SPORTS AND ACTIVITIES DIRECTORY WESTON (954) 993-0144 Office
620 Carrington Dr. Weston, FL 33326 www.sportsandactivities.com
Dear Readers,
As the summer sun begins to set and the days grow shorter, I find myself reflecting on the wonderful memories we’ve shared during these warm months with our families. From community picnics to joyful gatherings and family vacations, the spirit of togetherness has been truly heartwarming. As we bid farewell to summer, I write to you with great excitement about the new school year and the fantastic opportunities it has to offer.
Our schools are gearing up for an incredible academic journey, filled with knowledge, growth, and friendships. Check out our Directory for after-school activities and sports as registration is now open. Whether your child is interested in arts and crafts, robotics, or sports like soccer, basketball, or baseball, we have a diverse range of options that cater to every child’s passion and interest.
We invite parents and community members to register to volunteer at their schools. Volunteering not only allows you to actively participate in your child’s education but it also contributes to the development of a strong and supportive community. Your time and expertise can make a profound impact on the lives of our students, and we welcome your involvement with open arms.
If you feel anxious about your kids’ First Day at School, you will find a helpful article in our School Section entitled “Empowering Resilience: A Parent’s Guide to Nurturing Empathy and Coping Skills for Children Returning to School!”. As we embark on this new chapter, let us remember the importance of unity and compassion. Our community’s strength lies in our collective efforts to uplift and empower one another. Together, we can create a safe and inspiring space for our children to thrive, learn, and make lasting memories.
I extend my warmest wishes to all students, parents, and educators for a fantastic and successful new school year. May it be filled with joy, curiosity, and a genuine passion for learning. Let’s embrace the challenges with a positive spirit and celebrate every achievement, big or small, as a step toward a brighter future.
Thank you for being an integral part of our community. Your support and dedication are invaluable, and together, we will make this year one to remember. With much excitement help me Welcome to the Sports and Activities Team to Valeria Nierth and Carlo Tamayo, both are residents of Weston and very involved in our community, say “Hi” when you see them around!
My best to you, Isabel Magette
Dear Readers,
NAVIGATING BACK TO SCHOOL: As the Mayor of this vibrant and diverse community, I cannot help but feel a sense of excitement and anticipation as we prepare for the upcoming school year. Back-to-school season is more than just a time of new backpacks and sneakers; it’s a time of year that symbolizes growth, unity - and hope for the future. As parents, we invest in a home in Weston to provide our children with a great education in a safe a nurturing environment. Education is the bedrock of any thriving community, and our schools are the engines that drive progress and prosperity. It is our collective responsibility as parents, educators, and public servants to provide our children with the best possible tools and resources to flourish.
SAFETY: Ensuring the safety of students in Weston, is without a doubt, our top priority. We collaborate closely with school administrators and the City of Weston, with a contribution from the School Board of Broward County, we fund Broward Sheriff’s Office School Resource Officers and Guardians in the Public schools located in Weston. Cypress Bay High School - Two School Resource Officers and one Guardian. Tequesta Trace Middle School - One School Resource Officer and one Guardian. Falcon Cove Middle School - One School Resource Officer and one Guardian. There is one School Resource Officer at every one of the six elementary schools in the City and the Charter school. School Crossing Guards: 33 crossing locations with 74 school crossing guard posts are covered each day in the City of Weston.
Please give a wave and a smile to one of the many, many dedicated School Crossing Guards assisting children each day, rain, or shine.
WELL-ROUNDED EDUCATION: A well-rounded education goes beyond textbooks; it includes art, music, sports, and extracurricular activities that allow our students to explore their passions and discover their unique talents. As Mayor, I am steadfast in my dedication to supporting our schools, teachers, and families in ensuring a safe and enriching learning experience. In this way, we empower our young minds to thrive and become the leaders of tomorrow. The City welcomes elementary students to the ‘I Led the Pledge’ Program at City Commission Meetings, and high school students to apply to the ‘Weston University Program’ which is civics education mainly about local government, particularly the City of Weston. I, my colleagues, and staff read books in our schools, our parks are shared with many of the schools so that they have an outdoor playground and athletic facilities, and our parks staff maintains and lines the Cypress Bay High School football field.
PARENT/GUARDIAN INVOLVEMENT: Your involvement in your child’s education makes all the difference. I encourage parents to engage with their children’s teachers, attend school events, and actively participate in Parent-Teacher Associations. By working together with educators, you become invested in and integral to your child’s academic journey. While there, be sure to thank the teachers! They play an indispensable role in the lives of our children and in shaping the minds of the next generation.
As we embrace the excitement of welcoming our students back to school. Together, we will build a future that is filled with endless possibilities.
All my best,
Margaret ‘Peggy’ Brown The City of Weston MayorHOMETOWN BUSINESSES & SERVICES

As the back-to-school season approaches, children may experience a mixture of emotions ranging from excitement to anxiety. The transition from a relaxed summer to the structured school environment can be challenging for young minds. As parents, it is crucial to provide the necessary support to help children adapt seamlessly. By fostering empathy through communication and teaching appropriate coping skills, parents can empower their children to navigate the school environment with confidence and emotional resilience.
Cultivating Empathy through Communication: Empathy is the foundation of meaningful relationships and emotional intelligence. By showing empathy, parents can create a supportive and understanding environment for their children to express their concerns and fears about going back to school.
Actively Listen and Validate Emotions: When children express their fears or anxieties about returning to school, it is essential to lend them a compassionate ear. Actively listen to their concerns without judgment and acknowledge their feelings. Validating their emotions helps them feel understood and less alone in their struggles. Respond to your child’s expressions of emotion with reflective responses, such as “I can see that you feel worried about making new friends,” or “It sounds like you’re looking forward to seeing your old friends again.” This shows them that you truly understand their emotions.
Encourage Open Dialogue: Create a safe space for open dialogue about their concerns, hopes, and aspirations for the new school year. Initiate conversations and ask open-ended questions to encourage them to express themselves freely. Be patient and avoid interrupting; let them know you are there to support them. Here are a few questions you can ask:
1. Are there any specific challenges you think you might face at school?
2. How can I support you with them?
3. Is there anything you’d like to achieve or improve upon this year?
4. What do you think will be different about this school year compared to the previous one?
5. How do you plan to manage your time and stay organized with schoolwork?
Share Your Own Experiences: Recounting your own experiences of going back to school as a child can build a sense of connection and reassurance. Highlight both positive and challenging moments you faced and how you coped with them. This can inspire children to see that their emotions are normal and that they too can overcome obstacles.
Teaching Appropriate Coping Skills
Deep Breathing and Mindfulness: Help your children practice deep breathing exercises and mindfulness techniques. These techniques can help reduce anxiety and stress by bringing their attention to the present moment. Encourage them to take deep breaths whenever they feel overwhelmed or nervous. You can let your child know about Balloon Breaths and the Five Senses Check-In!
• Balloon Breaths Steps:
1. Have your child imagine their belly is a balloon.
2. Inhale deeply through the nose, allowing the belly to expand like a balloon filling with air.
3. Exhale slowly through the mouth, imagining the balloon deflating.
4. Repeat this exercise several times, focusing on the rise and fall of the imaginary balloon.
• Five Senses Check-In:
1. Ask your child to take a moment to notice five things they can see, four things they can touch, three things they can hear, two things they can smell, and one thing they can taste.
2. This exercise helps them ground themselves in the present moment and heighten their awareness of their senses.
Problem-Solving Strategies: Teach your children effective problemsolving skills, as this will help them tackle challenges they may encounter at school. Guide them through the process of identifying the issue, brainstorming solutions, and evaluating the best course of action. This skill empowers children to take charge of their problems and find constructive solutions.
Positive Self-Talk: Foster a positive mindset by encouraging positive selftalk. Teach your children to challenge negative thoughts and replace them with more optimistic and empowering ones. This shift in perspective can boost their confidence and self-esteem, making them better equipped to face school-related stressors.
Organizational and Time Management Skills: Help your children develop strong organizational and time management skills. Teach them to use tools like planners or digital calendars to keep track of assignments, tests, and extracurricular activities. These skills enable them to stay on top of their responsibilities and reduce the stress caused by last-minute rushes.
The transition back to school can be a time of both excitement and anxiety for children. As parents, supporting our children through this process is vital for their emotional well-being and academic success. By cultivating empathy through effective communication, we can create an environment where children feel safe expressing their emotions and concerns. Furthermore, teaching appropriate coping skills empowers them to handle the challenges they may encounter in school.
As the new academic year dawns, let us remember that our support and guidance play a pivotal role in shaping our children’s emotional resilience. By fostering empathy and imparting coping skills, we equip them with valuable tools that will serve them not only in the school environment but throughout their lives. Together, let us ensure that this school year is marked by growth, resilience, and a deep connection between parents and their children.

As I enter my 4th year as the Principal of Tequesta Trace Middle School, I am humbled to be leading such an amazing school that has a long-standing tradition of excellence. For the 23-24 school year we will continue with our block scheduling that we initiated last year. We will be keeping our extensive list of electives, such as forensic science, marine science, robotics, chess, art, drama, band, etc. We are also adding home economics and nutrition as requested by our students. We look forward to students participating and exploring these courses.
Last year in academics, we focused on creating support classes in the areas of Math, English Language Arts and Science. As a school, we want to make sure every student is College and Career Ready. In keeping with this focus, we want our students to be prepared for the academic rigor they will see in high school. Students usually take Algebra in 8th or 9th grade. Algebra gives us the foundation we need to comprehend certain problems that require more thinking. It also provides a building block for future math classes and helps with non-math related classes. Tequesta’s approach is to offer Algebra to 8th grade students meeting the proper previous year’s FSA scores. We then offer additional math help for students needing extra time to master the Algebra content. We believe by accomplishing this, our children have the best opportunity for future success. We do understand that there is no “one size fits all” when it comes to students taking Algebra in 8th grade. We encourage every family to be involved in
making that determination for their child. Most importantly, we want to foster a love for math and help students excel.
We remain committed to building positive relationships with students, teachers, and parents. We have our upcoming 6th grade Open House August 31st at 6PM. Our 7th and 8th grade Open House for parents will be held on September 7th at 6PM. Our PTA is dedicated to supporting our school and I ask that every parent join PTA! Our amazing PTA sponsors several school events including our welcome back breakfast for teachers, the 6th grade back to school dance and Cougar Fun Field Day. Even if you cannot give of your time, the $15 membership fee helps support our students, teachers, and staff. Please go to https://ttmspta.memberhub.com/store/items/34344
In closing, I would like to welcome our 6th grade students and parents. We are very excited you are joining the Cougar family. Our team of administrators has over 80 years of experience welcoming students to middle school and anticipate your arrival. To our 7th graders, we look forward to welcoming you back and continuing to see you grow. Finally, to our 8th graders, this is our last year together so let’s make it the best year! We have many events planned for you, such as the 8th grade dance, 8th grade Gradventure and 8th grade awards ceremony. We are in the final stages of planning the 8th grade Washington, D.C./New York City field trip! Thank you to all of families and may God bless you as we go into a new school year.
This summer, Sagemont Preparatory School launched its first annual summer conservatory of the arts! The amazing artists in the summer conservatory program explored a wide array of opportunities in the arts, including theatre production, sculpture, aerial silks, movement, vocal, and so much more! At the conclusion of the school’s first summer conservatory, parents and students alike commented that they wished the program would be extended throughout the summer and year-long. Well, Sagemont Prep has listened to the community, and this September, the preparatory school will open its year-long conservatory program to the community! In their upcoming launch of the daily conservatory, budding and experienced artists alike can engage in and explore offerings that include Piano Lab, Fine Arts, Sculpture, Photography, Theatre Production, Jewelry Construction, Ballroom Dance, Music for Little Mozarts, Violin, Guitar and Ceramics. The Conservatory of the Arts at Sagemont Prep will also offer private lessons in the arts.
Sagemont Prep Summer Conservatory families were blown away by the skill level and teaching of the faculty.
•“My child was able to build confidence and let barriers down to grow.”
•“We could not pick a favorite part because the whole experience was fabulous! The teachers went above and beyond in each of the arts. The summer conservatory was an incredible experience, from art to music, to theater, and to the level of instruction was incredible.”
•“The summer conservatory camp at Sagemont Prep is incredible. The instructors are amazing. Our daughter grew in confidence and as an artist, musician, and performer. It was a great way to experience many things on a personal level, and yet it was very fun as well.”
Join Sagemont Prep in September for the opening of the year-long conservatory that will serve the community. Sagemont Prep’s 2023 program will run from September 5th-November 17th. Classes will be offered at both of the school’s campuses in Weston.
What makes Sagemont Preparatory School unique?

TUTORING SERVICES
KUMON MATH AND READING CENTER
Weston-Saddle Club Road. Kumon is the best learning program ever developed, and very different from your child’s regular school experience because of 4 pillars that guide us with each student: 1. individually designed learning; 2. learning challenges that advance exactly in line with your student’s timing; 3. learning by doing, not listening; 4. instructors who support, students who think. Consider how different these pillars are from the passive experience your child has in a class of 30 students. Your child’s special gifts and talents, and even your child’s individual needs, can get lost in a class of 30. But not at Kumon!! That’s why Kumon is cherished in almost 60 countries. And why it consistently generates accelerated learning for students from any starting point, to beyond class-level! The Kumon Math Program is a comprehensive curriculum that develops the necessary skills to help children progress from counting through calculus. The Kumon Reading Program begins with basic phonics and progresses all the way through advanced reading comprehension. Please stop by and visit us! Schedule a free, no-obligation evaluation. Learn With Peers: Improving the Community One Student at a Time
Learn With Peers is a student-led nonprofit organization in Broward dedicated to improving academic performance at no charge and providing a platform for high school students to volunteer.
Aadish Kachhal, a current junior at Cypress Bay High School, founded the 501(c)(3) nonprofit in 2021. “Witnessing the need for structured support during the pandemic gave me the idea to start this organization,” Kachhal said. He launched two nationwide programs: one-on-one tutoring and intensive summer workshops.
In one-on-one tutoring, each hand-selected volunteer is paired with a K-12 student during the school year to complete homework and assignments, study for tests and review difficult concepts. Since 2021, the nonprofit’s team of 70 tutors has provided academic support to approximately 150 students.
“My son always earned a ‘B’ in math each quarter,” a Falcon Cove parent said. “But after beginning tutoring with Learn With Peers, he earned an ‘A’ each quarter in math this year, and he didn’t struggle completing his math assignments on his own.”
In addition, the organization works to conduct summer workshops for the community on over a dozen of academic and extracurricular oriented topics ranging from Spanish 1 to Java Coding. The instructors use their personal experiences and familiarity with the curriculum
to prepare students for the school year. The workshop team has successfully taught 75 students in the summer of 2022 and doubled for 150 students in 2023.
“The sessions are well organized and presented thoroughly. All the information and slides presented during the class are readily accessible afterwards,” one Broward County 8th-grade student said.
In order to make these programs successful, the nonprofit continues to build a strong team of tutors and instructors. Volunteers can work around their schedules, keeping previous commitments to school.
Learn With Peers volunteer Harshita Chintapudi said, “I have an opportunity to show noticeable progress in my tutee’s academic performance during the school year and become a leader by sharing my passions in Biology and Chemistry over the summer.”
The organization hopes to expand its impact further by reaching out to several schools, working with a broader range of volunteers and building stronger connections with the community. “Learn With Peers is an initiative built by students for students,” Kachhal said.
“I appreciate all the time and effort that your tutors give to the students. Tutors are well organized, have the knowledge and are responsible,” a Cypress Bay parent said.

Welcome to the 2023-24 school year! This is my 11th year at Gator Run and I have no doubt that this upcoming year will be filled with growth, learning, and unforgettable experiences for everyone.
This year, we are excited to introduce a new school ethos that will shape our journey throughout this academic year and beyond: Gator CULTURE. This powerful acronym represents the values and principles that we wish to establish and nurture within our school community - Collaboration, Unity, Lifelong Learning, Trust, Uniqueness, Responsibility, and Equity.
Collaboration: We strongly believe that genuine success is attained when individuals collaborate and work as a team, pooling their diverse strengths to conquer challenges and accomplish extraordinary feats collectively. Supporting each other, exchanging ideas, and celebrating achievements will foster growth and harmony as we learn together.
Unity: Gator Run is made up of individuals from many different backgrounds and experiences. Yet, we all come together as one inclusive school community. Let’s embrace our diversity and promote a sense of belonging for every student and family.
Lifelong Learning: Education is not bound to the walls of a school. We encourage all members of our school community to adopt the spirit of lifelong
