Dear St. Pius X Families,
One of the best parts of working in education is anticipating a new school year. Summer provides us with time to reflect on areas that we would like to improve and to envision the culture we wish to cultivate. As we welcomed our faculty back to campus, I shared some wisdom from Blessed Basil Moreau: “While we prepare useful citizens for society, we shall likewise do our utmost to prepare them for heaven.” His directive underscores the unique mission of Catholic schools. Our theme for the year, “Be Uncommon,” serves as a reminder of the important work we do as Catholic educators.
This year, we welcomed 264 new students to our campus—a talented and diverse group joining us from over 40 middle schools and 55 zip codes. Among them are five sets of twins, 27 children of alumni, and, notably, one black belt! I am eager to introduce them to our culture and accompany them as they learn, grow, and develop their God-given talents.
In May, we celebrated our 66th graduation ceremony at the Georgia State Convocation Center. It was a beautiful morning as we graduated 244 seniors, including our 14,000th alumnus. The Class of 2024 was a remarkable group. They achieved a collective GPA of 92.3. They completed over 1,600 college applications and will be attending 80 different colleges. While the University of Georgia and Georgia Tech are their top in-state destinations, our graduates are also heading to schools across the country, including Boston College, George Washington University, Georgetown, the New York Film Academy, the US Naval Academy, the University of Vermont, and the University of Virginia. The farthest destination is the University of Southern California. We encouraged the Class of 2024 to remain active in the Church, live with integrity, and pursue their professional dreams, while always remembering that they have a home on Johnson Road.
Speaking of our 14,000 alumni, we invite you to join us for Homecoming weekend from September 27-29. On Friday night, the pregame festivities will kick off with a pregame barbecue on Messner Plaza, followed by the alumni band and choir, who will perform the National Anthem with our current band members.
St. Pius X Leadership
At 7:30 p.m., our football team plays North Springs, and during the first half, our alumni cheerleaders and drill team will have the opportunity to join current varsity cheerleaders on the field to lead two cheers. There is an inaugural pickleball tournament on Saturday along with our annual alumni service project. Finally, we will celebrate a Mass of Remembrance for deceased members of our St. Pius X community on Sunday morning in the Young Center with Bishop Tran.
I also invite you to support our ambitious Annual Fund this year. We are striving to raise $1,250,000 in an effort to keep tuition affordable while funding key areas like salaries for our talented faculty, the creation of a new STEM lab classroom, and our fulltime Chaplain Father Robbie Cotta. New this year, we introduced increased leadership giving levels and a special event for donors at the $5,000 and above level.
In closing, I want to express my gratitude to each of you for staying engaged with our school community. Just as St. Pius X thrives because of those who came before us, we are likewise the stewards of future generations. We are entrusted with the responsibility to care for our school and ensure it is in as good, if not better, condition for the next generation. It is an honor to serve as the President of this faith-filled community, and I am excited to see what God has in store for us this year.
Domini Sumus,
Aaron Parr '06 President
Graduation 2024
Congratulations to the Class of 2024, the 66th graduating class of St. Pius X! The class enjoyed several special events leading up to graduation day. On May 3, the Honors Assembly recognized students for their academic achievements. On May 16, the class of 244 gathered for the Baccalaureate Mass at the Holy Vietnamese Martyrs Catholic Church in Norcross.
On May 18, the graduation ceremony was held at the Georgia State Convocation Center for the first time. President Aaron Parr warmly greeted the class and their families. Graduates Vincent Casal, Maggie Duncan, Molly Pitra, and Lauren Smith performed "God Bless America." Principal Edye Simpson introduced Salutatorian Molly Pitra, saying, “Molly is an excellent example of what we at St. Pius X hope for all of our graduates: she possesses intellectual diligence, academic excellence, and artistic talent, and she demonstrates her faith through service to others.”
Molly distinguished herself as a National Merit Scholar and was involved in multiple honor societies including National Honor Society, English Honor Society, French Honor Society, and Tri-M Honor Society. Molly was also recognized with the Harvard Book Award for her academic prowess. Her leadership extended to roles such as Lion Leader, Pride Leader, and member of the President’s Panel. She showcased her passion for theater through 14 performances with the Pius Players and Thespian Society. Molly was the Georgia State Champion for the Poetry Out Loud Competition and was ranked 24th in the entire nation for Poetry Out Loud. Her classmates voted her as the "Most Intelligent" senior girl.

“The thing is, most high schoolers are jugglers. Some of us are juggling bowling pins while others may be tossing around plates or knives; nonetheless, everyone is juggling something. That’s what it means to be a high schooler. And lucky us, we got COVID added to our juggling props.
- Molly Pitra, Salutatorian
In her address, Molly reflected on the challenges of starting high school during the COVID-19 pandemic, navigating hybrid schedules and stringent safety protocols. She likened the high school journey to juggling, recognizing the fragility of some challenges compared to others. She remarked, “We have been high schoolers for about 1,275 days. That’s 1,275 days of juggling. That’s a crazy feat and one that each and every one of us should be proud of. We may have dropped some pins on the way here, but we made it to graduation.”
Director of Alumni Anne Marie Ciprari ’77 presented the Distinguished Alumni Award to William “Billy” Laube ’72, highlighting his dedication to community and service. She said, “When we think of the word distinguished…we envision pomp and circumstance, grandeur, and a ceremony with fuss. To the contrary, this year’s recipient is opposite in nature and character to all of that.

He is a humble man who embodies the beloved characteristics of our fine school: Pride, Integrity, Unity, and Sacrifice.” Billy was praised for fostering unity among his classmates through initiatives like the Billy '72 and Lisa Laube Scholarship Fund and the Lieutenant Alexander Brooks Montgomery Jr. '72 USN Scholarship Fund.
Following the award, Principal Simpson introduced the valedictorian, Randy Graebner, sharing a description of Randy from teacher Ashley Marriott Curlette '02. “He is the most genuinely kind, gentle, and selfless student I have ever known. Combine these qualities with his intelligence, work ethic, and respect from the faculty and his peers, and we've got the perfect representative of St. Pius X to send out into the world!”
During his four years, Randy achieved numerous accolades: he was a National Merit Scholar, a member of the National Honor Society, and an officer in Mu Alpha Theta. He also earned the title of AP Scholar and received the University of Virginia Jefferson Book Award for academic excellence. Randy played a pivotal role in the RoboLions team as a four-year member, serving as captain and co-president, and qualifying for the state VEX competition. He was the highestscoring St. Pius X student on the American Mathematics Exam and the Kennesaw State University Mathematics Competition. Randy's leadership extended beyond academics: he served as a retreat coordinator for the St. Pius X Frasseti Brotherhood, represented his class in the Latin Club, and spearheaded the African Library Project, establishing two libraries in Africa. His fellow seniors voted him as the "Most Likely to Brighten Someone's Day."
“Sometimes the greatest lessons we learn along the way are those that we did not originally set out to accomplish. But at the end of the day, whether we make the varsity team or are accepted into that college, we are still the same people. Our value is tied to our being, not our accomplishments. Don’t let anyone or anything other than your larger purpose define you.”
- Randy Graebner, Valedictorian
In his speech, Randy shared his personal experience living with a chronic illness, the setback of COVID, and the valuable lessons he’s learned: finding goodness in hardship, not being defined by struggles, and the importance of resilience. He said, “I will miss all of you greatly, yet we will always have a common home at St. Pius. As the Latin translation for valedictorian, ‘the one who says goodbye,’ suggests, this time together is not eternal. Rather, I must say that I am eternally grateful for all that you have offered me, and now I wish all of you luck as we head off to different places in this world.”
Bishop Joel Konzen then presented the annual Archbishop’s Award, the only award given using student input. Each senior chooses one male and one female student who best exemplifies living the Catholic faith both in and out of school. The recipients were Allie Orsagh and Randy Graebner.
Before the graduates were awarded their diplomas, President Parr shared a photo of the Class of 2024 at one of two socially-distanced freshman orientations, saying, “You came into St. Pius X during the toughest year in the history of this school. Needless to say, this is not the way that you, or we, envisioned starting high school. I can’t imagine what it had to be like for all of you. This picture describes adversity. However, this class refused to let the adversity of how you started define your legacy. Your legacy is that you turned that adversity into resiliency. You brought back the special St. Pius spirit that we all know and love.”
As we bid a fond farewell to the Class of 2024, we know they will make a lasting impact on the world, as they have already left an indelible mark at St. Pius X. May God continue to guide their paths, and may they find happiness and success in all their endeavors.
2024 Distinguished Alumni
William "Billy" Laube '72
In the words of St. Pius X Director of Alumni, Anne Marie Ciprari '77
When we think of the word distinguished, we envision pomp and circumstance, grandeur, and a ceremony with fuss. To the contrary, this year’s Distinguished Alumni recipient is opposite in nature and character to all of that. He is a humble man who embodies the beloved characteristics of St. Pius X: Pride, Integrity, Unity, and Sacrifice.
William Laube, known to all as Billy, has been a loyal alumnus for over 50 years. A graduate of the great class of 1972, he was an honor roll student and MVP of the soccer team both his junior and senior year. He went on to Western Carolina University where he played varsity soccer, ultimately graduating from the University of Georgia.
Anne Marie Ciprari '77, Billy Laube '72, and Aaron Parr '06
Billy is committed to building community and keeping his classmates connected. He runs the class Facebook page and not only shares the need for prayers, but also birthdays and anniversaries. Billy recognizes his classmates for community involvement, and shares information on the loss of classmates or loved ones. Most importantly he shares what is going on at St. Pius X. The Alumni office would love to clone him for every class!
Billy and his wife, Lisa, have established a scholarship here at St. Pius X, the Billy '72 and Lisa Laube Scholarship Fund, as he is committed to making a Pius education accessible to others. This scholarship is awarded to students in need, with preference to soccer players, who exhibit leadership and team-building skills both on and off the field.
Billy also led the establishment of the Lieutenant Brooks Montgomery scholarship fund in honor of his classmate who died while serving our country.
Every year, on Mother’s Day, he urges his classmates to support the Pam Haddad Miller Fund. Pam, a fellow 1972 classmate, was a longtime Mothers' Club volunteer who passed away in 2002.
Billy’s “connection” prowess extends to his fellow soccer teammates at Western Carolina. Even though the men’s soccer team is no longer active, Billy rallies his past teammates to raise funds to support the women’s soccer team.
Billy shared that one of his favorite quotes is from Martin Luther King Jr., and it's one that he strives to live by: Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, “What are you doing for others?”
Billy’s commitment to service coupled with his love of soccer started at a young age. He learned to play soccer at the Holy Spirit Catholic Church youth league and by the time he was 16, he was coaching soccer camps and soccer teams. In 1983, he was awarded the President’s Award for outstanding service and management of a team. He was also awarded the YMCA long service award for volunteering as a soccer coach.
During his 25-year career with Macy’s, mostly spent in Manhattan, he led his division to win the Bag Hunger Competition twice and personally delivered the winning check to the Capuchin Monks in Midtown NYC. He has always found a way to serve, even in the corporate setting.
Members of the Class of 1972 said the following about Billy:
• "Billy is the glue that holds our class together."
• "Billy has engaged many classmates to help him keep everyone connected and to continue the sense of community for the class of 1972."
• "He truly is the perfect tither, giving of his time, talent and treasure."
• "He has an attitude of inclusiveness and strives to engage as many people as possible."
Billy's life beautifully answers the question, "What are you doing for others," and gives us all an example to emulate.

Campus Ministry
A Full-Time Chaplain Returns to St. Pius X!
Fr. Robbie Cotta Follows in the Footsteps of His Spiritual Director, Monsignor Richard Lopez
Dear St. Pius X Community,
Shortly after being ordained a priest and beginning my first assignment as parochial vicar at Immaculate Heart of Mary, I was often asked what my favorite part of priesthood was. One of the happiest surprises of my first few years of priestly ministry was being assigned to a parish with a Catholic school.
Getting to spend time with our students in the classroom, cafeteria, playground, and at our school Masses was one of the greatest joys of my first priestly assignment, a joy that I quickly learned that I shared with my spiritual director, Monsignor Richard Lopez, who still speaks so fondly of his many years serving at St. Pius X.
When I began helping out at St. Pius X in a limited capacity in the fall of 2022, I quickly realized that my love of being with our students carried over to high school. When I was officially appointed part-time chaplain here in 2023, it didn't take long for me to begin to hope that one day I'd be able to serve as the chaplain full-time.
I was overjoyed when I received my new assignment from Archbishop Hartmayer at the end of April, and when I celebrated the 8th grade graduation Mass at Immaculate Heart of Mary in May, I had a huge
smile on my face when I told our students that I'd see them on our first day of high school together in the fall.
It's already been an exciting and gracefilled time for me as I've gotten to know the SPX community, and I am very excited to begin my first year as the full-time priest chaplain with our students, faculty, staff, and the entire SPX family. Please pray for me as I begin this new role, and know that I am praying for all of you.
Domini Sumus!
Fr. Robbie Cotta St. Pius X Chaplain
Fr. Robbie Joins Miranda Contreras and Liam Byrne for a Campus Ministry "Dream Team"
Director of Campus Ministry, Miranda Contreras
Miranda Contreras hails from the great state of Texas, where she grew up playing music and sports alongside her five older siblings. A 2021 graduate of Texas A&M University with a degree in Child Professions, she was active in the university's Catholic Center, the largest in the United States. Throughout her time being immersed in the Catholic Center, she started to understand a deeper meaning to the goodness that the Lord desires to give to each and every one of us. After college, she served with Life Teen Missions as a full-time missionary for two years, where that understanding she received in college continued to grow.
Miranda believes that heaven is for all and is enthusiastic about her role in helping the community at St. Pius X walk towards the Lord. She emphasizes that holiness is within reach for everyone, regardless of who they are. Alongside Mr. Byrne and Fr. Robbie, she is excited to see what wonderful things Jesus will do for the people of St. Pius X this year. Miranda assures the Pius community of her prayers as she begins the role of Director of Campus Ministry.
Assistant Director of Campus Ministry, Liam Byrne
Liam Byrne grew up in Canton, GA with three younger sisters, and he was active in sports. He studied mechanical engineering at Georgia Tech, where he was involved in various activities, including football, Beta Theta Pi Fraternity, the GOALS Club, and the Catholic Center. After being stretched thin with a myriad of commitments and friend groups, he came to find that the joy and depth of the Catholic Center community was simply different. It was there that he grew in his faith and came to know Jesus more intimately: through His people. After graduating in December 2021, Liam spent two months doing mission work in Lima, Peru, followed by nearly a year working as a plumbing designer. He joined the St. Pius X Campus Ministry team during the 2023-2024 school year. He is excited to walk with the community here to discover a deeper understanding of our humanity and our purpose.
Ribbon Cutting & Building Blessing
On April 16, 2024, St. Pius X celebrated the completion of the St. Joan of Arc Field House and the St. Christopher Concession Stand with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and building blessing. The completion of these two buildings marked a major milestone in the Ring the Bells Capital Campaign, closing out the final phase of a five-year campaign.
The overcast morning provided the perfect backdrop for celebrating in front of the new 26,000 square foot St. Joan of Arc Field House, affectionately nicknamed “the Arc.” Bishop Joel Konzen, along with Campaign Chairs and parents of alumni, Shayla and Chip Rumely, had the honor of cutting the ribbon. After blessing the new building, attendees were invited to tour the state-of-the-art facility, complete with a fully outfitted strength and conditioning room.
Bishop Konzen also blessed the new additions at Seaver Family Sports Complex including the newly constructed press box, bleachers, concession stand, and restroom facility at Spellman Field. During his speech to the gathered crowd, Operations Director Blaise Wannemacher highlighted the significance of the field house's sign. The inscription, "St. Christopher...lead us safely," pays tribute to Dr. Christopher Clare, a cherished friend of St. Pius X who passed away in 2023 after a short illness.
Attendees included Superintendent Diane Starkovich, steering committee members, and key donors to the Capital Campaign, all of whom played a crucial role in achieving this historic achievement for St. Pius X. The Arc and the Seaver Complex additions are set to benefit the entire student body for decades to come.
Previously completed elements of the Ring the Bells Capital Campaign include security gates, a new main office entrance, and a renovated library, all of which have enhanced the student experience.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who supported the Capital Campaign, whether through generous donations or your gift of prayer. Your contributions have been instrumental in bringing this vision to life and will have a lasting impact on the St. Pius X community.
Special thanks to Building Committee volunteers Daniel Edwards and Kim Sheppard for their dedication and commitment to the design and construction process.

Patty Gilmer Childs '77 is Named the New Superintendent of Schools
We are proud that Patty Gilmer Childs '77, the new Archdiocese of Atlanta Superintendent of Schools, is a St. Pius X alumnus. She and her husband, Doug, also sent their son, Geoff Childs '02, to St. Pius X. Her Class of 1977 classmate, St. Pius X Alumni Director Anne Marie Ciprari, interviewed Patty about her role as Superintendent, her favorite memories as a St. Pius X student, and being the kindergarten teacher of St. Pius X President Aaron Parr '06.
As a fellow classmate and St. Pius X graduate, my first question has to be, what is your favorite memory of St. Pius X?
My favorite memory is not a "what" but "who." I think that has been the beauty and success of St. Pius X…the strong relationships that are built. I had wonderful teachers and made lifelong friends during my years at St. Pius X. Of course, lining the breezeway on Friday night to cheer on Coach Maloof and the team always evokes fond memories.
You have spent many years in Catholic education (12 years at St. Thomas More and 23 years at Saint Jude the Apostle Catholic School). What is it about Catholic education that keeps you motivated each year?
Sharing our faith...there is nothing more important or more beautiful. My love and commitment to Catholic education is driven by my commitment to our faith and a desire to make a meaningful impact on students’ lives. The opportunity to guide and nurture students not just academically but also spiritually is incredibly fulfilling. The sense of community, shared values, vision, and mission within a Catholic school strengthens my dedication to the students and their families. Being a part of a Catholic school community is rewarding beyond measure.
Can you share what your priorities are as the Superintendent of Schools?
I love this quote by St. Jerome: "Good, better, best. Never let it rest. ‘Til your good is better and your better is best." This quote encourages the desire to seek improvement and strive for excellence. I believe that is what we are called by mission to do each day.
How do you and your team support the schools?
Support varies as each school has their own traditions, charisms, strengths, challenges, and opportunities. The Office of Catholic Schools is a team, and we strive to support and be of service to meet the needs of each school and of the district.
St. Pius X President Aaron Parr '06 told me you were his kindergarten teacher at St. Thomas More. Do you have any fun memories or stories of that year?
Oh my…what happened in kindergarten should stay in kindergarten! Aaron was, and still is, a delightful, sincere, and authentic person. Kindergarten is obviously where all good life skills are taught. I am so proud to have had a small part in Aaron’s journey.
Will we see you on campus this year?
Absolutely! I appreciate the hard work and dedication of the faculty, staff, and administration. I want to see the students "in action" in the classroom and engaged in their activities.
Is there anything you’d like to say to the St. Pius X community? I pray that we take on the task of continuing to build upon a strong foundation and that God’s grace guide us as we continue to provide exceptional educational experiences rooted in faith.
I am proud to be a graduate of St. Pius X and the mom of a graduate. I know that St. Pius X had an incredible impact on my faith and on my desire to be an educator. Faith, academics, relationships…I am forever grateful.

2024-2025 Annual Fund
Annual Fund Leadership Donor Levels Increase: A Strategic Move for Our Future
In response to the evolving financial landscape and our commitment to maintaining excellence in all that we do, we are announcing an increase in the Annual Fund leadership donor level from $1,500 to $2,500. This strategic adjustment aligns with our new fundraising goal of $1,250,000.
Raising the leadership donor threshold is not just a numerical shift; it represents a pivotal investment in our school's future. By enhancing our Annual Fund contributions, we are better positioned to address the increasing costs associated with delivering exceptional academic programs, supporting faculty, and maintaining our new facilities. This initiative will also play a crucial role in mitigating the need for steep tuition hikes.
We deeply value the commitment of our leadership donors and believe that this change will enhance our collective impact. Your increased support is not merely a contribution; it's a significant investment in the future of our students and the continued excellence of our institution. Thank you for your unwavering dedication and for helping us shape a brighter future!
We recognize each donor’s sacrifice in supporting the Annual Fund and wish to thank our community in the following ways:
• Every donor is invited to the Annual Fun(d) Party held on Saturday, October 5 in Maloof Stadium
• *Donors who contribute $2,000 and up receive Gold Cards for free admittance to all arts events and athletic contests for the year
• *Donors who give $2,500 and up are invited to the annual Leadership Donor Dinner held in August
• *New this year, donors who contribute $5,000 and up will receive an invitation to an exclusive spring donor event with President Aaron Parr '06.

2024 Annual Fun(d) Party Annual Fund Stickers
In appreciation of your Annual Fund gift, each donor will receive two lightadhesive stickers as our gift. Attach them to your car, laptop, water bottle, or anywhere where you'd like to show your Lion Pride!
This 21+ event is our way of saying thank you for supporting the Annual Fund. Tables and chairs will be set up on the football field, and Better Than Silence will be playing your favorite tunes. Pack a cooler, socialize, and listen to the band, or go all-out "Chastain-style" with a picnic dinner and table decorations. See you there!

Locker Legacies:
Leave Your Mark on St. Pius X
St. Pius X is celebrating the successful completion of the Ring the Bells Capital Campaign with a new state-of-the-art field house, press box, concession stands, renovated library, and new main entrance. These upgrades are now enhancing the student experience daily.
Despite the completion of construction, there remains a crucial need to pay down the remaining debt associated with this ambitious project. To help us fully realize the campaign’s vision and ensure that we can direct resources where they are most needed, we invite you to support us in this final phase of the campaign.
For a donation of $1,000, you can secure a special place in the St. Joan of Arc Field House or in Alumni Hall by receiving a personalized nameplate on one of the lockers. This opportunity allows you to leave a lasting legacy while contributing to the financial success of the campaign. Your nameplate will serve as a permanent testament to your support and dedication to our school’s growth and development.
Why Your Contribution Matters:
• Legacy: A nameplate on a locker ensures your support is honored in a facility that will benefit students for years to come.
• Community Impact: Your generosity helps us conclude the campaign successfully, maintaining our commitment to excellence and sustainability.
• Debt Reduction: Your donation will assist in paying off the remaining debt, freeing up funds for student programs and other essential initiatives.

Faculty & Staff Who Are Parents of
St. Pius X Alumni & Current Students
Dear Alumni,
Our alumni network is so much more than a collection of past students; it’s a vibrant and evergrowing community of 14,000 who have shared the St. Pius X experience. One of the favorite parts of my role is witnessing the joy and nostalgia when alumni come back for a visit. Your stories, your experiences, and your accomplishments are what make our alumni community so special. We hope that you will visit campus soon. It’s your home, too!
Homecoming weekend is fast approaching and we are looking forward to welcoming all alumni back to campus. We’ve added a number of new opportunities for alumni engagement this year, so be sure to check out the Alumni Reunion Weekend website for all the details.
I’m pleased to announce we have launched a new St. Pius X Alumni Advisory Board. The Board represents the voice of all St. Pius X alumni, supports the mission of the school, and encourages alumni engagement through service, financial support, and social and networking events. We are so excited to have this great group serving our alumni community! In addition, we are seeking Class Angels, those special alumni who keep connections strong among classmates and help us keep our contact information up-to-date. Please reach out if you’d like to help.
We encourage all alumni to stay engaged through our social media channels on Instagram and Facebook. These platforms are not only a way to keep up with the latest news and events, but also to connect with fellow alumni and celebrate each other’s achievements.
New this fall, President Aaron Parr '06 will be visiting several southern college campuses to stay connected with our recent graduates through “Mass and a meal” events. Details will be shared on Instagram.
I firmly believe in the power of our alumni community's ability to make an impact here at St. Pius X. Will you please join me by Giving Like a Golden Lion and making a gift to the Annual Fund today? We have new leadership levels this year and we have added Young Alumni giving levels for those one to ten years from graduation. For those of you who haven't given regularly, would you please consider setting up a recurring gift of $10 per month? An Annual Fund gift, of any amount, is a wonderful way to express gratitude for your alma mater.
Thank you for your continued support and for being an integral part of our alumni family. I look forward to seeing you at our upcoming events and hearing more about your endeavors and successes.

Young '18 A FOCUS Missionary Shares her Story
After graduating from St. Pius X in 2018, I began college at Georgia Tech. During my first year, I met an older girl in my sorority who was a FOCUS missionary. I learned that FOCUS is a worldwide organization whose mission is to make disciples for Christ by inviting people into a relationship with Jesus in the Catholic Church. This sorority sister invited me to join her at FOCUS’s conference, SEEK, over Christmas break. I reluctantly agreed, mainly because I wanted to be her friend. In Adoration at the conference, I encountered the person of Jesus Christ for the first time. Following this encounter, I knew Jesus was asking me to make him the center of my life. I grew in relationship with Him as various FOCUS Missionaries and students taught me how to pray, about the Sacraments, Church teaching, and invited me into a community that placed relationship with God at the center.
While I was involved with FOCUS for my four undergraduate years, I never truly considered joining staff as a missionary. Thus, upon graduating, I worked as a Software Engineer at Truist. Through those nine months working, the Lord continued to pursue me and remove obstacles that had prevented me from being a missionary.
Over the course of the year, I became aware of my deep desire to be on mission. Specifically, the desire to do so with FOCUS, the ministry which introduced me to Jesus and formed me so well.
As a FOCUS Missionary, I serve at The University of Texas at Austin on a team of six missionaries. I primarily do Sorority outreach, so my role consists of reaching out to sorority girls, growing in friendship with them, helping them come to know Jesus Christ, and teaching them how to lead others. It is the greatest joy of my life to get to share the Gospel with college students.

Lily Rose Williamson '12 A Singer Songwriter Redefining Country Music
Since St. Pius X graduate Lily Rose Williamson '12 signed with Big Loud/ Back Blocks Music/Mercury Records in 2022, her star has risen quickly. She has been on multiple tours with fellow musical innovator Sam Hunt and opened shows for Country-pop icon Shania Twain. In 2023 Lily Rose had her own global breakthrough when she sang on Diplo’s 2023 EDM-Country hit, “Sad in the Summer.” She also connected with a completely new audience through performances on NBC’s The Voice and ABC’s Good Morning America
This spring she released Runnin’ Outta Time. According to the Lily Rose website, “A co-writer on each track, it’s Lily at her most personal and honest, bundling her beliefs and contradictions into six new songs that explain who she is, where she came from and where she’s heading. It’s the perfect soundtrack for the intense push and pull in Lily’s life and a potent reminder of how important it is to take a breath and focus on the things that matter most. In this new chapter, Lily embodies the classic dichotomy between Saturday-night energy and Sunday-morning contemplation.”
summer Lily Rose joined her fellow Georgia dawg, Luke Bryan, on several dates of his “Mind of a Country Boy Tour.” She continues on the road with her own “Runnin’ Out of Time Tour” that runs from August through November in cities across the USA with a stop in Toronto, Canada. Joe Pitt '04
A Q&A with a Professional Animation Artist
Joe Pitt '04 is an artist in the animation industry with nearly two decades of experience working on various films and TV shows. While he has held many roles, he has primarily been a Character Designer for studios like Disney, DreamWorks, and Netflix. He currently lives in Burbank, CA, with his wife and six-year-old daughter. He and his wife have their own production company developing and directing projects for Warner Bros.
What is your educational background? I attended California Institute of the Arts, studying character animation from 2004-2007. When did you know you wanted to become a professional artist?
By age four, I discovered that people actually got paid to make cartoons. That became my career goal, and I haven’t mentally aged since.
What has been your favorite project to work on, or favorite character to develop?
The most rewarding project I’ve worked on has been Gravity Falls. It’s a project where I had a significant creative impact and the chance to work with some of my closest friends from college. It was a rare creative opportunity, and I feel very fortunate to have been a part of it and proud of the work we made.
As technology has rapidly evolved, what have been the biggest changes in animation? Change is constant. As a child, I dreamed of animating for a 2D Disney film. While preparing my portfolio for college to learn traditional animation, Disney and other studios announced they were no longer producing films this way. During my three years of college, I had to explore other interests in the field. Then, in my third year, Disney's leadership changed and revived 2D animation. I was fortunate to join Disney and work on what would become their last handdrawn film, The Princess and the Frog. Throughout my career, I've had to pivot multiple times due to evolving technology and audience demands. However, the one thing that has given me security in a constantly evolving landscape has been the ideas I bring. No matter what AI (artificial intelligence) technology threatens our industry with these days, good ideas will always win. No AI will ever be able to replace creative ideas that connect us with the human experience.
What advice would you give our young alumni interested in an art career?
I could say something fluffy like, "The best art comes from authenticity, so be your authentic self,” but making art as a career is hard. As artists, we tend to be introverts and bury our heads in the work we create. While that’s great, making art as a livable career tends to be more collaborative and can feel a lot like a team sport. So I’d say, "Be a good team player."
What is your favorite memory of being a St. Pius X student? I’d have to say making ridiculous videos with my classmates as class projects. I appreciated the teachers who let me do their assignments while allowing me to express myself creatively.

Gloria Gaytan, 77, has self-published a book, "Princess Roseabelle & The Rose People: Creation Quest." Gloria shares, "I was born a writer! I never studied writing at university, but I've always known what to say. It was great fun writing Princess Roseabelle. She is an elegant intellectual who dresses in miniature rose Chanel suits. She goes on a quest to save the mind of the Tiger Lilly Duke. I've never known a story where the female protagonist rescues a male protagonist."
Princess Roseabelle is a positive story with solid values to guide the formation of children. Gloria has also written two other books and is looking for an agent to publish: "The Christmas Dragon" and "The Lovely Lion."

Keith Melton, father of Brian Melton '07 and Sean Melton '09, published a poem in OpenDoor Magazine called Epiphany, which he dedicated to Monsignor Richard Lopez. The poem is in the Winter 2024 Issue: Frost and Firelight.
Epiphany
For Father Lopez
Sunlight
In window glass
The aching of my gloom in pieces -Again I hear the voices.
Ego, I surrender; stillness, I recant
Epiphany
Hallows my skin and exults in the scatter
And the Muse of God is re-painting
The sorrowful rooms
Of my heart with hues of ochre and bronze.
Redemption
A legacy from tattered flesh
My stowaway soul
Transcendental
In this leaven of faith, its gram weight
Nimble
And gathered
Its dappled light a splinter of husking gold.
The whirl of death
Defeated, its firelight brimming, remembering
Distance
With a radiant gleam.
The shape of being, promised, transparent Delivered
A whisper that guides all mystery, home.

Marian Goode Rosenberg ’77, along with her brothers, Mike Goode ’79 and Dan Goode ’76, rode in the 2024 BRAG (Bike Ride Across Georgia) in June. They rode bikes approximately 400 miles, along with about 1,000 other people, from Oglethorpe to Oxford, Social Circle, Milledgeville, Swainsboro, Statesboro, and finally Savannah, camping in each place -- at college campuses, parks, and schools. Marian’s favorite parts were pedaling through fields early in the morning, stopping in small towns along the backroads, and relaxing/recovering in the tent circle in the evenings. This was Marian’s third time participating in BRAG, Mike's fifth time, and Dan’s first. Sister Kathy ’81 is too wise to join!
