Through quality coaching and instruction, with a focus on safety and fun, riders will develop their skills, confidence, and love of the sport. With the support of recreation instructors and other high level coaches and riders in our community, the program will foster long term participation through ridership, leadership, volunteerism, and education.

The Squamish Youth Mountain Bike Program is a community supported and driven initiative that aims to inspire our Squamish youth to ride!

SUMMER CAMPS Riders will work closely with our instructors and other high level coaches and riders in our community to develop their mountain biking skills in a fun, supportive and safe environment. Riders will be grouped according to ability and will progress to exploring trails specific to their level of riding.

Please note this is not a ‘learn to bike’ program; basic cycling skills are required as this camp takes riding ‘off-road’. Riders must be comfortable riding a two wheeled bike, using front and back hand brakes and using gears. Each camp will incorporate education, skill development, and knowledge in the areas of basic bike maintenance and mechanics, trail building, trail etiquette, conservation, and stewardship. Riders will also be introduced to the BMX track! Please be sure to CAREFULLY read the rider/parent handbook BEFORE coming to the first day of camp. This will be emailed to you a week before hand.

“Receive the children in reverence, educate them in love, and send them forth in freedom.” – Rudolph Steiner

We believe learning is about connections. Waldorf’s hands-on approach engages students of all learning styles, allowing their natural abilities to unfold with confidence. Students connect to their creativity through the arts, support each other in learning and friendship, experience the wonder of nature, and gain the strength and skills to meet the world. Based on a nearly 100-year-old methodology, Waldorf education enjoys a long history and tradition, yet it is as fresh and relevant today as ever.

Interested in how Squamish Waldorf School ignites a lifelong love of learning? This fall, students aged 11-13 are invited to experience the many benefits of Waldorf education for three months tuition-free. We meet and exceed all BC Ministry of Education curriculum requirements, and have been providing academic excellence for students since 2002.

Intergenerational programs and activities are specifically designed for parents and/or grandparents to attend together with a child or youth. Participating in intergenerational programming helps to foster understanding, respect and engagement between different age groups and is an excellent opportunity to spend quality time together and learn from one another.

WANT A FUN, TEAM-ORIENTED, WELL-PAYING JOB? We’re offering every course you need to be a fully qualified lifeguard and swim instructor March 12 to June 30. This is a great job for: - High school and university students as pools across Canada are always looking for qualified staff. - Adults looking to get back into the work force, to change careers or possibly to eliminate their commute. You do need basic swimming abilities but the courses also help you develop your endurance and stroke technique. For more information, please contact Michelle Wilcox: mwilcox@squamish.ca

CANADIAN 24-HOUR MOVEMENT GUIDELINES FOR CHILDREN AND YOUTH: An Integration of Physical Activity, Sedentary Behaviour, and Sleep

PREAMBLE These guidelines are relevant to apparently healthy children and youth (aged 5–17 years) irrespective of gender, race, ethnicity, or the socio-economic status of the family. Children and youth are encouraged to live an active lifestyle with a daily balance of sleep, sedentary behaviours, and physical activities that supports their healthy development. Children and youth should practice healthy sleep hygiene (habits and practices that are conducive to sleeping well), limit sedentary behaviours (especially screen time), and participate in a range of physical activities in a variety of environments (e.g., home/school/community; indoors/outdoors; land/water; summer/winter) and contexts (e.g., play, recreation, sport, active transportation, hobbies, and chores). For those not currently meeting these 24-hour movement guidelines, a progressive adjustment toward them is recommended. Following these guidelines is associated with better body composition, cardiorespiratory and musculoskeletal fitness, academic achievement and cognition, emotional regulation, pro-social behaviours, cardiovascular and metabolic health, and overall quality of life. The benefits of following these guidelines far exceed potential risks. These guidelines may be appropriate for children and youth with a disability or medical condition; however, a health professional should be consulted for additional guidance. The specific guidelines and more details on the background research informing them, their interpretation, guidance on how to achieve them, and recommendations for research and surveillance are available at www.csep.ca/guidelines.

GUIDELINES For optimal health benefits, children and youth (aged 5–17 years) should achieve high levels of physical activity, low levels of sedentary behaviour, and sufficient sleep each day. A healthy 24 hours includes:

SWEAT

STEP

SLEEP

SIT

MODERATE TO VIGOROUS PHYSICAL ACTIVITY

LIGHT PHYSICAL ACTIVITY

SLEEP

SEDENTARY BEHAVIOUR

Several hours of a variety of structured and unstructured light physical activities;

Uninterrupted 9 to 11 hours of sleep per night for those aged 5–13 years and 8 to 10 hours per night for those aged 14–17 years, with consistent bed and wake-up times;

No more than 2 hours per day of recreational screen time;

An accumulation of at least 60 minutes per day of moderate to vigorous physical activity involving a variety of aerobic activities. Vigorous physical activities, and muscle and bone strengthening activities should each be incorporated at least 3 days per week;

Limited sitting for extended periods.

Preserving sufficient sleep, trading indoor time for outdoor time, and replacing sedentary behaviours and light physical activity with additional moderate to vigorous physical activity can provide greater health benefits.
