Celebrating 50 Years Dear St. Catherine’s Family,

What an amazing year our 50th anniversary has been. The 50th provided us an opportunity to look back at all the things for which we are grateful. We were thrilled that Sr. Edna Ann was able to join us in many of the festivities and knew that Sr. Shirley was there in spirit also. The best gift the year brought was the reconnection with many alumni and families who were instrumental in carrying the school forward to what it is today. The willingness of so many to give of themselves so that others might also benefit from an educational opportunity that supports the expansion of the mind and the development of the human spirit was evidenced in the support received. The alumni shared their stories and many attributed their successes in life to their time spent at St. Catherine’s. They have validated why we are here. We were fortunate to have His Eminence, Cardinal DiNardo, celebrate Mass to start the year at St. Catherine’s, during which he acknowledged the value of the Montessori approach and congratulated St. Catherine’s for implementing it so well for 50 years. We were also honored by the presence of Dr. Vogel, Superintendent of Catholic Schools, who joined us for the 50th anniversary gala as well as our groundbreaking ceremony at Spring Fling. Dr. Vogel repeatedly expressed her admiration of the spirit of the St. Catherine’s community. The 50th has culminated with the beginning of construction for the needed classrooms thanks to the thoughtful generosity of our many families, alumni families, grandparents, friends and foundations – all who understand that educating our children and guiding the formation of their character is what will ultimately contribute to a healthy society. As we close out the first 50 years of our community's vibrant and rich history, we look forward to the next chapters of our journey. Knowing that we carry forward all that we have learned, shared, and cared for as a community, we look forward to the next 50 years and what we can accomplish together In gratitude for a lovely 50th year, Susan Tracy Head of School

On To The Next 50 Years Dear St. Catherine's Community,

At the PSO Spring Fling we gathered for fellowship, to celebrate the culmination of 50 years as a growing and thriving community and to host a groundbreaking ceremony for our campus expansion. As I sank the shovel into ground, I realized how many hours of dedicated service by faculty, staff, board, current families, grandparents and alumni families were involved to make the expansion a reality. I remember thinking, as we looked upon all those gathered, that it seemed so long ago that we decided to launch a Capital Campaign, “Building on the Legacy”. Under the leadership of Deborah Gremillion and Kristina Baizan Devereux, the Capital Campaign committee was successful in securing the funds necessary to get us to the point that we could move forward to restore the library and expand our main campus. We are now scheduled to complete these building projects by summer 2018. Thank you to everyone who has contributed in many ways to making this a reality for our children and those that come after. It has been the guiding principle at St. Catherine’s to honor the vision of Sister Edna Ann and Sister Shirley and to pay it forward for future generations. Parents have worked tirelessly knowing that their own children may not benefit from an improvement, update or change. But they know that someone came before them to provide the environment in which their own children are learning, thriving and growing closer to God. So when I looked out upon the room at the 50th Anniversary Gala, chaired by Cathy Crath, Alison Jefferies and Shannon Mann, it was so clear to me that many people love and cherish St. Catherine’s Montessori. I saw current families and alumni families enjoying fellowship and a great time. I saw Sister Edna Ann surrounded by those who love her and I realized that this wonderful community is embracing the next 50 years with joy and excitement. Here’s to the next 50 years! Nathaniel Martinez President of the Board of Directors

Building on the Legacy S T. C AT H E R I N E ’ S M O N T E S S O R I C A P I TA L C A M PA I G N The final year of the Capital Campaign, “Building on the Legacy,” concluded in dramatic fashion with a groundbreaking ceremony held April 29, 2017. This milestone was also significant because it took place on the feast day of the school’s patron saint, St. Catherine of Siena. St. Catherine’s Montessori Dominican Founder, Sr. Edna Ann Hebert OP, participated in the groundbreaking ceremony and joyfully joined the community in celebration of a new era for the school she started over 50 years ago in 1966. The Capital Campaign committee, led by Deborah Gremillion and Kristina Baizan Devereux, successfully achieved a three year fundraising campaign goal of $3,000,000 to complete the new spaces: two Upper Elementary Classrooms, a meditation garden and the restoration of the library to its original space, now occupied by a Lower Elementary classroom. Many thanks to all the committee members who dedicated themselves to making this project a reality for the children.

“It was a great pleasure to work on the Capital Campaign. It was the first time we have worked together and a lasting friendship was formed between us and many members of the committee. We were surrounded by so many supportive families who understood that we needed to expand our main campus and restore the library in order to meet the growing needs of our community. This recognition of growth was vital to continue the mission of Sister Edna Ann and Sister Shirley and we are forever grateful to those who stepped forward to help make this possible.” Kristina Baizan Devereux and Deborah Gremillion Co-Chairs Capital Campaign Committee

The SCM Fund 2016-2017 During the 50th anniversary year of St. Catherine’s Montessori, the Annual Fund was renamed, “The SCM Fund, Every Family for Every Child”. This shift clearly represents the true meaning of the most important fundraising drive, which generates the second largest source of income for the school in support of its daily operations, and touches every member of our community. St. Catherine’s is an independent, mission driven school which was recognized as one of the top 10 most affordable private schools in Houston by Thesis Magazine, September 6, 2016. Since its inception, the school has worked to keep tuition costs at reasonable levels while sustaining its diverse community. It is for this reason why The SCM Fund is necessary: to bridge the revenue gap between the true costs of operating St. Catherine’s and tuition income. Our community has continued to support the fund and generously contributed $151,487, with 84% family participation and 100% faculty/staff and Board of Directors participation, equating to 4.1% of the total budget. Every dollar raised goes directly to supporting all areas of the school including teacher salaries, professional development, classroom materials and campus maintenance...all vital components for sustaining the best of St. Catherine’s Montessori. We wish to thank the generosity of all of our donors who invested in our children’s educational journey. St. Catherine’s Montessori celebrated its 50th year Golden Gala in grand style at the Hotel ZaZa, February 11, 2017. This milestone gala and auction was a testament to the life’s work of two women who founded St. Catherine’s over 50 years ago, Sister Edna Ann Hebert and Sister Shirley Owens. Over 365 guests were in attendance including current parents, alumni families and current and former faculty and staff. Co-chaired by Cathy and Randy Crath, Alison Jefferies and Lorenzo Cohen and Shannon and Jamie Mann, the evening was filled with many special moments, including the formation of a human chain linking all 365 guests’ hands in prayer, expressing gratitude for all our blessings and asking for God’s guidance on the journey for the next 50 years. The evening’s presentations concluded with a touching film tribute to Sister Edna Ann Hebert, whose work in teaching children with reading challenges inspired other teachers to use her instructional methods to help children in the Greater Houston area and beyond. We will proudly name “The Sister Edna Ann Hebert Library” in her honor when the renovations are completed in summer 2018. We wish to thank all of our guests, sponsors, underwriters and auction donors whose generosity raised over $230,000 that evening in support of the capital campaign, “Building on the Legacy”.

was such an honor to head the celebration of St. Catherine’s Montessori's 50th Anniversary “It Gala...a golden milestone indeed! Our own friendships were formed at this school, our children have been raised here and we are all firm believers in the Montessori method and the foundation it lays for our children’s future. The evening was a beautiful expression of the decades of SCM families coming together in support of what has always been a remarkable school. The future certainly looks bright for the St. Catherine’s Montessori community! ” Cathy Crath, Shannon Mann, Alison Jefferies, Gala Chairs

A DVA N C E M E N T CO M M I T T E E As we celebrated the Golden Anniversary of our unique school and its Dominican roots, it was also a time to plan for St. Catherine’s future. Strong student retention and the continued growth presented new creative opportunities to meet the needs of our students and their families. This 50th year embodies the thousands of St. Catherine’s Montessori families who believed and invested in a school with a mission aimed at guiding children to become caring, intelligent, compassionate individuals who are critical thinkers and seek out solutions to problems, while developing a sense of responsibility to their community and beyond. It is the goal of the Advancement Committee to identify and implement strategies to secure the necessary resources, ensuring the mission carries on. Key accomplishments of the Committee during the 2016-2017 year included: • Integration of Japhet Creek with St. Catherine’s facilities. Japhet Creek provides students the muchneeded space for curricular opportunities and it offers our community a place to gather for meetings or in celebration. • Identification of the fundraising opportunities with the expansion to high school. • Implementation of RenWeb to capture the volunteer hours parents invest in advancing the mission of St. Catherine’s Montessori. • Broadened outreach to our alumni families and former faculty who were instrumental in the school’s evolution over 50 years. We joined together in joyful celebration with our founding Dominican Sister, Edna Ann Hebert, OP

“It is vitally important to the continued growth and success of St. Catherine’s that all parents take responsibility for the financial as well as the spiritual wellbeing of the school. It is our hope that all parents will hear the call and respond to the best of their ability to the financial outreach by the school. The needs of the school will continue to evolve as long as the dream that created this school lives on.”

FINANCE COMMITTEE What a year it has been! It was over a year ago when we announced St. Catherine’s was debt free. This positive financial position allowed us to successfully launch a capital campaign to support campus expansion leading to the groundbreaking for Phase 1 in 2017. This enhancement to the school has over 90% of the cost already pledged. It is amazing how dynamic the community is and this year represents what is possible. As our financial responsibility to the community mandates and our audited financials illustrate year after year, St. Catherine’s Montessori continues to be a lean organization, directing most of our revenue to the classroom, where it impacts our children the most. Our work is not done in supporting our school’s long-term financial and strategic goals. We continue to identify further resources for developing the school holistically, passing on to our children a love to learn and maintaining its socioeconomic diversity. I know what the school asks and continues to ask from each of you is demanding, and I thank you for continuing to respond to the financial stability of our community. I appreciate the opportunity to serve as the Treasurer of the Board of Directors. Pat and I will always be indebted to the community for the foundation my daughters (aged 23 and 25) received here. I wish to thank you, the St. Catherine’s community, for what you do with your time, money and services to enable St. Catherine’s excellent program. Please continue to strengthen that culture built over the last 50 years. Bob Lunn Board Chair, Finance Committee Treasurer, Board of Directors

Preparing the E N V I R O N M E N T THE BUILDING AND GROUNDS COMMITTEE The Building and Grounds Committee exists to support the Board of Directors and the Head of School in the long-term planning and development of the St. Catherine’s facilities, infrastructure, and grounds. Comprised of the Head of School, the Facilities Manager, the Naturalist, a Board member, guides and parent volunteers, the scope of the Committee’s activities includes reviewing, planning, integrating, executing, and maintaining a wide variety of facilities and grounds matters. The Committee’s most recent and ongoing focus has been: (1) ongoing development of a 10-year facilities plan; (2) assessment of our facility as it ages and addressing its current needs; and (3) a continued focus on providing structured support for the establishment of well managed grounds for St. Catherine’s Montessori and the St. Catherine’s Montessori Japhet campus. The Committee meets monthly, although additional meetings occur when necessary.

“Our campus was intentionally developed to offer students an authentic Montessori experience. These varied learning environments allow our students to learn and grow in exciting new ways. A strong and supportive relationship between the facility and its community is the goal of the Buildings and Grounds Committee.” Alison Jefferies Board Chair, Building and Grounds Committee Secretary, Board of Directors

THE BUILDING COMMITTEE

The Building Committee provides leadership and guidance throughout the campus expansion project, beginning from the planning and construction phases, all the way up through project completion. Under the leadership of Jorge Villalobos, parents, faculty, staff, and experts in education, architecture and construction, worked diligently to report on progress and offer recommendations to the Board of Directors regarding all aspects of the campus expansion. During this past year, the committee made great strides by opening up the bidding to 3 general contractors, ultimately recommending Forney Construction to build the project. Construction begins during the summer of 2017 and is estimated to take between 9-10 months to complete two Upper Elementary classrooms and reclaim the school’s original library, currently being used as a Lower Elementary classroom. Going forward, the building committee will begin re-focusing on the short and long term planning for future needs including the Adolescent Community, High School, Music and other programs.

“I would like to thank the members of the Building Committee, Forney Construction and other support staff whose diligence in managing various aspects of the project was extremely valuable to assure its success.” CO M M I T T E E Jorge Villalobos The Building Committee Committee Chair

Our Community

VOLUNTEER FUNDRAISING EFFORTS Fifty years of dedicated service by scores of St. Catherine’s families have set the stage for a rich culture of philanthropy. Beginning in the earliest years, our parents have been the force behind the momentum driving St. Catherine’s growth from a small pre-school in 1966 to the current campus with Montessori programs and facilities specifically designed for Infant Community through Adolescent Community. Our volunteer families’ generosity and service make a difference in our community and we are grateful for all they do each day to address the growing needs of the school. Thank you to all our community volunteers whose work supported the following fundraisers in our 50th year, collectively raising $52,189.23. • Square 1 Art (Faculty Enrichment) • Rebate Programs, Magazine Drive (PSO) • Hoot for Hoops, Concession Sales, Family Dinner Rebates, Mini Directory (Athletic Booster Club) • Book Fair (Library) • Steps for Students (PSO and Athletic Booster Club) • Sociables (General Operating Fund)

“It has been an incredible honor and a joy to serve as PSO President during the 2016-2017 school year. This was a very special year for our school, as it was SCM’s 50th anniversary. The mission of the PSO is to enhance the environment at SCM while building community through family involvement and service. This rings so true this year as many parents volunteered to organize our PSO events, including the PSO Fall Fest and PSO Spring Fling where the community came together to celebrate. We are blessed to have so many parent volunteers that made this year a great success! Thank you for this opportunity to work with so many of you and for the long-lasting friendships.” Mary Tysor President, PSO

“The Booster Club enjoyed another very successful and productive season in 2016-2017. It has been an honor to work alongside other dedicated school parents in the ongoing support and growth of the school’s athletic programs and participation. The success of our student-athletes is in large part due to our dedicated coaches, parents and teachers that constantly support and guide them through the many lessons that are learned through sports. Thank you all for your many hours of volunteering and cheering on our student-athletes.” Jim Meyn President, Athletics Booster Club
