Who's that knocking at my door? If you're in South Texas, it could be Juan or Terry! Cold calling. As the words imply, it means calling — unannounced — on an individual and selling him or her on the virtues of your product or service. Remember the old door-todoor salesman? That's cold calling and for many years, it was the preferred method of generating new business for practically all companies and salespeople. Practically all businesses — but not the SPJST. Why is that? "We just didn't operate that lway," says Supreme Lodge Chairman and District Seven Director Bob Bayer. "There may have been a few who took this route; however, most of the business was generated as a result of referred leads and sales reps who simply worked their immediate circle of family and friends." "And that's great. That's what built this Society," says Brother Bayer. "At the same time," he observes, "We're selling the SPJST short when we don't look beyond referred leads and our familiar contacts. Door-to-door selling is just a good way to stimulate new growth."
Here's How It's Done Easier said than done, right? Well, according to two of SPJST's newest sales representatives, there's no better route to building a lodge than calling on prospective members door-to-door. Sales Representatives Juan Lopez and Terry Hernandez were in Temple with their families on July 24 to organize SPJST Lodge 239, Hondo and a companion youth club. (Continued on page four)
