Surf Coast Rural Australians for Refugees ORGANISATIONS CO-OPERATE FOR HARMONY & CULTURAL DIVERSITY

Kim Edgar and Laura Connor work together for harmony and diversity

This year community organisations co-operated to celebrate Harmony Day (March 21st) and Cultural Diversity Week (March 18 – 26) with two events dedicated to promoting respect, fairness and a sense of belonging for all. Torquay library, Spring Creek Community House, Diversitat Geelong and Surf Coast Rural Australians for Refugees all co-work with the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre to emphasise what, in these fraught times, unites rather than divides us. On March 16th Janelle Hearn from Diversitat Geelong presented ‘Walking the path of Refugees’, an opportunity for the public to explore what it is like to live in a world of persecution, fear and uncertainty and why people are forced to seek asylum. The session, held at the Torquay Library, examined the world crisis and gave context to the Australian humanitarian program. This was an opportunity to meet local people from both Asylum Seeker and Refugee backgrounds who now call Geelong home.

On March 18th Melbourne’s Asylum Seeker Resource Centre supported the local community with a workshop at Spring Creek Community House which was designed to help shift the community conversation around people seeking asylum. The workshop was a day of collaboration, strategy and action. These workshops are for anyone who wants to take action on refugee rights, and will involve working with others in their area to achieve a sustainable change in community attitudes. Contact the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre to find the next available workshop. These activities brought together local people from all walks of life to promote community harmony and celebrate the many cultures that make our region so vibrant.
