Three Brothers

A Message from William V. Day They were Bill, Ray and Jerry. All brothers and patients at St. Barnabas Nursing Home. About 50 years ago. Probably the only time in the 118-year history of St. Barnabas. All received free care.

from Deer Lakes High School. Wonderful volunteers who cared deeply for the three brothers and for other patients who could use their hands and minds to create paintings of what they saw and felt. Wonderful volunteers.

These gentlemen all suffered from Muscular Dystrophy. They had an older brother and two sisters. And they had loving spirits.

It has always been the goal of our Recreation Departments to encourage patients to utilize their talents to their maximum capacities for as long as possible. Bill, Ray and Jerry did just that. They struggled to put paint brushes in their hands. To find the right shades of oils to produce just the right shadows and highlights. But they painted!

Their story was revived recently when our Communities Admissions Director, Cynthia Boyd, was explaining to a prospective resident the many benefits of living in one of our retirement communities — The Village or The Woodlands. Much to Mrs. Boyd’s surprise, the people produced a painting by Ray. And a story from the News Record published in 1970. In those days, painting classes were held at St. Barnabas Nursing Home by two teachers

The three brothers lived at St. Barnabas for many years. Donations enabled them to live out their days in unique ways. Echoes of their electric wheelchairs resound today in the hallways of St. Barnabas Nursing Home. God bless their souls. God bless, WVD President@StBarnabasHealthSystem.com Muscular Dystrophy is just a challenge to overcome in the eyes of St. Barnabas Recreational Therapy.

ome for the Holidays guides the creation of Beaver Meadows dinner menus. Featured among Chef Jim Eyerman’s nutritious options are favorite dishes once savored by his diners in their own homes. “Residents really enjoy good memories and eating their favorite recipes again; it gives them a sense of pride,” says the culinary artist who is integral to Beaver Meadows patient care team. Bettina’s Creamy Corn Casserole, Margaret’s Cabbage and Corned Beef and Flossie’s Hot Dog and Potato Casserole receive rave reviews. At this time and throughout the year, St. Barnabas’ traditional holiday meals are served to entire families who gather for fellowship and good food. Grandma-inspired cuisine makes it that much closer to home.

Celebrating the Messiah

“God is able” prophesized an Episcopal layman who founded St. Barnabas Free Home in 1900. He believed that faith and work (the title and mission of this magazine) are requisite to humanitarian service. More than a century later, this Christian ethic carries on as goodwill and God’s will are performed at St. Barnabas every day. Ministry at St. Barnabas extends beyond church walls as Christians worship God and celebrate Christmas.

“Welcome all who are lonely and in need.”

Stirring Up Memories T

he smell of sugar cookies. The ho ho ho of Santa Claus. The sounds of jingling bells and Christmas carols. The visuals of the Nativity scene, snowflakes and tinsel. These sensory stimulants are all part of Virtual Reality (VR) at St. Barnabas. Memory Care patients experience the holidays in cinematic 360 degree 3D imagery thanks to technology company MyndVR which supplies the equipment and the videos. Participants literally immerse themselves in an experience that lifts spirits, spurs cognition and can promote fellowship. The St. Barnabas memory care specialists add to the 3D VR experience with holiday extras that appeal to taste, touch and smell — baked gingerbread, essential oils and fleece blankets. Renowned Pittsburgh neurosurgeon Joseph Maroon incorporates VR into the St. Barnabas Cognitive Brain Health Program.

St. Barnabas patients virtually time travel to holidays past through reminiscence therapy’s 3D surround sound headsets and special sensory effects.

Give Until I t…Hearts!

hristmas is the perfect time for your “gift from the heart”— that pay-it-forward goodwill gesture championed by Nancy Santory, a long-time supporter of St. Barnabas Charities and the latest addition to its board of trustees. This year-end opportunity reduces your taxable income and establishes a legacy guaranteeing impoverished patients free recovery, rehabilitation and residency at St. Barnabas. Charity care ranges from short-term rehabilitation to end-of-life hospice and is anonymously provided throughout skilled nursing, living assistance and independent living. Jack Orseno is one of thousands who seek the expertise of clinicians like Nursing Director Maricris Regino and trust their 24-hour medical care, living assistance and residency will be covered by St. Barnabas Free Care Fund should they need it. Support from the Free Care Fund exceeds $7 million each year.

Holiday loneliness and depression give way to joy brought about by the kindness of visiting strangers who become friends throughout the year, celebrating birthdays, holidays and special observances such as Veteran’s Day. They find the experience especially rewarding.

PAWS-itively PURRfect! hen Milo enters the room, faces light up. Smiles grow brighter. Loneliness fades. Agitation is soothed. Spirits are lifted. This four-legged friend and his Therapy Dogs International volunteers animate recreation and rehabilitation at St. Barnabas clinical residences. Pet therapy doubles as a recreational event for most patients, joyfully oblivious that their canine visitors, and cats too, are integral to improving their emotional health and coping skills. Shirley Bochek, 83, of St. Barnabas Nursing

Home relives her past with every hug she gives Milo. The retired forklift operator cherished her West Deer Township home — full and noisy with children, grandchildren and pets, especially during the holidays. “Residents learn, in the company of dogs, to overcome loneliness and fear. They are delightfully entertained by their antics and tricks and are warmed beyond words by their unconditional love and acceptance,” says a volunteer with TDI, whose slogan is “Paws Awhile for Love.”

D edicating your St. Barnabas Donation
