LETTER TO MY TEENAGE SON ABOUT MARRIAGE Dear Teenage Son, Today your dad and I celebrated our 24th wedding anniversary. It was a remarkable day since increasingly, marriages are falling apart. Tying the knot is the easy part, staying together requires intentional habits and staying in love most certainly does not happen by chance. Here are some things you may be unaware of that your dad has done well to keep us together and in love over the years By Kathryn Streeter

FEB/MAR 2018

Exercise has been a priority. We married young and he brought his high school football body into the marriage. Luckily, he quickly realized that without playing the game his muscles would soften and so he morphed into a runner. When we turned 30, just as when we turned 40, people continued to warn that rapid weight gain was practically guaranteed due to a slower metabolism and a sedentary lifestyle. Your dad thought it a ridiculous prophecy and rejected it. Because of this, at age 46 he kept up with you in the last Spartan Race competition. Not only is he able to be a more engaged father, his disciplined workout routine has kept me motivated to do the same. We have a fuller life because we can bike, paddle-board and hike together. Besides the natural health benefits of exercising, we recognize that our options are more open to the adventures we can have now in midlife and beyond. If the day comes, I imagine that we'll also be better able to keep up with grandkids. Synchronized habits. Your dad's professional

life has always meant that the alarm sounds early. Synchronizing our sleep habits was reasonable because we wanted to be tired at the same time so that our rising together helped launch a new day better. Establishing this routine helped us do the little but difficult daily things together like getting you out of bed for school. There were times in your dad's career when he'd barely get home in time to kiss you good night before you drifted to sleep. We'd then share a simple meal off the grill and though he'd be deservedly whipped, he would fill me in as I would him on the day. It helped keep our worlds connected. Too many couples fall apart because their worlds grow apart. When I've wronged him, he doesn't harbor resentment. Your dad doesn't keep a list about what I've done wrong. He doesn't keep score. This character quality is something I've admired in him since we were newlyweds. I'm profoundly grateful that he honestly lets things go after some disagreement has been righted. There are already too many

things that pull relationships apart. Nagging each other about trivia is perilous to a strong marriage. So is regurgitating past wrongs. It simply doesn't profit the relationship. Prioritizing play every weekend. Your dad likes to make memories together. Early on in our marriage, we did weekends very simply: we played together. When you kids entered the picture, we adjusted and went to playgrounds. We didn't have huge expectations for our weekends. The honey-do list didn't exist and neither did your dad have unrealistic expectations for me. We were content putzing around and playing together. Do couples who play together stay together? For us, yes. This doesn't negate the obvious, that, as you've often seen, he's often worked late into the nights. But play over the weekend was and always will be important. Forthcoming about the week's demands. We talk beforehand about what is scheduled for the upcoming week—no surprises means better FEB/MAR 2018

prepared. This time of exchanging and reviewing the pending week's schedule often revealed just how many times your dad had excused himself from various cocktail parties and receptions so as to get home at night. These conversations were illuminating to me: it underscored his desire to get home to us at the end of each intense day. It also helped me to prepare for the extra-long days as a work-at-home-mom (WAHM) when he was gone and I'd be running completely solo. Willingness to lead. Since I'm the product of an indecisive home, I've appreciated your dad's unapologetic direction. When I am ambivalent and he's felt strongly, I appreciated your dad showing decisiveness. It's a relief. He's offering something I don't have and helping us to be whole. Of course there are ways I solely contribute to our marriage partnership, but I humbly acknowledge that this isn't one of them. As you grow into manhood, you're learning from observing men in

your life. We both know that your dad hasn't been a perfect. But when he's messed up, he's been able to readily apologize and make fun of himself. He doesn't take himself too seriously. As your mom, I've been delighted to watch you two hang out together. Ultimately, these notes I've written down today are to help you know your dad more fully and recognize habits that have contributed to our marriage. This letter isn't to be confused with marriage insurance, as if such an equation existed to achieve a long, happy marriage. You're your own man. You'll be great just as you are.

YOUR CHILD'S WEIGHT "What's the right weight for my child?" is one of the most common questions parents have. It seems like a simple one, but it's not always easy to answer.

Among kids the same height and age, some are more muscular or more developed than others. That's because not all kids have the same body type or develop at the same time. Growth and Puberty

Not everyone grows and develops on the same schedule. During puberty, the body begins making hormones that spark physical changes like breast development in girls, testicular enlargement in boys, and spurts in height and weight gain in both boys and girls. Once these changes start, they continue for several years. The average kid can expect to grow as much as 10 inches (25 centimeters) during puberty before reaching full adult height. Most kids gain weight more rapidly during this time as the amounts of muscle, fat, and bone in their bodies change. All that new weight gain can be perfectly fine — as long as body fat, muscle, and bone are in the right proportion. Because some kids start developing as early as age 8 and some not until age 14, it can be normal for two kids who are the same gender, height, and age to have very different weights. It can feel quite strange for kids to adjust to suddenly feeling heavier or taller. So it's perfectly normal for a child to feel self-conscious about weight during adolescence — a lot of kids do.

Figuring Out Fat Using BMI

Experts have developed a way to help figure out if someone is in the healthy weight range for his or her height. It's called the body mass index, or BMI. BMI is a formula that doctors use to estimate how much body fat a person has based on his or her weight and height.

The BMI formula uses height and weight measurements to calculate a BMI number. Though the formula is the same for adults and children, figuring out what the BMI number means is a little more complicated for kids. For kids, BMI is plotted on a growth chart that uses percentile lines to tell whether a child is underweight, healthy weight, overweight, or obese. Different BMI charts are used for boys and girls under the age of 20 because the amount of body fat differs between boys and girls and body fat changes as kids grow. Each BMI chart is divided into percentiles. A child whose BMI is equal to or greater than the 5th percentile and less than the 85th percentile is considered a healthy weight for his or her age. A child at or above the 85th percentile but less than the 95th percentile for age is considered overweight. A child at or above the 95th percentile is considered obese. A child below the 5th percentile is considered underweight. Before you calculate your child's BMI, you'll need an accurate height and weight measurement. Bathroom scales and

tape measures aren't always precise. So the best way to get accurate measurements is by having kids weighed and measured at a doctor's office or at school.

What Does BMI Tell Us?

You can calculate BMI on your own, but consider asking your doctor to help you figure out what it means. Doctors do more than just use BMI to assess a child's current weight. They also take into account where a child is during puberty and use BMI results from past years to track whether that child may be at risk for becoming overweight. Spotting this risk early on can be helpful because changes can be made before developing a weight problem. Kids are developing weight-related health problems previously seen only in adults. Type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure (hypertension) are now commonly seen in overweight and obese kids and teens. They're also more likely to be overweight as adults. And adults who are overweight may develop other serious health conditions, such as heart disease.

Although BMI can be a good indicator of body fat, it doesn't always tell the full story. Someone with a large frame or a lot of muscle instead of excess fat (like a bodybuilder or athlete) can have a high BMI. Likewise, a small person with a small frame may have a normal BMI but could still have too much body fat. These are other good reasons to talk about your child's BMI with your doctor. If you think your child has gained too much weight or is too thin, a doctor should help you decide whether your child really has a weight problem. Your doctor has measured your child's height and weight over time and knows whether growth is proceeding normally. If concerned about your child's height, weight, or BMI, the doctor may ask questions about your child's health, level of physical activity, and eating habits, as well as your family medical history. The doctor can put all this information together to determine whether there's a weight or growth problem. If your doctor thinks your child's weight isn't in the healthy range, you will probably get specific dietary and exercise recommendations. It's important to follow a doctor's or dietitian's plan that's designed for your child. For kids and teens, significantly restricting calories or following fad diets or starvation plans can deprive them of the nutrients their growing bodies need and may actually slow down growth and sexual development. What if your child is worried about being too skinny? Most kids who weigh less than others their age are just fine. They may go through puberty on a different schedule than some of their peers, and their bodies may grow and change at a different rate. Most underweight teens catch up in weight as they finish puberty during their later teen years, and there's rarely a need to try to gain weight. In a few cases, kids and teens can be underweight because of a health problem that needs treatment. If your child feels tired or ill a lot, or has symptoms like a cough, stomachache, diarrhea, or other problems that have lasted for more than a week or two, talk with your doctor. Some kids and teens are underweight beFEB/MAR 2018

cause of eating disorders, like anorexia or bulimia, which need medical attention.

The Role of Genes

Heredity plays a role in a person's body shape and weight. People from different races, ethnic groups, and nationalities tend to have different body fat distribution (meaning they accumulate fat in different parts of their bodies) or body composition (amounts of bone and muscle versus fat). But genes are not destiny — kids can reach and keep a healthy weight by eating right and being active. Genes aren't the only things that family members may share. It's also true that unhealthy eating habits can be passed down. The eating and exercise habits of people

in the same household probably have an even greater effect than genes on someone's risk of becoming overweight. If parents eat a lot of high-calorie foods or snacks or don't get much exercise, their kids tend to do the same. The good news is these habits can be changed for the better. Even small changes, like cutting back on sugary drinks and going for a walk after dinner, can add up to make a real difference. So remember, it's not a specific number on the scale that's important. It's making sure that kids stay healthy — inside and out. www.kidshealth.org

4 BENEFITS OF LAUGHING YOUR WAY THROUGH THE NEW YEAR by Lee Volpe Like clockwork, people are composing their lists of New Year’s resolutions, and at the same time they’re ending this year with some of the same problems, frustrations or worries of past years. They want to take a brighter outlook and ride those resolutions to a higher quality of life in the New Year – but inevitably, familiar issues get them down year after year. How can this New Year be different? How can you stay more positive and hopeful despite problems that won’t go away when the big ball drops in Times Square? “Making laughter a part of your every-day life is the answer. When life gets tough, laughter begins,” says Lee Volpe (www.LeeVolpe.com), a humorist and author of Black Sheep Tries Bleach: Humorous Stories to Ease Life’s Growing Pains. “We all have humor inside us. It is so healthy to use it in a variety of ways. When you really deconstruct some things in your life that may be problems or annoyances, you can creatively come at them with laughter, and your whole outlook changes.” Mentally and physically, the benefits of laughter are many, Volpe says, and she lists five of those benefits that can help you make 2018 a happier New Year: • Reduces stress. Laughter reduces the level of stress hormones. such as cortisol and epinephrine (adrenaline), and it boosts the immune system. Science has further shown that after a good laugh, muscles FEB/MAR 2018

can be relaxed for up to 45 minutes. “Laughter is a free stress-management strategy, and in today’s pressurized, problem-filled world, there’s a big premium on that,” Volpe says. “Laughter is often the best kind of therapy.” • Burns calories. Everybody wants to lose weight in the New Year, right? “Laugh hard enough and you may be able to skip some gym visits – and who doesn’t want to do that,” Volpe says. Studies show that a good stream of laughter can burn 40 calories in 30 minutes. “I saw where you really can burn 75 calories in 30 minutes by banging your head against a wall,” Volpe says. “Knock yourself out.” • Becomes a coping mechanism. Laughter makes us feel good. Instead of complaining about life’s frustrations, trying to laugh about them helps. “Humor helps you keep a positive outlook through difficult situations,” Volpe says. “When something extremely frustrating or depressing occurs, try to take the longer view and envision that one day you’ll be able to look back on it and laugh. But why not laugh right now? You also feel stronger. This approach will also make you better equipped to deal with future negative events less stressfully.” • Brings people together, strengthens relationships. Laughter connects us with others. You can’t enjoy a laugh with other people unless you take the time to engage with them. “It improves the quality of social interaction you have with your friends, co-workers, and acquaintances,” Volpe

says. “The old saying is, ‘Laughter is contagious.’ If you bring more laughter into your life, you can help others around you to laugh more and reap the benefits of humor, which in turns helps them with their problems. It makes other people happy, because it’s very infectious, just like anger is.” “We all need more laughter with the way the world is these days,” Volpe says. “Maybe you can start by laughing at your own New Year’s resolutions list. For a lot of people it turns out to be a joke anyway. And it doesn’t have to be a new year to start a new day, a new outlook, for yourself.” ABOUT LEE VOLPE Lee Volpe (www.LeeVolpe.com) is the author of Black Sheep Tries Bleach: Humorous Stories to Ease Life’s Growing Pains. After a short career as an actress, Lee found her voice as a humorist, and has never looked back. Since 2011, she has been making a name for herself professionally as an honest, Laugh Out Loud (LOL) humor writer, dealing with daily life and relatable situations. Applauded for saying what most are thinking, Lee has the unique ability of finding wit in the way and amusement in the angle. Marcia Corbino of the Sarasota Herald-Tribune described Lee as “Erma Bombeck meets Sex and the City.”

The death of a loved pet is something no one wants to face, unfortunately most of us will have to. 65% of U.S. households own a family pet and each year, nearly 50 million of them pass on annually. As deeply saddening and heart wrenching as that is, Paw Pods’ burial pods help make that loss a little easier. With bio-degradable pods, owners can bury their pets at home with a dignified, beautiful memorial. The pods can be decorated with paints, markers or stickers giving children and adults a way to express their grief in an expressive and therapeutic form. A seeded leaf of perennial flowers is included with every pod. Its annual blooms create a living memorial to a treasured friend. Paw Pods recognizes that beyond the unconditional, pure loyal love and joy pets give us, their carbon footprint on our planet is next to none, so their afterlife should follow suit. All pods and urns are eco-friendly and made of bamboo powder, rice husk, and corn starch, designed to respectively degrade in 3-5 years after being introduced to the environment. Additionally, pet owners sometimes mistakenly flush what they believe is a dead fish down the toilet, when it’s in fact, very much alive. Those fish often wind up in lakes and rivers where they can introduce diseases to native fish and water sources. Paw Pods’ Fish Pod offers a safer way to lay pet fish to rest. Paw Pods are extremely affordable, ranging in price from $9.99 to $149.99, a fraction of what traditional pet caskets cost.

The loss of a fish may be a child’s first experience with death. These small fish shaped pods can help them avoid the trauma of seeing a pet flushed down the toilet. This also may serve as an important teaching tool for parents, death can be very difficult to explain, let alone comprehend for young children, make them a part of the process.

Accommodates medium-sized pets including rabbits, cats and smaller dogs. This size pod is the most commonly used.

When burial space is limited or cremation is preferred, the heart shaped urn is a lovely option and can also be used as a display.

They love all animals, from a tiny hermit crab to a majestic Great Dane, Paw Pods offers sizes for almost all pets. Anyone that has ever owned a pet, sought out on that adventure for companionship, to expand their homes and to open their hearts, find solace in knowing you are reciprocating that unequivocal love and friendship.

The body’s cell walls, or membranes, need cholesterol and the body uses cholesterol to produce hormones, vitamin D, and the bile acids that help to digest fat, but, the body needs only a small amount of cholesterol to meet its needs. To lower cholesterol, the American Heart Association recommends that one eat low saturated fat foods, quit smoking and exercise. The best cure of stress is to take control. 30

When you are feeling anxious or stressed, it can be very debilitating and can lead to procrastination or inefficiency as your mind is not is an efficient state to cope with all the demands on your plate. However, one of the keys to feeling calmer and more composed is to take stock of what you can and can't control. For instance, as a busy mother, you may have a huge list of tasks to get through in your day. You have made the assumption that you can achieve this 'monster' list because you expect that when you place your child down for a nap today you will have 2 hours of 'free-time' to get everything done. Unfortunately, something has upset your child today and she has taken much longer to settle and only sleeps for 30 minutes. You normal reaction might be to feel like a failure, to get angry or upset and to even criticise yourself for not being able to control this situation and have your child in a regular sleep routine. But what if you decided to rethink about what you can and can't control. This scenario is a very common one for mothers with young children. There is an

expectation that babies SHOULD just follow and routine. What mothers are often not considering is, like adults, children are not always predictable. How many times have you struggled to get to sleep or to sleep well because you were feeling sick; it was too hot; you were uncomfortable; you were upset; you were too cold and so on? A young child or toddler is unable to explain why he/she is having difficulty sleeping, yet parenting experts claim children just need to be placed in a routine to sleep and everything will work out fine. So it's no wonder that mothers blame themselves or their child when things don't go according to the experts' plans. If on the contrary, in situations like these, you stopped yourself from feeling upset about the 'uncontrollable' situation and you re-evaluated your list of tasks, you would begin to take control of

your emotions and amend your routine throughout the day accordingly. For instance, you may decide to play with your child for a while and then engage in the activities you had planned together. Even if you were planning on getting some chores done, you could let your child play next to you whilst your cleaned. You could also make the safe assumption that your child will most likely be extra tired that evening, so you could get those chores completed then. Either way, YOU have taken control and adapted to the 'uncontrollable' in a way that has reduced your stress levels and still enables you to complete the things on your list - with much less stress.

Depression comes from a feeling of being helpless and hopeless, so it makes sense that when you regain a sense of control, you begin to feel happier and more hopeful about the future. When you take control of your own health and wellbeing, you also reduce stress and boost self confidence

Some good examples of this are taking control of your:

WELLBEING: Committing to reducing salt and sugar intake

SELF ESTEEM: Being mindful of negative self-talk RELATIONSHIPS: Taking a breathe to think before

speaking in a 'snapping' tone to your partner or kids FINANCES: Making an appointment to see a financial planner CAREER: Taking stock of what will truly make you feel happy and balanced now that you have a family PERSONAL LIFE: Feeling comfortable with your parenting decisions and your personal beliefs and values FEB/MAR 2018

All these examples above are ways that you can regain control of your life. It is through this behaviour that you can boost your self confidence in times of stress and provide guidance and support for those you love most. Take a few minutes now to think about what you would like to regain control of this week and commit to doing this as soon as possible.
