ATM Safety Tips Automated teller machines (ATMs) provide a fast and convenient way for you to access your credit union savings, checking and line-of-credit any time of the day or night. Here are some common sense safety guidelines and suggestions to keep in mind to help protect you and your accounts when using an ATM.

VISA ATM/Debit Card Security • Treat your card like cash. Always keep your card in a safe place. • Keep your personal identification number (PIN) a secret. Memorize it. • Never write your PIN on your card or store it near your card. • Never tell your PIN to anyone or allow anyone to enter your PIN for you. • Never give out information about your PIN over the telephone. Your credit union will never ask you for your PIN. • If your card is lost or stolen, or you think someone may know your PIN, report it immediately to Silver State Schools Credit Union. • Never leave your receipt or discard it at the ATM. • Check your receipts against your monthly statements to guard against ATM fraud. 175896

Personal Security at ATMs • After dark, only use ATMs that are well-lighted with minimal landscaping. • Always look around before conducting a transaction. If you see anyone or anything suspicious, cancel your transaction and leave the area at once. • Have your card ready before you approach the ATM in order to minimize time. • When using a walk-up ATM, park as close as you can to the machine. If there are other people at the ATM you want to use, remain in your car with the doors locked and windows up until they leave. • Do not leave your car running or the keys in the ignition as you walk up to the ATM. • Use your body to block the view of your transaction, especially as you enter your PIN and take your cash and card. • As you return to your car after the transaction, have your car keys ready and check around and under your vehicle. • When using a drive-up ATM, keep your doors locked and windows up until you are ready to use the machine. • While waiting in line for the ATM, always leave enough room between your vehicle and the one in front of you for a quick exit should it become necessary. • Keep cash, checks or moneybags out of sight until you are ready for your transaction. • If you are followed after using an ATM, seek a place where people, activity and security can be found. If necessary, call 9-1-1.

I’m very pleased to pass along the news that Silver State Schools Credit Union was recently honored with a first-place award in the Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Recognition program. It received this accolade for efforts it has made in instituting Financial Literacy programs for High School Students. The Credit Union’s entry will now go on to compete in the national level recognition program. When Senate Bill 317 — which mandates financial literacy instruction for high school students throughout Nevada — became law July 1, 2009, the Credit Union realized this was the perfect time to offer its services of financial education to the Clark County School District. In the year since, the Credit Union has reached and taught more than 4,100 high school students in the Las Vegas area. Silver State Schools Credit Union’s financial literacy program, developed by its Business Development team, is considered the only one of its type that

satisfies all of the requirements of Senate Bill 317. Teachers can choose to have the Credit Union present the entire program or they can pick and choose only those topics they would like covered. Presentations are given on the teachers’ class schedules, most commonly during Credit Union staff lunch hours. 25974

Silver State Schools Credit Union Donates 12 Laptops to Laptops for Books Project The Laptops for Books project, a collaboration of the Clark County School District Library Services and Silver State Schools Credit Union (SSSCU), is designed to increase the number of books students read independently, as well as expose students to literature they might not otherwise read. Students participate by reading and producing a book report from a list carefully selected by school librarians across the state. Thousands of students, from elementary through high school, participated for the 2009-10 school year. For this, the eighth year of the program, Silver State Schools Credit Union donated 12 laptops, which were awarded by random drawing to the following students:

The awards program is administered at the state level by the California and Nevada Credit Union Leagues, and nationally by the Credit Union National Association. Only first-place winners in each category advance to the national competition, which will take place in November this year. If you are a high school teacher who would like to introduce Silver State Schools Credit Union’s financial literacy program into your classroom, please contact Crystal Lyon, Business Development Manager, at 702.697.8082, or email her at clyon@ silverstatecu.com.
