Volume XXVI No. 3 January-February, 2011

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Dear Parents: We have had a very exciting and successful fall semester. Our students have once again demonstrated their willingness to help others. Our Harvest for the Hungry Food Drive surpassed last year’s efforts. By next month, I hope to announce our standing in the County and State. Our teachers have also been involved in special projects and initiatives. A special word of praise goes to Mrs. Gail Snyder, Teacher of English, for her National Board Certification. During the month of February, we will be conducting a number of parent nights designed to give information concerning registration for courses for 2011-2012 A.P. registration and the roll out of our new Signature Program which will revolve around Global Communication. With the adoption of the Signature, we now have a full compliant of programs which should meet the needs of our entire student population. Congratulations to our December students of the month: Robbie Najjar—Foreign Language, Daniel Davis—Art, Steven Behan—General Studies, Allie Martin—Physical Education/Health, Jeremy Johnson– English, Alex Watson-Social Studies, Kevin Sapp-Math, Ben Chisolm-AVID, Chris Bernard-Technology Education, and Jimmy Richardson-Science. Our continuing mission is to provide a quality education in a safe and nurturing environment. This can only happen when we have a dedicated staff and supportive and involved parents. I believe we have both. I look forward to many great accomplishments in our future. Sincerely,

William T. Myers Principal

Financial Aid Night SRHS Auditorium January 12, 2011 6:30pm The Maryland Higher Education Commission will present information on how to get financial aid for college, including how to complete the Free Application for Financial Aid (FAFSA), which is used by colleges to determine eligibility for financial assistance and scholarships. The FAFSA relies on the Federal Income Tax form for financial information. Parents are invited to bring their 2009 tax form to use for reference purposes during the presentation.

Need Help After Hours? SRHS Guidance is now offering Evening Hours. Have questions about your child’s plan for the future, the college application process or academic achievement but can’t get to the school during the workday? Counselor Amy Richard is available on the first Wednesday of every month, from 5:00-8:00pm, to meet with parents about school issues. Appointments are still available for evenings of January 5th and February 2nd. For scheduling information, please call 410-956-5600, ext 210, or email the secretary at tchaffer@aacps.org.

For more information, contact Kristin Krycia at 410-9565600, ext 214.

View Grades and Assignments with ParentConnect

“Consult A Counselor” is Now Open

Anne Arundel County Public Schools is now offering an Internet-based portal that allows parents and legal guardians a way to view student assignments, grades and attendance information. ParentConnect is accessible via the Internet from any computer, at any time.

Many students have questions they want to ask their School Counselor but don’t want to take time out of class to come down to the office. To make it easier for them to meet with us, the Guidance Department is now offering a new drop-in service called “Consult A Counselor.” The “Consult A Counselor” booth is located in the hall outside the Main Office and is open to students during all lunch sessions. Here they can seek information about a variety of subjects, such as the college application process, SAT, AP and HSA exams, graduation requirements and course options for next year. It is a great place to air a quick question of a non-private nature.

Second Semester Schedule Changes Course change requests for second semester must be submitted in writing (forms available in the Guidance Office) and will be accepted only from January 10 - February 1. We are sorry, but we cannot accept requests for teacher changes. See the G ui danc e page on www.southriverhigh.org for specific information regarding limitations on course change requests.

To register for ParentConnect, parents and legal guardians may stop by the school Guidance Office, between the hours of 7:30am and 3pm, to fill out the form and pick up access information. A driver’s license is required for identification verification.

Parent Teacher Conferences Parents are highly encouraged to contact teachers directly to discuss concerns about classroom performance. Teachers may be reached via e-mail (all teacher email

addresses can be found at www.southriverhigh.org, under the tab labeled Contacts/Teacher Directory). If you would prefer

to meet with several teachers at once, please contact your child’s counselor. Parent-Teacher conferences are held after school, Monday - Thursday, from 2:10-2:55pm.

Dear South River Parents and Community: My name is Doug Brown, the SGA advisor here at South River High School. On January 28, 2011, our “Cool School” Team, The South River Snohawks, will be participating in the Maryland State Police Polar Bear Plunge Frigid Friday event. So far, over 50 students have committed to join fellow students from throughout the state of Maryland to grin & bear it in the icy Chesapeake to benefit the athletes of Special Olympics Maryland. I know – you’re probably getting cold just thinking about it! But the cold that we will feel is temporary while the positive impact this event will have on the lives of thousands of citizens with intellectual disabilities will last a lifetime. Our team members have been working very hard to raise funds to gain awareness for Special Olympics, and it all comes down to this! We have set a team fundraising goal of $7500, and we need your help to reach it! So no, we are not asking you to take the Plunge alongside us; instead, we are asking if you will make a donation to Special Olympics Maryland on behalf of our taking the 2011 MSP Plunge. Any amount would be appreciated – it all goes to a wonderful cause, and every little bit gets us that much closer to our goal. In order to support our Plunge, please visit our team website, http://frigidfriday.kintera.org/faf/ r.asp?t=12&i=432659&g=3896828 (a direct link to this page can be found on www.southriverhigh.org) and make either a general team donation or make a donation to one of the team members. If you donate through our team web page you can use your credit or debit card. If you prefer, you can make a check payable to “South River High School” and return it to us here at school or you can make the check payable to “SOMD” and return it to me here at school, or you can mail it directly to the Special Olympics office at SOMD / 513 Progress Drive, Suite P / Linthicum, MD 21090. If you do it this way, please be sure to include my name in the memo area so that the staff will know where to credit the contribution. If you want to learn more about this wacky winter event, visit www.plungemd.com to find out all the chilly details. Think warm thoughts for our team as January 28 approaches. We will do our best to “Be the Bear” and make our supporters proud! On behalf of the South River Snohawks 2011 Polar Bear Plunge Team, THANK YOU!!!

Completer Program Paths The Maryland School Performance Program (MSPP) requires that high school students enroll in courses that prepare them for post secondary education, gainful employ-ment, or both. The school system has courses that, when taken in proper sequence, will prepare students for employ-ment. These courses are offered at the senior high schools and both Centers of Applied Technology, and are approved by the Maryland State Department of Education, Division of Career and Technology Education. The courses are avail-able through the following departments: Business Education, Cooperative Education, Family and Consumer Sciences, Technology Education, and at the Centers of Applied Tech-nology. Students must see their school counselor to enroll in the proper sequence of courses that will prepare them to be program completers, if they are not preparing for entry into the University System of Maryland College or University. Students may earn both career completer and University System of Maryland completer eligibility by enrolling in pro-grams that meet requirements for both completer programs.

Business Education - Career Program Completers Career Completer The student pursues a sequence of courses to de-velop skills in preparation for employment upon high school graduation. These courses and programs are offered at both Centers of Applied Technology or at the high schools through Business Education, Family and Consumer Sciences, and Technology Education. These career completer programs are approved by the Maryland State Department of Education, Division of Career and Adult Learning.

Tech Prep Completer Some of the career completer pathways are identified as Tech Prep pathways. The students completing these pathways pursue a sequence of study beginning in high school and continuing through at least two years of post-secondary education. Many of the Tech Prep pro-grams offer articulation agreements with local postsec-ondary institutions. These agreements allow students to earn college credit for courses taken in high school.
