DESCRIPTIONS OF THE COUNTRIES Latvia

L

atvia is the 2nd greenest country in the world, according to a study by the Environmental Performance Index. As this study was made public, many in SSE Riga started joking that it is probably because industrial production is so small that there are very low levels of emissionsю Nature is an essential value of the people of Latvia – whether it is visiting scenic Sigulda in autumn, taking a walk on the beach of Jūrmala or just going to the country on the weekend. In Latvian, there is a saying: “Nature is the medicine of a Latvian”. Be prepared for hearing and seeing most words in Latvian end with the letter “s”. Be prepared in a situation where students from other universities in Latvia think that SSE Riga people being those who study the most and act a bit like snobs.

‘’Welcome to Latvia, the Land that sings!’’ is a popular slogan with which Latvia has been advertised quite often, but the proof of which non-Latvians will seldom see, other than during SSE Riga choir performances and nights out with friends. Yet for those enthusiasts, who would like to look into this side of Latvian identity, the best choice would be to visit the National Song and Dance festival, celebrate Jāņi with some locals, join the SSER choir or just take a walk through any major Latvian town during the national holiday time. If you fancy Latvian cuisine, a good suggestion is to go to one of the eco-markets that are increasing in popularity and take place every other week usually in the market on Kalnciema Street or in the scenic upmarket district of Berga Bazārs. Or just be cliché and go to a Lido fast food restaurant. Every country has a sport that its people are most passionate about and here it’ is undoubtedly hockey. Our team, although definitely one of the best, might not always be among the top, but the fans sure are – to experience the atmosphere in a good hockey game in Arēna Rīga during a stay in Riga is a must.

There are issues of ethnic nature that can sometimes be visible in the society of Latvia. As the Latvian people only make up for just above 60% of the population and barely 40% in Riga, tensions sometimes spark with the Russian-speaking population about the official language status, citizenship-related questions and different interpretation of history. Despite this, you’ll find that SSE Riga is one of the places where people view each other by their wits and character, not their ethnicity.

Many people have commented on the locals being quite cold and unfriendly; believe that being reserved is just one of the first Latvian reactions to newly met people. You should not hesitate to greet, ask something from or start talking with the locals – they have a tendency to open up almost instantly.

Estonia

C

ongratulations on getting this far on the NCG. On this page you will find out what Estonians should and should not do in SSE Riga and Riga overall and also get a glimpse of some of the similarities and differences of the two neighbouring countries. SSE Riga is the place that will become your second home. People are friendly and helpful unless it’s the last minute before the deadline because then the computer lab is full of people printing and most probably the printer is either stuck or we have run out of paper.

Go to as many lectures and seminars as possible. Do all the home assignments and don’t hope that you’ll manage to learn everything before the exam. You won’t as there is not much time and there is a lot of material that gets more difficult per day. Besides, if you show yourself as a busy bee in the beginning of the year then you’ll be considered one till the rest of your studies and top scores are willing to help you without making faces.

Visit Maija. She always knows something that not everyone possesses knowledge of.

Say “Hi” to everyone; it’s a common courtesy. Everyone is greeted: students from Y1 – Y3 and older (yes, Finance Y2 is a “takistuskivi” for many students), exchanges, lecturers, administration, cleaning ladies, the tourists who have gotten lost in the school.

Be kind: “nagu küla koerale, nõnda koer külale”. The more you socialize, the more you exchange study materials, attend study groups and go together on trips, festivals and have fun.

Don’t eat in the classrooms or auditoriums. In the beginning it is easy to follow the rule but the more time passes the more things you have to do and the less time you have to eat but energy is still needed. It is a neverending struggle with the school but try to behave as long as possible. J

Don’t steal computer wires or mice from the computer lab. We know that sometimes you forget some wires at home and at some point using a mouse is easier than using the touch pad. In case of serious need for some computer gadgets, go and inform the necessary people.

Don’t unplug any wires, and if you do, then please put them back. Not everyone is a computer genius, and even if they knew how to plug the things back then it takes time.

Don’t cheat! Don’t even dear to think about it! If you happen to fail some exam (don’t worry, almost everyone has failed at least 1 exam), you get enough reexam tries. On the other hand, if someone even thinks that you might be cheating, then you will be expelled from SSE Riga.

Don’t do plagiarism. You will learn in the very beginning of the study year how to paraphrase and give references. Not mentioning where you got your information from or copy pasting is considered as cheating and gets you in serious trouble.

Lithuania Lithuania is mainly associated with basketball, beer and the most beautiful ladies. That’s true, but we have much more to show than these things. Did you know that we were the first ones of the Baltic countries to escape from the pressure of USSR, that the geographical centre of Europe is near Vilnius or that the cruel Hannibal Lecter was from Lithuania? Also, even though we always lose in Eurovision, we have boys who can play music with their teeth. Moreover, Lithuanians eat more kebabs than the Turkish people themselves, some also like to eat the sand. So, Lithuania definitely brings unique and talented students to SSE Riga, who usually tend to rule the school. Yet, to prepare for that fresh Lithuanians should know a few things about life in Riga. First, from the academic side of view, be ready to study a lot, not sleep enough and keep up with the tight deadlines. But remember the most important thing – don’t even try to cheat or get around the system. There is little mercy to the ones who do not obey the rules. Talking about the practical issues, be ready to live without your mamma and her tasty food. Your new flatmates will be your flat mates or roommates in dorms. Your new mamma’s food will be from Maxima, and your new favorite meal – the one with ‘akcija’. In general, products and services are quite the same in Latvia, however, some are a bit more expensive than in Lithuania. Also, people in the streets hardly speak any English, so sharpen up your Russian skills. Finally, the nightlife in Riga is much crazier than in Lithuania, so bring your best dancing and flirting skills!

We love food and we love free stuff even more. Thus, take advantage of all the banquets in school.

• Always keep close and unite with other Lithuanians. Our community – the strongest and the most unique in SSE Riga. • Be active in extra activities and take the most chief positions there – rule the school in Lithuanian manner. • Attend all parties in school and continue the original Lithuanians’ way of partying. • Make SSE Riga your true home: leave the school the latest, book all the auditoriums, play foosball and chill on the sofas in the lobby.

10

10

Don’t fight for places in the auditoriums – it is the Russian element. Contrary, make fun of those who do it.

• Don’t study all the time • Don’t buy drinks in school’s parties. Learn Lithuanian techniques to get them or earn drinking cards. • Don’t even try not to be a true Lithuanian here. You must follow these rules and keep the traditional image of a regular Lithuanian.

Belarus Potato, tractor, refrigerator “Minsk”, partisans, Lukashenko, vodka “Bulbash” – these are the things people think about when they hear the word Belarus. Partly, it’s true. But, what is more, Belarus is a wonderful country, the main wealth and pride of which was always its people. This is the thing which helped Belarus to get over difficulties in the past and this is also what will help them in the future. In order to prepare our little and green newcomers to possible challenges we wrote some kind of a comparison between Latvia and Belarus and provided you with several pieces of advice. Belarus differs a lot from Latvia, maybe more than any other country presented in SSE Riga. There is a difference in the economic policy (You will see it in the macroeconomics course), political system and culture. But you will also find some similarities. It will get obvious when you come to the first party. What newcomers from Belarus should really understand about SSE Riga is that there is no such a word as “haliava” here. Not at all. Forget about easy marks and free-riding, it’s SSE Riga, baby. You should work hard all the time in order to pass the exams. Besides it, in SSE Riga almost everybody has extra activities such as Ifund, DoO, PeakTime etc. It’s appreciated to be not only a top-score student but also a full member of SSE Riga society. Both good performance and extra activities imply team-work. This is what people often hate but this is also what people always need.

Manage all the things regarding to the residence permit, ISIC and insurance as far as you can.

Avoid such things as walking alone after midnight.

Look through all SSE activities and choose one or two you would like to participate at.

Don’t miss any party at SSE Riga

Bring Belarussian candies – they are much better.

Don’t bring all the clothes in one time. You will have an opportunity to take needed stuff later on.

Attend everything! Live in school.

Don’t be shy and try to communicate with everybody.

Be nice to people and always smile – it’s part of European culture

Don’t spend a lot of money at the beginning. There could be some problems at the end of it. DO NOT joke with deadlines!

Clean after yourself in the kitchen – otherwise you will lose around 60 $ per the year.(At least, We did so)

Don’t worry! Everything will be fineJ

Walk at the centre of Riga. It’s amazing

Moldova Moldova is the land of fine grapes, delicious food, beautiful traditions and hospitable people. It is known for Milestii Mici- the biggest underground wine cellar in Europe. The capital of Moldova is Chisinau, which is the main economic, cultural and social center of the country. Throughout the country you can find numerous picturesque places with breathtaking views and monasteries with their unique architecture. This is where all the Moldovan folk songs, poems and dances originated and were enriched over the years. There are two widely spoken languages in Moldova. The first language is Romanian and the second one is Russian, due to the USSR influence. Most of the young people also speak English. The Moldovan youth is very active, knows how to have fun and party all night long. Moldova is a small and special in its own way. It is worth visiting and getting to know its people.

12

Don’t take too much summer clothes. Do not be naive to think that you will be able to sunbathe.

Excited that you are coming to the seaside?! Not gonna happen!

Don’t think you are the smartest.

Don’t stay only within the Moldovan group.

Attend the Math lectures; even though you should know the majority of the course material, the last two topics will be completely unfamiliar.

Don’t listen to the stereotype that you should not speak Russian.

Take advantage of your residence permit! Travel as much as possible!!!

Don’t bring too much “brinza” with you, it smells.

Plan your trips according to the schedule. One missed lecture or seminar can cause you a fortune!

Don’t think that if the elective course is full on e-learning, you won’t be able to attend. Go talk to the lecturer as many students will simply drop it.

Don’t miss the deadlines, one minute makes a huge difference!

P.S . Don’t forget to go home: Scumpa noastră tărişoară ne aşteaptă!

Attend all SSER events, especially parties.

Ask a lot of questions. Be active!

Listen to the Organizations’ presentations and join them.

Buy your airline tickets (Air Baltic) in advance (3 months).

Sign-up for electives immediately.

Come to the class early, if you don’t wish to sit in the last row.

Ukraine First of all, sincere congratulations with becoming a part of Stockholm School of Economics and entering our society. If you are not from Ukraine, you have to know that the even though it is 9,5 times bigger than Latvia, we are very similar (economically, socially, politically). We are very outgoing, friendly, hardworking and open-minded nation (and you can have a chance to check it in real life). Back in Ukraine, we have precise schedule for the whole semester with a bunch of subjects going in a row, here you will have schedule only for a few weeks in ahead and you will study 1-2 subjects at a time. That helps to focus and understand subjects in more details. In SSER student life is boiling and the main source of fire is Student Association, which is much more developed than in Ukraine. These are 9 people: President , Vice President and 7 committees that work hard to make our life not only full of studies, but also full of fun. SSER SA organizes numerous sport events, mind-blowing parties and lots more, so you can enjoy yourself after being a hardworking student. After having first, hopefully breathtaking impression, there is little something you should know about SSE Riga if you are from Ukraine.

Study! And do it a lot, even when you will feel extra tired (at the beginning you will for sure), but as first month passes by, it will become your routine and you won’t even consider life without studying.

Follow all the deadlines precisely.

Communicate! Find new friends, don’t hesitate to make new connections and create unforgettable experience, as this is the time of your life and it is all in your hands.

Make connections, as this is the most valuable thing SSE Riga can give you.

Have fun! It is not all about just studying, these are the best years of your life and it is one of your main tasks to make the brightest memories in your life.

Do not put away all work for the last moment. Everybody say that, but here time management is a real asset, so if you got a task in a week, try to do it as fast as you have free time, which definitely doesn’t mean that you have to do all the tasks immediately.

First month will be quite intense, especially for the ones who are new here, so never forget to give yourself a break, don’t push yourself to the limit from the very first day, the limit will find you later on, so no rush with that. Those are the rules we all know, as we are taught in school, so they are a bit trivial (quite useful though as well).

Do not forget to relax. Studying is important and it is the reason we are all here, but don’t forget to take your time and discover the country and people.

Have an unforgettable year full of joy, knowledge and new friends.

Georgia Visit Georgia and you will find friendly people, historic cities, spectacular countryside - and a fascinating culture that combines aspects of Europe, the Middle East and Asia. This tiny country can offer the visitors everything they can wish for. Georgia is blessed with stunning scenery, a balmy climate and a rich variety of flora and fauna. In Georgia dramatic mountains rise, wolves, bears and hyenas lurk, rivers race through steep gorges, mountain folk bedeck stone shrines with sacrificed goats’ heads. Enclosed high valleys, wide basins, health spas with famous mineral waters, caves and waterfalls combine in this land of varied landscapes and striking beauty. With its stone houses built around vinedraped courtyards, and winding streets, the capital, Tbilisi, has a lively, Mediterranean atmosphere. Many houses in the capital have large overhanging balconies, which is something of a feature of Tbilisi. Dominating the skyline of the city is the huge Narikala Fortress, which contains the church of St Nicholas. Parts of the fortress with its huge defensive walls date back to the 4th century, although much of the present walls were rebuilt in the 8th century on the orders of the Arab Emirs. The number one fact that Georgia is known for is winemaking. More than 500 original varieties of grapes are grown here which raises interest towards the country. Visit this country just once and it will stay on your mind forever!

14

KNOW THEM...

W

hen you get to SSE Riga you will have to deal with these people every day. So, find them faster and be friendly to them in order to prolong yor fun years in the Baltic Harvard=)

He does not meet you in front of the school entrance. He does not sit in the library offering you books. He does not teach Financial Accounting, and you do not see him every day. However, he is all the time together with you. You feel his presence. He is an integral part of the school. He is our rector and his name is Anders Paalzow. You will first meet him personally face to face signing the study agreement. How should I behave? What should I say? Won’t I look stupid? All these questions become unessential at the moment you step into his cabinet, look in his wise eyes and suddenly understand why you have chosen exactly this university. Anders has a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Economics. He really loves his school, his students. He is Swedish, but also a little bit Latvian, Rigian.

Diana Pauna is the pro-rector and the heart of SSE Riga. All processes happening in the school are inevitably passing through Diana, who cares of everything to go smoothly. She is the person to approach in case of a success or a failure; approach Diana when you lack praise, or conversely, need a kick in the seat of the pants. We want you to remember, that Diana is the person, who is always there to help and encourage. She is always there to show you where you really belong when you could not see beyond the end of your nose tip, as well. Diana is all about intelligence and justice. These are the aspects that you are urged to inherit during your life at SSE Riga.

15

Morten? Ooh, Morten! We wish we had much more lectures and courses with him.. He is our favourite lecturer, lecturer number one. You will meet him while studying Micro, Macro, Statistics (all Year 1), and EU Studies (Year 2). And yees – that is still not enough, really!! Morten is our Danish SSE Rigian with absolutely fantastic international humor! During Micro sessions, Morten will teach you all about basic necessities and how people pick them. You will learn about soap, shoes, tomatoes, potatoes, and not only! During the Statistics course, as Morten says, you will see him more often than your wife or girlfriend... or mum. Macro course will force you to fall in love with GDP. And EU Studies... Just enjoy Morten for the last time :) Of course, we could suggest you to be attentive and not to fall asleep during the lectures. That is not necessary! Morten sometimes throws chalks and chairs, and not only...

Ben is an outstanding person. It’s not likely that you’ll encounter someone more knowledgeable and miscellaneous at SSER: his vast background in languages amazes everyone. This makes his lectures fun, interesting and value-adding. With him you’ll find out the difference between ‘economic’ and ‘economical’, the usage of ‘a’, ‘an’, and ‘the’, a thesis and an essay. He’ll be the one who will stop you from copy-pasting (i.e. plagiarizing) and introduce you to the APA referencing style. Ben likes to challenge the most arrogant experts in English especially if they graduated from Riga 1st Gymnasium. Indeed, do not overestimate yourself and your skills; otherwise, you can fail his courses immediately. Very valuable information is addressed during the writing labs, when Benjamin can help you with the tasks individually. He sets really high standards for the students, but don’t be upset if you do not get everything from the very beginning, be hard-working!

Evita is the Manager of BSc Admissions and Exchange Programme at SSERiga. Before becoming part of the University, she is the first one to interact with us and provide all the necessary information regarding documents and processes you need to get through before the beginning of your academic trip. In the second year she is the one who provides the students with the infrmation about exchange programme, and also she is the main coordinator of the incoming exchange students. During the year, if you are a compadre, country ambassador or interested in active promotion of our Uni, you will be an often guest in her office, on the second floor.

Maija is our Administrative Assistant at SSERiga, and is responsible for SSE dormitories. Maija is an extremely lovely and cheerful person. She is able to provide you with a lot of information, regarding not only accommodation in dorms, or how to get to one or another office in the city, but also about all the things she knows, because she is so open any happy to help you anytime. Maija is actively involved in Uni’s life, and you begin your day with a “Hi! and a smile from her. At most events she is the one who lights people up, due to the great amount of energy she has inside her heart.

Katja is the person you would like to approach with questions regarding your courses. She sets up the schedule and lets everyone know about any changes via e-mail. She sends out the signup sheets for elective courses. If one of them is already full on e-learning, you should approach Katja at the beginning of the course and ask her to sign you up as most likely some people will drop out. She also divides students into study groups, so, if you wish to make any changes and it is possible, pass by her office or drop her an e-mail. As for international students, especially those who need a residence permit, approach Katja in advance to ask for documents required by the Migration office for the renewal of the permit. Do so at least two months in advance as Katja is quite busy with graduation at the end of the academic year. 17

Pause.movietime is the special club for movie lovers. If you really like to watch good films and n ot some cheap co medy with weird plot an d childish humor , then you should be ve ry enthusiastic about this club. Once a week in the ev en ing the students are invited to watch a carefully selected an d highly ranked film in the Soros audito rium. Moreover, movies depend on spec ial occasions, lik e International Wom en’s day or Chri st mas, which brings som e special feeling of the holiday. If one is very persuasiv e and there is sufficien t demand, there is also a possibility to arra nge a football, ho ckey, or basketball m atch broadcastin g with beer, chips and al l the shouting.

This club is all about fear and greed, joy and disappointment, winning and losing, being a part of a very close and special circle of friends. It is a very intelligent, strategic and exciting card game, probably the most popular in the world. So, you should at least once go to see how it happens, as everybody is always happy to see new faces. Poker is mostly played by guys, but some girls show up too! The game takes place whenever and wherever there is anyone willing to play, ranging from the laptop room to a student’s apartment, so if you’re in the mood, just gather together and have a great time!

Charity club

Choir club The choir tradition is deeply rooted in the culture of the three Baltic countries, and with choir members representing all three Baltic countries the SSE Riga Choir is in a unique position for carrying this tradition forward. The SSE Riga Choir unites current and former students who are passionate about singing. As a multi-cultural choir, the repertoire surpasses genre, period and national limitations.

The concert programmes vary in form and theme, and include Medieval, Renaissance, sacred, jazz, and popular music - and also world ethnic music from India, the Australian aborigines, and the Native Americans. This allows both singers and listeners to expand their knowledge and understanding of the endless variations in music over time and experience its beauty.

PARTIES AND EVENTS *free space is reserved for you Partying is an essential part of the life in SSE Riga. One can’t survive the studying process without a moment of relaxation. A party usually steps in at a quite suitable moment: when the pressure is high, the last week spent has been very nervous, when a report has been submitted or an exam taken. Each party has its unique dress code, decorations and various entertainments. Parties are held on Fridays and last from 22:00 to 03:00. The entrance fee usually is 2-3 LVL, but those with a dress code have a cheaper entrance.

Newcomers’ Party. The time has come. This is the

first time in SSE Riga when you can really go wild and get convinced that our motto really is “Study hard, party harder!” The hard and long day of activities, ice breaking and challenges is over and the real fun begins. So time to relax a bit, dive into the flow of new feelings and get to know the biggest party animals in SSE Riga (and mark yourself as one of them).

Baptizing Party. After going through difficult tasks to

prove that you really have what it takes to study here at SSE Riga you will be able to call yourself a real SSE Riganian. However your survival skills will be checked in a really challenging way - they say that last year people were evacuated due to the fire on the first floor... :)

Summer Symposium. After an exhausting day of

sports, it’s time for a massive party and night adventures. If you don’t fall asleep too early, you have a good chance of seeing topless girls swimming in the lake as well as some cars bumping into trees (we have warned you not to drive when drunk).

New Year party. This party has happened only once

but some people still refer to that as the most unorthodox party they have ever attended. It’s not a rumor that during the New Year’s night either weird things or miracles happen. During that time both things happened and both in unexpectedly big amounts. They say that New Year’s Eve should be spent with dearest and closest people. Well, after couple of months you’ll realize that they are referring to this school and these students.

Takeover party.

After the results are announced during the Christmas party, the newly elected board of SA starts to operate. And what is the best way to check, how well they are performing in comparison with the previous board? Correct, by organizing a party where they will need to face each other and set all dots on who is better in different “duels”. A second “must attend” party for everyone, as it is full of different dares and challenges.

Valentine’s Day party.Valentine’s

Day is the most romantic, passionate and sweet time of the year. One may argue this ‘holiday’ is only for those people who are together and single people are feeling much lonelier at that day than usually. This is not entirely true, as the happiness comes from sharing something with others – and there is no one who can stop you from going to the centre and sharing hugs or kisses or nice words with everyone. Nonetheless, even if you haven’t found your valentine yet – don’t feel depressed. Come to the party and maybe you’ll find one or two.

Peak time party.

The greatest worldwide competition organized by SSE Riga students is almost over, yet closed event only for us and PT participants is going to shake our school as people from all over the world surely know how to party as well. It is a great opportunity to meet new people from different places and even from such far countries as China, Malaysia, Brasil or Korea. If you haven’t done that during the event, you should hurry up, as those are very interesting, smart and active people! 27

Cafés

Art Café Sienna, StrElnieku iela 3 This place is all about Paris bohemia integrated into Riga Art Nouveau. Fortunately, the most bohemian café in the city is located just in front of our school. The prices are pretty high there, however, it is on the purpose. The world famous Latvian chef Martins Ritins makes the sweets you may find there. SSE students’ total favorite is goat cheesecake with caramel or cherry sauce. If you are not a lover of sophisticated desserts, the handsome owner bakes the croissants you are offered there, and those are must-try, obviously. Tourists, wealthy seniors, bankers and SSE students (surprise, surprise) – are the core public of the glamorous place. Do not forget to stalker those privileged Y2 and Y3 students who have a loyalty card there, which gives 20% discount for take-away drinks. Just to mention, they use 4% milk ordered specially from countryside and take-away coffee is legendary awesome there.

Coffee & Lunch (C&L), Antonijas iela 13 They say that while sitting there you can watch our rector making phone calls wearing slippers and home shorts. They also say your marketing lecturer is fond of the place. Recently C&L was a place especially admired by a special crowd. However, when the director and the staff changed, it became open to all clients. The place is outstanding because of the location and high-quality food, as it is a real pleasure to observe famous Alberta Street while having a tasty dinner. Usually they have wide range of self-made cakes and pies there. Try them.

36

36

Sweetday CafĂŠ, TirgoNu iela 9, Old Town This is probably the coziest place in the Old Town. It is perfect for reading a book, studying economics, meeting friends, and dating beloved ones. What is special about Sweetday CafĂŠ is that you always feel belonging there, in whatever mood or life situation you are. Coffee drinks and homemade sweets are treated as arts there. You must try their pasta and spend some time on the terrace (on warm days, obviously). The last, but not the least, purely Latvian and very pretty girls work there.

Do not forget that SSE students have 10% discount there. Just show your ISIC with the logo of the school, and in course of time be sure the staff will remember you. Behave yourself, as the owner of the place is friend with some SSE students.

ALL ABOUT PLACES TO GET FOOD

Red Fred,Macaroni, Kabuki, AudEju iela 14

SkrIveru MAjas SaldEjums (Skriveru Home-made Ice Cream), Alberta iela 1

These three brothers are of the same group of restaurants. They are integrated into Galleria Centrs shopping mall in the Old Town and are placed side by side, so you can easily choose one depending on your mood and wishes. Red Fred is perfect for watching sports and drinking beer with the most awesome garlic bread ever. Loud, friendly meetings are a usual story there. Macaroni is more about pasta, obviously. Nothing to say about it, but the atmosphere is very nice there. Kabuki is the most famous of these three. It offers you tasty sushi, other Japanese dishes and a number of delicious tea flavors.

This is the right place for those obsessed with homemade sweets and small family businesses. Eventually, Skriveru family sweets company are not so small by now, they are one of the biggest players within the niche, actually. To the delight of SSE students there is a homemade ice-cream shop next to the school. The Skriveru sisters try to make their products special and offer you a wide range of fresh ice cream with the most desirable tastes, the sisters also add chocolate sauce and berry jams to cover your precious ice cream. Fresh berries, fruits and some salt variations. Be sure you try as much ice cream flavours as you can, and do not miss cheese and estragon combination! It is definitely important to mention that they have Valmiermuiza beer ice cream‌ and guess what do they put additionally instead of berry jam? Black bread crackers, right. So go there, immediately.

Each 12th day of each month all three restaurants offer you 50% discount.

38

38

Tokyo City, KrišjANa Barona iela 2, TErbatas iela 2 This “Japanese” food restaurant is a special story. They offer decent sushi and two-for-one pricing. If you want good sushi for a good price, go there and get some, as you pay for a portion getting two instead. Another advantage of the place is their working hours on Friday and Saturday nights. It is a perfect spot to stop while partying hard and get some tasty meals and Valmiermuiza beer.

KulinArija, Elizabetes iela 8a This is one of the most wallet-friendly places where you can get good quality meals. You will definitely meet a number of SSE students and graduates there, so do not be scared by long queues they usually have, as you will never be alone. They have almost everything your “not sophisticated” stomach would like to have. However, the must-try is their smooth peachy salmon, but try to be one of those lucky people who are in time to get it. In addition, their pastry is really tasty and their workday starts at 7.00. Obviously this gives you an opportunity to grab some delicious buns and take-away drink to color a day full of economics.

BrIvosta, Kalpaka bulvAris 12 Let me introduce to you the Freeport of Riga. A number of SSE graduates have their meals at this spacious place. The price for the day offer is close to the one we have in Daily. However, it is a nice idea to have a walk in the park and fresh up your mind outside the school. The food is good there as well as the service.

KID, Pulkveža Brieža iela 2 KID is an art restaurant famous for its painting exhibitions, high-quality food and professional service. There are two KID restaurants in Riga, and both have different menu. Price range is higher than average, however, this is the place you want to stay for a long time. They have very comfortable conditions for group studies, team projects and other kinds of SSE students` favorite activities. If you passionately want to start spending your pocket money from the very beginning of a day, then my best suggestion could be to have a breakfast there. It does really load you with tasty food, positive emotions and good mood. They offer very tasty ginger tea, indeed.

39

+ some more extra places: Chinese, K.ValdemAra iela, 21 This is a really Chinese place, with all appropriate decorations and barely Latvian speaking Chinese staff. It is located on the street full of offices; so do not be surprised by a decent number of corporate slaves. Food is tasty there. Food box, Antonijas iela 6a Another place admired by SSE students. It is near, it is cheap, and it is all about kebab. Go there, meet your schoolmates, have a kebab together and come back to school. As simple as that. Take advantage of SSE Riga special discount - show your student card and enjoy a tasy meal for only 2 LVL. Ze Donats, K.ValdemAra iela 18 If you are fond of having Starbucks Coffee in your hands chewing Krispy Kreme donuts - this place is for you. Donut paradise. They say last year`s Business Reactor participants enjoyed the donuts sitting on K.Valdemara Street in house coat while reading a newspaper. The best you can do about this place is bringing loads of donuts to school and make your schoolmates jealous.

DOMINA

Address: Ieriku iela 3 (trolleys 18, 23; bus 5) Working hours: 10.00-21.00 Webpage: www.domina-shopping.lv Girls, stay calm! This place is perfect for buying shoes. And when we say perfect, we really mean it. :) Danija, NS King, ABC King, Eiropas Apavi, Bata, Ecco, Aleksandra, Salamander are only the most affordable shoe stores, there are more of them in Domina! Look for such stores as Benetton, Monton, Gerry Weber, LeeCooper. Unique hand-made accessories by Latvian designers can be found in Rotu Studija. Located not in the centre of Riga, the place is spacious and the calm atmosphere helps you not to get mad while your girlfriend is choosing the RIGHT pair of shoes ;) If you happen to be in Domina shopping centre, try the real Italian ice-cream Soprano (special advice: try strawberry, grapefruit and pistachio taste). Don’t miss the seasonal sales event called BAZAAR. Fantastic discounts up to 70% and a non-stop party going on. It is possible to blabber about the place a lot, but the bottom line is that it is one of the best places in Riga to do your shopping.

ALFA

GALLERIA RIGA

Address: Brivibas iela 372 (trolleys 4, 16; buses 1, 14, 21, 40, 32E; tram 6) Working hours: 10.00-22.00 Webpage: www.alfaparks.lv Clothes, shoes and anything else can be found there. Mango, Zara, Bershka, Sportlands, JYSK for the entire household stuff you might feel the need of… The thing that makes Alfa special: THEY HAVE CINEMA THERE! Cinamon offers lower prices than you can find in the centre. The webpage (www.cinamonkino.lv) is not available in English though…Unfortunately, it takes 25 minutes to get there. If you have a nice company, spending almost half an hour in a bus is not a disaster.

Address: Dzirnavu iela 67 (between Brivibas iela and Terbatas iela) Working hours: 08.00-22.00 (Rimi); 10.00-21.00 (1-6th floors); 10.00-01.00 (7th floor) Webpage: www.galleriariga.lv A new shopping centre in Riga is fighting for being a competitor of Galerija Centrs; this means you can expect nice offers and quite big discounts. The place is not so spacious, but also not crowded. As for the shops, there is the usual kit of foodclothes-shoes-jewelry-etc. On the roof of Galleria Riga you will find the biggest roof terrace in the Baltics (more than 2500 m²). The view is amazing! There is also a concert hall and even 5 bars and restaurants. In winter you can enjoy ice-skating on the roof!

RIGA PLAZA

GALERIJA CENTRS Address: Audeju iela 16 (Old Riga) Working hours: 08.00-22.00 (Rimi); 10.00-21.00 (1-4th floors) Webpage: www.galerijacentrs.lv The best location (Old town) and a wide variety of shops: RIMI, The Body Shop, Reserved, Cubus, Monton, Vero Moda, Stepper, Danija, Ecco, La Senza, Kolonna, Bik Bok, Swatch, Drogas, Karen Millen, Guess, the only specialized female sportswear shop in Riga (NikeWoman) etc. If you’re looking for something (should it be books, music, phones, computers, clothes, shoes, food or anything else) our piece of advice is to start your search in Galerija Centrs. Trivia: come to Galerija Centrs at Christmas – it is absolutely gorgeous there.

All the coolest shops are there, of course. The best thing about Riga Plaza is that it is not only a shopping centre, but a fun park and cinema as well. You can play bowling, pool, play video games or have a crazy party in Fantasy Park – one of the biggest amusement parks in Riga (www.fantasypark.lv). Another fun fact is that Multikino cinema is located in Riga Plaza (www. multikino.lv). Bottom line: you can live all day long in Riga Plaza and never get bored! ;)

ACCOMMODATION One of the first dilemmas which newly admitted students have to face is choosing between school’s dormitories and individual apartments. Each option has its benefits and drawbacks. Therefore, you should carefully consider both options before making your decision.

Dormitories Location: Patversmes iela 22 The residents of the new dormitory occupy two floors with newly renovated rooms. There are two types of rooms: for 2 or 3 people, which cost 80 EUR and 100 EUR respectively. The rooms are small and you won’t have a lot of personal space. However, you will never be bored and will have the chance to connect with different people. The dorm has two kitchens on each floor with all the necessary equipment, including refrigerators, microwaves and washing machines. However, the school will no longer supply the kitchens with pans, pots and dishes so everyone will need to buy its own. Apart from this, there are two study rooms and a leisure corner with table football table and other table games, which sometimes consume quite a lot of students’ time. A necessary thing which no SSE Riga student could manage without – wireless internet connection – is also there. Additionally, for those who have cars, there is a parking lot next to the building. On the other hand, those who are willing to use public transport can easily reach dorms by trolleybus No. 3 as well as buses No. 11 and No. 33. A ride from the school to dormitories might take approximately 30 minutes from which 15 are on foot. If you decide to stay in the dormitories, at first you will have to sign a contract with the school’s administration. We have a lot of rules at SSE and dormitories are not an exception. If you stay there, rules such as no smoking in the building, bringing guests without noticing Majia, emergency rules and many others apply. As dorms are watched by a guard

46

46

in the school 24 hours a day via video cameras, there will be no strict ladies sitting at the reception. Each resident gets a plastic card which allows her/him to get into dorms at any time. Summing everything up, the dorm is a good place for those who prefer comfort, calm and rest, as usually people living there get used to each other and are like a big family. Apart from this, there are different events and parties organized in the dorm.

Apartments The most common choice for SSE Riga students is living in an apartment. Usually apartments are rented in the centre of the city, from 5 to 25 minutes of walk from the school. You can rent a studio apartment just for yourself. But it’s more fun and convenient to gather more students and rent a big flat. This way each one gets its own room and at the same time it will be more fun. Usually, the number of students living together varies from 3 to 6 people. The more you are the cheaper the rent will be. Compared to the price of the dormitories there is not so much of a difference in price. Especially if it’s close to the university and you don’t need to spend on transportation. In addition, living in the centre of the city gives you an exciting opportunity to explore Riga’s wonderful parks, places of entertainment, different sights and, of course, the nightlife. Another commonality of living in an apartment is that students often live together with people of different nationality and gender, thus, this gives and amazing chance to learn and understand

other cultures, find out about their traditions and get to know foreign languages. A bigger “family” living under the same roof is also a great opportunity to save some money since a rent for a flat consisting of two-three rooms varies from 180 LVL to 350 LVL. Students usually manage to get together with their course-mates and look for possible flats beforehand. However, if you are struggling with finding an apartment, there is no need to worry. Older students willingly share information, mostly via e-mail, and can easily help you find a place. At the beginning of the upcoming academic year you will receive quite a few proposals for renting a whole place or a room with your fellow students. However, if you don’t want to wait, you can take the lead in your hands and find an apartment by yourself and gather a wonderful company of students, which shouldn’t be difficult. A perfect place for finding a flat is the internet. It is strongly recommended to pay attention only to those advertisements that have photos, so that you could get a good insight into what kind of conditions you are facing.

Tips & Links 1. The most important necessity for SSE student is internet connection, thus, you should clarify this with the owner of the flat beforehand. 2. Decide whether you want to have your private room or to share. This becomes of key importance if you and your roommate have completely different habits or if one is used to living and studying in a quiet atmosphere. 3. Decide what the optimal distance from your apartment to school is as this makes your process of

searching for a flat easier. 4. Bargain for the price of the apartment. The owners might sometimes introduce discounts if you decide to live for a fixed amount of time. 5. Find out whether there is furniture in the apartment since getting your own will require additional and unnecessary effort. Dorms vs. Apartments 1. The dormitories are really far from school, thus, you will spend more time getting from one place to another. However, trolleys and buses go quite often and on workdays they work until midnight. In addition, you will need to spend on taxi every time we’ll have a party at SSE Riga. 2. If you live in the dorms, you will always easily get help from the administration, especially from Maija, who is known as an extremely caring and responsible person. 3. In most cases dorms are cheaper. 4. If you rent a flat, you will have to take care of many things by yourself, including furniture, internet connection and many more small details, whereas those who live in dorms have everything they need. 5. If you are a freshman and you decide to rent an apartment you have the opportunity to choose with whom you’ll live. Yet, if you’ll live in the dormitories you’ll have to find a way to get along with your roommate even if you don’t like him/her.

TIPS FOR NON-EU STUDENTS Important information for nonEU students: SOS advice (residence permits, Insurance) As the non-EU citizens have to receive a residence permit to legally stay in Latvia for a period of 3 years, we have decided to describe this procedure thoroughly, step by step.

1. X-Ray. In case you haven’t done it in your home

country, you can go and do a chest X-Ray in a hospital, which is very near to the School (Mednieku iela, 7). There is a doctor, Dace Lustika, who is responsible for SSE Riga students. Before going there, kindly ask Maija Pole to phone the doctor from her office (on week days only!). The service costs 3 LVL.

2.Get your insurance. Once you arrived

in Riga, you should immediately get your insurance. One of the cheapest fees is offered by an agency located at Brivibas iela, 39. You will be charged 29 LVL. This kind of insurance does not cover the cost of visits to the doctor or medicine (obviously, it’s very cheap!). It’s just a formality needed to receive your residence permit.

3. Prepare all the documents beforehand. Make sure you have all the

necessary documents such as the X-Ray control, the insurance, the travel document and the reference from the School (issued by Maija Pole). The ones who haven’t reached 18 should contact Evita Lukina: she will be your fiduciary then. You ought to call the Immigration Department in advance in order to appoint a meeting. Again ask Maija for all the contacts with the Immigration Service. Be ready to miss some lectures and seminars during the first two weeks of studies.

48

48

4.Fight for yourself. When the meeting

date approached, plan your time in such a way that you get to the Immigration Service 10 minutes earlier (to be on the safe side). The easiest route is to take the trolley # 3, get off at Eveles iela station; then to go up the Eveles iela until you see the tramline. You have to CROSS the road and wait for the 11th tram near the tram road. You’ll have to get down at the 4th stop (2. Meza kapi). After that you’ll be able to find a big grey building just in front of you (located at Čiekurkalna 1. līnija 1, k-3).When you’re invited to the desk, gather all your patience since sometimes those ‘ladies’ do not act in that friendly manner as they look like at first. You can be blamed for not sending all the documents via mail even if you did it. Maybe you will need to write and sign a text in Latvian that confirms that you have presented all the materials to the Department and that you realize how grave the consequences if you’re lying. Yeap, harsh reality! But never mind. Be confident and know your rights! Moreover, dress up neatly since they will take your photo for your residence permit.

5. It’s not the end. Finally, having got your

residence permit, you should also declare your residence. For most of you it will be the dormitories’ address (Patversmes iela, 22). It costs 3 LVL, and you can pay either in the Immigration Department with the credit card or in one of the other local departments by cash (the contacts will be given to you by those polite ladies in the office). You should declare the place you are living in within one month after receiving the document; otherwise you’ll be fined mercilessly. That will be it for the first year of your stay. In the future you’ll have to renew the residence permit, and the procedure is much simpler. But when you finally get it, you are free to travel all around Europe. So, once again, be patient and do not stress out!

TIPS FOR the Newcomers A distinctive feature of SSE Riga is the tendency towards cohesion and collaboration. We are used to sharing our experience, be it bad or good, advise and mentor youngsters. Here you are: a bunch of tips that focus on both academic life and other activities.

1. Elective courses On a random day you’ll receive an e-mail from the administration that the sign-up sheets for the electives have been posted on the e-learning platform. By that time you need to think carefully on what courses YOU will be eager to enroll in (there are not so many options for the Y1s in the fall semester). After that you should rush to your mailbox account asap, since the number of students enrolled is limited (around 30-40). There are some fans who tickle each and every course and when the class is formed they sign out. In our turn, we would suggest taking it reasonably. Firstly, you won’t have so much time to attend each and every elective, and secondly, you have three more years for this.

2. Time management Studies at SSER remind of an avalanche of information which the student has to acquire, process, and present. Therefore one should bear in mind the golden rule: plan your time in order not to screw up. If you schedule a day in such a way that you manage to fulfill the tasks earlier you’ll have a possibility for any kind of leisure, which is a luxury especially for Y2s. The first month will be really tough; however afterwards people somehow manage to go in for sports, visit 4-hour debate sessions and chill out. For some

courses you‘ll be assigned to a lot of readings, so you can split the reading packages, articles in compendium among your peers, this helped us out indeed! When you have a project work deadline then not everything depends on you. You should use your communication skills and encourage others to work hard. In any case, you are not the first one who struggles with the system, you’ll survive!

3. Discounts There is a belief that students like cheap stuff (of course, if your father is not Abramovich). The ISIC card gives you endless opportunities of getting discounts on knitwear, shoes, underwear, haircuts, tickets to theatres and what’s more, on taxi services!!! Make sure you get your ISIC as soon as possible to receive substantial discounts on public transportation as well. Another category of discounts is discounts at stores. Most probably you’ll buy food at Rimi, Maxima, or Super Netto. They have very friendly and flexible discount system. Every week they publish a brochure with all the goods which are on discounts. Just follow their website and choose affordable options.

4. Leisure Try to make your leisure time connected with physical activities, in other words, practice sports. A load of intellectual information will overwhelm your brain, so if you don’t exercise your body, you’ll become less and less productive. Going to a gym or a swimming pool will increase your stamina and your work will produce more fruitful results.
