Somewhere in the Darkness By Walter Dean Myers Somewhere in the Darkness is about a troubled high school boy named Jimmy. Jimmy is living alone with his mother when his jailbird father, Clay meets him for the first time since Jimmy was a baby. Clay is ashamed of what Jimmy thinks of him so he tries to renew his identity by taking Jimmy on a cross country trip to his childhood town. Good qualities are rare in this confusing book. One good quality is that Walter Dean Myers keeps the book thrilling through each chapter. I believe that he likes to leave you at the end of each chapter wondering what will happen next. I think that if you want to have the people read your book then you need to get people interested, exactly what Walter Dean Myers does. There are many revisions I would make in this piece. I think that Somewhere in the Darkness is very confusing. I believe that he is writing a story about his life. But, he doesn’t fully explain what the book is about so you don’t know what is happening. For example, when Clay comes to the house and wants to bring Jimmy cross country, you don’t know why. So throughout the whole book you are wondering why Clay is bringing Jimmy cross country. Walter needs to explain his writing to the readers.
Sunrise Over Fallujah By Walter Dean Myers This book is about an army recruit from Harlem named Robin Perrs that is sent to Falujah, Iraq. He knows nothing about war besides letter he got from his Uncle in Vietnam. He tag teams with his friends to stay alive in the war. A good quality in this book is that the reader makes the book emotional. It is hard to make people feel sad without any physical change. Walter Dean Myers can make you feel sadness
through mental thoughts. You have to have good language that keeps the reader hooked. You have to have good describing details so the reader can imagine that they are in the book Bad qualities in this book are that Walter Dean Myers facts and ideas in the book are a bit unrealistic. For example, whenever Robin goes out for a drive or basically does anything he gets shot at. Just because he is in Iraq doesn’t mean there is a terrorists around every corner. Walter Dean Myers needs to make his book based on fact rather than made up stuff that tries to get you interested in the book.
Fallen Angel By Walter Dean Myers Richie Perry went to Vietnam because of a paperwork screwup. But now that he’s in Vietnam, he’s almost constantly being shot at by the “Congs”. Now all he wants to do is get out of there before he’s blown to bits. “This guttwisting Vietnam War novel bears uncharted ground”. The Booklist reviewing one of the best war stories of all time. After reading this book I thought I was Richie Perry getting artillery dropped 20 feet away from me. Walter Dean Myers does an amazing job in the book of using details in a way that makes it seem extremely realistic. In my opinion, there aren’t any bad qualities in this book. Walter Dean Myers does everything with an A+ job in Fallen Angels. I believe that he got his _____ from his brother who DIA in Vietnam. I think this because he put in a note to decode the book to his brother in the start of the book . I also believe that he’s visiting game camps because his is able to write about what the guys are saying very casually and it seems like they are having an army conversation and saying.
