Dear Ladies, What a good weather we have this year !! hope you are enjoying it, be outside with family, having fun in park‌ These weather won't last very long, so enjoy !! SSA exist because of you, so please make the effort when you say that you will come to a paid activity, to come, it cost money from our budget and penalize the other activities. So I would like you to consider this very seriously. We had a very good turn out at our first coffee morning at Al Fanar in Festival City, a traditional Emirati cuisine. We've welcomed some newcomers as well, hope they are settling fine in their new life.

Thank you Nicola Hill for sharing ! Tucked away in a quiet corner of JLT a small group of us met for a taster session at SMART FITENESS. First impressions of the gym were… modern, friendly, clean and well equipt. We were warmly greeted by the smiling faces of our enthusiastic trainers Jack (Bachelor of the Year 2013) and Anna. After a brief chat to establish our current level of fitness, we set off outside. Warm up was a jog around the lake which soon turned into a sprint! No time to rest we were straight into the Boxing. Standing in pairs, one with the boxing gloves, the other with protection, we proceeded to punch each other very hard… at least until our arms could punch no more! Between ‘bouts’ we did a number of short sprints (giving our arms a brief rest!) There was great team spirit throughout – I had no idea how much fun boxing was.

Another quick gulp of water and we were inside for some Yoga. Most of us were struggling to move by now, let alone hold a Yoga pose! It was fun to try, but being very inflexible it was not for me.

Our taster session ended with a fun quiz and chat with Alison the Nutritionist while sampling her delicious homemade ‘healthy’ chocolate cake. Thank you Arunaa & Hanh for organising this fantastic taster session, it was a huge benefit to me - I found out exactly how unfit I was and am now happily doing something about it! ~ Nicola Hill

Time for a quick gulp of water and we were straight into the aerobics session. I feel exhausted just thinking about this one! It might have been the last workout of the morning but it took all the energy we had. We worked through a sequence of burpees, star jumps, squats, lunges etc. in repetition until we were all completely exhausted.

Year End Party 2013 YEP Prize Sponsors

YEP! The lights of the city. The smells of the ocean. Lays, soaps, henna, photos, music, food and a very entertaining surprise.

Fun Games! Motivational

Travelled 447 KM around Dubai.

Secluded on an island to ourselves.; surrounded by the lights of the city and the smells of the ocean. An entry, treated with a lay of flowers and beautifully scented camel soap. In a far corner was a funtastic photo booth! Near the entrance there was a henna artist. There was a premier video to recap 2013, share pictures taken by our local SSA photographers, and a special video dedicated to Laurence from the board. And how can we not mention the surprise by the board of a Broadway worthy dance to “Summer Nights” from the movie Grease.

Newcomers and veteran, together, enjoyed a traditional Emirati breakfast at Al Fanar. Outside there were classic Arabic booths and some figurines hard at work. Inside there was beautiful architecture around a tree. There were tasty breads, pancakes, and eggs to choose to eat. Arabic tea, coffee, or fresh squeezed juices offered to drink. Amongst all the chitchat we welcomed a few newcomers .

Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding In the COLD room

Jones the Grocer Our first event back from the holiday’s we visited Jones the Grocer; located off of Sheikh Zayed Road. These guys are not shy about telling us about their favorite cheeses from around the world! A long informative discussion describing the different kinds of cheeses, what the best pairings are, how they are made and how they are kept COLD! We sampled 6 cheeses: Roquefort, Manchego, Gruyere, Stilton, Munster, and Brie. Each having their own distinct flavor! They even shared some secrets on how to store the cheese as well as the best pairings. Cheese tasting!

~Compliments and Thanks to Leslie Reyes for pictures and the description

.

For Non-Muslims, I recommend it a must do. You end up learning so much about a different culture in such a short time. While Dubai sells itself for its tallest, biggest, most expensive, largest and other superlatives, there is still a traditional culture there and if you want to learn anything about it, this is the place. The informative and fun-laden presentations while enjoying a traditional emirati breakfast provide great insights into the ways of life and thought of pre "World Hub" Dubai. The entire neighborhood is about all that is left of "old" Dubai, with its adobe architecture, so well worth spending some time in. ~ Leslie Reyes

Happy Valentines from Nanees’s House!

“...Reham Afify for making that awesome cake. “ ~ Nanees

“Thank you Patri for sharing your cookie recipe with us “ ~ Nanees

Fun morning ladies! Thanks Nanees for being the fab hostess and creating a Valentine's "feast" and Patri for the lovely cookie demonstration! Beautiful "I love SSA" cake was so pretty! The food, the cake, the ladies in RED (except me in pink , the friendships, the heart balloons and decorations, the FOOD again, the cookies, the cake made with SSA love, a hostess with the mostess who now has a "tattoo" of SSA by burning herself on the oven and who isn't afraid to proclaim her love for SSA, a saucy Colombian pastry chef with her own cooking show in the future and will probably dance salsa while cooking and who breaks out in Spanish at times and an audience who sometimes ate more of the yummy cookies than paid attention...what a lovely way to spend a Wed. morning!

“..special thanks for Cindy Trigg Gibbons, Tonya Klaudi, Yulia Fredd they were my helpers “ ~ Nanees

Cauliflower: Bring the water or vegetable broth to a boil in a large pot. Add the cauliflower and cook, covered, for 7-10 minutes or until cauliflower is fork tender. Do not drain. Puree: Use a slotted spoon to transfer the cauliflower pieces to the blender. Add 1 cup vegetable broth or cooking liquid, sauteed garlic/butter, salt, pepper, and milk. A follow up book to The Bastard of Istanbul. “The 13th century was a turbulent period in Anatolia, rife with religious clashes, political disputes and endless power struggles. In the West, the Crusaders, on their way to Jerusalem, occupied and sacked Constantinople, leading to the partition of the Byzantine Empire. In the East, highly disciplined Mongol armies swiftly expanded under the military genius of Genghis Khan. In between, different Turkish tribes fought among themselves while the Byzantines tried to recover their lost land, wealth and power. It was a time of unprecedented chaos when Christians fought Christians, Christians fought Muslims, and Muslims fought Muslims. Everywhere one turned, there was hostility and anguish, and an intense fear of what might happen next. In the midst of this chaos lived a distinguished Islamic scholar, known as Jalal Al-Din Rumi. Nicknamed Mawlana -Our Masterby many, he had thousands of disciples and admirers from all over the region and beyond, and was regarded as a beacon to all Muslims. “
