matins, 11, Preacher, the Rev. Neville Lovett, Rector of S. Mary's, Southampton, and Rural Dean; Evensong, 6.10, Preacher the Rev. G. T. Trepte, Rector of Exbury.
All are asked to make their Communion on this day or during the week following. There has recently been published a very useful little book called “Death and Life." It consists of letters from the correspondence of a Parish Priest dealing with the state of the soul after death, the meaning of “The Communion of Saints", Clairvoyance, and Spiritualism. It may prove of real use and help to some people at the present time. A copy has been placed in the bookshelf at the west end of the Church, but it must not be taken away. The price of the book is 2/6. It was decided at the Meeting on April 28th not to print the accounts this year owing to the increased cost. A copy of the accounts which were presented and passed at that Meeting is to be seen in the porch. At the time that the new Cemetery was consecrated, notice was given that no artificial flowers under glass would be allowed. To avoid disappointment, that notice is now repeated: and it applies also to the Churchyard for the future. !

The Anglican Church in Brazil Another article in a series about the Anglican Communion, by Edgar Ruddock I don't suppose you would naturally associate Brazil and the Anglican Church! If you thought about it at all, which you may not have done, you would probably have thought Brazil was entirely Roman Catholic. And you might be forgiven for thinking that, for Catholicism is by far the largest and strongest church in South America. But there is a small, and thriving, Anglican Church spread across that vast country, the size of Europe, and more. When the Spanish and Portuguese colonists moved into South America from around the fifteenth century, they brought their religion alongside their culture and their power. Like so many colonial powers, including Britain, their treatment of local people and cultures was by our stands appalling, violent and destructive. But Catholicism was established, especially in the coastal areas, and any centres of mining, and then agriculture. But there were vast tracts of the land that remained unchurched, with local folk following their traditional religions, even though much of their rich culture had been destroyed. When the later missionary movements sprang up, it was the North Americans who evangelised much of rural Brazil. By the end of the nineteenth century, many of them were Episcopalians, their equivalent of Anglicans. Eventually the American Church established Brazil as one of its foreign Provinces, and they funded it, trained the clergy, and established the institutions. After a lengthy transition process, In 1982 the Igreja Episcopal Anglicana do Brasil (IEAB), the Anglican Church of Brazil, gained its full autonomy as a church within the Anglican Communion. It now has ten dioceses, trains its own leaders, and makes a significant contribution to the life of the global church.
For example, because it is Portuguese speaking, it has been in a position to help the fledgling churches in Angola and Mozambique, also with Portuguese backgrounds, by helping train their clergy, and enabling them to be less isolated as non English speakers within the Communion. USPG has been instrumental in facilitating this process. One of the dioceses covers the entire Amazon basin - one of the most crucial lungs of our planet. How does a tiny church witness to Christ in such a vast place? The Church there has focussed on standing alongside indigenous peoples who are being driven off the land by loggers representing both big companies, and the vast illegal timber traders. This is courageous and dangerous work - the bishop has often received death threats. They have also been developing strong teaching about environmental care and protection, and contribute to wider global advocacy around these issues. In the big cities, like Rio, San Paolo, Brasilia or Porto Alegre, the church has a very varied ministry. They attract members who are disillusioned with Catholicism on the one hand, or Pentecostalism on the other, to provide a lively, welcoming church that combines dignity in worship with informality and spontaneity too. They do a lot of work with young people, especially trying to address some of the massive issues to do with drugs and violence in the favellas - the vast slums often creeping up the sides of mountains in and around the cities.
Pray for Brazil! It is emerging as a driver of the Latin economies, but has many political and social challenges, driven by poverty and inequality. Pray for this small but faithful church, that it will continue to find meaningful ways of living the life of Christ in a fast changing, challenging environment. The pictures in this article reflect in order, an interpretation of the Fall, and of the Last Supper, part of an art project in the Anglican Church in The City of God, near Rio, one of the most notorious slum areas of Brazil; a group of children being cared for in a church-run day care centre; and a late night street Mass, held in down-town Rio, for homeless people.

If you would like us to pray for you, or someone you love, please write your name and any other information you may like to share on one of the paper fish.
