Some of your work reminds me of Frida Kahlo, in its intensity of seemingly female experiences. Is this coincidence or do gender issues impact your work--and how?
I was raised by my father in an all male household and, I think, for that reason women have always been tremendously fascinating to me. I spent the greater part of my life trying to figure out what makes women so different and magical . I know that the fascination with them is what has made me create so many fantastic females in my art. In a way, even though I am a woman, I have always kind of felt like an impostor. Like a tomboy dressed up for a ball. 18
