Dad of Lodge 76, Wichita Falls member becomes global sensation for 100th birthday By Patrick Johnston Wichita Falls Times Record News originally published on Feb. 22, 2019 with title “What is the greatest gift you can give a Texas WWII vet for his 100th birthday?” For a quiet, hardworking son of immigrant parents, Joe Cuba has felt like a little bit of a local celebrity. His oldest daughter Beverly Cuba felt like she wasn’t doing enough to celebrate the centennial birthday of her father, a World War II veteran. A simple idea from staff at Joe’s senior living center – Brookdale Midwestern – has turned into far more than she could have ever imagined. Stephanie

Veitenheimer, sales manager for Brookdale Midwestern, posted a quick photo of Joe with a sign with what seemed at the time like a daunting request. She wanted 100 birthday cards for Joe’s 100th birthday on March 2, 2019. “I just made a quick sign, took a photo with him holding it, and posted it on Facebook Tuesday afternoon, February 19 at 4,” Veitenheimer said. “And it took off.” Ever since that post on her personal Facebook page, the family and staff have been overwhelmed by the response. “We’ve had people all over the United States calling us to ask if it’s a Continued on Page 20.

his story about Charles Plumb, a United States jet fighter pilot in Vietnam, proves the importance of teamwork. Plumb had completed 75 combat missions when he was shot down. He was ejected and parachuted into enemy hands, where he spent six years in a Vietnamese prison. One day, a man came up to him and said, “You’re Plumb! You flew jet fighters in Vietnam from the aircraft carrier Kitty Hawk. You were shot down!” Plumb was confused and asked how the man knew about that. “I packed your parachute,” the man replied. The man then shook his hand and said, “I guess it worked!” Plumb assured him it had and said, “If your chute hadn’t worked, I wouldn’t be here today.” Plumb thought a lot about that man who held the fate of someone he did not even know, in his hands. He kept pondering how many times he might have seen the guy, and not even said anything because he was a fighter pilot and the stranger was a sailor. Mr. Plumb is now a motivational speaker telling this story to hundreds of people. After telling it, he always asks his audiences, “Who’s packing your parachute?” In our life, be it personal or work related, many people have a hand in

our parachutes. We all have people who provide what we need to make it through the day - our physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual parachutes. As we go through life, we need to acknowledge, thank, and recognize the people who pack our parachutes! It takes a lot of people to create a team! ofx!Dbnq!Ejsfdups Continued from Page 1. overwhelming. It’s not. Jeb has established a great foundation at Camp Kubena that I can build upon. With the ACA accreditation and clearly defined policies and procedures in place, our next phase — and this will be a collaborative effort — is determining what we can do to make Camp Kubena a better learning experience and a fun and memorable experience for everyone who has a part in the venture.” An Eagle Scout and Eagle Scout Mentor, Clift brings with him a world of life experiences to draw upon in his new role as Director of Camp Kubena. Clift’s work history includes a sixyear stint with the Boy Scouts of America in the Florida Keys where he led Scouts on boating, snorkeling, fishing, marine life identification, and ecology aboard a 40-foot sailing vessel. This led to a position as Senior Marine Outreach Coordinator with the National Parks Conservation Association where he served for six years researching, designing, and implementing educational courses and teaching others about good stewardship in our National Parks. From Florida, Clift trekked to Galveston where he was the BaySmart Director for Sea Scout Base Galveston where his duties included developing and implementing the BaySmart Education programs focusing primarily on marine ecosystems and wildlife and managing the Boy Scout summer program. “Rob gets it,” says Owen McCulloch, National Venturing Director for the Boy Scouts of America who worked closely with Clift during his assignments in Florida and Galveston. “Rob was responsible for heading up and developing some great and purposeful programs and providing a wonderful experience for everyone involved.” More recently, Clift served as the Assistant Camp Director for Camp Thunderbird in Bemidji, Minnesota, and as the Camp Manager of Lake Merwin Campers Hideaway in Amboy, Washington. “Rob’s skill in all areas of camp operations, public communications, including developing media content, public speaking, and building strong relationships with a wide variety of people and organizations should be a tremendous asset in his new role with SPJST,” says President Vanicek. “We expect great things from Mr. Clift in terms of developing both our summer program and ‘off-season programming’ at Camp

Summer will be here before you know it . . . and that comes SPJST Summer Camp! The vision for Camp Kubena is to inspire individuals to develop a personal relationship with the outdoors and become responsible, active members of the community. The mission of Camp Kubena is to provide a caring environment in which children, teens, and adults can have a meaningful, educational experience in the outdoors. For registration information, please visit spjst.org. To learn more about the camp itself, check out campkubena.com.

Kubena.” An accomplished musician — drums, piano, and accordion — Clift studied percussion at Southeastern Oklahoma State University and music at the University of Ghana in Accra, Ghana. “It’s great being back in Texas,” says Clift, whose father is a past John Deere dealer and whose mother was an agent for State Farm Insurance. “Texas is my home, and I want to make a positive impact on Camp Kubena. “I’ve learned a lot about the SPJST Youth Program in a short amount of time,” Clift says. “I look forward to getting to know and connecting with the youth program’s front line — the District Youth Counselors and youth leaders — when they meet for their annual workshop in Temple on March 23.” Youth Leaders Workshop If you’re a lodge youth leader or assistant and haven’t registered to attend the March 23 Youth Leaders Workshop, please contact State Fraternal Director Frank Horak and ask to be put on the list. Spouses are also invited to attend. Too, lodges without youth clubs are encouraged to send a representative to this annual day-long session which profiles the many and varied aspects of the SPJST Youth Program, including SPJST Summer Camp.

Register Now for SPJST Summer Camp SPJST recognizes the opportunity that it has to make a positive difference in the lives of its young people — and others — by committing itself through its fraternal programming to developing a greater appreciation, understanding, and involvement with the natural world. Located in northern Fayette County, Camp Kubena honors the memory and pioneering spirit of one of

SPJST’s founding fathers and a Fayette County native, J.R. Kubena. The vision for Camp Kubena is to inspire individuals to develop a personal relationship with the outdoors and become responsible, active members of the community. The mission of Camp Kubena is to provide a caring environment in which children, teens, and adults can have a meaningful, educational experience in the outdoors. Check out campkubena.com for more information! If your child has completed kindergarten, is a current youth club member, and has made seven out of 12 meetings, he or she will be eligible to attend camp at no charge. Youth who attend lodges with no youth club can attend seven adult meetings and qualify to attend camp at no charge. The lodge secretary will need to provide the SPJST Home Office with copies of the membership roster of each meeting the youth attended. Youth who have not made at least seven meetings may attend camp at the prorated rate of $35 per meeting missed. The rate for attending camp with no meeting credits is $250. Youth can make up a meeting by attending another local youth club. All campers must submit an online application to the State Fraternal Director no later than June 1. This application is available on the spjst.org website. Please see your District Youth Counselor or youth leader if you have questions or need additional information. —SPJST—

Fraternal News =

State Fraternal Director shares March updates National Nutrition Month Everyone deals with schedules, jobs, social lives and other things that some people believe don’t allow them the time to live their healthiest life. But the belief that we don’t have time for health is simply not valid; everyone can live a healthy life when they break it down meal by meal, day by day, choice by choice. So, to inspire you to live a more vibrant life each day, here are some nutritionist approved tips you can start to work into your own routines today. Practicing them daily will create a healthier (and happier) you in no time! 1. Eat More Plants Sounds pretty simple, right? That’s because it actually is. When you choose to eat more plants at each meal, you crowd out the unhealthier foods like dairy, meat, eggs, processed foods, fast food, pre-made meals and stuff that really provides your body with nothing but inflammatory, dense sources of calories. Remember, calories equal energy. Your body needs calories to provide you with energy, so be sure you choose quality calories versus just focusing on the number of calories a food has. 2. Be Label Smart Generally speaking, if an item has a label on it with more than five ingredients, you probably shouldn’t be eating it. The healthiest choice foods contain one ingredient or no label at all. For instance, fruits, vegetables, leafy greens, nuts, seeds, beans and legumes are all single food options that your body can use much better than a processed protein bar with 10 or more ingredients. Added sugars, fillers and preservatives, emulsifiers, and many animal-based ingredients can all make their way into foods that aren’t necessarily easy to spot. When you choose simple labels, you’re naturally choosing healthier foods. 3. Get Enough Sleep! Busy schedules, exciting nights out and stress can all keep you from getting the rest you need, but this comes with a huge price. Research has shown that even just 30 minutes less of sleep one or two nights a week can lead to weight gain, changes in insulin levels, and prevent quality mental focus the next day. Over time it can even lead to heart disease, type 2 diabetes and obesity. To keep your digestive organs, hormones, and your brain working like they should, your body has to have a reset. Think of sleeping just like working out – it works around the clock for you to improve all other areas of your life. Put it in your calendar just like you would a meeting and make it happen!

4. Eat a Fiber-Rich Breakfast Most people know they should eat breakfast – no news flash there – but what many people don’t consider is the importance of a fiber-packed breakfast. A piece of fruit is nice in the morning, but it’s not going to do much for you an hour later. Your body needs a good bit of calories, ample amounts of fiber, and a little protein to get it going and to keep you full. Fiber takes a longer time to digest and also stabilizes your blood sugar. If you have a hard time adjusting to more fiber, start out slow but make it a point to increase it daily. A green smoothie, oatmeal, or some fruit chopped into a bowl with some coconut yogurt, flax, chia seeds, and pumpkin seeds are all great options that might be easier on your stomach than large amounts of something harsher like wheat bran cereal. Increase your fiber a little each day and you’ll likely notice you feel more full during the morning while also having less severe blood sugar drops the rest of the day. This can keep your insulin levels healthy to prevent sugar binges or extreme fatigue. Fiberfilled breakfasts can even improve your weight since they change the way your metabolism functions over the course of the day. 5. Don’t Fall for Gimmicks Gimmicks like strict juice cleanses, completely avoiding food groups (like fat and carbs), going on a liquid diet like some celebrities do, or feeling the need to only eat one food for days on end (like bananas) are not healthy, balanced ways to take care of yourself. If you want to have a green juice or green smoothie, then be sure you’re still eating meals and consuming a variety of other foods too. Balanced eating promotes a healthy body. Period. Explore all your plant-based options so your body gets what it needs. As a result, your metabolism will stay fueled, your brain will function better, and you can learn how much of what specific foods make you feel full longer and fuel your activity levels best. Don’t forget that exercise is also important. Since we depend on food to provide us with calories for energy, we should put those calories to use. Get moving by taking a walk, going for a jog, doing some yoga or taking a class at your local gym. Workout at home? Get some kettlebells and lift those instead of weights. Pick up an active hobby like climbing or hiking. You get the drill. When you move, you improve your mental health, physical health, and your longevity at the same time. It’s a win-win! The event was held February 16 and was a huge success. Thank you to all who participated and to all the volunteers! There was some discussion on a partial remodel which was done to the bar work area. This work which included the purchase of a small refrigerator, an additional cash register, removal of a countertop peninsula, and repurposing cabinets, was done to help with the work flow. The new set up was tested out at the annual fundraiser and works beautifully! Under new business, there was some expense incurred in repairing a short circuit to the marquee and flag pole. There was also some discussion on the continued need to improve outdoor lighting. Estimates for these improvements will be brought to the next monthly meeting.

Czech, Slovak scholarships available at University of Pittsburgh SLI Dear Friends, I am writing to spread the word that University of Pittsburgh’s Summer Language Institute (SLI) at the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures has generous full and partial scholarships available for applicants to our Czech and Slovak language courses this summer. Our deadline for priority scholarship consideration was March 1, 2019, though we can still accept applications after that date. We have programs in Pittsburgh, Bratislava, Prague, and hybrid programs that begin in Pittsburgh and continue in Prague and Bratislava. As you may know, Pittsburgh is a city that takes great pride in its Slovak and Czech heritage and is a great locale to learn the languages! SLI accepts undergraduates, graduates, and highly-motivated non-affiliated learners. We have a combination of traditional students and adult learners. In some cases, we can accept high school students who demonstrate the requisite maturity and dedication to succeed in an intensive program. Our students come from all over the country for the learning opportunities, which include not only language training in all four modes (speaking, reading, listening, and writing), but also a rich

Část

program of extra-curricular activities including film screenings, lectures, ethnic picnics, and other community and cultural activities. Out-of-state students may study at SLI for fees equivalent to the in-state tuition rate. With SLI scholarships applied, our courses are one of the most affordable options out there for this kind of specialized training. Detailed information about our programs can be found on our website, www.sli.pitt.edu Please share this opportunity with anyone you know who is interested in learning Czech or Slovak. I hope our courses might be of interest to the members of your organization or their families and friends who may be interested in learning the beautiful Slovak or Czech languages in a friendly environment and in a city with a deep connection to Slovakia and Czechia! Thank you! All the very best, Kathleen Manukyan, Ph.D. Managing Director Summer Language Institute Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures University of Pittsburgh —SPJST—

March 10, 1948: The Strange Death of Jan Masaryk A mere two weeks after Stalin’s puppets took control of Czechoslovakia, foreign minister and national hero Jan Masaryk was found dead in the courtyard below his apartment. There was no suicide note nor hint of explanation beyond an enigmatic Bible verse. More than seven decades later, the who, why, and how remain a riddle that grows ever more intriguing. At 6:30 on the morning of March 10, 1948, the body of foreign minister Jan Masaryk was found lying in the cobbled courtyard below the window of his official flat in the palace, dressed only in his pajamas. Whether he jumped to his death or was pushed in one of Prague’s notorious defenestrations has never been conclusively established. He was 61 years old. Born in 1886, Jan Masaryk was the son of the great Tomáš Masaryk, academic philosopher and principal founder of Czechoslovakia as an independent nation after the First World War. Before the First World War, he lived in the USA and returned in 1913 and served in the Austro-Hungarian army

during the war. After the war, he joined diplomatic service and became a temporary ambassador to the USA. In 1925, he became ambassador to Britain. During the Second World War, he resigned from the ambassador function in protest of the occupation. In 1940, he became a Foreign Minister of the Government in exile. He remained the Foreign Minister even after the war and the communist coup until his death on March 10, 1948. Masaryk always hoped that Czechoslovakia could act as a bridge between the West and the Soviet Union, but

VĚSTNÍK Moscow wanted an empire not a bridge and the successful Communist coup of February 1948 was carried out under the supervision of the Soviet assistant foreign minister, Valentin Zorin, who was in Prague at the time. Three months after Jan Masaryk’s death, Beneš resigned and Gottwald introduced a Soviet-style constitution and suppressed all opposition. preface: https://quadrant.org.au/opinion/qed/2018/12/thedeath-and-mystery-of-jan-masaryk/ http://www.praguemorning.cz/march-10-1948-the-strangedeath-of-jan-masaryk-6eOqn3DcGJ

Joe’s 100th Birthday Continued from Page 1. legit post, what (military branch) he served in, and what he did,” Veitenheimer said. “It’s been just humbling to know that people want to help us celebrate his 100th.” Medical equipment companies have reached out to her to see if they could give Joe any medical equipment he might need for his birthday. Veitenheimer said she’s also had calls from Fox News, military organizations, and teachers asking how they could help Joe celebrate his milestone birthday. “Teachers have said their students are learning about the Greatest Generation and want to send cards to him. It’s just awesome,” she said. Joe was born March 2, 1919, to John and Rosie Cuba, a few months after World War I ended. “He came over when he was 16 as an indentured servant,” Beverly said of her grandfather. “He worked for two years in South Texas then came north after his time was up.” Growing up with immigrant parents from Czechoslovakia, Joe didn’t learn English until later in his childhood. “Daddy didn’t speak any English at home,” Beverly said. “He and his sisters – the first four children – spoke nothing but Czech. They had to learn English when they went to school.” Joe was the second of 12 children – six boys and six girls. “Boy, there was a mob of us,” he said of his siblings. “Some kind of team, I’ll tell you. There was a lot of us.” One of them passed away at four months old, but the rest have enjoyed a long life. His oldest sister passed away at 90, but eight are still living. Joe is the oldest living sibling at nearly 100, while his youngest brother Henry is 81.

They grew up on a farm in Megargel in Archer County, Texas, helping raise livestock and grow cotton and wheat. “We made a pretty good living. It wasn’t bad. Plenty to eat, as the saying goes,” Joe said of his childhood. “. . . People in the city had a harder time making it and having groceries. We always gave them something because we knew they were hungry and had families. It was rewarding. We didn’t have everything, but we had plenty of food to get by on.” As part of his farm work, Joe said he helped feed the livestock and worked the plow in the cotton fields. “That cotton field had to be clean, and dad wanted it clean. No weeds,” he said. “So I did, hopefully.” His parents instilled not only a work ethic in the children, but also a desire to help others, Joe said. A child of the Great Depression, Joe still recalls his mother always helping anyone who came asking for food. “People were hungry and I guess going from place-toplace. They’d walk two miles to our house to beg for food,” Joe said. “Of course, momma would never refuse them. She’d always cook something or have something to cook. . . . She always gave them some food.” As the United States got pulled into World War II, the Cuba family volunteered to do their individual part also. “A lot of people, during the war, went to work for the war efforts,” Joe said. “We decided we’d do something to help out, too. We went to California and worked there. We made it okay, and hopefully, helped out some.” Before going off to war with the United States Army Air Force, Joe married the love of his life, Nida, on August 3, 1943. Due to the government rationing most commodities, Beverly said her parents had no family or friends at their wedding in Fort Worth, and her mother, Nida, was unable to wear nylon stockings. “I remember when they got married, she said she got a used iron to iron cloth-

VĚSTNÍK ing with,” Beverly recalled being told. “She said she was so happy with that iron because you couldn’t get things like that very much.” During his time in the military, Joe learned how to work on aircraft in California. “The other work I had to do was light compared to farming,” he said. “If they told me to do something, I done it without any problem. Sure it was hard work, but there wasn’t any other way to do it.” Once he was done training for the day though, he’d take Nida out dancing to many of the big bands – Tommy Dorsey, Benny Goodman, and the likes. “My wife loved to dance so we danced – I liked it, too, so I didn’t mind,” he laughed. “Every dance, almost, we made and enjoyed it. That was a big thing in our lives.” When it was time to head to Guam, Beverly said her mother came back to live with family in Wichita Falls while her father was sent to Seattle to begin the long voyage on an “iron ship,” as she remembers her dad calling it. “He said it was horrible because it took 33 days to get to Guam,” she said. “He said he’ll never eat a sardine again or powdered milk or eggs.” Joe served his country from 1943 to 1945, battling in the Pacific Theater. “We had some activity, but I was fortunate and came out fine,” Joe said of his service in the military. “Of course, it was no fun to be shot at but that was war, and I tried to dodge (the gunfire) as best I could and didn’t get wounded too bad.” Joe wasn’t the only sibling to serve his country, though. Beverly said three of her uncles also joined the military. After the war was over, Joe returned with his wife to the Wichita Falls area, opening a Texaco station and Firestone store in Seymour, Texas. The Cubas had three children – Beverly, Lee, and Elaine – each about five years apart. Beverly said her father owned the shops for about 20 years be-

Wednesday, March 6, 2019 fore moving back to Wichita Falls, where he worked for Sears until he retired. Even as they each retired, Joe and his siblings continue to try to see each other whenever possible, whether for milestone anniversaries or significant birthdays. Joe and Nida celebrated 65 years of marriage in August 2008 – a few months before Nida passed away that November. From several interviews to a visit by a baby kangaroo (a joey for Joe) to various military and other organizations who want to come shake hands with Joe and wish him a happy birthday, the next few weeks are going to be quite busy for the spry veteran. “We’re just trying to spread it out so it’s not overwhelming now,” Veitenheimer said of the response she’s received at Brookdale Midwestern. In addition to all the cards she’s begun receiving, Veitenheimer said several parties have already been planned in Joe’s honor. “This was more or less a surprise,” Joe said. “I was surprised to see how many people have come, but I was glad to see them at the same time. That they’ve come and want to recognize me for my birthday. It is nice.” The senior living center will host a party on his actual birthday, thanks to “someone from Rants and Raves here locally,” Veitenheimer said. A senior from Windthorst has also asked to be able to

21

come sing for him as part of the birthday festivities as well. “I’ve seen the excitement in his face when someone asks if he’s the Joe Cuba who’s turning 100,” she said of the response. “We’ve learned more and more about him over the last couple of days than we did know in the last four years.” The family will host a private party for him on March 3, once all of his children can get to town. Beverly said she’s seen her father perk up quite a bit from all of the attention he’s received since Veitenheimer’s Facebook post. “It’s just been the most humbling, thankful, gratifying experience of my life to see him happy. He’s just reveling in this,” she said. “It’s almost like there’s a happy person inside going, ‘Yippee! Yippee!’ Every time he opens a card, it’s going to be special and the gift that keeps on giving. We never

even dreamed of this response – to know people love him this much. It’s been like a good shot in the arm, and I think it’s going to contribute to his longevity.” Besides the 100 birthday cards he wished for, he only had one other gift he wanted to go into his next century – “continued good health.” He may need a few months of good health to get through all of the birthday cards and love being shared with him. “Even if he died tomorrow, it’s been just the most beautiful gift that you could have ever given him or us, as a family,” Beverly said.
