We are living beings adapted for action and can move and load our bodies in many different ways to achieve a wide range of tasks. We generate forces in our muscles and joints every time we move, whether we are running, jumping, lifting or simply standing up. The way in which we move not only underpins sporting performance but also affects our ability to avoid and return from injury. Most of the time we withstand pretty impressive loads and movements with no problem at all but the way we distribute forces through our ankles, knees, hips, back and shoulders can lead to overuse injury or, in some cases, to acute injury. Understanding how these forces are distributed is important in understanding injury risk but also to shape rehabilitation after injury or surgery, and for those looking to optimise performance in sport.

Biomechanics Lab The lab Our state-of-the-art 3D biomechanics laboratories are equipped with Vicon motion analysis systems synchronised with AMTI multi-axis force platforms to capture body movements and forces in three dimensions. Our biomechanists test over 1000 patients per year, from recreational to elite level, so your data can be compared with our extensive database for evidencebased biomechanical analysis of your performance, deficits and movement strategies. Performance Many factors contribute to high levels of on pitch or on court performance. When training, it can be difficult to know where our main weaknesses are and where performance gains can be made. We can end up trying to train everything and not really improving anything or we guess and target something we don’t need to. However, if you have a clear idea of what your areas of strength and weakness are, you can be much more effective in your training. Our database of nearly 7000 athletes jumping, landing, cutting and running allows us to compare your performance to all those who have been tested in the SSC Biomechanics Lab.

Our database The power behind this service is the database we have developed with the thousands of performance tests measured in our labs. We can compare your performance against the best we have seen and against those who have been injured or avoided injury, and can tell you where you fit relative to similar populations. This database expands every day and our analysis algorithms adapt to include your data (where you have given us express permission), so every day the power of the testing improves. This allows us to identify the key areas for you to focus your rehabilitation and training.

Cutting biomechanics/ performance Change of direction biomechanics influence not only your speed and agility on the field of play but also your injury risk . Our tests will highlight the key variables determining performance so you can tailor your training to address these areas.

VU performance test SSC have developed a unique field-based test which is performed whilst wearing cutting-edge inertial sensors. These sensors allow us to measure joint angles, and to calculate loads by comparing your data to our database in real time. This is the most advanced field test in the world and bridges the gap between the gym testing and your performance on the field of play.

The tests Maximum strength The ability to produce large amounts of force is an important factor in most sports. It is strongly related to jumping, accelerating, sprinting, decelerating and changing direction (or ‘cutting’) performance. This quality is also widely recognised as important in injury prevention and so forms a large focus of our rehabilitation programmes.

Sporting actions not only require large amounts of force, but being able to generate force quickly is often what separates the best from everyone else. This is what explosive strength is all about. Your ability to jump higher or accelerate faster than those around you creates or shuts down the scoring situations on pitch.

Think of those athletes who you have played with or against who seem to just disappear when you think you are getting close to them. That ability to rebound, rapidly pushing at the ground, is called reactive strength; basically a measure of how bouncy you are. This is an important quality that underpins sprinting and cutting performance.

The gold standard test for measuring lean muscle mass and fat mass. This test will give you the most accurate measure of your percentage bodyfat that is available.

VO2 max testing This maximum effort test is the measure of the highest volume of oxygen you can consume while exercising. It is basically a test of how fit you are. We can run this test on the treadmill or the wattbike and give you a full report of where you sit relative to normal populations.

ECG – electrocardiogram The standard 12-lead electrocardiogram is a representation of the heart’s electrical activity recorded from electrodes on the chest surface. The reading only takes a few minutes to obtain and does not involve any invasive procedures. The results are interpreted by a Consultant Physician.

Performance ab markers placed on your body are picked up by infrared cameras, allowing us to record your every movement in three dimensions at hundreds of frames per second. Post ACL Reconstruction Program ACL Rehabilitation We offer a unique post operative ACL Package which is driven by over 5 years of reserach and nearly 5000 patinets. Our reserach has been able to identify critical factors which reduce the risk of re-injury and allow you target specifc areas of rehabilitation with your own therapist’s.

Surgery Whether you have had your ACL reconstruction at SSC or elsewhere, your surgeon can refer you into our program either before surgery or after to benefit from the impressive results of our research.

Biomechanics Lab Lite Our initial testing takes place around 2-4 months after your surgery, depending on your surgeon’s protocol. At this stage we can chart your early progress through rehabilitation, see how you compare to others on the same journey. Testing identifies specific areas for you to focus on, along with whoever is guiding you rehab, relating to strength, explosiveness and coordination.

Biomechanics Lab Then between 6 and 9 months the Biomechanics Lab service allows us to assess your physical readiness to return to play and identify deficits to reduce your re-injury risk. Working with your surgeon and your physiotherapist or rehabilitation coach we can compare your risk to our database, identify strengths and weaknesses in your performance and provide a final focus. This is a highly demanding test battery and you must be running and jumping prior to participating in it.
