Literacy Dog Coming to Baltic On October 24, 2008 Miriam Drew and George were given a check from the Jewett City Savings Bank to

begin their Literacy Dog Training. Shortly after receiving the check Ms. Drew enrolled George at Tails-U-Win in Manchester, CT. Mrs. Drew will be writing regular updates in the months to come! George is off to a great start! We started Family Dog I class on the 10th of November at Tails-u-Win in Manchester. The first class I went to alone and learned what I needed to, to ensure a successful education for George. I learned how and when to use a new tool called a “clicker” and when to give a treat. He loves learning already! All week long I clicked and treated for all the behavior that I wanted to reinforce, he’s such a good dog that he earned many treats this week. The second class was held the following week on the 17th. This was the first class George attended. He

was so curious about everything and everyone around him, when we walked through the door he wagged his tail and tried to make friends. We learned some new games that teach “checking in” and “targeting” as well as responding to his name and performing doggie massage… needless to say George was the most relaxed dog in class. Training is held for an hour and when time was up he was ready to go, he slept the entire ride home! Each week we are given a homework assignment to learn and tasks to perform. The tasks build on what we learned in class and what we learned the week before. We can’t wait until our next class. ~ Mrs. Drew
