The two options to make are concrete or asphalt. Both these surfaces are flat but not good for foot grip. Therefore the first basic system to apply on this is non cushioned which gives it the required characteristics like anti glare, anti slip etc. Cushion surface is required to reduce the fatigue of player playing for longer hours. Presently for outdoor there are two technologies available 1) rubber cushion 2) PU cushion. In rubber the SBR or rubber crumbs from scrap in desired size is mixed in resin or liquid rubber and applied in situ to provide cushion to the system. In PU water based PU is applied to provide cushion to the system. Liquid rubber system mixed with SBR is the most economical one. Another option is Pre fabricated SBR mats in certain thickness like 4mm or 8mm. They are glued down on the floor and then acrylic or PU based systems can be applied on it. The major difference is cost. Also the cushion effect of pre fab system is far superior to cushioned system. And one

Q

What is the USPs of your flooring products? We deal in many types of flooring like Acrylic, PU , Wooden Synthetic Grass etc. As our company policy, we only promote those floorings or systems which are suited for our country, are durable and long lasting. For instance we are probably the only company selling wooden flooring with right Moisture content as per the region required. Our wood installation in say GOA will have different rating to wood installed in Delhi NCR.

Q

How distinct is tennis court flooring WRT other courts including badminton and others. They are poles apart. For instance Badminton is indoor game and wooden is the best surface for it. Tennis is outdoor game and acrylic is the best surface for it.

With urban spaces expanding, cycle manufacturers will experience significant growth

C

ycling as a mode of transport in India does not enjoy the same status as it is in the developed countries. This environment-friendly two-wheeler has been mostly seen as a vehicle for poor despite creating economic opportunities for many. Understandably, for a long time, this sector has been largely deprived of favorable policy push. Compared to China, less than 50 percent of rural household in India own a bicycle. The number is a whopping 100 pc in China. Globally, Indian bicycles don’t receive much attention due to the technological gap and the products mostly cater to the market of South Asia and Africa. Thankfully, a large growing millennial population in India and several government schemes to enroll underprivileged children into school, cycles are receiving attention. So much so that, this tide can be translated to an annual growth of 8% till 2022 for cycle manufacturing sector in India, according to ‘India Bicycle Market Outlook, 2022’.

The roadblocks that lie ahead

16

MAY 2019

Government policy has treated this industry rather poorly. To buy a bicycle, a person below poverty line can’t get any loan. One can’t make a down payment to buy a cycle. For people in

SPORTZ BUSINESS INSIGHT | VOL 01 | ISSUE 05

rural India, this attitude is particularly unkind. In the past interim budget of 2019, finance minister Piyush Goyal announced a bunch of schemes to invigorate rural economy. Mainly, automobile received the most attention. Without relaxing the tax, cycle can’t be made available to the common man. There was no hint of that in the interim budget. China’s aggressive export poses a serious threat to India. China’s export business is 25 times higher than India. In 2008, China bought 21 million e-bikes, compared with 9.4 million autos. In 2009, China had about four times as many as e-bikes on the road as cars. There were a total of 120 million e-bikes on China’s bike path. The global cycle market is estimated at $61 billion in 2013. By 2025, the market will be worth of $75.47 billion. The growth rate is predicted to be 6.1%. 66% of the cycles sold globally are made by China. China enjoys a better infrastructure and favorable export policy. In the global market, Chinese cycles cost 15% less than Indian cycles. India, the 2nd largest producer of bicycles churns outonly 10% of the world’s annual bicycle production. China’s PBS, Public Bicycle Sharinginitiative was introduced in 2014. It was piloted by Ofo and Mobike. After bicycles flooded public spaces,

INDUSTRY INSIGHT

Chinese government tried to cut down the production. China is now trying to dump the excess production in countries like India. Indian manufacturers’ association staged resistance to the flow and urged the government to impose ‘Make in India’ policy. Similar resistances were formed in European Union. To be at the same footing as China, government needs to consider higher duty drawback from 12.3 per cent to 15 per cent FOB price. A bonus incentive of 2 per cent of FOB price can be considered as well.

Silver linings

Amidst this grim picture, there are factors that can revitalize the cycling manufacturing sector. Lifestyle cycle market in India is building strength. To beat lifestyle diseases like obesity and cardiovascular diseases, urban youth is getting interested in bicycles as a tool for both mobility and fitness. But the tricky part is, the urban network of roads in India is not made for bicycles commute. Despite the unfavorable infrastructure, bicycle clubs in urban India are sprouting everywhere. This is good news to the manufacturers. Taking note of the change, bicycle manufacturers are also molding themselves accordingly. The focus is being shifted on recreational bicycles. Atlas and Avon for a long time, dominated the Indian bicycle market. Now, more and more international players are coming up. International brands like Trek, Kona are setting up units here. The age group of 18-35 is conceiving a new fervor for bicycles. The millennials who believe in giving back to the community, are taking to cycles like never before. The manufacturers are trying to cater to their interests. In November 2009, TI cycles, a part of Murugappa group-entered into a joint venture to sell the American range of leisure bikes, Schwin, in India. Utilizing TI Cycle’s distribution base, Schwin is reaching out widely. Schwin targets the young demographic and it keeps introducing new models frequently to diversify their stock. Fomas range is another player which targets the young demographic interested in lifestyle bicycles. Known for their high-end models, this Indo-Chinese venture imports 10,000 units a year and is looking at a growth of 25 per cent annually. The industry expects a lot of incentives from government for a phenomenal growth. Motor vehicles are given heavy subsidies, excise duty cuts, petroleum subsidy. As a sustainable clean mode of transport, cycles also deserve government subsidies. The Energy and Research Institute recommends, “If we are spending

thousands of crores on motor subsidies, a 260 crore or more to cycles doesn’t seem to be high. Government should finance the availability of cycles to the lower-income population.” In many remote parts of the country, distribution of cycles among underprivileged children and specially women has shown great social changes. The percentage of dropouts has gone down, more teenage girls have enrolled into schools and mobility of women has increased. Keeping the positive impact in mind, government should introduce cycle distribution schemes more enthusiastically in schools. In most of India city budgets, cycling track doesn’t receive adequate funding. Even if there’s a cycle track, it has bad lighting and affected by lack of maintenance.

Awareness campaigns should be launched on behalf of government to promote cycle in urban spaces. To bridge the technological gap in manufacturing sector, the cycling sector is in dire need of revamping. There is alack of testing labs, lack of R & D infrastructure for advanced bicycle technologies. Indian plats still use a manual way of wielding. To be at par with international standards, automated assembly should be introduced. Thankfully, several state governments in Karnataka, West Bengal and Bihar are committed to the free cycle distribution scheme vigorously. Every year, crores of budgets are being dedicated to that cause. Cycle manufacturers do have a lot of hope for their future, thanks to a new-grown enthusiasm for the vehicle on both urban and rural front.

take to install a gym In India I

ndian fitness industry has marked a tremendous surge on the Indian turf. Amid so much awareness spreading through platforms like multi-media, social media, Publication and active and healthy lifestyle cult, Indians are taking fitness into their account earnestly. Subsequently, people across varied age groups are heading to their nearby gyms. This phenomenon triggers a golden opportunities for young trainer and fitness coaches to invest in starting a fitness center suiting the requirement of their nearby clients. For starting a fitness center or gym, one needs to be very careful regarding a lot many things and taking 'installation of gym' as a tiring job, one needs to check these facts: Map out your location or site Before you purchase gym equipment, you need to measure how much space it will take to get fitted in your future gym. It is not advisable to clutter your workout station by installing a lot of gym equipment as this will clog the free space for the gym comers and makes it a tough job for the engineers to repair the equipment. There should be optimum space inside the gym to free walk and stretch muscle before starting main daily scheduled workouts. Budget One should invest much time on researching and comparing the gym equipment before actual investment over the gym equipment. As there are plethora of options available in the internet one should do his homework before actually putting their trust onto a particular gym equipment brand. Basic knowledge of equipment genres The gym owners should understand different genre of gym and fitness equipment. They should understand the difference between a cardio fitness machine and strength fitness machine. Cardio equipment includes Treadmills, Rowing, Elliptical Trainers stairs Steppers while Strength equipment featuresdumbbells, shoulder press, pec deck and others. Quest for brands Go for a high-end brand whose gym equipment

are internationally appreciated due to their sturdy design and precise functionalities. Dimension Dimension matters a lot to the effectiveness of the gym equipment-as well as safety measure. With an accurate dimension, one can put exact effort to the target muscle developing it on long run.

It is mandatory for a gym owner to get AMC from the original supplier of the equipment. Using shortcuts by getting their equipment serviced from un-authorised technician only results to the depereciation of the equipment by 50%. Review As applied to other products in general, one also needs to read reviews of gym equipment given by their users sharing their experience and suggestions. With such crucial piece of information, one can choose an appropriate gym equipment for his gym . Maintenance and warranty As you are going to invest huge chunk of your budget over these machine, it is highly recommended to check whether the brand from which you are installing your gym, do they follow such policies or not.It is essential to check the gym equipment warranty and Maintenance measure offered by the company. Always go for such companies which have a transparent policy for warranty and maintenance. SPORTS INFRA

HOW TO IMPROVE INDIAN SPORTS INFRASTRUCTURE In a bid to transform a saying, which states ‘India is a sports-loving country rather than sports playing country’, there is still a long way to head towards getting more developed and flourishing sports infrastructure in India. Taking from every individual involvement to the government’s attention, there is an immediate requirement of creating a sporting cult in every part of the country irrespective of states and districts.

In India, a large proportion of the population is shared by the youth, which can be considered as the building blocks of a much potential market of India. Amid such a potential market of India, there is a dire need that the government of India takes some initiative to beckon more young entrepreneurs to start investing in the Indian sports section. By calling these Young Turks on board, the government can open new gates for some non-conventional business format and let them contribute to India's GDP. The governments can take some handy initiative in order to enrich the Indian sports sector along with its infrastructure: a. Graduating sports sector as an industry b. Promotion of Sports sector education program c. Monetary assistance to the sportsbased firms d. Giving a boost to R & D in the sports sector

Graduating sports sector as an industry

22 MAY 2019

With so many years of haul in winning any remarkable medals in tournaments like Olympics, World Cups, and others, it is quite apparent that something is still missing in our preparation. After focusing in deliberately into the issue, it has come up to the light that devoid of proper coaching as well as the less developed infrastructure, are a few retarding facts for Indian sports which further constitutes the main reason of such poor performance in Olympics medal tally.

SPORTZ BUSINESS INSIGHT | VOL 01 | ISSUE 05

India is a rapidly growing economy and with the new turbulence of media coverage and cheap data connection (Internet) across the country, a lot has been projected to be done in the sector like sports. Erstwhile, Sports sectors which were majorly occupied by the cricket now a lot many other sports have emerged following multisporting events and Leagues enriching the dormant sector of sports. At present, India is hosting extravagant league of Indian Premier League(Cricket), Indian Super League(Football), Hockey India League(HIL), Pro Kabaddi League and India Badminton League are doing great on Indian sports and media channels. Joining the bandwagon, recently, inassociation with Dabur India, the KhoKho Federation of India (KKFI) has also launched a major franchise based league for the sport named Ultimate KHO-KHO. Apparently, Indian sports sector is on the

SPORTS INFRA

rise which subsequently raises a golden platform for sports entrepreneurship. Marking as the high time to pour for money in the sector, there is an immense need for young entrepreneurs to recognize Indian sports sector potential and kick off their own startups. Gone are the days, when India used to be known for their sport of cricket only as now there are many other sports like tennis badminton, squash, hockey and many others which have emerged where Indian athletes are making country to feel proud. Amid such positive vibes, there is a need that the government should recognize as a prolific industry which also happens to generate huge employment across several sectors like apparel, Sports medicine, Sports tourism, and other allied sectors.

If you want medals then you must nurture sportspersons in the first place. In the same way, the Indian Government needs to pour in money for technological advancement like sports analytics which assists a lot in coaching professional athletes. The government should also pay attention to other requisites of the sports and the sportsperson like nutrition, physiotherapy, qualitative turf, and sensors. Besides, there is a need to work more on units like Process cum Product Development Centre (PPDC) to research and develop more precise sports goods of international quality in the Indian market. The Centre works under the government’s

Regulation of Sports sector education program

Education can change anything taking from sex education, consumer awareness or in this case of sports, it can really educate the real entrepreneurial character hidden beyond the sports grounds and players. Subsequently, there is an immense need to educate students with a little bit dose of Sports Education. At the time, when the sports sector is all set to attain industry status, the demand for a well-constructed sports education system is on the rise. The phenomenon is quite evident seeing a sudden influx of several sports management program, sports medicine, sport, and other affiliated sector sports related pedagogy in india. This only shows that the incumbent government is putting much effort to promote programs that cater to the Industry-based sports education.

Monetary assistance to the sportsbased firms

Beckoning more and younger entrepreneurs on board, the Indian government must rise monetary funding and offer tax holidays for sportsbased firms. These acts not only infuse confidence into the heart of young budding entrepreneurs but also cater a welcoming gesture for the industry which has a global presence at present.

Giving a boost to R & D in the sports sector

MSME sector which is also entitled to train Indian poor students about the nitty-gritty of sports goods manufacturing and testing in the laboratories. This training will further boost up the confidence of these poor Indian youth as well as generate employment in this niche sector of sports goods manufacturing. Some more key areas where Indian government needs to pay attention in order to strengthen indigenous sports infrastructure: • Schools: Schools, being the fundamental platform to nurture young budding talents; they play a pivotal role in shaping up

SPORTS INFRA

Indian sporting culture and infrastructure. In the last couple of years, apparently, the government has come up with sports friendly initiatives including Khelo India and others in favor of Indian grassroots sports programmes. • Broadcast more sports: Broadcasting of sports matters not only in India but also across the globe, it not just makes the tournament in demand but also attracts more young kids to aspire for the sport. The phenomenon is quite clear with the widespread favoritism for the sport of cricket. In the meantime, other sports are also marking their presence on the national television following the commencement of many leagues in the last half-decade.

24 MAY 2019

• Get Corporates in on the action: Seeing so much sports leagues starting India, it is quite evident that corporates are taking interest in Indian sports sector by sponsoring these leagues running for weeks. In the last than a half-decade, many Sports Leagues come into the field including IPL (Needless To Say), HIL, Pro Kabaddi League, Boxing league and now in near future there will be Kho Kho League in India. Each and Every league being endorsed by some corporates major players like Vivo Mobiles endorses both Indian Premier League and Pro Kabaddi League. Such endorsements not only build brand recognition of the leagues

SPORTZ BUSINESS INSIGHT | VOL 01 | ISSUE 05

but also attract more audience and viewers both online and offline for the leagues, following several marketing strategies. Therefore, the sports ministry of the Indian government should be welcoming for any foreigner or national company to pour in money creating a league. • Infrastructure: India stands at a lowly rank of 103rd on the Global Human Capital Index and 29th on the Global Sports Impact Index. The data establish a direct relationship between sports and quality of human capital of a country. The fact is quite sufficient for India’s policymakers to take stature of Indian sports culture earnestly if we really want to excel on the international turf. And there are a lot many things to do yet. In India statistics states that a huge mass of our population i.e. 42% love to participate in playing cricket, while other sports including Badminton, Cycling, Running, Football, Volleyball, Tennis, Swimming, etc.) is below 13%. Apparently, Indians have never been nurtured as a sports person. Devoid of not such sporty aspiration engrained in our psyche, the sports could not manage to be a part of our integral part of life. However, the sector has been featured by only a few percentages of people. The passion for sports has only resided in a small percentage of the population. Now here is a thing, until India takes earnest effort to increase participation at the grassroots level, Indians will continue to lag behind, not only on the social development & youth involvement parameters But also perform measurably at several sports events. • Structured Competition: In this section, There is a need to reach out Indian sporting talents with a structured competition format which not only polishes their talents but also inspire other budding talents to come out of their ghetto. In India, the irony is that federation lacks sum and is mostly work under the corrupt system of donations and funds. Without caring much about the sportsperson spirit, the people at the helm of the federation loot a huge sum of money allotted to the several sports development programs. The government really needs to see into such discrepancies.

HOW TECHNOLOGY CAN CHANGE THE PURSUIT OF INDIAN SPORTS

26

MAY 2019

Amid so much technological advancements in the sports sector, it has attained a new height of perfection. Ranging from bio mechanics, data collection, data analysis, smart wearables and other allied AI based gadgets are changing the pattern of not only of playing a sport but also upgrading viewer’s experience. Then there are data analytics which is transforming the competitiveness of the sport today, by tracking down the athlete’s performance on and off the field. Other developed countries like USA, UK , Germany and even China are the forefront contenders for using sports technologies in a major way, improving the performances of their athletes,

SPORTZ BUSINESS INSIGHT | VOL 01 | ISSUE 05

however, India has still long way to go in attaining such precision over the application of technology in sports. This is quite evident seeing the number of medals these athletes bringing home being the world seventh largest and 2nd most populated country in the world. The athletes from these super power nations always stay one step ahead to our indigenous athletes. This doesn’t mean that our athletes don’t have that talent to hunt medal but there is something which give those international athletes an extra point as in technology backed training module which has carved the finest athleticism out of them. With the application of technology, UK and USA improvise talent of their athletes every day by analyzing their

TECH

Some major verticals of technology in sports: Self: In this segment technology is being used to enhance and modify sportsperson’s physical or genetic makeup by using stuffs like Vaccines, Performance Enhancement drugs, and Prosthetic Limbs. With the advent of hybrid stuffs in the international market, it has augment the competiveness at sports meets as well as surging the number of cases for violating anti-doping policies of these tournaments. Turf: In this segment, technology is being used to enhance and change the appearance on which game is played. It includes shifting from dry-ash tracks to synthetic tracks, natural grassy filed to a astro turf known for better speed and grip to the players’ boot s. Sports Equipment: In this segment, technology is being used to improve and change the sports equipment which players use at the time of game. It includes high end bats with better engineering over their grips, data collecting tennis racquets and other.

performance data. Setting more personal best as in outcome, these athletes take themselves to their utmost limit. Other way round coaches are also using this tech backed tool to extract desired performer out of amateur players. With a deliberate record accumulated by the video recording and data collecting gadgets, the sportsman committee members including coaches and trainer can further plan out athlete’s meal plans, schedule training and evaluate their performance. It won’t be wrong to say that with the application of technology, the team’s chances of winning a match or tournament has increased. As for the same they keep an eye over the performance of young players and prepare them for the major events. American Olympic Team following the same trend has shown tremendous surge in their medals tally by bagging 126 medals in 2016 as compared to 103 in 2012.

Movement: In this segment, technology is being used to record and analyze sportspersons’ physical movement earnestly by using Videotapes Analysis, GPS Performance Trackers. Smart Wearables: In this segment, technology is being used to record athletes daily physical, suggesting them the right posture for a particular sport and other physical activities. It also record how much energy one has lost while exercising. Some of the best knowing examples: Smart watches, T-shirt with Nano chips, Running shoes and others. Database: Athletes majorly use these tools to store player’s performance statistics which is further used to review and compare with the other players. In the market, one can find FitBit, Player Stats and other allied database gathering tools. Despite such advantages come with the introduction of technology in sports, this paradigm shift also comes with some allegation questioning the essence of using too much technology in a game.

As sports are the domain where humans strive to overcome mental and physicals barriers in order to attain crest of human body’s achievement. Such an elongated usage of technology can evade ‘Human factor’ off the field. Experts are quite concern with such phenomenon changes coming in the field of sports in order to reach crescent performance of an athlete, they are also question over it, whose answers are yet to find.

Where does Indian Sports sector amid such a paradigm shifting?

28 MAY 2019

Being such a large country (World’s no7) and the 2nd most populated country, Indian athletes has not started bagging many enough medals as the world stage. At a time, when athletes are getting all sort of technical assistance improving their own personal performance, in the contrast Indian athletes are still deependent on their conventional mode of training. The fact can be realized seeing still Indian wrestlers from Haryana who usually represent the country in the sport of wrestling, they practice it in Akhadas, which is cherished by the old generation of orthodox wrestlers. If India really wants to ascend on the medal tally of global sports meets like Olympics, there is an immediate need to invest in sports science and infrastructure

SPORTZ BUSINESS INSIGHT | VOL 01 | ISSUE 05

of international quality. Taking a cue from China, which also happens to be the most populated country in the world, India needs to learn the way they train their athletes using technology and always end up giving a solid competition to America on Olympic medal tally. The Chinese government welcome new entrepreneur to start investing in sports infrastructure and technology. They don’t see this sector to only producing better sportsperson but also see the sector as an important pillar in their steadfast economy. In India, there is a need to invite private players to pour in money in sports technology. Following the same effort Times of India has been organizing a three day exhibition viz. Global Sports Business Show since 2016 and recently concluded its third version in October last year in Mumbai. The Exhibition focuses on developing the sports technology and infrastructure market in India. Indian Olympian Association, being one of the few sports federation ties up with this TOI’s Initiative. It is commendable to have such efforts to promote non-cricket facet of Indian sports which pose positive sign for India’s preparation for the upcoming Olympics.

IBM BRINGS CRICKET IN THEIR SILICON VALLEY CAMPUS

ESPN SIGNS A MAJOR DEAL WITH BIG12

International Business Corporation has built a cricket ground inside of its Silicon Valley campus. The American MNC is trying to encourage engineers and developers to step away from their computers for a while and engage in physical activities. In a first-of-its-kind initiative, IBM has installed a regulation cricket oval for their employees. The project was the idea of IBM executive, Dinesh Nirmal. As part of the ‘Cricket and Code’ program, Dinesh hopes the initiative will bring ‘heath, connection and creativity’ to the employees and high school students within IBM’s AI camp. The ground was inaugurated on April 30th. India’s consul general in San Francisco, Sanjay Panda attended the ceremony. Panda has been an advocate of Indian tech community in the bay area. Dinesh Nirmal said in a statement to Sportstechie, “I think cricket and coding have a lot of common. As with Software development, you need to be agile, to respond in an instant to unforeseen events- in cricket you have to calculate in the blink of an eye how the arc are affected by onset of wind, for example. In both, you need to pay attention to the quality. Cricket is also collaborative. If you are a fields person, for example, you need to able to read the pitcher’s mind. It’s the same teamwork I see in the lab.”

ESPN is onboard with Big 12 conference, which is a collegiate athletic conference headquartered in Texas. This transaction entitles ESPN to access exclusive content of the first five power conference.Sports Business Daily has reported the contract cost ESPN $40 million. The agreement will be valid till 2024. ESPN will carry every single football championship as part of the deal. The new deal includes three champion games which Fox Network declined to seal in 2019, 2021 and 2023. Hundreds of sports under Big 12 brand will be broadcast on ESPN. More than 50 schools have given ESPN exclusive access to all of their events throughout the year. Texas, which has its own network, Longhorn Network will not provide content to ESPN. The same is with Oklahoma. These two schools will not come under the deal due to previous commitment to local networks. But both the school will be broadcast on streaming service when they will be away during conference championships outside of football and basketball. Initially, Baylor, Kansas, Kansas State and Oklahoma State will provide games in 2019. The next year, Iowa State, TCU, West Virgina and Texas Tech will be participating.

ENHANCE CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE AT YOUR SPORTS RETAIL STORE In today’s day and age when online shopping is steadily encroaching retail experience, how retailers engage with their customers is a vital issue. To garner brand loyalty and customer satisfaction, fitness retailers might have to go for extra mile to survive. Most of the sports goods stores sell the same product and in the long run, one single franchise can’t hope to win. So, selling solely fitness merchandise will not get the job done. Selling an engaging experience is equally important.

34 MAY 2019

The Employees: The employees, specially the sales persons are the foot soldiers of any establishment. It is imperative to see whether they have genuine interest in the gadgets and equipment or not. Staged enthusiasm can’t be feigned for long. A novice customer may want to know the intricate detail and operations of a ski board or mountaineering gears

SPORTZ BUSINESS INSIGHT | VOL 01 | ISSUE 05

or a high-end bike. A well-informed sales person is a treasure for any retail stores. Many times, employees themselves can’t buy the product they are selling. It creates an atmosphere of unhealthy attitude that is not pleasant for the customers. When they walk into a store and see a grumpy face that is an immediate red flag. A satisfied employee will assure satisfied customers. Engaging: Stores need to inspire their consumers. Create a vibrant and playful ambience where people would like to stay for long. Try to build a network of communities which revolve around the store. Create a place where people can exchange their knowledge on latest sports gears or protein powder. As notable author and business strategist Simon Sienk said, “People don’t buy what you make, they buy why you do.” Nike Inc has built stores that are

RETAIL

specialized on sports like basketball and soccer where buyers can hang out. That strategy turned out to be very fruitful. The athletic crowd translated to extra sales at a time when America’s shopping malls are going through existential crisis. The basketball-specific stores of Nike are called ‘House of Hoops’. Designing: We started looking at the aspect of designing to boost sales not too long ago. But it has been scientifically proven certain color, smell, texture, music have a significant role to play when a customer is making a decision on a product. For example, in 90% of the retail stores in America, after entering into a store, customers took a right turn after stepping into the ‘decompression zone’. That zone represents the façade of any store. That is where the customer decides whether the store is within their capacity. After making that decision, they turn to a wall which is called a power wall. It is important to note that the attention of the customer on power wall will be inquisitive. It is vital that the store display their best products on that wall. And how they are displaying is also important. Make sure, there is enough space at the store that will allow the visitor to move freely and explore. In a congested room, the pleasantness can be sullied which is not favorable for a good customer experience. Technology: This is something both the online and offline shops can agree on. Investment in digitization is indispensable now. And they are lucrative in the long run. Intersport (an international sports goods retailer) customers in Berlin can get a second opinion from Alexa installed by the store. According to a recent survey, 63% of small businesses are facing hurdles because of challenges regarding digitalization. Again, Nike defeated other competitors in this regard. Mark Quinn from Legett and Plank shared an interesting story on this. He went to a Nike store to buy a pair of trainers. “The sales staff wouldn’t let me buy a pair of shoes unless I got on a treadmill. They taped my running style and explained what type of shoes would be best for me, based on my running tendencies. They played the video back for me, explaining how my

foot fell on the treadmill and how that one movement translated to a certain kind of support. I was hooked into buying shoes- and come back-because they have taken the time to educate me.” French retailer, Decathlon is renowned for their award-winning customer service. New cutting edge technology is behind their impeccable service. Since the May of 2017, the sports goods company is useing virtual reality to demonstrate Quechua tents in fifteen or so French stores. Wearing a headset, customer can view every last detail of the tent in imaginary situations and compare models. By this way not only customer experiences fun ride at the store, they get intrigued about the product and keep coming back for more.

Puma, another sports retail giant introduced Kronos in 2009 to enhance and improve their customer service. They deployed application for sales and labor budgeting, optimized scheduling, time and attendance, absence management and workforce analytics across all US locations. The system is also used to develop additional processes, optimize workforce alignment to customer demand, simplify compliance and improve store productivity. Technology is inevitable to take place. Humans are determined to not give up their place. We are slowly approaching a watershed moment where the stores of the future will be able to answer a lot of question about our civilization.

Decathlon tops indian sports goods market

40 MAY 2019

Empowered by unique operation model, the French sports goods retailers announced themselves as the largest sportswear leader of India in FY 2018. According to the data published in an English news website Economic Times, Decathlon made a profit of 33.8 lakhs and revenue of 1,728 after Puma announced itself as the market leader two months ago. The company witnessed a catapulting in profit after it faced a loss of 53.1 crore. Dotted with humongous 70 stores around the country, Decathlon sold only private-labelled products at a price 30%-40% lower than its global and domestic competitors. Industry experts are attributing its diverse approach as the cause of its success. As the cultural wave in sports transcending the boundary of Cricket, a strong enthusiasm for Kabbadi, soccer, Volleyball and hockey is growing. Tapping this unconventional sportswear market gave Decathlon a wider presence. Cricketers for a long time exercised an unyielding domination in brand endorsements. Decathlon gave exposure budding sportspersons like Badminton players Saina Nehwal and PV Sindhu and athletes Hima Das and Swapna

SPORTZ BUSINESS INSIGHT | VOL 01 | ISSUE 05

Barman. Explaining the operational model of Decathlon, Alexander Goransson, consultant at Euromonitor International explains, “Decathlon has a lower-end positioning and targets consumers who see value for-money as important than brand-image. In doing so, it appeals to the wide range of age groups, and more to participants in sporting and outdoor activities, as opposed to consumers buying sportswear as fashion statement.” Another reason behind the lower price of Decathlon is controlling every aspect of its operation such as pricing, designing and distribution. The company follows a tactics of in-house manufacturing and outsourcing stocks to its shelves. Its German competitor Puma reacted at this market development saying, “We have a strong partnership with Decathlon in Europe, where we sell our products through their stores. Being a brand that supplies to multiple channels of sales in India, a significant part of our revenue is largely wholesale. So, our revenue is channel sales, rather than end customer sale, which is the case with a retailer.”, said Abhishek Ganguly, Managing director at Puma India.

REEBOK LAUNCHES FIT INDIA SURVEY 2.0 India has witnessed a fitness revolution, with FitGen opting for healthier lifestyles by not just experimenting with their fitness regimes, but also keeping a close tab on their nutrition intake. With the objective of taking its philosophy ‘Fitness is Life’ to Gen Z, Reebok India conducted the country’s first ever fitness survey – Fit India Survey in 2017 to reveal India’s fitness quotient. This year, on the occasion of World Health Day, Reebok launched Fit India Survey 2.0 to trace India’s fitness journey over the past two years. And much to the disappointment of skeptics, numbers from the second edition of the survey prove that millennials are increasingly opting towards a healthier lifestyle, with 95% respondents indulging in atleast one fitness activity – running, jogging or walking. Over 2200 men and women, between the age group of 18-35 years, were surveyed across the top 9 cities of India – Delhi-

NCR, Mumbai, Bangalore, Kolkata, Pune, Hyderabad, Chennai, Ahmedabad and Chandigarh – as part of Fit India Survey 2.0 and among all Kolkata scores the highest FitScore (combination of number of fitness activities participated in, frequency of working out & nutritional awareness) of 9.00.While Kolkata is closely followed by Delhi-NCR with a FitScore of 7.99, Pune on the other hand dropped from number one position in 2017 to the 8th on this year’s list with a low FitScore of 5.73.While Kolkata was recently in news for 5% of the city’s population being overweight, the survey shows that the younger generation in the city is much more conscious about adopting a healthier lifestyle and is making better fitness choices. 61% respondents

from the city prefer unconventional fitness activities like CrossFit, Kick-boxing, MMA and Combat training as part of their fitness regime.Discussing the Fit India Survey 2.0 results, Mr. Sunil Gupta, Brand Director, Reebok India said, “We at Reebok know that through fitness, and through movement, people will benefit. It is exciting for us to see how India is working harder (and smarter) to increase its fitness quotient, and for us to be an integral part of that journey. We are committed to helping people become the best version of themselves, and findings from this year’s survey make us believe that we are headed in the right direction.”Tapping the fitness pulse of Indians, the Fit India survey decodes interesting findings ranging from fitness activities pursued, sources of fitness knowledge, impact of social media, purchasing habits, nutritional requirements, growing athleisure trends and more.

The company submitted a trademark and service application to the United States Patent and Trademark Office. The application can be seen in their website filed on 19th of April. Josh Gerben, a trademark attorney of Garben Law Firm, first gave away the possibility of Nike trying to establish its own Nike coin. He revealed the trademark

application on Twitter and posted his own analysis with it. He later gave a statement

to Coingape saying, “It seems like Nike is planning to build out a software platform (such as an app). My guess is it is starting some sort of reward program where the coins can be used for the purchase of Nike products.” Nike is considered as a pioneer when it comes to embracing cutting-edge technology. They are pushing their mobile application as an online touchpoint for sales. Earlier this year, they brought their self-lacing HyperAdapt trainers model which is also rechargeable. Besides launching its crytocurrency, Nike is trying to create cryptocurrency software, hardware wallets and mobile apps for providing access to crypto-collectible, crypto-art and application tokens.
