Chancellor’s Message Banking sector is increasing in scale and complexity. There is need to recruit and train the additional staff as public sector banks will have to face the challenge of retirement of a large part of their workforce. Some estimates suggest that close to about 500,000 employees of public sector banks would retire over next five years. Apart from this, the Banking & Financial Services Industry as a whole is on the path of growth and is at the same time wrought with challenges. This sector needs more and more readily employable trained professionals to rise up to the occasion. It is in recognition of this need that we have set up Symbiosis School of Banking Management. The next batch will pass out in April 2013. I am confident that you will find the students adequately equipped with the knowledge and trained with the necessary skill sets. I welcome you to visit our campus and recruit our students. Dr. S. B. Mujumdar President & Founder Director, Symbiosis Chancellor, SIU

From the Director’s Desk I have immense pleasure and pride in introducing to you our bright, vibrant, young Banking Management graduates. Banking in India has come a long way traversing three distinct phases: the era of nationalization and priority sector lending, the era of financial sector reforms in the nineties and now the era where technology enabled, customer focused financial conglomerates operate in multiple segments of the financial sectors. The demands of an emerging economy like ours on the Banking and Financial Services sector are multi-dimensional. Banks will have to master the fine art of balancing growth and inclusive development even as they relentlessly innovate to bring a wider range of financial services to the doorstep of the next generation customer. Banks would hence require appropriately trained management professionals to meet the emerging challenges. The two year MBA programme in Banking Management is designed to provide specialized knowledge and training to address not just the growing requirement but also the increasing complexity of operations of the banking sector. More than 50% of the courses are focused on Banking and Finance and thus equips the students with relevant knowledge and managerial skills to work effectively in banks and other organisations of the BFS sector with minimum training intervention after recruitment. I cordially invite you to Placement 2012 and look forward to a long-term, mutually enriching relation with your esteemed organization. Dr. Bhama Venkataramani

Director Symbiosis School of Banking Management.

Industry Interface Industry Interface is indeed one of the critical differentiators in a B-school and has a direct impact on the quality of learning and research output. Appreciating this SSBM has industry professionals at all stages starting from policy making to curriculum design, delivery and evaluation. SSBM has constituted an Advisory Board comprising of senior professionals from banks. Besides we have two senior professionals from the Banking &Financial services industry on the Board of Studies to help decide the range and depth of courses to be offered. (Please refer website to know more about the members). About 80% of the programme is taught by practising and retired bankers who are also closely involved in evaluation of the minor and major projects apart from the courses they teach. As such there is a very strong level of engagement with industry professionals. Some of the other areas where industry interaction is prevalent are given below. Seminar: Banking & Financial Services Sector in India - VISION 2020 Symbiosis School of Banking Management hosted a seminar on July 7, 2012. The theme was the challenges and opportunities to be faced by banking sector in the years to come. We were honoured by the presence of •

Mr. Ajay Banerjee – CGM, Bank of Maharashtra who spoke on the changing demographic profile and how this was affecting the customer’s preferences. He emphasized on how the future of banking was filled with sunshine as majority of the future customer base were below the age of 25.

Mr. Amit Kumar – Senior Executive VP, HDFC Bank – He dwelled on the huge expanse of opportunities opening in the banking sector through increase in household income and the necessity for wealth management and how this would be met through a tenfold increase in bank branches and ATMs

Mr. V. Ramanmurhty – Executive Director, RBS – He gave an overview on the Indian Economy and spent time on the business related and prudential regulation of implementing IFRS in the country. He pointed out the dismal position of NPA outstripping credit growthbut finished on the hopeful note of foreign banks entering the Indian business sphere

Mr Rajiv Maniar – Vice President HDFC Mutual Funds Co – He pointed out the current market Scenario with regard to mutual fund industry and also spoke of possible future growth opportunities

MrBaskharBabu – CEO, Suryoday Microfinance –He made a passionate presentation on how microfinance was the last mile connectivity where banks filed. He also emphasized on inclusion of all and penetration of banks to all.

20

Dignitaries like Mr.Sunil Shirole, MD, Yen Capital Advisory and Mr. Anil Keskar, Dean Academics, Symbiosis international University also graced the occasion with their presence. We were privileged to have bankers from ICICI bank, Yes Bank, State Bank of India, Bank of Maharashtra, and Bank of India as audience. It also gave us an opportunity to interact with our sister institutes. Bank Audit Workshop SSBM organised a two day workshop on the audit of Banks on March 27, 2012 and March 28, 2012. The workshop was conducted by Mr. Amey Sane, practicing CA based in Pune, regularly involved in the Audit of Banks. During the workshop students learned about the various stages of bank audit, internal controls and prudential norms as specified by RBI with respect to Audit of Banks. Students also gained a keen insight into a Bank’s Balance Sheet. Furthermore, to give students real-time exposure to Bank Audit, Mr. Sane selected seven students to be a part of his team for Audit of various Banks in and around Pune area in the first two weeks of April 2012. Mint Conclave On February23, 2012 SSBM partnered a Clarity through Debate event in Mumbai on the subject “Is Microfinance Industry critical for financial inclusion in India?” organized by Mint. Microfinance institutions (MFIs) have been struggling for recovery after a crisis triggered by an Andhra Pradesh law in October 2010 that reined in MFIs, which lend small sums of money to poor borrowers; the state is India’s biggest market for such loans. Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Deputy Governor, Mr.K.C. Chakrabarty; Director of the Centre for Advanced Financial Research and Learning Mrs.Usha Thorat; Basix group Chairman, Mr.Vijay Mahajan; Chairman and Managing Director of Small Industries Development Bank of India Mr. Sushil Muhnot; International Finance Corporation’s regional manager, financial markets and private equity, Mr.ManojPrashar; and Bandhan Financial Services Pvt. Ltd Chairman, Mr.ChandraShekharGhosh were the panelists in the discussion. Mint’s Deputy Managing Editor, Mr.TamalBandyopadhyay moderated the discussion Mint Furthering its initiatives. According to the participants, responsible lending is the key for the sector’s revival. Notable points from the discussion were that India with a population of 1.2 billion and over 300 million of them under poverty line, needs to encourage any emerging alternative for financial inclusion. For the past 7-8 years, a borrower has been dependent on MFIs. If they don’t give him money he will have to go back to the moneylenders. MFIs have been able to connect the last mile very effectively where the traditional delivery channels have not been able to. The discussion concluded that MFIs have indeed emerged as a cost effective solution to reach the bottom of the pyramid, however, the real issue is that the banking system in the country needs to scale up and grow to become pan-India.

Mentoring Programs At SSBM, education does not cease with academics, the all-round growth and development of every student is considered to be an integral part of the entire process. The mentoring program has been put in place to foster an open learning environment conducive to the growth of every student where the students work hand in hand to imbibe and absorb as much knowledge as possible in a short duration of time. Synopia The annual cultural fest of SSBM is a colourful extravaganza where students get a chance to showcase and hone their innate talents and let their hair down. From singing to dancing to poetry to stand up comedy to plays– all types of art forms find their fair share on the stage. Aarambh Arambh is a welcome cultural extravaganza organized every year for the institutes located on Lavale Campus. This year it was held on 16th July 2012 where the students of SSBM gave a dance, band & fashion show theme performance. Sangram In continuation with its tradition this year the sports Committee had organized the two day intra institute sports event called Sangram in February 2012. Community Outreach SSBM believes in a holistic development of students and this includes developing a healthy respect for the community and contributing to it in whichever way possible. The minor project is an extension of this ideal which involves visiting villages in and around Lavale and collection of data as regards the level of financial awareness in the same. The project also entails analysis of the data collected and coming up with findings and recommendations which would improve the awareness. The in-house student committee, Committee for Social Responsibility, spearheads the project and is responsible for spreading financial awareness and implementing the recommendations arising from the same. ''Manavya'' is another annual event conducted on World AIDS day, where SSBM students visit and spread cheer in orphanages with HIV afflicted children. The interview process involves testing the candidates for their focus, aptitude, attitude, ability to work well both individually and as a part of a team. All this ensures intake of serious, focussed and determined students who are team players and keen on pursuing banking and finance as their careers. The students are judged on several parameters post the written test which include Group Exercise: - Students are given a particular task and are judged on parameters like team work etc. Group Discussion: - This helps in judging the students on communication skills and ability to articulate their ideas Individual activity: - This component helps in bringing out the creative and innovative aspects of the applicants. Personal interview: - This helps in judging the overall personality of the candidate having a special focus towards the BFSI sector. The panelist include highly qualified academicians and industry experts having experience in the BFSI sector of 20 to 30 years. Leadership Potential Applicants who have consistently demonstrated an ability to take up initiatives in their work or academic life definitely gain an edge over their peers. This is assessed through recommendations or references included in the application. Final Placements Batch 2010-12 SSBM has on campus placement process conducted annually, which is supervised by the Faculty Placement Coordinator and coordinated by the Placement Committee. The placement process begins with Pre- Placement Talks by companies, usually scheduled between the months of October, November and December followed by the Final Placement Process. Final Placement Batch 2010-12 The first batch of Symbiosis School of Banking Management comprising of 59 students graduated in 2012. The batch was offered various job profiles by 11 companies from diverse sectors ranging from Private Banks, Public Banks, Consultancies & NBFC’s. Final Placement The final placement process is conducted over an extended period of time beginning in the second week of November. This gives the companies ample time for customized selection processes that may be required, given the lateral hiring process. Final placement interview gives the company and the student an opportunity to discuss the role in detail and make the right choice. The final placement process thus marks the culmination of the annual placement process wherein candidates, irrespective of the nature of their prior work experience, participate. All essential arrangements including logistics and infrastructural support required for the selection process of various companies would be provided by the institute. The company can make an offer to the student after the final interview. The offer should include details of role, location, remuneration, and other relevant terms and conditions required by the candidate to make a decision. The acceptance of offer is governed by placement rules of the institute. At the end of the process the decision of the student is conveyed to the company by the Placement Assistance Committee. With this process, our intent is to make the placement process conducive to both the companies and the students. We will also consider any additional company specific requirements over and above the outlined recruitment process.
