The Torquay Rotary Club led by President Lesley Shedden has continued to support much needed projects in the Torquay Community, Regionally & Internationally. January & February are very busy months for Club Members with the Annual Book Fair on Australia Day & the Motor Show on the Torquay Foreshore in February. The Book Fair exceeded all expectations & with the coordinated work of Torquay Central Probus, volunteers from Diversitat, Spring Creek Community House and the Rotary team ensured the efficient setup/pack up and running of the event. We thank Torquay & Lorne Books for the donation of brand new books and Hayden’s for advertising. Another example of the fabulous work of Rotary.

On a very windy Sunday in February, Club members began early to prepare the foreshore for the over 300 vehicles that had travelled from many places to enter in the 10th Anniversary of the Motor Show. Competitors, families & visitors enjoyed this now annual event on the Torquay Foreshore, where they were treated to a huge spectacle of very special vehicles.

Today’s Scout’s

1st Torquay Scout Group, at Spring Creek Reserve, is the place to look if you’re interested in adventure and learning life skills. Our group is growing and always welcomes adults, boys and girls aged from 6 up, to get involved and join one of our sections: Joey Scouts, Cub Scouts, or the Scout Section. Youth members develop leadership skills in small groups, challenge themselves with outdoor activities, and learn about local and global issues in a fun way. The scouting program helps kids develop resilience, self-reliance, initiative, responsibility and become valuable members of their community. Scouting is about learning by experience and being prepared for new adventure!

Kids don’t have all the fun! Adults can join the team as trained Leaders and Adult Helpers (no uniform needed). All Leaders and regular helpers undergo a Police Clearance and Working With Children (WWC) Clearance. All leadership training is provided through Scouts Australia Institute of Training (SAIT), a registered training organisation accredited to award Certificate III, IV or Diploma in Leadership. Be Prepared...to help young people be their best!...to contribute to your community!...to rediscover Adventure!! Torquay Lions Club

Lions worldwide are in their centenary year and undertaking a wide range of activities. The Torquay club is in the early stages of organising a centenary project having particular benefit for our local youth (more details next issue). We are also running a membership drive to coincide with the centenary. Information leaflets will be available from lion’s members, at BBQs and from the Lions Train. Contact can also be made on our website: www.torquaylions.org. au Another recent project was to combine with Torquay Rotary to publicise our clubs with the welcome reappearance of Lions and Rotary signs at the entrances to Torquay following their absence of about five years. A recent donation to Mr Keith Menzel of Winchelsea deserves some publicity. Keith, who is 78, is wheelchair bound after an accident on his farm in 2007. His current motorised chair was recently deemed irrepairable and a new chair, customised to Keith’s special need was proving to be very expensive. Despite a number of grants being available he was $1600 short. It was discovered that Keith had been a member of Torquay Lions before moving to Winchelsea and when his plight was brought to our attention the necessary funds were soon found. All the best Keith! Apart from the usual BBQ and train activities, a number of our members were involved in marshalling duties near the start of the RACV Great Otway Classic Ride. We were active at the recent Relay for Life conducted at the footy ground. Lions donated $1500 towards the cause and were involved in both the set up and clean up for the event, whilst 14 of our members participated on the day.
