We hope you enjoy your new prize-packed copy of your favourite comping magazine. Feel free to drop me a line at Kelly.Dudley@oxonpress.com – I am always pleased to hear from you! Now I recommend you head straight to the next page for Hold the Press – our new section for competitions that are closing very soon but have prizes that are too good to miss.

Listings Key * Q W R T E

You could win £250 just for opening the envelope with this magazine in it! Is it your lucky number this month? Turn to page 23 to check this month’s lucky number against the one printed on your envelope, and if it matches, you can claim a £250 cheque! What could be easier? Pit your wits against our puzzles for the chance to win an iPod, shopping vouchers or even a hamper of comping supplies to keep you stocked up. We also want to hear more from you – and there’s a prize in it for you as well! Drop us a line to tell us what you think about the new magazine (or what you’ve won, or comping in general) and if we use it on our letters page, we’ll send you 100 comping postcards to keep you winning. Alternatively, if you’ve had a big win, why not share it with our readers to keep them motivated? We’ll pay you £150 as an added bonus!

As we are unable to print all the terms and conditions of every competition we list in full detail, we strongly recommend that you check the original rules of entry if you have any queries. We research the answers to competitions to the best of our ability and offer our advice so that you can enter quickly and easily. We cannot guarantee these are definitive answers.

Perhaps you’re a budding photographer, or have a way with words? Now you can put those skills to use to help you win even more in 2009. Not sure where to start? Our tie-breaker expert, Martin Dove, will guide you through the tricky (but very rewarding!) world of skilled comping. When we’re not scouring the country to find the best competitions and prize draws for you to enter, we also find time to put a few together ourselves. We’re going to be giving away a whopping £900 worth of cash and prizes in every issue.

Simply Prizes is supported by the Institute of Sales Promotion (ISP), the professional body dedicated to promoting good practice across all competitions and promotions.

All competitions in SP are only one entry per person and open to residents of the UK aged 18 or over, unless we state otherwise in the terms and conditions.

You’re holding in your hands the first issue of the new and improved Simply Prizes magazine. There’s more competitions and prizes, more expert advice and more ways to get the most out of your favourite hobby! In this issue alone we have over 200 brand new competitions for you to enter with prizes beyond your wildest dreams – cars, cash, holidays and more! And they’re not just prize draws. We’ve also tracked down the best skill-based competitions we could find for our readers.

We research our recommendations and articles thoroughly but disclaim all liability for any inaccuracies in this publication. We may monitor and record calls to maintain and improve our service.

Dallimore Diarys: Out and about... and winning!

W

F readers will already know how much I love going to events at the NEC Birmingham, such as the BBC Good Food

Show in November, and I always enter all the comps I can find on the various stands. Well, just after the 2008 GFS I received a letter to say I’d won a prize from the La Cafetiere stand – and my hot chocolate pot plus cups and saucers AND a kettle all arrived that same afternoon. Brilliant! In December I was at the BBC Clothes Show Live but didn’t find many comps, although there have been more there in previous years. But 2008 did go out with a bang for me prize-wise! Nine days before Christmas I had a call on my mobile to say that I’d won a Samsung 32 inch LCD TV, one of the daily prizes from the Morrison’s Christmas text comp! The TV arrived that week and was set up well before Christmas for us to enjoy the festive season programmes in style. So, to the comper who recently told me that she has only ever won small prizes in text comps and wonders if she will ever win anything bigger, I must say “Carry On Texting” – it could be YOUR turn

next, for a big win by text. I received a letter the very same day as the winning telephone call, saying that I’d won two places for the New Year’s Eve Black & White Gala Dinner at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole, with overnight accommodation in an Executive Room and brunch the next morning! Wow! New Year’s Eve was celebrated as we’d never celebrated it before – the best thing being that we didn’t have to travel home afterwards, we just took the lift to our Executive Room. This super prize was won from a comp in a local “What’s On” magazine. I know I’ve said this before, but it really is worth entering comps in your local newspapers and mags. Prizes of tickets to local events may not be of interest to people who live out of the area so there may not be many entries. Giving YOU a far better chance of winning. My first win for 2009 was two tickets to the Autosport Show at the NEC B’ham and I’ll be telling you more about that next month, as well as my prize trip to see comedian Jimmy Carr in concert. Meanwhile, do look out for me and say

“hello” if you are going to the National Boat, Caravan & Outdoor Show at the NEC B’ham on Wednesday 18 February or the Destinations Holiday & Travel Show at the NEC B’ham on Friday 27 February. I am probably quite easy to spot with my shopping trolley – and bag of sticky name & address labels round my neck – stopping at each stand where there is a comp – and Kelly may be with me. If you haven’t yet won tickets for “Destinations”, go to http://www.trailfinders.com/trailfindermagazine and order the Trailfinder magazine. Mine arrived by post within two days and unexpectedly included a free double ticket to the Destinations Holiday & Travel Show. Be quick and you may be lucky enough to get one too. Good Luck with your entries this month – and do send me your comping questions via post or email, to be answered on this page.

Valerie

WRITE TO WIN

Write to win…

TURN YOUR WORDS INTO WINS!

Got something to get off your chest? It could win you some fabulous prizes, courtesy of your favourite magazines.

A

lmost every magazine on the news-stand has a letters page, inviting you to give your thoughts on their latest issue. Surprisingly, very few readers ever take them up on this offer, meaning that the “star letter” prizes could be yours for the taking. And despite the low entry levels, these prizes aren’t to be sniffed at – they include mobile phones, posh toiletries, holidays and more! So why not put pen to paper and see if you could be their next winner? We have listed some of the best magazines for published letters, along with their prizes. This is by no means a definitive list, and we’ll be adding to it in following issues. Good luck!

ESSENTIALS MAGAZINE Essentials offer £30 for every letter they publish. They’re after your tips, girlie stories and favourite bits of their magazine. Write to All About You, Essentials, Blue Fin Building, 110 Southwark Street, London SE1 1OU or email: essentials_feedback@ipcmedia.com.

PRIMA Prima offer a whopping £200 if you tell them your story, as well as a year’s subscription to the magazine. Two runner’s up also receive a year’s subscription. They are looking for moving and emotional stories about you and yours. For information on how to submit, visit www.allaboutyou.com/prima

ZEST The health, fitness and beauty magazine want to hear about your experiences of diet, exercise and holistic therapies. In return, they give away some amazing beauty products. Email to zest.mail@natmags.co.uk or write to: Zest Letters, The National Magazine Company, 72 Broadwick Street, London, W1F 9EP.

February 2009 | Simply Prizes

DELICIOUS MAGAZINE There are some wonderful foodie prizes up for grabs to those who write in, including cases of wine and kitchen gadgets. Send your favourite recipes or comments on the magazine to: Delicious Magazine, 20 Upper Ground, London, SE1 9PD, or e-mail: readers@deliciousmagazine.co.uk.

OLIVE MAGAZINE Another one for the gourmet buffs – their monthly star letter winner on their Over To You page can look forward to some high tech kitchen appliances. Share your ideas on the magazines, rants and favourite recipes. Write to: Olive, BBC Worldwide, Woodlands, 80 Wood Lane, London, W12 0TT or e-mail: oliveletters@bbc.com.

SOMERFIELD MAGAZINE Each month, readers’ letters are rewarded with vouchers to spend in the store. You can get £20 for each of the following: Star Letter, Reader Recipe (using Somerfield ingredients), Reader of the Month, Pet of the Month and Baby of the Month. Send your details to: Somerfield Magazine, The Mill House, Redcliff Backs, Bristol, BS1 6LY or e-mail: letters@psprarepublishing.co.uk

TIPS: 1) Know your magazine – it’s worth getting hold of the latest copy of an issue before writing in. It’ll give you a feel for the type of issues they are talking about presently. 2) Write in as early as possible! Magazine publishers are often working a couple of issues ahead of the one that you are reading, so the sooner you write, the more contemporary your letter will appear. 3) This is another great time to use your talents. Specialist magazines for particular hobbies will appreciate letters that show knowledge of the subject. Chances are you’ll have a few of these mags lying around anyway, why not benefit? 4) Be original. Try not to write a boring diatribe about how great their magazine is... but always be complimentary! 5) It may be common sense, but any scathing reports about how bad their mag is, or how great a competitor is will be going straight to the Recycle Bin! 6) Try not to send original photos by post – you are very likely not to receive them back. 7) Check if you’ve won! The promoter might need some “reminding” to send you your prize. Don’t forget to include your contact details with your letter.

CREATIVE COMPS

Creative comps… CREATIVE COMPS

Greetings!

All-new to Simply Prizes, we’ll help you to flex your creative muscles to win even more prizes! In this section, you’ll find photo competitions, tie-breakers, story competitions and more. Let your talents win you even more!

I received an e-mail from Ken G this month asking why there are so few tiebreaker competitions around these days. He writes… “I enjoy reading your column on tie-breakers. However, why are there so very few tiebreaker competitions? As far as I’m concerned a competition is only a competition if there’s an element of skill involve. I’m simply not interested in entering the other competitions where it’s purely down to luck.” Yes, Ken, you are exactly right, the tiebreaker is now a rare beast, as free prize draws, instant wins, and Internet comping have taken over. You simply enter, and you have exactly the same chance of everyone else. What we must remember is that when a company runs a competition, all they are trying to do is to increase their market share. With tie-breakers, the company has to pay a handling house to sort the entries, and a judging panel to find a winner. Small wonder then that they prefer an instant win comp where the winners simply write in to claim their prize. To make up for the lack of comps with a written tiebreaker, I have started entering short story competitions. I prefer really short stories, with a limit of one thousand words. On many occasions I can write a five hundred-word story much quicker than I used to write twelve word slogans! There are plenty of creative options out there – why not try photography, poetry, painting or recipe competitions? Although the traditional tiebreaker comp is now scarcer that duck’s teeth, there are still plenty of ways to use up your creative energy. If you have won comps using your own creativity, please drop me a line, and don’t forget that if you want help with your tiebreakers just let me know.

WINNING STORIES

Winning stories revisited…

WINNING STORIES REVISITED This issue, we’re looking back at a lucky reader who scooped the ultimate prize. Barry Heggie and his wife Davina won a trip to Richard Branson’s private getaway, Necker Island. They told their story to Simply Prizes.

It all started with a single phone call… Little did Barry and Davina know that this phone call would take them from chilly Penrith, all the way to a private island in the Caribbean! They had entered a Daily Mirror competition to win a stay on Necker Island, owned by Richard Branson and a favourite choice among millionaires and celebrities for a private escape. A couple of months later, they found themselves jetting off to the lap of luxury on their £25,000 holiday. They arrived on the idyllic island by helicopter, and were greeted by 16 members of staff, all there to cater to their every need. “During the first night we did not sleep a wink,” says Barry, “We just couldn’t believe it. We were back up by 6:30am for a stroll around the island’s white sandy beaches. The sea was azure and 22

had washed up the biggest, most beautiful shells you have ever seen. It was truly paradise.” Although the island is closed to the public, the couple discovered that they certainly weren’t alone on the island... “Chilling out on the first day after a stroll, we looked up to see Sir Richard Branson appear from behind a tree and walk right towards us! He greeted us with a huge grin, shook our hands and congratulated us on our win!” “From then on we dined with Richard and his family most evenings, and couldn’t have been made to feel more welcome. Everything you read about Richard Branson is true – he is a lovely man and could not have been more hospitable to a couple of prize winners from Penrith!”

Barry and Davina soon became accustomed to island life. The day began with breakfast to order, followed by the polite request: What would you like to do today? Island hopping, watersports, exploring or just lazing on one of the many sandy white beaches – any request made was met by the staff in seconds, who were only too happy to help. Richard Branson even offered them his own personal speed boat for a trip out if they fancied it. And as a nonswimmer, Barry was offered a few lessons by the staff, in case he went overboard! The couple realised that this was an experience they would never have gotten without the help of comping, so they savoured every moment they had in this beautiful paradise. “We took in every sight possible whilst

on Necker, including day trips and helicopter flights to the surrounding islands, but nothing was as special as just being on Necker Island watching the sun set over the sea.” Now the couple are back home in Penrith, they can’t stop telling people about their experience of the high life! “I tell everyone I meet about this experience and some of them don’t believe me until I show them photos! Davina and I will remember this for the rest of our lives – we just entered a phone competition with The Daily Mirror for 60p! Then we found ourselves on a holiday worth £25,000!” “To be honest, even if someone had offered me £1 million in cash to buy the vacation from me, I would not trade the experience we had for the world. It will live with us forever.”

Barry and Davina are still comping, although they’ve decided to lay off the holiday competitions for a while... this one will be hard to beat!

Check this number against the lucky number printed on the front of your envelope. If the numbers match then call the competition hotline now: 01794 527403 to claim your £250 prize.

HAVE YOU WON BIG? WE’LL PAY £150 FOR YOUR STORY! Every win is a good one, even the little ones, but we’re looking for readers who have scooped a life-changing prize. It could be an amazing holiday, a large sum of cash or even a car! You could find yourself on these pages of the next issue, telling the comping world about your stroke of luck. We’re also looking for readers who had a great year of wins in 2008, and would like to share their roll call with the world. YOUR LETTERS

Your letters…

WE WANT TO HEAR WHAT OUR READERS ARE WINNING! Whether you’re rolling in prizes or persevering through a lean patch, we want to hear about it. Every letter published will receive 100 postcards to keep them comping through 2009. Either drop me an e-mail at

Kelly.dudley@oxonpress.com or write to Simply Prizes Letters, Oxfordshire Press, Unit 1D, Cherwell Business Village, Southam Road, Banbury, Oxfordshire, OX16 2SD. We love to see your photos, but please don’t send any originals as we cannot guarantee they will be returned.

DEAR SIMPLY PRIZES, After a bit of a quiet patch when it came to wins, I got a call just before Christmas to say I’d won a pair of tickets at Gloucester Sports Club Black Tie Dinner, worth £63 each! I was gobsmacked! We’d both be treated to a four-course meal, finished off with a guest chat from Austin Healey. Unfortunately, he was too busy twirling around with Erin on Strictly Come Dancing to make it – his loss, as he was knocked out the next week anyway!

Instead, they sent the lovely Matt Dawson. He was an excellent speaker, both on the subject of rugby and Strictly Come Dancing. We managed to get some signed books on rugby for our friends and take a few pics! While we were enjoying the festivities, an anonymous man popped over to my friend and I and gave us over £100 of tickets for the raffle on the night – a win in itself! We decided to split them, and my friend won the star prize of a weekend at the posh hotel where the dinner was staged! Talk about luck! Not many wins in 2008, so as dancers this was a great chance to dress up and cuddle up to a great sportsman – who is not a bad dancer himself! Let’s hope 2009 will be a competition-winprosperous New Year. Charmaine Coppock, via e-mail

ED: Sounds like a wonderful evening! That’s one of the great things about comping – it gives you access to experiences that you might not otherwise get. Have you had a brush with the stars courtesy of your hobby? If so, we want to hear about it!

DEAR SIMPLY PRIZES, I’ve been entering competitions for what seems like years now with only a few small but welcome wins to my name. Last summer I made a decision to really concentrate on comping and became a member of the NCA. Still no major wins but a steady stream of small prizes came my way. Then came the new year and what a start. In the last week I won a Phil Vickery cookbook, then came a pair of tickets to a craft show at Sandown Park, followed by a knock on the door by a delivery man with a Ainsley Harriot Professional Juicer – 2nd prize in the Morrisons Winter Warmer competition. Then, to top it all, yesterday I received a letter from Woman magazine saying I’d won a new washing machine and 2 bottles of Ariel Excel Gel. If anyone out there is thinking of giving up – DON’T. I can’t believe my luck this week but it definitely shows that if you persevere the prizes are out there for the winning. I’m full of enthusiasm and my mum has started to catch the bug too. Roz Perry, St Austell

ED: Wow Roz, what a brilliant start to the year! A good reminder to us all that no lean spell lasts forever, and that rather than moping, we should use the time to enter even more. Keep us posted on what comes next!

DEAR SIMPLY PRIZES, I have been having a lean spell, but since Christmas it looks like the luck is changing – yippee! First, I got four numbers on the national lottery, closely followed by some posh make-up from Fabulous magazine.

YOUR LETTERS

Wednesday... and here it comes... I got a phone call from The Daily Mail – I won £500 to shop with on a designer website. Brilliant! And when I got home, I had a message to say I had won a day at a cookery school worth £195! I wonder what could be next? Carol Taylor, Harlow

ED: All the ladies in the office are very jealous of £500 to spend on designer clothing, especially in the current financial climate. I hope you get some lovely treats and that this is the first win of many for you this year!

DEAR SIMPLY PRIZES, After a lean spell, December brought me a storage box from Period Living, a Girls Aloud T shirt and three months’ membership to a local ladies-only gym, which I haven’t yet taken up having had flu and sickness virus over Christmas and New Year! Now I’ve got my appetite back, I really must do something about my wobbly bits! So far, 2009 has brought me a £40 voucher to use at a picture/framing shop, Sunday lunch and a bottle of wine for two at a local pub, and a £100 Wallis voucher from Prima. A good start, and while I was recovering from flu I entered loads of comps from my sickbed! Just waiting for the prizes to arrive! Think positive is my motto!

DEAR SIMPLY PRIZES,

WINNING READERS

I have had a great few weeks of winning lately! Just before Christmas, I was one of ten finalists featured in the Daily Mirror/Ariel Innovations competition. My photo was in the paper (I have sent a copy so everyone can see!) and you could vote for me to win a £5,000 home makeover. I ended up with a runner up prize of a new Hotpoint washing machine.

January 2009 winners

Next I won a pair of football boots signed by Liverpool legend Kenny Dalgleish, closely followed by a year’s subscription to DFC comic for my son. These were all caption competitions – it’s definitely worth the time and effort and good fun thinking up winning entries. Almost forgot – I also won a £50 voucher for online sport shop kitbag.com. It’s really inspired me to keep comping.
