ZOYSIA ZONE

April 2012

Welcome to summer. I just wanted to be the first to say that as we bypassed spring and headed straight for the warm weather here in Louisville. Record highs and temperatures, some 20 to 25 degrees above the norm, have settled in, and we can only guess what’s next. I estimate that we are 3 to 4 weeks ahead of where we should be and evidence of that can be seen on many fronts. The zoysia tees and fairways are showing a candy apple green, dogwoods are in bloom, and I am quite positive my allergies recognize the change. I’ll bet you have even mowed your lawn more in March than you can recall. Regardless, I take it as a good sign as all the turf wakes up from a short winter nap, and we position ourselves for a solid agronomic season here at Audubon. We have just finished up with aerifying greens and approaches, and the process was smooth. Clear, dry skies and temperatures in the low 70’s made for perfect conditions to create channels for root growth. The dry weather allowed our topdressing sand the opportunity to be worked into the holes, filling them completely. This is a key factor for a speedy recovery. I elected to use more sand this time to help aid in smoothing the surfaces and am happy with where we are at. I remind everyone to be patient during the first week post aerification while the plant heals and recovers. We will be back to full strength within 2 weeks and usually a little less. I recognize this process is inconvenient for golfers, but it is vital to the long term success of any putting green.

Nick aerifying #5 green. Note the sand applied first. We have also been busy around the clubhouse grounds mulching and preparing beds for the season. Rodney continues to highlight the club and course with his landscaping skills. We will use around one tractor trailer load of mulch each spring, and he has his hands on all of it. Think about that the next time you pass a tractor trailer on the interstate, and imagine it full of hardwood mulch. Makes the 20 bags you sling around your house seem kinda small. Bunker work continues, and we are nearing the end of the tunnel on completing our green side hazards. I have heard from many of you how much of a difference this has made, and those comments are huge. There truly is nothing better than taking an area that is an issue and making positive strides that are recognized by the membership. In many ways, it is why we are here. Once we complete the green side bunkers, we will turn our attention to making improvements on the fairways. I am not sure how far we will get as it will be based on time and dollars. I will keep you posted as we move forward. I hope you have had an opportunity to get out and play the course and take advantage of this beautiful March weather. Good days are ahead, and I am excited for it all. Be sure to check out Audubon’s web site for more information. You can also find us online at Facebook (Audubon C.C. Greens and Grounds) and Twitter (@jgballard1). Sincerely,

John G. Ballard John G. Ballard, CGSCS Certified Golf Course Superintendent

It is hard to believe that our season officially started April 1st, considering that our fairways and tees have fully greened, the practice tee is open, and over 2000 rounds of golf have already been played! With all of this “early golf”, everyone should be ready for the tournament schedule to get underway in earnest. Pocket calendars are now available in the golf shop. You will also find the entire calendar, along with 2011 tournament results, at auduboncc.org. Detailed event information is available by clicking on the event name. Event sign up sheets will be posted on the golf shop bulletin board one month prior to the event date. The Trophy Fund Tour and Senior Trophy Fund Tour will get underway on Saturday, April 21st with the Trophy Fund #1 – Individual Gross & Net. Members 55 and above (as of April 21st) have the option of participating in the Senior Tour, Regular Tour, or both. Information on the Senior Tour was mailed to all eligible members and may be found on the website and on all club bulletin boards. Those intending to compete as a senior MUST indicate that intention to a member of the golf shop staff prior to April 21st. Watch for sign up information on the new Senior Match Play Championship and Senior Individual Match Play. All members age 55 & above are eligible for the match plays and do not have to be a member of the Senior TFT to participate. The “in-season” Audubon Golf Rules and Procedures are in effect from April 1st through October 31st. Some items to keep in mind concerning “in-season” rules:

• • • • •

Fivesomes are not permitted. Golf carts must stay out of the rough at all times Request cards for weekend starting times are available in the golf shop All scores must be posted for handicap – late posting box outside golf shop Member-only, Men’s Association, & Ladies’ Association reserved playing times in effect

The Audubon Golf Shop Staff is very excited about the new equipment, shoes, and apparel arriving weekly this spring. TaylorMade Rocketballz is one of the hottest driver/fairway combinations to come through in years. We have a great selection of Rocketballz demos in addition to the best new offerings from Titleist, Callaway, and Ping. Our golf shoe selection has NEVER BEEN BETTER. Back in the shop this year is Nike with the Lunar Control. It may be the lightest golf shoe ever made. We also have deep inventory in the golf/street shoe category made popular by Fred Couples. Adidas and Ashworth have some of the best looks in this category, and we have them all! As always we have a great selection of traditional Foot-Joy styles. Already in stock are men’s apparel from Adidas FP, Monterey Club, and Greg Norman. For the ladies, Tail, EP Pro, and AUR are the first groupings to arrive. If you are a bargain hunter, check the sign on golf shop door with our “Deal of the Week”. So far we have featured headwear, shoes, and golf equipment with great incentives to buy. We will run these specials all season! Sincerely,

Eric C.C. Gilliland Eric C.C. Gilliland PGA Professional
