History of Tallahassee Chapter

The Tallahassee Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc. was formally established, September 15, 1951, by Mrs. Edna Seay of Buffalo, New York, National President. Highlights of the day’s activities included a cowboy party for the thirty six (36) children representing seventeen (17) mothers who later that evening participated in installation ceremonies followed by a banquet for the Chapter members and their guest, Mrs. Seay. On the following day, the fathers, who are an integral part of Jack and Jill, participated with the mothers and the honored guest at a buffet luncheon at the home of Dr. and Mrs. Gilbert L. Porter.

The primary purpose of this organization is to create a medium of contact among mothers and children that provides constructive recreational, social and cultural programs for children through concentrated efforts of organized parents. Since commencement, The Tallahassee Chapter has held true to the organization’s purpose in cultivating and nurturing its programming.

Our chapter embarked its 71st year of service during the 2022 2023 program year.

Since our chartering, September 15, 1951, the focus of our activities has been to work with and include the parents and children of families other than our own and to engage in projects for the betterment of the community. Programming is the Heart of Jack and Jill. The Tallahassee Chapter’s heartbeat is strong. Each year the mothers of the Tallahassee Chapter plan and execute programs that enrich the lives of all children. Jack & Jill programming is built on five (5) thrusts: Cultural, Education, Health, Civic/Legislative, Social/Recreation.

Among the first community outreach projects sponsored by the local Chapter was sending a deserving, underprivileged student to summer camp. The parents and children of the Chapter also adopted as a project, planting roses in the circular flower bed in the area facing the Adams Street entrance at the defunct Florida A&M Hospital which is currently the FAMU Administration Building. We are proud to have been one of the forerunners of the first Mother’s March for Polio in Tallahassee. Before Mental Health received national attention, our Chapter focused on Mental Health for children. Further, we hold life membership in the NAACP, received the first grant from Jack and Jill of America’s Foundation, ‘Project Get Smart’, an ongoing tutorial for talented and gifted children; participated in the Special Olympics for the Handicapped; assisted a young male multiple amputee, who is now a lawyer, with school expenses; participated annually in the American Heart Association Run; adopted a family annually and provided financial, social, and academic assistance to its members.

National & Regional Leadership

We have maintained active participation in promoting the ideals of the National office. We are appreciative of the Leadership Development Jack and Jill has afforded our membership. Mrs. Annette Thorpe served as the 3rd Regional Director for the Southeastern Region and the late Dr. Eva C. Wanton served as the 8th Southeastern Regional Director.

Dr. Wanton was blessed to also serve as the 13th National President and was elected for two terms from 1986 1990. Under Dr. Wanton’s leadership, Jack and Jill extended its service arm to the African continent. Dr. Wanton established National Black Family Day to be celebrated the first Saturday in May. She also commissioned Jack Samuel Brown, III to write the National Hymn which is still being used.

Chapter Accolades

Programming is the Heart of Jack and Jill. The Tallahassee Chapter’s heartbeat is strong. Each year the mothers of the Tallahassee Chapter plan and execute programs that enrich the lives of all children.

The Tallahassee Chapter moms, teens, children, dads, & associates provide community service within Leon County and the Southeastern Region. Signature Tallahassee Chapter service projects include annual school supplies drive for Title I schools in the Leon County School District; annual toy and book drives for local pre schools and children in underserved communities; and the Experience of a Lifetime Foundation Events (i.e. Carnival at the Moon, Cupcakes & Cocktails and Black Panther Pink & Blue Private Screening) proceeds have benefited Title I schools for educational enrichment opportunities.

The Tallahassee Chapter of Jack & Jill has been a longstanding supporter of local health awareness and cultural campaigns such as the Leon County Sickle Cell Anemia Foundation, Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, March of Dimes Walk for Babies, Meek Eaton Black Archive Museum, John G. Riley House Museum, and Martin Luther King, Jr. Dare to Dream Festival a National Day of Service for Jack & Jill of America, Inc.

During Dr. Kelley Bailey’s tenure as president, 2014 2017, Florida’s First Chapter experienced greater heights. Past Program Directors Tammy Hamlet (2015) and Selika Sampson (2016) received Superior ratings in the program handbook. In addition to executing the programmatic thrusts, mothers of Jack and Jill also enhance their community service for all children. The Tallahassee Chapter of Jack and Jill of America participated in its first Bone Marrow Registry Drive. During Selika Sampson’s tenure as Program Director in the 2015 2016 program year, the Jack and Jill Foundation awarded the Tallahassee Chapter $2800 in grant funding for our Reading Corner initiative. The Reading Corner grant enhanced a Reading Room located within an underserved population in Tallahassee, FL known as the Promise Zone. It is located at the Delta Kappa Omega Providence Community Service Center.

Immediate Past Chapter President Tammy Hamlet successfully led our chapter for two twoyear terms from 2017 2021. During this time, the chapter strengthened its Community Partnerships with Brehon Family Services, Tallahassee Chapter of The Links, Incorporated, Hope Harvest Food Pantry, Delta Kappa Omega Foundation, Inc., the Challenger Learning Center, and Tallahassee Housing Authority. During Lametra Smallwood’s tenure as Program Director (2018 2019), our Chapter was recognized with outstanding community service by the Southeastern Region with the highest number of community service hours in the Region through the United States of America Youth Leadership Service Recognition program. private screening for Marvel’s Black Panther at the Challenger Learning Center which propelled our local giving. The Chapter hosted two STEM summer camps, in 2018 Oak Ridge Elementary students attending a camp at the Challenger Learning Center and in 2019 we hosted a weeklong summer camp at the Delta Kappa Omega Providence Community Service Center. It was a significant event that brought 100 mothers and 200 children and teens together.

The 2019 2020 Program Year started and ended with great enthusiasm, despite the life altering pandemic which would change everything. The regional theme for the administration of RD Latrecia Jordan was Empowering All Children with Passion, Purpose, and Pride. Chapter President Tammy Hamlet encouraged moms to continue to put service first. During the 2019 holiday season, moms and associates provided “Christmas Cheer” to families of the Tallahassee Housing Authority. Program Director Kimberly Hankerson challenged all moms to Level Up! The grade group leaders, sponsors, and chapter moms accepted the challenge and delivered. The 2019 Program Handbook received a Superior rating (104.75). Immediately following our annual oratorical competition March 1, 2020, the novel coronavirus (COVID 19) abruptly ended our in person programming in March 2020. Florida’s First Chapter rose to the occasion again and completed the program year virtually. Our mothers and teens held virtual check ins, business meetings, and elections. Under the servant leadership of Mother Darice E. Richard and the Black Family Day Committee, the chapter showered our seven (7) 2020 graduates with a Jack & Jill Hope Chest, door banner, and monetary gifts. Lead Teen Sponsors Deana McAllister & Opal McKinney Williams provided extra love to all teens during an unprecedented year. In the midst of it all, the mothers of the Tallahassee Chapter were determined to exemplify the new national theme (2020 2022) The Power to Make a Difference: On Mission, On Purpose.

During the 2020 2021 program year, Florida’s First Chapter was dedicated to having a S.T.E.L.L.A.R. chapter. Each mother was committed to assisting with Star studded programming, Timely Reporting, Excellent engagement, Limitless creativity, Lofty ideas, Amazing planning, and Reliable resources. Immediate Past CVP Selika Sampson, Membership Co-Chair Angela Suggs and the membership committee guided 11 new mothers through another virtual membership experience prior to the close of the 2020 2021 program year.

The Chapter is now under the leadership of Chapter President (CP) Selika Stackhouse Sampson. The theme for the 2021 2022 program year is Let’s E.L.E.V.A.T.E.! During the virtual summer Leadership Retreat, she charged all to become Engaged Mothers, Leading and, Enhancing Jack and Jill of America’s Value by Aligning to Our Guiding Principles while Training and Empowering ALL Children, On Mission on Purpose. Throughout the program year, the chapter supported several community service efforts of the Southeastern Region. Upon the close of the 2021-22 Program Year, the Chapter was awarded the

The theme for the 2022 2023 program year continues to be Let’s E.L.E.V.A.T.E. 2.2! During the summer Leadership Retreat, since Mothers are feeling more comfortable with coming together again, CP Selika hosted Mothers at her beach home at Summer Camp Beach in St. Teresa, FL. CP encouraged all moms to Relax. Relate. Release. She simply reminded all present to remain Engaged while Leading and, Enhancing Jack and Jill of America’s Value by Aligning to Our Guiding Principles while Training and Empowering ALL Children, On Mission on Purpose, and asking ourselves, "If every member were just like me, what type of member would that member be?" During the Retreat, Moms also celebrated becoming a FIVE STAR Chapter under Program Director Kim Hankerson!

In addition to servicing the community through partnership, the Tallahassee Chapter is committed to assisting Valdosta Moms On a Mission (VMOMS) in becoming a fully vested chapter just before the end of the year. The Chapter has served as the sponsoring chapter for the VMOMS over the past year and a half, and they will culminate their efforts on Sunday, October 30, 2022, as they become a fully chartered chapter after much leadership, guidance, and support from the Tallahassee Chapter. Long Live Jack and Jill!

Carole Robertson Day Observance

The Sept. 15, 1963, bombing at the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama, was one of the most abhorrent crimes of the civil rights movement. Four young girls attending Sunday school Denise McNair, Cynthia Wesley, Carole Robertson, and Addie Mae Collins, aged 11 to 14 were killed when a bomb exploded at the church. Twenty others were injured. The church was a center for civil rights meetings, and just a few days earlier, courts had ordered the desegregation of Birmingham's schools.

Carole Robertson was born April 24, 1949. She was the third child of Alpha and Alvin Robertson. Her sister was Dianne, and her brother was Alvin. Her father was a band master at the local elementary school. Her mother was a librarian, avid reader, dancer and clarinet player. Carole like her mother, enjoyed reading. She excelled at school and was a straight A student, a member of Parker High School marching band and science club. She was also a Girl Scout and belonged to Jack and Jill of America. When she was at Wilkerson Elementary School she sang in the choir. Her legacy helped create the Carole Robertson Center for Learning in Chicago, a social service agency that serves children and their families.

Jack and

Jill Day

Jack and Jill Day began in 1948 under the direction of Dorothy Wright, our first National President. The concept was that this day would be our family round up time. Chapters are required to have a family activity in September that brings all the membership together after the summer break. It is a time to also invite families that are interested in joining the organization. It focuses on the programmatic thrusts of social and recreational. However, many chapters have incorporated cultural/heritage as part of the day. The focus is to promote the membership growth of the organization at an event that promotes what the organization is all about.

With an exceptional turnout, the families mingled throughout the afternoon, while feasting on good southern cuisine that included many down home favorites including, chicken, baked beans, collard greens, and peach cobbler. Our Jacks and Jills connected and played games all afternoon. We were also able to capture a new “Family Photo” that captures what a great time we had.

Founders’ Day Celebration

In 1928, when Marion Stubbs Thomas invited 20 women friends to a meeting in her Philadelphia home, she did not realize the potential impact of her action. Thomas, a concert pianist, and mother envisioned a social club that would connect her children with others from local Black families. She hoped to rally the visiting mothers to help provide cultural opportunities that the Great Depression and Jim Crow laws denied most young African Americans.

National Black Family Day was established by the 13th National President of Jack and Jill of America, Incorporated, Dr. Eva C. Wanton (1986 1990). It is celebrated annually during the month of May. National Black Family Day came about in May of 1987 when The Honorable William Gray III, Congressman from Pennsylvania, spoke with conviction when he entered a tribute to Jack and Jill of America into the Congressional Record on May 5, 1987, as the organization embarked upon a Black Family Day of Celebration.

This is a chapter wide activity designed to promote the solidarity of the family, reach out to the community at large, to support and strengthen black families.
