Springwater Park Re: letter by Christine Shirota.

Dear Christine Shirota; We have read your letter and also have fond memories and a great interest in Springwater Park. For several years the annual Campbell family picnic was held there. This is a heritage site and should not be destroyed. With its beautiful trees, it is spacious and well laid out so as to give privacy for many family gatherings. We wrote a story about our Campbell picnic we are going to send along to the editor for his consideration to print for everyone’s enjoyment. We are very happy to have read your letter and the many other letters who have concerns about the park. We believe someone wants this land at a small price for a development for profit and not for the people. We hope everyone will be able to continue to enjoy the birds and animals and all the special features of this park. Vincent and Dianne Barnes.

Annual Campbell Picnic Summer, 2000

reported by Vincent J. Barnes It’s fair to say our 2nd annual attendance at the Campbell picnic was another great success. The picnic was arranged by Judy Campbell, who paid the cost of park space for the event. Costs include the special effect for the affair, such as ribbons, safety pins, balloons, hemp sacks, ski boards, ropes, and much more. Our group arrived at the appointed hour of 1:pm at the Springwater Provincial Park, near Barrie, Ontario. Judy is a mild natured, fun loving person, who knows what her expectations are. She has never lost touch with her inner child, organizing the children for each event, the adults as well. She had a program for the day, of lunch, a scavenger hunt and some prearranged games. She was very determined to make a success of the day, which it was. After an enjoyable lunch, the day started with the scavenger hunt, everyone joined in, turning out to be somewhat hilarious, followed by some games, earning everyone a ribbon. I became the proud owner of a red ribbon, for the best date and nut cake at the event. With a stretched ego and being somewhat elated, having won this special event’s ribbon, had nothing to do with the fact that no one else brought a cake. The fact remains, without a doubt, it was the best cake. The games started off with the balloon bursting contest. Eighteen contestants lined up in three columns, received a balloon each; including Cole the youngest contestant and myself the eldest contestant. Each contestant in turn ran to a chair set up at the finish line, placed their balloon on the chair and sat on it. Cole, being somewhat light, had to bounce on the balloon several times, until the balloon burst, consuming too much valuable time, then run back to the next in line. One balloon slipped out from under a lady’s posterior, causing her to jump up, running to retrieve her balloon. She then sedately positioned herself over the balloon, and did achieve a good bang! During the din of balloons bursting, and contestants racing back to their own line, all causing much hilarity. There were sack races, wheelbarrow races, passing the orange under the chin to the next contestant, plank walking in three’s and pairs and many other games. The passing the orange contest reminded me of a group of flamingos making love, or is it just necking they do, I’m not sure. Judy arbitrarily separated the Barnes’ Children on some events, due to the fact they won too many red ribbons last year. This time Judy arranged the contestants more to their age and size. This year water guns were banned, as this unplanned event became a little rowdy last year. The games culminated with a tug of war, where the contestants didn’t arrange themselves according to size and weight. While sitting out this event, I noticed there were too many heavies on the opposing team, so I supported the “handicapped” team. The opposing team had such heavies as Paul, Heather, Deanne and Andy. The handicapped team contained Cole, (whose total weight is probably less than

The rope was straining to the breaking point as Dianne fiercely did her share of pulling as did Paula and Cole; Trevor, his face flushed strained with his effort. The oppositions to the chant of pull, pull, pull, echoed while they gradually hauled them down the field. Trevor’s mom, Diane, had sprinkled water on the grass, to give them a slippery footing, but this didn’t impede the opposition. I rushed in, to lend a little support, because it was no contest. Hopefully this was unnoticed by the opposing force as we were being dragged down the field. My adopted team began to hold ground and then regained some ground only to loose it again when we began going in the “wrong” direction. This see-saw went on for what seemed eternity, until once again, loosing as the rope burned our hands, we conceded victory. Then, of course, they subjected us to a lot of crowing, hooting and heckling. “We won! We won!” While being heckled, Nyla walked past me, nodding her head and emphatically said, “I saw that!” Like I had just performed some despicable act. Well heck! I always supported the under dogs anyway, even if I infringed a little on behalf of the handicapped team, who would have lost much more quickly. This report on the Annual Campbell Picnic, could not have been completed without the input of Dianne and Heather Campbell who assisted in recalling some of the happenings of the day, and of course grammatical editing.
