Savannah State University’s (SSU) Student-Athlete Advisory Committee founded the community ser

vice event, Charity for-a-Day on November 8, 2008, in hopes of merging its student-athletes to the surrounding community of Savannah. Initially, the event included sole participation with Union Mission Inc. of Savannah, Georgia and then evolved into what it is today, including Inner City Night Shelter, America’s Second Harvest of Coastal Georgia, and the Boy’s and Girl’s Club of Beaufort, South Carolina. Currently, Charity for-a-Day invites not only student-athletes to participate in its full day of charity work, but offers open participation to any stu dents and citizens of Savannah who are seeking hours for community service.

In 2008, Charity for-a-Day carried only 5 participating members and gradually grew to an average of

10 by November 5, 2011. Also on November 5, 2011, Union Mission Inc. of Savannah, Georgia rewarded SSU’s SAAC with its annual Commitment to Participation Award for their outstanding work within the shelter. With Charity for-a-Day’s continued success, SSU now funds transportation and lunch for par ticipating members and allows for a total of 15 hours towards community service. ###
