ast week, four very excited gentlemen entered the SPJST Home Office. Larry Laznovsky of Lodge 135, Ennis; Jerry and Rome Milan, both of Lodge 154, Fort Worth; and Bob Podhrasky of Lodge 130, Dallas presented a dynamic presentation to the SPJST Supreme Lodge during its quarterly meeting. The presentation encompassed the upcoming 2009 American Sokol Slet in Fort Worth, Texas, June 23 to 28, 2009. The 2009 American Sokol Slet seeks to unite several related organizations and events in order to create a major happening in the City of Fort Worth. The Downtown Fort Worth area will come alive with cultural and physical attractions.

The four gentlemen’s enthusiasm and passion for Sokol and SPJST was certainly a highlight of the Supreme Lodge meeting. Thank you, fraternal brothers, for sharing the presentation and inviting SPJST to be a part of this amazing event.

Valentine Time The Vestnik is proud to once again present its annual Valentine’s Day issue on February 13. The issue will be filled with valentine greetings from members. A Ray of Smiles Thanks to regular Vestnik contributor Raymond L. Posival of Lodge 15, Buckholts for making me smile last week with this submission: Regardless of one’s age, you simply should always plan ahead. The local news station was interviewing an 80-year-old lady because she had just gotten married—for the fourth time.

The interviewer asked her questions about her life, about what it felt like to be marrying again at 80 and about her new husband’s occupation.

“He’s a funeral director,” she answered.

“Interesting,” the newsman thought. He then asked her if she wouldn’t mind telling him a little about her first three husbands and what they did for a living.

She paused for a few moments, needing time to reflect on all those years.

After a short time, a smile came to her face, and she answered proudly, explaining that she’d first married a banker when she was in her early 20s, then a circus ringmaster when in her 40s, later on, a preacher, when in her 60s, and now in her 80s, a funeral director.

The interviewer looked at her, quite astonished, and asked why she had married four men with such diverse careers.

She smiled and explained, “I married one for the money, two for the show, three to get ready, and four to go.”

We are delighted and very proud for the state of Texas that it has a wonderful “new” museum in Temple, Texas—the Czech Heritage Museum. We remember back in 1995 driving to Temple to visit the museum, meeting with Mr. Leshikar and meeting you as well and then engaging Dorothy Pechal to show us around. We could not believe the volume of treasures and gifts from wonderful people for years and years, items too numerous to name!

Now you are enjoying the fruits of all those many years and moving into a new facility with even a full-time director and staff!

In our own case, we are proud to convey that after a three-year observation period of the Museum District Association, we have been invited to be one of Houston’s 18 fine museums as of spring 2007. We are grateful.

We wish you and all of SPJST great success in the New Year 2008.

My name is Chris Vochoska, and I moved to California from Texas in the 1990s. My dad was raised in the West area. I sure miss West Fest!

Over the holidays, we were talking about his dad—Raymond Vochoska, Sr.—and grandparents’ home church when they came over from Czechoslovakia. He remembered that the church building was in Tours (or off Tours Road). He thought (but wasn’t sure) that it was the “CMB church.” I checked online and in (old and new) West Yellow pages but could not find a church with that designation.

When I received my SPJST calendar over the holidays, it hit me that you might be able to get me in the right direction of someone who could help me figure out the name of that church.

SPJST Lo dge Se c t ion Lodge 4 Hallettsville members enjoy Christmas party Dear Members, Our lodge held its monthly meeting and Christmas party on Sunday, December 9, 2007, at the Legion Hall beginning at 11:30 a.m.

At noon, President Joe Siptak called the meeting to order. The usual order of business was dispensed with. Pocket calendars from District Six Director Mike Ahlstrom were given out.

A delicious meal followed consisting of fried chicken, sausage, and a large variety of side dishes and desserts brought by the members.

Mark Labaj gave the meal blessing.

Christmas songs were sung, and gifts were handed out. The youth club provided a pretty decorated Christmas tree and had fruit and candy canes for everyone. Bingo was then enjoyed. Many thanks to FAC Annie Vahalik for getting the bingo prizes and being the caller.

Door prize winners were Joe Siptak, Lillie Kolacny, Crystal Chudej and Gaynelle Chudej.

Our next meeting will be Sunday, January 13, 2008, at 2 p.m.

Lodge 6 Cottonwood installs officers President Milton Peterson called the meeting to order on January 6, 2008. The Pledge of Allegiance and SPJST motto were led by youth Amelia Peterson, Anna Dulock, and Lakn Dieterich.

A moment of silence was observed for the sick and deceased members of the lodge.

The installation of officers was conducted by Johnnie Krizan. They are: President Milton Peterson Vice President Ray Perez Second Vice President Don Urbanovsky Secretary/FAC Barbara Hykel Treasurer Peggy Dobecka Reporter Dorothy Kucera Financial Secretary George Straten Flag Bearer Georgie Soukup Youth Leader Peggy Dobecka Assistant Youth Leader Pat Dieterich Sister Georgia Soukup reported there were 24 members present.

Sister Barbara Hykel read the minutes from the last meeting and gave her FAC report.

Sister Peggy Dobecka gave the treasurer’s report and the youth club report stating that in December, they took cakes to the Rest Home on December 5 and crafts on December 16.

Brother George Straten gave his hall report. New members are Kaylea Routte, Jaidn Keith Sparks, and Charles E. Karlik. Harry Lee Svacek obtained additional insurance. We received two new transfers.

They are Betty Watts and Donna Kocian.

Sister Jerelene Lenart sent get well cards to Rose Uptmore, Raymond Marek, and Rita Svacek. Sympathy cards were sent to Sam Pinter on the loss of his wife; Lydia Dobecka on the loss of her husband; Peggy and Robert Dobecka, Shirley Romea, Dolores and Bill Wolf, Carolyn Ann and William Toliver, and David and Stacy Dobecka on the loss of their father. A sympathy card was also sent to Dorothy and Jerry Kucera on the loss of her mother.

Lodge 15 Buckholts welcomes visitors President Douglas Williams called its January meeting to order at 5 p.m.

The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all, followed by a moment of silence in memory of our departed members.

The secretary read the minutes from the last meeting. They stood approved as read. Treasurer Sandi Fischer gave her report. The report was approved as read.

We had 11 members attending and five guests.

Our guests were Honorary District Two Director Frank Klinkovsky and Laverne Vanicek and Honorary District Two Director Willie Kohutek and wife Adeline. Adeline has been assisting us in applying for our historical marker. Our president asked her to give us a report on the status. She had submitted the application to Rockdale. It met with approval and has now been sent to Austin. She said it will be quite a while before we hear if it meets approval or not. We

certainly appreciate all of Adeline’s help. She has helped with several other markers and is more familiar as to what is required.

Our president updated us on all the future events. We got a list of the members who plan to attend the banquet on February 9 in Killeen. We discussed the big event coming up January 25 in Buckholts—the Annual Hee Haw. It is a very entertaining event. Folks are coming from near and far each year to attend.

Pictures were taken of our 2008 officers, and Frank Klinkovsky swore them in at the meeting.

Frank Tomascik made the motion that we adjourn, seconded by Derrick Ruzicka, and the motion carried.

Door prizes were drawn, followed by a delicious meal.

Lodge 24, Cyclone plans Tail Gate party fund-raiser President Daniel Wilde called our meeting to order on Monday, January 14, 2008, at 7 p.m. Margaret Mikeska read the minutes of the last meeting, and they were approved as read.

Our December meeting was a Christmas potluck dinner. We all had a great time.

Barbara Macek read the treasurer’s report, and it was approved as read. Jason Hoelscher gave the vice president’s report on upcoming events. Saturday, February 9 is the SPJST Awards Banquet, and members signed up if they wished to attend. The District Two Spring Meeting will be held at Flag Hall on Sunday, March 9. He also spoke about Join Hands Day coming up in May to spark ideas for the event.

Wilbert Mikeska gave the bar report.

Joan Vanicek gave the youth report. Their December meeting was

held at Flag Hall, and the youth collected 41 toys for the Santa Pal project. Way to go, youth! They also got a response back from a soldier they had been writing to in Iraq. It certainly made their letters all worth it.

The youth club’s next meeting will be on Sunday, January 20. They will be joining Lodge 47, Seaton Youth Club to go ice skating in Bryan, Texas.

We are in the major planning stages of our Tail Gate party fundraiser. It will be a great time for all.

Please mark your calendars for Saturday, February 2 at Flag Hall in Cyclone, Texas. The event begins at 5 p.m. with doors opening and dinner served at 6 p.m. We will have a dance afterward with Terry Taylor and Shilo playing a variety of new and old country music for your enjoyment.

There will be a full meal, drinks, Tail Gate snacks, and dessert. A silent auction will be going on as well as bucket prizes and a variety a grand prizes. (please see our ad on page 29 of this week’s Vestnik) Tickets are on sale for $40 per person or $75 per couple.

Children ages six and up are $5, and ages five and under are free. There will be kids’ prizes and activities going on!

Tournament in Seaton on January 19, and the State Tarok Tournament in Seaton on February 2. She talked about working on a project for Join Hands Day in May. Sharon also asked to let her know if a lodge member is ill so she can send them a card.

Cristy Girod gave the youth club report. The club has 21 members.

The next youth club meeting is scheduled for Sunday, January 20 at 3 p.m.

Jesse Pospisil welcomed Supreme Lodge Vice President Gene McBride, his wife Frances, State FAC Chester Jenke, and District Two State Field Representative Hiram Dixon. Jesse reported the property committee is currently working on replacing the ceiling in the game room. Lodge 29 will have its annual Super Bowl party on Sunday, February 3. He also reported on the Czech Heritage Museum. The Museum also achieved its challenge grant goal and is set to begin remodeling the building for the museum. Jesse is chairman of the

building committee that will meet on Monday, January 14 to discuss hiring an architect for the project.

SL Vice President Gene McBride spoke about the lodge officer workshop and Awards Banquet on February 9. There were more than 5,600 applications for membership written amounting to $285 million in 2007. The Insurance Department has moved into the new addition at the SPJST Home Office.

District Two SFR Hiram Dixon gave us Lodge 29’s new incentive goals for 2008. He also offered his assistance on any project or any questions we have in the future.

State FAC Chester Jenke reminded us of the State Progressive 42 Domino Tournament on Saturday, January 12 at the SPJST Home Office. He also encouraged us to attend the Fourth Annual Bowl for the Cure to benefit the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation on February 16 in Austin.

State FAC Jenke also reported SPJST

received the Platinum Award for the Join Hands Day event last year. State YAD is scheduled for August 9 in Killeen, and the SPJST End-ofSummer Getaway will be August 15 to 17 in Corpus Christi.

Ronnie Rieger discussed the auction fund-raiser scheduled for March 1. Only 125 tickets will be sold. He talked about the prizes and the steak dinner that will be served. Tickets were distributed to members to sell, and he asked everyone to bring the ticket money to the next meeting. The auction will be discussed in more detail next month.

Connie Voigt reminded us of Bunco scheduled for next Thursday, January 17, 2008, at 6:30 p.m.

Lodge 49, Rowena Members Celebrate Christmas SPJST Lodge 49, Rowena hosted its annual Christmas meal and game social on December 7, 2007, at the lodge hall. Registration began at 6:30 p.m. The meal consisted of sausage, sauerkraut, green beans, potatoes, and various side dishes. The desserts were too many to list and all were

delicious. Many thanks to several members for helping to make this party a success by the hours spent cooking, decorating, cleaning, and getting ready for the party. They were Eddie Mae Huebner, Lula Marecek, Jackie Pospichal, Laura Pospichal, Sylvia Rollwitz, Pam Teplicek, and

Beverly Teplicek.

The members voted to bring little story books for the Runnels County Head Start, and this was a success as over 50 books were donated. Thanks to all who participated in making this Christmas project a success. The young people sang several Christmas

carols. Santa Claus, with the help of Laura Pospichal, had sleighs filled with candy for all of the young people present. Everyone in attendance enjoyed an evening of fun, food, and fraternal fellowship.

Lodge 40 El Campo-Hillje presents January meeting minutes President Sheldon Holub called the meeting to order at 2 p.m. on Sunday, January 13, 2008. Present were 34 members and two guests.

The Pledge of Allegiance was led

by Craig Cerny. A moment of silence was observed for the deceased members and ill in the community.

Roll call had all officers present except Norma O’Canas. Trustees were all present.

A motion was made by Robert Gardner to accept the minutes as printed in the Vestnik and was seconded by Edmund Kana with one correction.

Treasurer Lorraine Kana gave her report. FAC Betty Sanders thanked the kitchen workers and announced that next month’s February 10 meeting will be potluck. Members are asked to bring desserts.

Youth Leader Judy O’Canas gave her report in place of Norma O’Canas who was absent.

Wednesday, January 23, 2008 New Business Brenda Elaine Wooley had requested transfer to Lodge 87 from Lodge 200, Bruceville-Eddy. It was voted to accept this transfer, and a note of welcome will be sent to Ms. Wooley.

Following the meal, Lodge 87 President John Troy called the meeting to order.

The Pledge of Allegiance was said, and a moment of silence was observed for departed members.

The minutes of the November meeting were read. A motion was made by Joe Camp and seconded by Gay Camp that the minutes be approved as read. The motion carried.

The treasurer’s report was not given because of the absence of Treasurer Daryl Entrop due to illness.

Old Business In an effort to preserve the soil around the lodge building from eroding, Joe Camp and Sidney Kacir have been making a study on how best to do this. Joe Camp reported on the progress of converting our farming acreage from crop land to improved pasture land. Mr. Camp stated that he had met with Mr. Leo Chenoweth, a custom coastal bermuda grass contractor. Mr. Chenoweth farms coastal himself as well as professionally managing farms for other people.

Mr. Camp and Mr. Chenoweth walked over the entire SPJST Lodge 87 acreage. Mr. Chenoweth stated that the soil surface was ready to sprig without any additional tilleage.

Mr. Camp obtained soil samples and sent them to Texas A&M Extension System and has received its recommendation for preplant sprigging coastal. He informed Mr. Chenoweth

of this data. Depending on favorable weather, we will sprig late March or early April.

There was no other business. At next month’s meeting, we will again have a potluck supper. The meeting adjourned.

Lodge 88, Houston reports on member activities Sick List We wish a speedy recovery to Bessie Dewer who fell recently and broke her wrist and hip. She underwent surgery on her hand as well as her hip. She is now receiving therapy in the Tomball Regional Medical Center in Tomball, Texas. Also, Lodge 88 President Pat Bruce spent a few days in the hospital for tests, but she is now home and back on the job.

Memorial Northwest Hospital and hopes to be back home soon.

Baby Boom Kelly and Kevin Siblik and sons Jake and Kyle welcomed twin sisters, Brooke and Reagan Siblik, born December 3, 2007. Proud grandparents are Diane and Verner Sokol and proud great-grandmother is Lowrina Lindemann.

With this new year, we will be welcoming more babies . . . Kami and John Buri are expecting their first child in early August. This will make Fred and JoAnn Buri grandparents for the first time. Millissa and Matthew Herring are expecting their first child in mid-July, and Christina (Herring) and Darren Bailey are expecting their first child in May. Lodge 88, Houston presents January meeting minutes President Patricia Bruce called the meeting to order at 7:30 p.m., gave a short invocation, and led the members in the Pledge of Allegiance. A roll call of officers revealed the absence of Secretary Mary Granberry who was in the hospital and Parliamentarian Mildred Holeman due to an accident suffered by a close friend.

Acting Secretary Malak read the names of five departed members since the last meeting, after which the members stood in silence for a few moments in memory of these members. Sister Malak read the minutes of the December meeting, and they were approved.

Sister Clara Broz read the financial reports for the month of December and the annual report. She then gave a status report of Certificates of Deposits and other cash in the banks.

Communications were read from the families of Josephine Buri and Jerry Sebek, thanking the lodge and all members for their expressions of sympathy.

President Patricia Bruce gave a short explanation of “Celebrate ’08” and the new Welcome Committee which is being formed. She also announced the appointment of Dorothy Pflughaupt to chair the committee.

First Vice President Marceil Malak reported that she was in the process of preparing credentials for delegates and needed a few more social security numbers to complete the project.

FAC Esther Heinsohn reported on upcoming events such as the SPJST Awards Banquet on February 9; the State Tarok Tournament on February 2; and the fourth annual bowling tournament. She thanked the members for the contributions to the December grocery collection to help needy families. A sufficient amount was collected to help three families. Her annual FAC report for 2007 included 11,568 fraternal hours and 12,523 community hours. Great work, members!

Youth Leader Barbara Gonzales introduced the Coleman family, parents of District Five King Doug Coleman, and she announced that they are transferring to Lodge 88.

Barbara reported that the Thursday night kitchen activities showed a nice profit, and thanks were expressed to all who assisted to make it possible. A District Five trip to College Station to view Christmas lights was enjoyed.

Vrazels played an extra 30 minutes for the enjoyment of those who attended. She named the bands who are scheduled to play at the January and February dances and encouraged more members to attend.

Vice Chairman of the Social Night Committee Sherry Miller reported

that the bingo attendance is rising nicely and that Mildred Holeman, the chairman, has an attendance goal of 300. Bring a friend!

Board of Trustees Chairman John Broz thanked members for their work in making 2007 a good year. Names of the 2008 officers and sub-committees were read.

Sister Malak reminded committees to present their annual reports for audit at the Audit Committee’s meeting on January 29.

Reporting for the Birthday Club, Sister Lowrina Lindemann reported that the December turkey and dressing dinner was enjoyed, and she asked for pastries for Anniversary Day.

Sister Dorothy Pflughaupt reported on the Gun Club Kitchen activities.

The group was formed about three years ago to provide food for the attendees at the Gun Club meetings, a rental at Lodge 88 for many years. It has been a large undertaking.

Numerous members have contributed services, and it has been profitable.

Chairman of the Kitchen Committee Dennis Roeder requested helpers for Anniversary Day. President Bruce introduced Elizabeth Mason representing the Texas Lions Camp. This is a camp for children with disabilities and is completely free. She invited us to inform anyone we know who may be interested in this activity.

No new members were reported for January, but the names of one transfer out and three transfers in were read and approved.

Members named on the sick list were Emil Kuropata, Marie Stayton, Bessie Dewer, Ora Nell Hassebrock, Melissa Dawn Havemann, Ed Miculka, Flo Orsag, and Vernell Foyt.

Let’s all remember these members in our prayers.

A list of committee appointees for 2008 was read by First Vice President Malak. President Bruce then called for nominations for two members to serve on the Remunerations Committee. Nominated and elected by acclamation were Gene Barcak and Willie Mae Pechacek.

Guide Josephine Pflughaupt announced 57 members and four visitors present. She read the list of birthday and anniversary celebrants for January, and “Happy Birthday” was sung.

Sister Helen Hegwood invited anyone interested in participating in the bowling tournament to contact her.

Youth Leader Holly Hubenak reported that the youth were considering painting the youth room. She is also looking forward to the Youth Leader training retreat in March.

Further, the youth club will be working the kitchen on Sunday, February 24 (Barefoot Becky and the Ivanhoe Dutchmen) and Sunday, March 16 (St. Patrick’s Day dance with Don Peachey of Burnet, Wisconsin).

Ladies Circle Evelyn Scaff reported that the Circle is planning a money-making trip to a Wichita Falls area casino in February or March.

Sunshine Committee Report Mary Ann Kozel reported that sympathy cards went to the families of Ernest Dueser and Marion Stank Bason. A get well card was sent to Joe Juran.

Trustee Report John Paprskar reported that the trustees continue to work on a gas lease. Further, they are being mindful of the need to conserve energy and possibly switch energy providers if it ever becomes feasible.

Lodge 200 Bruceville-Eddy plans for 2008 Lodge 200, Bruceville-Eddy held its first meeting of the year on January 2, 2008. In keeping with past precedent, President Allen Trigg began the meeting leading the Pledge of Allegiance. Routine business was handled, and Secretary-Treasurer Monica Ferguson read the minutes and gave the treasurer’s report. Both reports were accepted as presented.

Appreciation was expressed to past Secretary-Treasurer Nancy Deviney.

Planning discussions for 2008 took place. Authorization was given to transfer bank accounts for the convenience of the new secretary-treasurer.

FAC Dan Ferguson reviewed upcoming fraternal activities and

asked everyone to report individual fraternal acts to him so that they could be included on his report to the SPJST Home Office.

Lodge 246 Morgan’s Point begins new year Dear Members and Readers, This will be my first and last report of Lodge 246, Morgan’s Point meetings this year. After the resignation of our youth leader, I accepted the vacant position and had to step down as reporter for the remainder of the year.

Marissa Salinas was elected to the position of reporter for 2008.

The first meeting for 2008 was on Sunday, January 13 at Lone Star Banquet Hall. Special guests at the meeting included Supreme Lodge Vice President Gene McBride and his wife Frances, and District Two Youth Counselor Patsy Koslovsky.

All officers gave their reports, and all were accepted as presented. Vice President/FAC David Nauert presented information on upcoming state and district SPJST events. The Bowl for the Cure fund-raiser will be held February 16 in Austin. Lodge members interested in bowling can contact David or any other lodge officer for

assistance in forming a team, or you can organize your own teams. Watch the Vestnik for details. David also reported that Lodge 246 had reached our goal in 2007 for applications written. Congratulations and a huge thank you to all of our sales agents and members who gave the referrals.

Lodge members voted to accept John Storey and Betty Storey as transfers into Lodge 246. Thank you for choosing our lodge, and we look forward to meeting you soon at the meetings.

Members are planning to participate in Czech Feszt in October and are already considering the options for our booth. A committee is being considered within the next few meetings to be in charge of that event. We also discussed the need to create written

rules and regulations for the lodge.

Members who were present at the meeting were given an example to study and adjust to our needs. The officers will enlist the input of all members to construct a document to suit the needs of the lodge. This document will be discussed at the next meetings until it is completed and accepted.

Supreme Lodge Vice President presented David Nauert with a certificate on behalf of the National Fraternal Congress of America for appreciation of all the work David does in the name of fraternalism. Gene thanked David for countless hours and supporting SPJST. David and his wife, Melanie Zavodny, work together on many projects for SPJST. They are entirely dedicating and devoting their lives to

SPJST, and they represent what true fraternalism is.

SL Vice President Gene McBride also informed members of the 2008 incentive program and requirements.

The Awards Banquet will be held in Killeen on February 9.

Due to many conflicts with our usual meeting date of the second Sundays each month, we have made a change in the meeting schedule.

Beginning in February, we will meet on the first Sunday each month at Lone Star Banquet Hall in Morgan’s Point. The youth club will meet at 2 p.m., and the adult meeting will be moved to 2:30 p.m. This will give the adult members a chance to attend both meetings.

The weather is turning cooler now.

Stay warm and drive safely on your travels. See you all at the next meeting—February 3 at 2 p.m. for the youth club or 2:30 p.m. for the adult lodge.

Fort Worth Ladies Circle Our January meeting opened with the Pledge of Allegiance. We had 32 ladies and three gentlemen present.

Alice Barnes read a nice opening prayer. She is doing a good job finding appropriate pieces for meditation.

Willie Mae Becan brought a new denim western jacket to be given in a drawing. Mary Anne Krivanek sold tickets during our meeting. She sold $37 worth of tickets, and Lorenda Manasco won the jacket.

Cards were passed around for members’ signatures.

Sympathy cards were sent to Julia Dueser for her loss of husband Ernest and to Joy Booe’s family for the loss of a son. A get well card went to Theresa Clay who is getting better and hopes to be able to come to our March meeting.

Mary Anne Gibson thanked us for our prayers for her brother as his reports were all good. She reported that Mac McMillan had a cold but otherwise was okay.

Gloria asked about the wishes of the members for a day trip. Everyone is anxious to do one. Of course, we are all ready to go gambling. A trip to Kiowa Casino was brought up, and we agreed that we would like to do that. I agreed to get details for a February trip. Also a trip to see the azaleas in Winthrop in the spring was

As a matter of fact, I have set up a trip to Kiowa Casino for the group to go February 28. I will call the members who signed up and give them the details.

To help the hostesses get out of the kitchen faster, Gloria asked us to take our dirty dishes home to wash and dispose of our leftovers. Our hostesses for lunch were Lucy Martinez, Jean Sparkman, Helen Kubala, and Sue Arnold.

Our January birthday members were Lorenda Manasco, Bessie Ellsworth, Mona Hattendorf, and Kitty Rippin.

There were 13 door prizes awarded. Thank you all for bringing the gifts.

Lodge 202 Jourdanton youth makes a difference Lodge 202, Jourdanton Youth Club member Sammy Hoggard shared his winning essay at the January 6, 2008, adult Lodge 202 meeting. Sammy submitted the following essay in the PTA sponsored contest from among 100-plus fifth graders to advance to the San Antonio Northeast ISD competition. The theme for this year’s competition was “How You Can Make a Difference.”

Small Stuff = Big Results

By Sammy Hoggard A little grain of sand is such a small thing, but when that little grain of sand is caught in an oyster, it is turned into a pearl! Just like that little grain of sand, I am only one person, but I can do so much to make this world a better place.

Cleaning up the side of the road is one way to help our community. This will make your community have less pollution. I am involved in a youth program called SPJST in which we help others and the community. We have cleaned the Jourdanton Community Center and provided food and toys to the animal shelter. Every

PAYTON PORUBSKY Lodge 47, Seaton welcomes Payton Porubsky, age six, to the youth club. She is the daughter of Danny Porubsky and Michelle Bartek-Porubsky. Her sister is Morgan.

Payton enjoys deer hunting, helping feed cows, riding horses, and helping barbecue at cookoffs.

She is a first grade student at Thornton Elementary in Temple.

On November 30, 2007, Lodge 84, Dallas Youth Club members met at Wendy’s on Northwest Highway in Dallas for a meeting and social.

Present were Desi Christman, Scott Cowan, Elisabeth Cowan, Melinda McClellan, Rachel McManus, Zachary McManus, and Deanna Houpy.

State King’s Notebook

By 2007-2008 SPJST State King Colby Havemann Lodge 17, New Tabor - District One Wow! December has already come and gone. The SPJST State Royalty has been busy in parades, festivals, and our own lodge activities. Time is just flying by, and I have a lot to catch up on.

On Saturday, October 6, we attended the Texas Fraternal Congress in Austin. We saw many youth perform talents from State Youth Achievement Day. They were great to watch again.

I also attended the District One Fall Fun Day in Snook. We had horseshoe competitions and played bingo. Lindsey and I drew the “lucky numbers” for bingo while Holly Narro announced them. I competed in the annual Christmas Ornament Contest. I won first with my puzzle piece wreath ornament in my age State King Colby Havemann group. It was a very fun day.

We rode in the Lickskillet parade in and State Queen Lindsey Jones Fayetteville and gave out a lot of candy. at Texas Fraternal Congress in Austin Lindsey and I were very lucky to participate in Czech Feszt in Temple. We got to meet so many different people.

It was a lot of fun exploring around the trains and taking pictures.

Our most recent trip was truly the best.

We rode in a limo to the Temple Christmas parade. My dad and I made some vinyl signs for the Corvettes. I presented them to Vestnik Editor Melanie that night, and they were given on behalf of the 2007-2008 State Royalty. It was a great parade. The two SPJST Floats were amazing! Melanie, David, and all the others who helped did an outstanding job.

When we were riding in the parade people would shout, “nice car” and “Hey, look . . . it’s a king and queen.” I really enjoyed it, but it was cold—especially on the way back to the SPJST Home Office, but it was worth all of it.

In between all of our SPJST activities, Lindsey and I both found time to still participate in our school band activities. It was really exciting because our high school went to the state playoffs. We made it into the second round of playoffs, but that is where we fell short!

I have truly enjoyed being State King, and I look forward to a great 2008!

VĚSTNÍK annual American Stars of Teaching project, which recognizes exemplary teachers who raise student achievement, use innovative classroom strategies and make a difference in their students’ lives.

Teachers across all grade levels and disciplines will be honored later this year as 2008 American Stars of Teaching. One teacher will be recognized from every state and the District of Columbia.

Colleagues, parents, students, school administrators or members of the community may nominate a teacher they believe has demonstrated the skills, talents and qualities that personify a true teaching star.

This year, as in the past, Education Department officials again will visit the schools of American Star teachers to congratulate them on their success.

The awards project is part of the government’s Teacher-to-Teacher Initiative, which was developed by teachers for teachers. Its overall goal is to engage some of the nation's best teachers and practitioners in sharing strategies for raising student achievement and informing teachers of the latest successful research-based practices.

The initiative also includes regional and district summer workshops for teachers, roundtables, regular e-mail updates, digital learning and other professional development opportunities.

Lodge 84, Dallas Youth Club On December 9, 2007, the Lodge 84, Dallas Youth Club performed its Christmas program for the lodge members. We had one practice on December 2, and we had the December meeting before the practice.

The program started with a group recitation of “Teach the Children” the real meaning of Christmas with different symbols—a candle, a fir tree, bells, holly, a wreath, candy cane, an angel.

Then, Melinda McClellan and

Deanna Houpy performed their dance routines.

I played “Carol of the Bells” on the piano.

We then dressed in our costumes for our traditional Nativity scene. A couple of our youngest angels joined

the stage at the end. After our program, we got a special visit from Santa, and he gave us each a bag of treats.

In Memoriam Resolution of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge 154, Fort Worth, wish to express our heartfelt sympathy on behalf of our membership to the family and friends of our departed lodge sister, KATHERINE “KAY” HALE GARRISON, age 85, who passed from this life Friday morning, November 30, 2007.

Visitation was from 6 to 8 p.m.

Sunday, December 30 at Mount Funeral Home. Graveside service was at 3 p.m.

Pastor Kevin Barke of Fellowship Baptist Church presided.

Pallbearers were Katherine Garrison her nephews.

Katherine “Kay” Garrison was born May 12, 1922, in Fort Worth.

Katherine retired from the Peoria, Illinois, Ford dealership where she did bookkeeping and car processing.

Katherine was an avid sports fan of all sports. She played softball, roller derby, and did gymnastics in her younger years. Katherine loved to play “42” dominoes; it was her Wednesday night favorite. She was also a charitable bingo operator at Town West Bingo.

Katherine was a longtime active member of SPJST Lodge 154, Fort Worth and Sokol Fort Worth.

Katherine will be missed by all who loved her. Katherine, we know the Lord put you at the domino tables as soon as you arrived in heaven!

Katherine was preceded in death by father Walter Hale, Sr., who was president of SPJST Lodge 154, Fort Worth for many years; mother Mary Obal Hale who was treasurer of SPJST Lodge 154, Fort Worth for many years; brother retired United States Air Force Lt. Colonel Walter Hale, Jr.; and son George Halford.

She is survived by many cousins of the Milan family - Frankie Milan, Rose Steinman, Emil Milan, Jerry Milan, all of Fort Worth, and Frances Mamula of South Bend, Indiana; many other close cousins and friends; and “Shu-Shu”.

Funeral service was held Monday, December 31 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church, Fort W o r t h .

Interment was in Mount Olivet Cemetery.

Scriptural vigil was held at 5 p.m.

Sunday, December 30 at St. Paul’s Lillian Smith Catholic Church.

Lillian was born December 1, 1918, in Collin County to Mary and James Fowler. She was a member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church. She was a rural mail carrier for the United States Postal Service for 27 years.

Lillian was also a member of SPJST Lodge 154, Fort Worth, a charter member of the Lake Worth Garden Club, and Friendship Club.

She was also associated with Sokol Fort Worth and the Women’s League of the Salvation Army.

She was preceded in death by husband Charles “Smitty” Smith in 1987; great-grandson Zachary Evan Orland; and precious dogs Rusty Ann, Peaches, and Sandy.

Survivors include daughters Barbara Orand and Sharron Connelly; grandchildren Tommy, Rodney, Craig and wife Theresa, Byron Orand and wife Maria, Brad Connelly and wife Sarah, Laurie Whitney and husband Bob, Bill Connelly and wife Jackie; greatgrandchildren Kate, Marshall, Parker, Molly, Lucy, Crit, Braford, Lauren,

Louis A. Kokes, 88, of San Angelo passed away Sunday, December 2, 2007, in Shannon Medical Center surrounded by family and friends. Funeral service was at 11 a.m., Wednesday, December 5 at the Wall Brethren Church.

The Reverend Tommy Tallas officiated.

Burial followed in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens.

Louis was a member of Lodge 160, San Angelo.

Louis was born January 25, 1919, in Granger, Texas, on a small farm. He grew up in the Granger community and attended the Circleville School through Louis Kokes the eighth grade.

Louis was baptized and confirmed in the Czech language in the Czech Moravian Church in Granger. He was drafted into the military service in 1941. He later returned home to help his family farm. In 1942, they moved to San Angelo where Louis farmed until 1951. He married Dorothy L. Drgac on November 21, 1947. They just recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.

In 1951, Louis went to work for Lone Star Gas Company as a meter reader and after 32 and one-half years, he retired in 1984. Louis was a member of the Wall Brethren Church where he served on the Board of Elders, was a Sunday school teacher, song leader and a member of the Czech choir. Louis served as secretary and treasurer of the Mutual Aid Society of the Wall Local for 43 years. He also served as vice president of RVOS. He was very active and served as president of the Concho Valley Czech Heritage Society. Louis was also a member of

the Downtown Lions Club. Louis’ hobbies were wood and copper crafts, which he loved to work on with the help of his wife Dorothy.

They entered numerous craft items in the San Angelo Rodeo exhibits.

Louis also loved growing and showing his prize pecans. Louis will be greatly missed. He loved people! At home at Rio Concho Terrace, he was a friend to all. Even during his numerous hospital stays he still smiled and laughed. His happy attitude in life will not be forgotten. His love for the Lord was evident. Louis was an inspiration to all!

Louis is preceded in death by his parents; brother Frank Kokes; and sisters Mary Chasak, Emily Krupala, and Ann Gibson.

He is survived by wife Dorothy; sister-in-law Martha Kokes of Taylor; nieces Dorothy Kubacak, Marilyn Holik, Judy Holik, Lyn Hattemian, and Deborah Drgac; nephews Daniel and Gene Chasak, Robert and John Krupala and Eugene and Marvin Kokes, Larry, Gary, James, Rodney, Scott, Robert and Richard Drgac; numerous greatnieces and nephews; and many special friends.

Pallbearers were Robert and John Krupala, Alan Chasak, Eugene Kokes, Larry Drgac, Benny and Brian Holik, and Johnny Laza.

Honorary pallbearers were Daniel Chasak, Marvin Kokes, Raymond Kubacak, Scott Drgac, and Stanley Holik.

The family requests that memorials be made to the Wall Brethren Church building fund; or to a favorite charity.

Arrangements were with Johnson’s Funeral Home.

Resolution of Sympathy We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of Lodge Karel Havlicek No. 4, Hallettsville, Texas, on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our sincerest and deepest sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge brother, MATHEW A. KLEKAR of Sheridan, Texas, who passed away on December 29, 2007, at the age of 72 years.

He was born on November 15, 1935, in Yoakum to Mathew and Louise Polasek Klekar. He married Dorothy Pauler Klekar on June 26, 1972, in St. John Catholic Church.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Mr. Klekar is survived by daughter Linda Klekar Miramontos of Eagle Lake; stepdaughter Annie Clark and husband Everett of El Campo; stepsons Marvin C. Mozisek and Daryal L. Mozisek of Sheridan, Dennis Mozisek of Schulenburg, and David Mozisek and wife Annette of Germany; four grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife Dorothy on June 15, 1997; daughter Mathalee Klekar; stepdaughter Annette Mozisek; stepsons Franklin and Kenneth Mozisek; daughter-in-law Connie Mozisek; and brother Henry L. Klekar.

Visitation began at 12 noon, Monday, December 31 at Kubena Funeral Home. Rosary was recited at 6 p.m. Monday, December 31 and at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, January 1, 2008, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Services were held Tuesday, January 1 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Reverend John Peters officiating. Burial followed in the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery.

We, the members of the Resolution Committee of Lodge 92, Fort Worth, on behalf of our membership, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of our departed brother, ERNEST A. DUESER. Ernest A. Dueser, 94, passed away Saturday, December 29, 2007, following an on-and-off battle with cancer.

Ernie was born in Temple on September 8, 1913, the son of Henry F. and Annie Siler Dueser. He grew up in Cameron and Fort Worth, served in the United States Army field artillery unit at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. He enjoyed a long career as a mechanic and sheet metal worker with Vought Aircraft Industries.

He was an active member of SPJST Lodge 92, Fort Worth. His proudest achievement was his marriage to his childhood sweetheart, Julia Louise Simmank, on July 3, 1937. Ernie and Julia recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. Even in his nineties, Ernie was renowned as a gardener. He cheerfully helped feed the neighborhood.

Ernie and Julia also enjoyed traveling, camping, fishing, and exploring the countryside. He was an enthusiastic student of American history and an 85-year member of St. Paul Lutheran Church.

Ernie was preceded in death by his parents; stepfather Henry A Laymance; and brother Henry D. Dueser.

A graveside service was held at noon on Saturday, January 5 in Laurel Land Memorial Park in Fort Worth.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any memorial donations be made to the building fund of St. Paul Lutheran Church, 1800 West Freeway, Fort Worth, Texas 76102.

The ABC of Czech

C for Czech For this week’s episode, I’m joined by Vladimir Tax, and we’re going to look at the letter “C” which stands for Czech.

Is it confusing? The whole series is about Czech, isn’t it? Sure it is, but this time we’ll talk about the word “Czech” itself which in Czech takes on surprisingly many different forms.

Let’s begin with the name of the country, the Czech Republic, or Česká republika”. “Česká” because the word “republika” is feminine. “Česká” changes to “Český” in the masculine gender. For example, if we talk about the Czech language, which is “Český jazyk”. Or you can say that simply in one word - “Čeština”, which means the same, the Czech language.

But back to the country; “Česká republika” consists of three historic lands: Bohemia “Čechy”, Moravia - “Morava” and Silesia - “Slezsko”. Some people think the official name of the country is too long; they don’t want to say “Česká republika” every time they speak of the country. There have been attempts to come up with a one-word name, and one is slowly but surely establishing itself, though many people still have their reservations. The word is “Česko”. And it stands for the whole of the Czech Republic, so please don’t confuse it with “Čechy” which refers only to Bohemia, the western part of the

country where the capital Prague is located.

The inhabitants of Bohemia are Czechs - “Češi” - that’s when there are many of them. A male Czech is “Čech”, a female Czech is “Češka” - genders are a catch in Czech. A person who lives in Moravia is “Moravan” - and “Slezan” is someone who comes from Silesia. “Čech”, as in a male Czech, is also quite a frequent surname in this country.

The wife of Mr “Čech” is Mrs “Čechová”, as most Czech female surnames end with the suffix -ová. And again, it’s different from “Češka”, which is a Czech woman, as we’ve already said.

There are quite a few words in Czech for which English has a common term - Czech, don’t you think?

Before we say goodbye, here’s one Czech patriotic saying for you which you can practice if you want: “Co je Češké, to je hezké,” meaning ‘What is Czech, is nice’.

And that’s all for today, I’m afraid. Next time, it will be the letter “D” and things we say at the doctor’s. Until then - stay healthy and na shledanou.
