Dear Members of the St. Patrick’s College Community It has been another full and productive week at St. Patrick’s College. My thanks go to the Parents and Friends for their coordination of the Parent Education Evening with Andy Roy. Over 200 people attended the evening and were treated to an informative and entertaining presentation. These nights are arranged to provide parents with information about a range of topics from experts in specific fields. They are another example of the community and partnership that are core elements of St. Patrick’s College.

The sporting season continues to gather momentum with the CIC and AIC swimming carnivals being held next week. At the Spirit Assembly the Swimming and Debating teams were presented. Both groups of young men have been preparing well and the coaches are looking forward to positive results. I have pleasure in announcing the Captains of Swimming and Debating and believe both young men will lead their activities with distinction.

A critical aspect of our College is the generous support given by parents and others to the extensive range of activities held at the College . Parents volunteer at the tuckshop, uniform shop, Paddies Van, sport canteens, orientation nights, Open Day and a host of other activities. Parents also assist by being involved in the various support groups and boards that convene each month at the College.

One group that meets each month is the Curlew Park Association. We are all aware of the outstanding facility that we have at Curlew Park and the excellent work the staff do to ensure that it is available for the students. Curlew Park is a Brisbane City Council facility and the Curlew Park Sporting Association is the lease holder. All developments that occur at Curlew Park are coordinated through this group. Over the years an extraordinary amount of work has been undertaken at Curlew Park and further enhancements are programmed for this year. The Curlew Park Association meets on the first Wednesday of each month and will have its AGM on Wednesday 2 April. If you are interested in being part of this group or wish to find out more about the group please contact me at the College. Involvement in the Curlew Park Association is an outstanding investment in the future of your son’s schooling at St. Patrick’s College.

On Sunday, Monday and Tuesday of next week the Year 12 students will be involved in the Kairos Retreats. There will be four separate retreats occurring simultaneously over these days with over 30 staff involved. The retreat experience is a significant part of the journey for the Year 12 students so I ask you keep them in your thoughts and prayers over this time.

Finally this week, the College Leadership Team will commence enrolment interviews for Years 5 and 7, 2016, next week. A large number of applications have already been received. However, if you have a son you would wish to be included in one of these intakes or have friends looking for places in 2016, please ensure applications are forwarded to the College as soon as possible.

A brief overview of the Family Programs scheduled in 2014 and an opportunity to hear from parents that have attended.

AIC/ CIC SWIMMING CARNIVALS: This is a “Special Event Day” for those students who are required to attend to cheer and support our swimmers . Year 7 students will be attending the CIC Carnival on Monday in full school uniform. The AIC Swimming Carnival on Thursday will be attended by Years 10 and 12. All students are recommended to bring their own lunch and water as the food prices are expensive at the Aquatic Centre.

WEEK 5: “HAIR WEEK” Hair: This week is Hair Week, which is halfway through the Term. I ask that you check your son’s hair and if required, make the necessary arrangements to have their hair cut to meet the College guidelines before the start of next week. I remind all students that extreme hairstyles that are closely shaved with the comb over on top will be challenged and rectified. Hair needs to be appropriate for school. I ask that you check your sons diary pages 27-28 for the full Hair and Grooming Policy.

Mr Frank Torrisi INTER-HOUSE SWIMMING CARNIVALS: Congratulations to Quane House for their overall win. The outstanding swimmers will now represent St. Patrick’s at the upcoming AIC and CIC Carnivals. Particular thanks to the House Deans who worked tirelessly over both days to ensure the Carnival ran smoothly and was full of positive spirit. Overall Results: 1st Quane, 2nd Ryan; 3rd O’Rourke; 4th Kennedy, 5th Rice, 6th Treacy; 7th Coffey; 8th Mooney and 9th Xavier.

Thank You to all the Parents and Staff who were able to assist with the Social last Saturday night. Congratulations to all the boys who attended the social, they were very well behaved and did us proud. It is the expectation that all boys demonstrate positive behavior when in public ,whether at our College Socials or other Colleges.

LEADERS CORNER Five weeks into our final year and one thing is becoming ever more evident. Our time left is running out, and it’s running quickly. This immovable finality pressures our cohort every day to live up to the challenges we have set out for ourselves and fulfil our obligations to the school and the wider community.

Learning from previous years, the seniors of 2014 have engineered a Study Club program whereby every Wednesday afternoon students of all year levels are

welcomed to a friendly learning environment to do schoolwork. Six senior students attend this afternoon as tutors, aiding students with assignments, homework and exam revision.

This peer-tutoring initiative has already created quite a buzz in the student body, with many boys already attending the weekly event. I would encourage all students to make the most of these programs as they are presented to them, for it won’t be long until another five weeks have passed and another bunch of opportunities are overlooked.

AP Curriculum On Friday of last week, Year 12 students were involved in two days of workshops and practice tests for this year’s QCS Test.

Whilst this test does not take place until September, it is important that our preparation commences now. As such Year 12 students will undergo workshops and testing throughout the year.

All Year 12s are to be commended for the way they approached the tasks. At all times the boys were attentive and enthusiastic in their approach. As I indicated at the workshop success in the QCS doesn’t just depend on knowledge. A positive attitude is also necessary. Our focus for this round of workshops was the writing task. In subsequent weeks we will turn our attention to the multiple choice and short response papers.

In recent weeks I have written about the importance of both parents and students reading the College Assignment Policy.

This can be found in the Student Diary. Could I ask all parents and students, if they have not already done so, to take the time to familiarise themselves with the policy.

Whilst the College does have printing facilities, these are more for students to print references relevant to their research as part of a unit of work. The two printers in the library cannot accommodate the huge volume of printing necessary if all students attempted to print assignments on the morning of the due date. Inevitably, some students will not have time because the lines at the printers will be too long.

Hence, it is advisable that all printing of final copies is completed at home.

Unfortunately, if students run short of time attempting to print final copies in the library, we will have no option but to consider the work as late. After the great support shown last Saturday we would like even more students supporting this Saturday. All students attending MUST be dressed in the correct College playing attire and should any student be attending (or staying) as a spectator, it is EXPECTED that they are dressed in their formal College uniform. Any student who is not dressed in the appropriate College attire may well be asked to leave the venue.

It has been a great start to the season for both CIC and AIC Cricket teams. From all reports teams have been competing with great sportsmanship and representing SPC to the best of their ability.

Our last practice meet before Championships this Friday will be a combined CIC/AIC carnival at Padua College, Kedron.

The bus will return at approximately 6.50pm.

CIC (Monday 3th March) and AIC (Thursday 6th March) Swimming Championships are upon us. Students have been informed of swim team positions.
