get it registered and licensed. Every inch of it was painted battleship gray, right down to the plywood flooring. It was heavy duty. Carried a lot of bikes and firewood. Made a lot of trips to the desert. He kept it parked to the side of the driveway. One Christmas Eve I came home from shopping and parked our ‘62 Chevy pickup in the driveway next to the trailer. Okay, maybe I was a tad too close to it. A little history on the ‘62 pickup. It was another project. You know how these guy-in-the-garages are. Everything is a project. We had picked up the Chevy for about a thousand bucks a few years back and he was slowly restoring it, while I drove it as my daily transportation. It had been carpeted and upholstered. Dents had been removed. And it had recently been painted. Battleship gray or maybe a hair darker. Some might even have called it black. Early that evening we loaded Christmas gifts into the truck and were planning on spending a funfilled Christmas Eve eating dinner and opening presents at his parents’ home. But that was before he tried to back the Chevy out of the driveway. As we were backing out, he was saying something about how I was a little close to the trailer. That’s when it happened. The fender of the newly painted ‘62 Chevy project caught on the bumper of the newly painted trailer project and the sound it made just wasn’t a good sound to hear on Christmas Eve. Sort of a screeching, scraping noise that might lead you to believe metal was being twisted into grotesque shapes. He took the truck out of reverse and eased it forward slightly. I imagined that would work kind of like putting the whole bad scene on rewind, so that presto, it would all be fixed. Not. In fact we heard the same horrid screeching noises just in a slightly different pitch. I wasn’t about to look at the guyin-the-garage. But even without seeing the look on his face I could tell by the eloquent words leaving his mouth that he really wasn’t all that happy with me or this situation that my parking job had gotten us into. He got out of the truck to look things over and found that the truck and trailer were now stuck together as if

Sherri’s

Turn This particular column first appeared in our pages about 25 years ago and has been reprinted in several Christmas issues since. It’s my personal favorite and we share it again this year for your holiday enjoyment.

I

t was about this time of year Precious got it’s name. It was a few years back. Before kids. Before there was never enough time. Before the guy-in-the-garage spent more time working on bikes for kids and neighbors than on his own stuff. He loved working in the garage. Building things. Fabricating they call it. Working with metal. He used to have me help him. I learned a new word even. Template. I’d never heard of the word until I made one. It was for a grill guard on an old GMC 4x4 he had. It was a huge grill guard. That’s the first thing I remember watching him make. Other things came along. Roll cages for Baja Bugs, massive pipe bumpers for trucks, motorcycle stops for the inside of vans, front beams, piggy banks, exhaust pipes, dune buggy bumpers, a chassis or two. The guy-in-the-garage loved welding metal together. And he created some pretty useful stuff too. But the thing that stands out most in my mind is Precious. A flatbed trailer it was. So impressively done that even the folks at DMV commented on the clean welds and master workmanship that had gone into the project, when he went down to

6

they were one big happy project. It took some pulling and pushing, kicking and grunting, bending and yelling and finally the two vehicles were detached from each other. But equally detached, at least from an emotional standpoint, were the two occupants of the truck, namely myself and the guy-inthe-garage. He went ahead and backed the truck out and headed to his mother’s house for our jolly Christmas celebration but when we arrived, I refused to go in. In fact, I got out of the truck, walked to the back, climbed into the camper and there I sat. “I’m not going in,” I said. “Your trailer is more important to you than I am.” He thought about that for a while, probably longer than was necessary and finally assured me that wasn’t true. He really was between a rock and a hard spot at that moment because there was no way he could go face his mom with me pouting in the truck. She'd know in a heartbeat it was all his fault and she'd tell him so. Finally he apologized enough to get me out of the truck and sort of in a mood to celebrate Christmas, but soon after that the trailer was dubbed Precious and after a decade or so the name is still around. Since then, Precious has been replaced by Precious II, a fully-enclosed 20-footer that makes life easier when it comes to hauling seven kids, six bikes, 60 gallons of gas and a ton of firewood. But the fun only just begins when we get home and it’s time to park Precious. I’m happy to say I’ve never parked a vehicle so close to Precious II that it’s gotten hit. But there was that one time when I was giving hand signals to guide the guy-in-the-garage as he was parking and the house just jumped out and hit the trailer. Oops. There comes a time in a man’s life when he’s just got to decide what’s more important: the wife or the trailer? And having made the decision, he probably better keep the answer a secret. E

Breaking News from San Diego Off Road Coalition The Ocotillo Wells lawsuit was

heard in court November 17th and the judge made a tentative ruling in favor of the defendants (The State and Ocotillo Wells). This means the lawsuit is over and very likely in our favor, that open riding will remain at Ocotillo Wells. The judge has not yet made his final ruling as of press time, which will likely happen in the coming weeks. The court issued a tentative ruling stating:

12

"Disposition The Department’s management of the Ocotillo Wells SVRA involves highly discretionary decisions wherein the Department must apply competing statutory directives to specific factual conditions at the park. Petitioner has attempted to show that the Department’s management decisions have been so palpably unreasonable and arbitrary as to show an abuse of discretion as a matter of law. However, the Petitioner has succeeded only in showing that the Department is not managing the park in the manner that Petitioner would prefer. Such differences of opinion are not sufficient to support issuance of a writ. (See Unruh v. Piedmont High School Dist. (1935) 4 Cal.App.2d 390, 393.) Accordingly, the petition is DENIED."

Lopez son/father duo capture golden overall, SCORE Trophy Truck victory at epic 50th Baja 1000 desert race LA PAZ, Mexico—As the final

checkered flag drew a nostalgic end to a golden historic race on Saturday afternoon, Mexico’s youthful superstar Carlos ‘Apdaly’ Lopez teamed with his veteran father Juan C. Lopez to etch their name indelibly as the overall and SCORE Trophy Truck winners at the 50th annual BFGoodrich Tires SCORE Baja 1000 on Mexico’s magnificent Baja California peninsula. Final official results were released by SCORE race officials after the course closed, all data-tracking devices had been read and penalties

GOLDEN BAJA MIL

The world’s most iconic, oldest, prestigious and longest continuously held desert race, this year’s 50th BFGoodrich Tires SCORE Baja 1000 was held over a 1,134.40-mile rugged race course down Mexico’s majestic Baja California peninsula, starting in Ensenada, Baja California Norte and finishing in La Paz, Baja California Sur.

THIRD TIME CHARM

The Lopez tandem became the second Mexican Nationals’ son/father team to win this legendary race overall. They join Gustavo ‘Tavo’ Vildosola Jr and his father Gustavo Vildosola who were the first to accomplish this feat when they won the point-to-point Ensenada to La Paz race in 2008. As Baja itself claimed many of the frontrunners, turning great races into survival-mode finishes with several did not finishes, Apdaly, 22 and his father Juan C., 43 of Tecate, blasted through the terrain and the competition to earn a hard-fought struggle to capture the Golden checkered flag. Complete coverage will be in the January issue of S&S Off Road Magazine. Visit www. scoreinternational.com for results and information.

California Off-Road Vehicle Association Receives Donation from Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Fame Sacramento, Calif. – The 2017

Induction and Awards Ceremony hosted by the Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Fame took place Oct. 30 in Las Vegas. Four individuals, who each have at least 15 years involvement in off-road

motorsports, were inducted into the Hall of Fame. This year’s inductees included Dave Ekins, Cliff Flannery, Bob Gordon and Bill Savage. In addition to the yearly induction ceremony, the Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Fame contributes to an activist organization to maintain continued protection of off-road access on public lands. This year, the Hall of Fame made a $2,500 donation to the California OffRoad Vehicle Association and a $2,500 donation to the San Diego Off-Road Coalition. “CORVA appreciates this generous donation that will support efforts to preserve the future of off-roading on our public lands,” said CORVA Managing Director Amy Granat. “We will continue to advocate for off-road interests at all levels of government, as we have since 1970.” Granat said the Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Fame’s main role is to honor the icons and organizations who have paved the way for the off-road industry, but they are also dedicated to preserving the sport's future. “That’s something to be admired,” Granat said. “Not only is the Hall of Fame recognizing significant achievements made by individuals in the industry, the organization is passionate about ensuring that off-roading can be enjoyed for generations to come.” About CORVA Working for off-road interests at all levels of government since 1970, the California Off-Road Vehicle Association is based in Sacramento, Calif. CORVA is solely supported by members, donations and sponsors. The organization’s primary focus includes working with federal and state agencies to promote off-road recreation and prevent trail closures, while protecting motorized access in California for the people, not from the people. CORVA ensures that the voices of off-road recreationaists are heard and that off-road trail users retain the right to enjoy public land. For more information, visit CORVA.org.

round of the KENDA AMA National Enduro Championship Series, Presented by Moose Racing, on Nov. 5 in Stanton, Ala., 28 AMA National No. 1 plates were awarded, with the top finisher in each class being recognized as an AMA National Champion for accumulating the most points throughout the nine-round series. "The AMA National Enduro Championship Series was exciting all year long with emerging, new talent and breakout performances in almost every class," AMA OffRoad Racing Manager Erek Kudla said. "Each AMA National No. 1 plate awarded was well deserved and required months of hard

work and dedication. Congratulations to the 28 newly crowned AMA National Champions and the many competitors who participated in the series during 2017." For the second time in his racing career, Steward Baylor of Hodges, S.C., was the overall winner of the AMA National Enduro Championship Series. He secured the win after the championship came down to the last test at the final round of racing and he was rewarded with an AMA National

Championship for the victory. Baylor also won the overall championship in 2011. "Coming into the last round with just two points separating me and Thad [Duvall], I knew I had my work cut out for me," Baylor said. "The first thing I did when I won though, was go straight to Thad and congratulate him. The National Enduro series is a hard one to figure out, so winning this championship means a lot to me, because of the injuries I've faced. It's made me have a different respect for the championship than I did when I was 17." For more information on the AMA National Enduro Championship series, visit www. nationalenduro.com. E

packing gear and retrieving supplies can be a challenge. It’s really tough to find all those small spaces in the back. I’d have to reach over the back seat or climb in through the tailgate while packing and retrieving.

Pop-up side windows

These side windows are just what I needed. Each swings up like a tailgate window. Two small struts hold the windows up and out of the way; the keyed handles keep your gear secure. Those handles recess when in closed position so they don’t get caught on brush or other material. The hardtop is made of fiberglass and inlaid with mildew-resistant carpet.

In the past I had to unload most of the vehicle to reach certain gear. Again, no more. Everything in the back of the Jeep is within arm’s reach. And I can reach it from the outside of the vehicle.

New windows pass an important test

Hinged windows may seem great on paper, but they must stand up to the rigors of four wheeling. If not, they’re of little value.

Soon after installing my new topper, I headed out on my annual Rubicon expedition. If you’ve done the Rubicon, you know how demanding it is – on humans and machines. The route is dusty. It can – and did – rain, and rain heavily. And, of course, I got jostled about as only the Rubicon can do to you.

Window size comparison of a Rally Top on the left LJ to a stock Jeep LJ window on the right The new windows passed with flying colors. The locks never let go. The windows never popped open. There wasn’t a smidgen of dust or water in the cab. To say I was amazed is an understatement. In fact, I was flat out impressed. Even though this was a one-off production, Jerry and his crew put their almost 3 decades of experience into it. The top fits like a glove, and the windows and window frames are of high quality. Jerry tells me that the top is a bit lighter than a stock hardtop, but it’s just as sturdy. I know I can count on years of worry-free use.

A couple quibbles with the new hardtop

Only two issues have come to light so far. For some reason, the locks on the driver side are keyed separately from the passenger side. My guess is that it’s a simple oversight. This was, after all, essentially a prototype. I’d also like to see thicker bolt protectors on the undersides of the locks. Those bolt ends protrude quite a bit.

If your vehicle is leaning toward you (causing the window edge to drop), you can bang your forehead on a bolt end. The bolt ends come covered with a small covering; a thicker and softer piece would be nice. I like the orange color. It’s easier to see them from a distance. Considering what a difference these windows make, I’m really surprised that more hardtops aren’t made this way. Whether Rally Tops will introduce the product I don’t know. I sense that if he were to begin production, Jerry would limit his hardtop Jeep models. I’m sure he’s open to hearing from other 4WD enthusiasts. If you own a Jeep and are interested in learning more about the hardtop with the hinged windows, contact Jerry Mancini. He can be reached at 800-664-8677, or by email to sales@ rallytops.com . If Jerry realizes there is sufficient demand in the 4WD community for this type of hardtop, he might begin producing some models. This new window configuration is the perfect solution for a two-door Jeep Wrangler. The side windows make such

a difference in being able to pack and retrieve your gear. I’m even more excited now to go four-wheeling. This new hard top has added a whole new dimension to my adventures. Perhaps one day you, too, will be able to enjoy the added benefits of this type of hardtop. Obama’s EPA Spent $1.5 Million So Employees Could Hurt Air Quality Driving To Work By Ethan Barton, Investigative Reporter Posted November 8, 2017

F

ormer President Barack Obama’s Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) paid $1.5 million for employee parking spaces, many of which went to the highly-paid upper management or were unused, a government watchdog reported Wednesday. The EPA spent $840,000 subsidizing parking spaces and another $690,000 on empty spaces, the agency’s inspector general (IG) found. Meanwhile, federal law has sought to discourage employees from driving to work without carpooling over the past 30 years and agencies have promoted using public transportation and telework, which improves air quality. One executive order “touts federal air quality

goals” and “the EPA was using valuable resources to subsidize employee parking when the funds could be put to better use in mission-critical programs,” the report said. IG spokeswoman Tia Elbaum added in a podcast: “Obviously the EPA has an expert interest in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. That comes into play here.” The General Services Administration “cited greenhouse gas emissions as a justification for eliminating its own free parking program for employees back in 2013,” Cathy Allen, an auditor with the IG, said in the podcast. “GSA wanted to encourage the use of public transportation and mobile work arrangements in order to reduce traffic congestion and its own carbon footprint.” Only the Washington, D.C., and Atlanta, Ga., EPA offices subsidize parking and only for some employees, according to Allen. Washington employees were given $129.55 monthly subsidies if they had a disability, if they worked unusual hours or if they carpooled with at least three people. More than half of the subsidized parking spaces were given to upper managers, “who are already among the EPA’s highest paid employees,” Allen said. Additionally, one-fifth of the carpools counted children to meet the three-person requirement, according to the IG. In some cases, an EPA employee may have driven his two children to receive the subsidy. The EPA, under current Administrator Scott Pruitt, agreed to stop subsidizing parking for headquarters employees and instead offered parking spaces for the full $293.45 monthly price. Atlanta already discontinued providing parking subsidies for carpools, but kept one space for a disabled employee.

Jerry Brown On Global Warming: ‘Human Civilization Is On The Chopping Block’ By Michael Bastasch

D

Posted November 8, 2017 emocratic California Gov. Jerry Brown is sounding the alarm on man-made global warming while traveling across Europe.

S&S OFF ROAD MAGAZINE - DECEMBER 2017 - www.ssorm.com

“Human civilization is on the chopping block — that’s a big thought,” Brown told German lawmakers in the Baden-Wuertemberg state assembly on Wednesday as part of a 10-day visit to Europe. Brown traveled to Germany for the United Nations climate talks in Bonn where delegates are hashing out ways to further the Paris climate accord. Brown is an ardent critic of the Trump administration and part of a coalition of governors pledging to meet the goals of the Paris accord. President Donald Trump announced in June the U.S. would withdraw from the Paris accord on the grounds it would hurt the economy. However, the U.S. can’t officially exit the agreement until 2020.

California has some of the most aggressive climate policies on the books, including a cap-and-trade program, low-carbon fuel standard and green energy mandate. Those policies, however, have taken a toll. Electricity and gas prices are much higher than the national average, and utility customers who

don’t own solar panels are forced to subsidize those that do. Brown, however, has been undeterred in his crusade against global warming, which he believes is the greatest existential threat to mankind. “We don’t know the exact timing or the magnitude of the global warming threat,” Brown told German lawmakers. “We know it’s a problem. We know it’s huge. We know we can’t stop it. We have to wake up Europe, and wake up America, and wake up the whole world to realize that we have a common destiny and what’s at stake.” “Let’s lead the whole world to realize this is not your normal political challenge,” Brown said. “This is much bigger. This is life itself. It requires courage and imagination.” Editor's Note: We couldn't reprint the above without including this awesome comment found at the end of the story. There are thousands upon thousands of Homeless people living and sleeping on the sidewalks of SF, LA, SD....... There is an outbreak of hepatitis, in San Diego.....a border city......... Jaw Pain?

I

've seen a lot of folks over the years with jaw pain. First, it's good to make sure it is not a pure dental problem. If your teeth are all good and you still have jaw pain, you may have a Temporal Mandibular Joint ( TMJ) issue. The very same muscles that allow us to chew, bite down, the Masseter and Temporalis Muscles are usually sore with this condition. Take your fingers and see if the muscles just in front of your ears and jaw line are tender or have a dentist or other doctor check for you. The TMJ joint, see picture, is located just in front of your ear lobe. You can open and close your mouth and feel the joint there. It can be painful as well with TMJ and in fact, usually is very sore indeed.

26

You may also have popping or cracking sounds as you open and close your jaw. The range of motion from full wide open to closed mouth may be limited and painful. Headaches and head soreness can be associated with this issue of TMJ as well. Pain usually runs from the TMJ area up the side of the head in front of the ear to the crown of the head. The TMJ is lined with cartilage and has a pad called a meniscus for the joint to pivot on, just like the knees do. It can be damaged by blunt force like a direct blow or car accident or over time

with repetitive motion/stress like always chewing gum or tobacco, hard candy, nuts, etc. Injuries to the neck, such as whiplash can cause TMJ problems as well and it need not be from a common car accident. Near crashes, hard landings, a wicked bounce in your buggy, truck, ATV, quad or bike can all cause this problem. Simple and plain stress can be and is a common cause of TMJ seen at my clinic. Hours at the desk, money and or relationship issues, job worries, stress of all types can cause folks to clinch and or grind their teeth. This is called Bruxism and is often seen by dentists and TMJ specialists and can also affect a person's sleep. It can be extremely painful and affect a person's ability to eat and chew their food properly. Dentists will often take x-rays of the TMJ and then take a mold of your mouth and teeth. They will then send the molds out to a lab that will make an appliance you are supposed to wear like a sports mouth/teeth guard to keep the person from grinding their own teeth at night while sleeping and even in the daytime. I've personally seen prices for these sort of treatments go from about $500 for the appliances to quotes of $6,000 for all treatments and x-rays. Here is my beef with these bite/ night guards. They still allow the person to clinch down. This clenching in turn causes the jaw muscles to engage, flex and work. They get very sore and fatigued with no rest. That causes the pain of TMJ most of the time unless an MRI of the TMJ joint and meniscus reveals a tear or degeneration in the joint itself. A plain X-Ray will generally not reveal the cartilage and/or meniscus of the TMJ. Only the MR ( Magnetic Resonance) image will show those structures unless they are calcified and then they may indeed show up on a plain film X-Ray. As I related, these night guards can be expensive and still do not prevent a person with TMJ from clenching and grinding but they do protect the teeth from the pressure of the other teeth. There is a device called a "Discluder" and only some dentists are aware of it. It is more like a retainer you wear in either the upper or lower mouth. It snaps into place like a retainer you would get from an Orthodontist. You generally cannot see it when you are wearing it. It prevents occlusion. That is it prevents the teeth, mainly the molars, from being able to come together. This in turn prevents the clenching muscles of the jaw that allow us to bite down and chew our food, from engaging. This and ONLY this, can really prevent Bruxism, grinding of teeth, day and night for the folks that are chronic clinchers. In my opinion, a dentist that can make you a Discluder is your best bet if you grind your teeth and that is the cause of your TMJ problem. The Discluder device is a small plastic/acrylic piece that prevents your front and or back teeth from coming together completely and this

S&S OFF ROAD MAGAZINE - DECEMBER 2017 - www.ssorm.com

prevents occlusion/clenching and lets the jaw muscles relax! At my clinic I also use a combination of therapies to help out. They include therapeutic ultrasound, electrical muscle stimulation, stretching and often a referral to a DDS that can make you a proper Discluder. I had to go through this myself with all this TMJ pain. I had it on one side and was grinding my teeth at night during my sleep and even in the daytime. It was just before I got married back in the mid 1990's and I guess I was nervous, for darn good reason! Ha! But, we are better now! If the TMJ issue came on after an accident, the bones of the upper neck can also be slightly misaligned, not moving properly and putting slight pressure on the nerves, called a subluxation, to the TMJ area and associated muscles as indicated previously. Sometimes it's the TMJ itself that is misaligned as well as the other factors I've already mentioned. That can be adjusted as well by a good chiropractor. Severe injury to the TMJ and or jaw may require surgery in rare, extreme trauma cases. I always take and recommend the conservative road of treatment in any case that is not an immediate medical emergency. I hope you all found this article and information informative and useful. I'm seeing many folks paying big bucks to cure this issue. Yes, pain pills will kill the pain and noninflammatory medications will take down the inflammation and muscle relaxer medications will relax the muscles, sure will! But, has anyone addressed the CAUSE of the issue? Or, are they trying to cover it up?

Eddie Mulder’s West Coast Dirt Track Series Willow Springs Walt James Stadium

Rosamond, CA, September 30 - October 1, 2017

F

ARTICLE & PHOTOS BY KAREN GOULD, CHECKERED FLAG PHOTOGRAPHY

or over 20 years Eddie and Jodi Mulder have put their hearts and souls into bringing spectacular racing to venues throughout California. This year all of their attention was focused on the Cachuma Lake Vintage Motorcycle Rally in the spring and the Willow Springs weekend in the fall. Willow Springs is a favorite event for riders who come from all over the United States and Canada to ride it. A well groomed, 3/8 mile decomposed granite, banked smooth track. Big, fast, fun and lot of money up for grabs in the pro class!

respectably in everything he contested. From his first lap on the dirt Saturday to his last on Sunday, he progressed like he’d been riding dirt all his life. Some of California’s fastest kids were also in attendance. Both Travis Petton IV and Grant Holmes earned victories at the 2017 AMA Amateur Nationals. In the 250 Open class they were competing with each other and put on a show that included competition with Tucker Mount. Holmes got the hole shot with Petton close enough to keep him honest. They finished Holmes, Petton and Mount. Dominic De Mario led the 80 class to an easy victory with Travis Petton’s younger brother, Colin Petton and Blake Ash following to the checkers. Kage Tadman, on a 65cc was a favorite in this race showing the fans his exceptional talent and skill. Jeff Lessley gave Tom Horton a run for his money leading the the Sr. Vintage through the fouth lap. Horton took the win followed by James Otelle and Jay Gardner. Lessley left the race with a mechanical issue. However, Lessley won the Vet A event followed by Jeff Johnson who took the second spot from Jim Rosa in lap 4. Rosa finished third. Johnson took the 500 Support class home. Racing progressed through the day like clockwork. The fastest rider on the track was AFT Pro rider #23 “The Wizard” Jeffrey Carver riding the Ron Wood prepared Rotax. Carver won his heat race earning a place in the Terry Otton and Rod Lake Racing dash for cash. When the green flag flew in the dash Carver took a commanding lead. He easily won followed by Sammy Halbert, Mees and Bronson Bauman. The Willow Springs Dash for Cash is always extremely competitive with a big money purse thanks to Rod Lake and Terry Otton

Saturday morning the crew wound their way through the long line of motorhomes, vans, trucks and cars to get through the gate and set up for what was to be another exciting and fun filled weekend of racing. Racer and blade operator Gary Ritchie and Eddie began preparing the track and grounds early in the week, cleaning up the pits, pulling weeds and putting things in good order. Jodi starts the registration process a month before the race. Saturday morning registration at the track opens at 8:00 a.m. sharp, the pits come alive, folks meet and greet each other, many whom have not seen one another since the Willow weekend of 2016, and the feeling and passion of racing comes alive. Practice gets under way, riders and mechanics make adjustments to their tire pressure, suspension, motors and carburetors in the hope of being a winner on the track. This weekend, like many others, riders show up from other areas and arenas of motorcycle racing. Registered to race was the MotoAmerica champion Tony Elias, who made his debut on the dirt at Willow Springs riding both Saturday and Sunday and finishing Maikel Dijska

Carver’s misfortune gave Mees the opportunity to win the main followed by Sammy Halbert and roadracer JD Beach. Mees took Eddie’s son, Rick, for a victory lap. Day two at Willow Springs. Sunday was the official Joey Brown Memorial. Joey Brown 19z has been an icon in California motorcycle racing for years. Joey hailed from Paso Robles, California where he owned and operated Brown’s Cycles, catering to the needs of racers for many years and was a pretty successful racer himself. He raised four boys, Ronnie, David, Daniel and Little Ron. Joe and his sons have all thrown their legs over iron horses since they were youngsters and have won many championships and awards through #23 Jeffrey Carver fastest on the track the years so it was an honor to pay difficulties Saturday. Racing also included a memorial race for the Brown boys to race against each other in honor of their dad. Gathered on the infield were the families, fans and other riders to offer a salute at the finish line to the winner and at the same time to show their respect for Joey. Being the close family they are, the brothers gathered coming out of turn 4 and crossed the finish line together. Not a dry eye in the house. third row. Reeling in riders every lap, Carver raced his way all the way up to a second place finish! At the checkers it was Mees, Carver and Halbert in that order. Of the 28 registered entries in Sunday’s Pro Class, were noteable riders from England, Oliver Brindley who has ridden the last half of the AFT Series, Maikel Dijkstra from the Netherlands and Suzuki rider Toni Elias the inaugural champion of the Moto2 World Championship and the 2017 MotoAmerica Superbike Champion. Gary Ritchie outdid himself once again in track prep, the flaggers, score keepers, tech people. John Sides, the water truck drivers, Eddie, Jodi and their whole staff orchestrated another spectacular event. The Joey Brown Memorial weekend was an exciting event, filled with passion, emotion and good racing. Following racing Eddie and Jodi, the Zimmerman’s, Digger Helm and the rest of the West Coast Dirt Track Series team gathered for the awards ceremony that would end an exceptional weekend of racing, reminiscing and time shared with friends. Plaques were presented for the top three of each class along with the envelopes for the

Pros. Comments of appreciation are always made at Willow about the girth of the envelopes presented and many comments about the whole positive and appreciative vibe of the weekend were shared. radley Howe, Editor-In-Chief of UTV Driver, and his navigator Cody Beeson took his Pro Turbo Polaris 1000cc to the top of the heap this past weekend at the Pure 250 UTV Off-Road Desert Race, which was the final event of the AVE Racing season. This race not only paid double points but because of Yamaha's involvement with this final event in the series, Howe un-officially picked up a hefty overall prize of $1,000 for the fastest vehicle of the day. All results are un-official until AVE/BP Racing has the opportunity to check all Trackers to verify laps, speeds in pits and how everyone negotiated the race course. However, for the moment, things look good for the UTV Driver, Alpine Stars, ITP, Baja

Designs, PRP Seats and Assault Industries sponsored Polaris Turbo driver Bradley Howe. He completed the six 41.6-mile laps at this final event with an elapsed time of 6:11:15 hrs. In the process he also managed to post the fastest lap of the day, when on his final lap he posted a 59-minute 5-second lap, averaging 42.7 MPH. At the finish line interview he thanked his crew profusely, his sponsors and the fact that his ITP tires went the entire 250 miles without a flat. Bradley's effort was being challenged by Justin Spencer and Jathan Cox (Can-Am X3 Turbo, Recycled Precision), as they were never more than seconds apart from each other for several laps, until Spencer's clutch let go on his fourth lap. What had been a classic duel of speed, navigating and driving skills, when Spencer pulled out of the race, Howe was left all to himself to bask in the glory of not only setting the fastest time but picking up the overall points championship, and the $1,000 Yamaha

cash, plus winning the 2017 Pro Turbo Class Championship. Second overall, 15 minutes back, was Christian Weber and Keith Coleman (Can-Am Turbo- Weber Racing), who completed all six laps in a time of 6:26:41 hours. He produced

S&S OFF ROAD MAGAZINE - DECEMBER 2017 - www.ssorm.com

steady laps of just over one-hour. They were all within a minute or so of each other. Noteworthy: That's what it took to negotiate this ambiguously deceptive but tough course. The first eight miles were nothing to relax, as it featured; rocks, washes, rocks, hills, rocks, short fast sections, rocks and did we say rocks? However, after race mile six or so, the course opened up to allow those fire-breathers to run. And run they did. However, there were some who were not ready for the high-speed jinx and as a result, belts, and clutches burnt, fuel consumption was critical and a few nasty hook-ups with immovable objects such as large boulders left one side or the other of the UTV without the necessary limbs. Rounding out the top three in overall points and finishing positions were Mike Nix and navigator Steve Schneider from Temecula CA. They finished all six laps in a time of 6:41:01 hours. This team was also a pleasant surprise as from the get-go; they kept showing up among the leaders. After checking corrected times (the time they actually started and where they were on the course), on several occasions during the early laps, Nix and navigator Schneider actually found themselves flirting with the lead of the race. That was exciting and I'm sure their crew was going nuts. Good job by the team. Sidebar: This was the Yamaha Pure 250. As such Yamaha Motors made a special effort of not only bringing their clout and $$$ to the event by posting a nice purse as Presenter of the final event, but they took the opportunity to also promote and hold the Yamaha Brand YXZ Demo, open to the public. They brought six brand new YXZ 2018 models of UTVs and allowed the general public to have a taste. They attracted hundreds of people who wanted to see how those YXZs ran. A specially constructed desert course was prepared by AVE/BP Racing just for them and away from the Pure 250 race course, which gave spectators a feel of what it is to race those vehicles in the California City desert. People were lined up for hours trying to get their driving turn, as it took about 30 minutes per group to not only hear instructions from the expert guides but to actually drive around the almost five-mile course specially designed for them. It was a great success marked by the fact that several Cal-City Officials showed up to take a "test drive. They had fun. Other Class winners The team of Mike Nix, Steve Schneider and Randall Niv (navigator) picked up the Pro 1000cc Class win, followed by Kevin Derenard and Brad Reyes (Polaris), in second while Jesse Gage and Dylan Gage (Yamaha YXZ) rounded out the top three in class. In the Sportsman 1000 Class it was Mike Pascarella with George Lashley (Polaris) who

took the top spot with a time of 6:52:57 hours for six laps. They were followed by Chris Elias and Adam Levings (Polaris) who were only able to complete five of the six laps before taking the checkered flag. Aaron Clark and Ethan Clark wound up in third, also with five laps. In the highly contested Pro Turbo Christian Weber and Keith Coleman nailed second place in class as they completed all six laps in a time of 6:26:41 hours. Rounding out the top three in class was Justin Spencer and Jathan Cox, who were in the hunt for the lead for most of the day until their clutch let go. Finally, in the PURE Bone Stock Class, it was Corbin Reed with navigator Kevin Howard, to take the class win (Polaris), while last year's Class Champion, Gil Ramos (Yamaha YXZ) who usually drives “solo” fell short by one lap to finish second, yet unofficially, still retained his points championship for 2017. As always, the weather in California City and its surrounding desert on East Kern County was near perfect. “Just a little more wind would have been nice," some said. If they only knew that a few days before the event, the area was

pelted with 50+ mph winds. But it can't all be perfect. The official points for the Series are currently being computed and held until the race is made official. At such time Points Champions Drivers and Navigators will be announced. The series is now over and the 2018 Series is going to be a good one. AVE/BP Racing would like to thank all racers and their families and crews for their support and participation, along with series sponsors, including but not limited to Yamaha, Ready-2-Print, Sunoco, Rugged Radio, Baja

Design, Prp Seats, PCI, Lazerstar, Fox, KC Hilites, Mad Media, UTV Underground, Supercharger Films, UTV Driver, Peralta Designs, Can-Am, IRC, Fierce Off-Road, Lawrence Equipment Racing, Ave Ranch and FUTI (Formula UTV International). The organization would also like to thank the great AVE/BP Staff, starting with owner Lois Peralta, Alan Bell (Race Director), Glen Boone (Tracking Chief) and the Boone boys, Christian, Clinton and Nathaniel (our photog), David “Red” Longacre (Tech), Mike Atkins (Checkpoints), Jay and Kerri Arnold (Radio Relay), Estefani

Gonzales, Scoring Director and Becky Gonzales, scoring; the Medical Team of Robert Sandoval and DJ Jeffreys; and lots of volunteers including racers-in-the-mend, Craig McIntosh, and friends, Charley Barney and friends plus the folks in the County and at City level. Without all these friends, the series would not be possible. AVE/BP RACING has an even more ambitious schedule for 2018 and a few surprises for UTV enthusiasts. Stay tuned. E

last-minute change of race tracks forced the staff and racers of CALVMX to rearrange their plans so as to keep the ninth round of their 2017 series on schedule. The substantial cooperation of the track managers at Perris Raceway who made their facility, with track alterations, available on extremely short notice, enabled the latest round to be extremely successful. Even with the change of venues, over 100 entries ranging from juniors to modern support competitors filled the Perris Raceway pit area. Joining the regular CALVMX classes was the Marty Tripes 100cc Works Revenge program. Tripes himself could be seen in the pits helping with bike setups and visiting with old friends. Loren Dimond made a rare appearance at a CALVMX event. Kawasaki mounted Dimond dominated the 50 Plus Vintage Expert class.

In the first moto, Dimond’s start off the concrete starting pad was perfect, propelling him into the lead followed by Tim McIntyre (CZ) and Ross Thompson (Husq). Loren was unopposed in the moto, taking the win with ease. of Heirich. Close behind the leading pro’s, Landers kept his little Yamaha’s throttle pinned to stay ahead of Dimond and Price on his way to the overall win. Newcomer Tom Contino (Maico) conquered the venerable Vintage Sportsman 250 Intermediate class. Contino used 2-1 moto scores to capture the overall over the Honda’s of Jim Barker and Nick Awtry. In the first moto, Awtry’s classic early model Elsinore was out front for the majority of the moto, ahead of Contino and Jim Barker giving him the moto win. In the second moto, Contino grabbed the lead on his German classic at the start ahead of Barker and veteran campaigner Craig Walker

(CZ). Contino’s Maico lived up to its reputation of great handling as he was scarcely challenged in the moto as he sped to the win, and more importantly, the overall victory. Barker’s 3-2 scores netted him second overall, followed by Awtry (1-4) in third. Other winners on the day included Ayrton Siega (CZ) in Vintage Sportsman 250 Expert, Greg Landers (CZ) adding to his overall win total with victories in Open Age Vintage Expert and Sportsman 500 Expert. Joining the winner’s column were Rickert Haag (CZ) in the GP-1 500 Intermediate class, along with Tommy Luera (Yam) in 60 Plus GP Intermediate and Jordan Cathey (Husq) in the Open Age Novice class.E
