ART INSPIRED BY MUSIC

PHOTOGRAPHS by Firstname Surname

Brian Eno Brian Eno, the highly regarded and influential musician, composer and record producer, is also a successful visual artist. He creates light artworks that slowly and seamlessly phase through combinations of attractive ‘colourscapes’, some of which are accompanied by a unique musical composition of soothing, ambient sound patterns, for which he is renowned. In executing slow changes, removing any beginning and end, and programming the pieces to be random so they perform differently each time, the viewer/listener is compelled to linger so as to experience the unique variations within the kinetic artwork. Eno’s musical career and impact have been well documented but his commitment to visual art is equally longstanding: he attended art school in the 1960s and has exhibited artworks on a worldwide stage since the 1970s – almost exclusively focusing on the medium of light supported by sound. He explains: “When I look back on what I’ve made over the intervening years, it seems I’ve been trying to slow music down so it became more like painting, and to animate paintings so that they became more like music, in the hope that the two activities would meet and fuse in the middle.” He certainly achieves this in these calm, reflective and meditative artworks.
