t may be into its 12th year but Spring Fling never seems to age, writes Carol Hogarth. Every May, without fail, the open studios weekend offers something fresh and new keeping itself, its artists and its visitors on their toes. This year another 22 new artists have been included in the Spring Fling studios trails offering visitors the chance to visit new places and enjoy new work, from ceramics and textiles to traditional fine art and jewellery. Spring Fling director Leah Black says introducing new blood is the result of year-round work with artists and makers at all stages of their careers: “In close collaboration with artists and our partners we offer creative and professional development in the form of residencies, specialist mentoring, youth projects, public art commissions,

and digital training. “By adding new elements to the event and the year round programme we are continually enticing new artists to join – artists of all ages and at varying stages of their career – and we know that different elements appeal to different artists.” Leah says Spring Fling, the event, flourishes partly because of this on-going dialogue with artists throughout the year. “The combination of fresh, new blood and well-loved established veterans is what makes Spring Fling the rich, diverse and unique experience it is for visitors and art lovers.”
