Dekuji y am, pane Souchek! in other words, — "Thank you, Mr. Souchek." The Czech Cultural Center Houston paid tribute to the preeminent "Mr. Czech," W.E. "Bill" Souchek at their Fifth Annual "Night of Czech Music, Dinner and Dance" fund raiser held August 18 at the Warwick Park Plaza Hotel in Houston. The youngest of eight children born to immigrants Josef and Julia Neradova Souchek, Brother Souchek was born in 1905 in Iowa City, Iowa. In 1927, fresh out of the University of Iowa, he was selected to teach at the prestigious Kinkaid School in Houston. Among other careers, Brother Souchek, who is a member of Lodge 88, Houston, has been teaching the Czech language for more than 30 years. Pictured above, Brother Souchek, right, visits with District Five Director-elect Larry Pflughaupt and his wife, Dorothy, also members of Lodge 88, Houston. Weimar Lodge Gains Momentum A Closer Look The history and growth of our fraternal order is closely linked to the world around us. Our challenge for the future lies in being observant, being attentive and latching on to those business concepts and fraternal projects that will attract new members and stimulate new member involvement at every level of our Society.

Just this past week, I had the chance to visit by telephone with Brother Leo Jares, President of Lodge 8, Weimar.

Until recently, we hadn't heard a lot out of the Weimar lodge. It was considered to be one of our dormant lodges - there were still members on the books but not a lot of activity.

A couple of years ago, District Six Direc-tor Matt Vanek identified the lodge as one of the "target lodges" in District Six. As a point of clarification, "target lodges" are those lodges - some active; some inactive - which district directors have identified as having significant growth potential within a given area.

While it's still early in the revitalization process of Lodge 8, Weimar, the lodge is already showing signs of renewed vigor. They have been meeting regularly and drawing good attendance. In this case, a lion's share of the credit goes to President Jares.

During our conversation, Brother Jares informed me that their September meeting would be "a real community event."

"We're going to have State Field Representative Jim Wiest come down and present an estate planning seminar for everyone who is interested," says Brother Jares. "Members and nonmembers are welcome," he says. "It's a chance to show them how the SPJST and our life insurance products fits into the big picture."

To accommodate what he hopes will be a capacity crowd, Brother Jares has already taken steps to rent a large meeting hall - St. Michael's Catholic Church Family Center - for the event.

He'll also be taking advantage of the free annual mailing that each local lodge is eligible for through the SPJST Home Office.

Hats off to all of those lodge members, field people and Home Office per-

sonnel who are working to bring new life and vitality to Lodge 8, Weimar --and indeed, to all of our lodges around the state.

Zero Percent Lodgel Lodges It's one thing to build a lodge hall. It's another thing to pay for its maintenance and upkeep. Recog-nizing this need, the Supreme Lodge, at its July meeting, voted to enact a program that will make zero-interest loans available to lodges seeking to make improvements in existing facilities.

The SPJST will make up to $50,000 in zero interest loans per calendar year, effective now.

The maximum amount that will be loaned to any one lodge is $10,000.

The program guidelines are simple, explains Supreme Lodge Secretary-Treasurer Lanita Anglin, who heads the Mortgage Lending Department.

"The loans will be made available on a first-come, first-served basis," she says, and will be subject to an evaluation by the district director.

"Application fees and closing costs will be waived," Ms. Anglin says, adding that lodges will have up to seven years to repay the loan.

NAFIC recognizes sales reps for "exemplary dedication" Congratulations to Martha Broz, FIC; Leonard Jansa, FIC; and Donald Williams, FIC for outstanding life insurance service to the SPJST and for their exemplary dedication as SPJST sales representatives. As a result of their efforts on behalf of the SPJST, they were recognized with awards by the National Association of Fraternal Insurance Counsellors (NAFIC).

The National Association of Fraternal Insurance Counsellors (NAFiC) met May 4 through May 6, 2000 at the Hyatt Regency-Fairlane Town Center in Dearborn, Michigan for their 50th Annual Convention and presented awards to FICs (Fraternal Insurance Counsellors) representing Fraternal Insurance companies throughout the Untied States.

Martha Broz, FIC, sales representative for Lodge 160, San Angelo, was recognized as FIC of the Year. As a $1 million plus producer for 13 years in a row, Martha has a 98 percent persistency record. She holds an office in her lodge as Fraternal Activities Coordinator and provides fraternal activities for the membership of her

lodge. She is also involved in other community activities.

Leonard Jansa, FIC, is also a sales representative for Lodge 160, San Angelo and was recognized by the NAFIC with a Quality Service Award.

The Quality Service Award is awarded to sales representatives for 90 percent persistency covering issued life insurance production of $1 million or more.

Donald Williams, FIC, is a sales representative for Lodge 215, South Plains. Donald received recognition from the NAFIC as a member of the One Million Club for sales in excess of $1 million and earned premium of at least $10,000. In addition, he received a Quality Service Award for his insurance sales for the SPJST. Congratulations to Martha, Leonard and Donald and many thanks to them on behalf of the SPJST! SPJST Education and Nature Center Committee report of August 6 meeting

We Can "Make A Difference" October 28.

National "Make a Difference Day" is Saturday, October 28, 2000. Created by USA WEEKEND magazine, Make a Difference Day is an annual event that takes place on the fourth Saturday of every October.

Since it was first organized by USA WEEKEND magazine in 1992, millions have participat ed. SPJST members can too! In 1998, approximately 2 million people volunteered on that day, accomplishing thousands of projects in hundreds of towns and helping millions.

The following committee members were present: Lisa Bubela, Randal Gaas, John Engelke, Paul Pflughaupt, Jerry Elzner and Otis Beck. The only member of the committee who was not present was Billy Rollwitz. He had a rest home meeting that same day.

Others who sat in on the meeting were Howard Leshikar, Sidney Kacir, Bob Bayer, Brian Vanicek, Stephanie Vanicek, Stanley Broz, Johnnie Krizan, Michael Galler and Mike Ahlstrom.

President Howard Leshikar welcomed everyone. It was an open meeting. Howard reported that he and John Engelke and Gene McBride had visited with a director from Camp Val Verde. He reported that there was a possibility of the camp being put up for sale or maybe part of the land.

John gave a report on how old camp Val Verde was and how there needed to be a lot of changes made to update the camp.

Someone then asked how big of a camp are we looking for and how much land would it take to put in for the facility that we are wanting.

Legal advisor Sidney Kacir went over the 501(c)(3) and asked if this is what we were really wanting. Howard gave the committee some ideas that could be done under the 501(c)(3): workshops such as financial planning, retirement planning, teachers, living in nature, summer camps and on. Some of Leonard Mikeska's ideas were building a family relationship, marriage workshop, gardening and nature outing and general fitness. The center would be open to the public. Mail outs could be sent out to members to make them aware of what is taking place at the center.

Sidney Kacir also mentioned the Peaceable Kingdom Retreat Center and how much funds it takes to run such a facility. It takes nearly $1,000 per day and $360,000 a year.

Paul Pflughaupt went over the plan that he drew up and presented to the Convention in June. He had a lot of great ideas and was off to a great start.

Time for our fun time meeting. Lodge 29, Taylor will be hosting our meeting and plan to treat us with a good meal of barbecue chicken and sausage with all the trimmings. We will have four spin wheels, a cakewalk and a billiard's tournament for your enjoyment.

Also, an adult Christmas Ornament Contest as well as the Youth Christmas Ornament Contest. All this as well as our regular fun things such as door prizes, prize drawing and silent auction. So I know you will not want to miss out on all this fun.

Mark your calendars now for September 17. Registration starts at 1 p.m. and the meeting part will start at 2 p.m. We are asking that you bring two items (per person) for the spin wheel and a cake for the cakewalk. The district will also provide items and cakes.

Youth Club members must be present at the district meeting to win.

Once again this year, the youth club will have a silent auction. All proceeds will go toward the Camp Val Verde Improvement Fund sponsored by District Two. Camp Val Verde is the home for our summer camp. There are several improvements needed which will be of benefit to our campers. Any donations for the auction will be appreciated and, of course, we will be in need of bidders. We thank you in advance for your support to benefit the camp we love so dearly and the continued memories we all have had at Camp Val Verde. A scrapbook had been compiled of this year's camp for everyone to see the fun we have each year.

Campers, your autographed Hawaiian pictures will be given out at the fall meeting. Be sure you attend to receive your pictures and get any autographs you may have missed.

Youth members, we will be in charge of the cake walk for the meeting. When you arrive at the meeting, be sure to sign up for the work schedule.

Eighty percent of all entry fees will be paid to the top five places in each category. The competition will be held in the pole barn behind the hall.

On Thursday evening, May 25, members and friends of Lodge 8, Weimar gathered at the Oakridge Restaurant in Schulenburg for the purpose of reorganizing Lodge 8. Prior to this reorganization meeting, Leo Jares, far right, met with members of the Shumbera family to accept the transfer of the lodge records for safe keeping. Pictured above, from left, are: Mrs. Emil (Evelyn) Shumbera, Rose Shumbera, Adolph Shumbera, Jr. and Leo Jares. Thanks to the Shumbera Family for being faithful stewards and maintaining the lodge books all these many years. As one of the SPJST's original 25 charter lodges, Lodge 8, Weimar observes its 103rd anniversary in 2000.

At their July meeting, Lodge 8, Weimar members met a the Weimar City Park Pavilion.

Special guest was Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar who delivered an update on the SPJST Library, Archives and Museum and the proposed Education and Nature Center.

8, Weimar schedules estate planning seminar Lodge

Monday, July 24 at 7 p.m. Weimar City Park Pavilion, President Leo Jares called the meeting of Weimar, Lodge 8 to order and all present recited the Pledge of Allegience. Seventeen members and guest were present.

Minutes of the lasst meeting and the treasurer's report were read by secretary-treasurer.

Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar was a special guest. He gave us an interesting report on the Library Archives and Museum, the SPJST Education and Nature Center (ENC) and a Lodge 16, Bila Hora lapel ribbon.

Attendance prizes were given out and a homemade ice cream and cookies social was enjoyed by all.

18, Elgin reports on August meeting Lodge

Elgin Lodge 18 held its monthly meeting August 15 at 7:30 p.m.

President Andrew Greinert called the meeting to order with the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silent prayer. Roll call of officers was held.

We had 34 members present for the meeting.

Vice President Dollie Hajda reminded the members to keep record of the hours donated to the community and lodge services and turn them in to her.

Secretary Agnes Eschberger gave her reading of the minutes for our July meeting. They were approved as read.

Lodge 40, El Campo-Hilije reports on August meeting El Campo-Hilije SPJST Lodge 40 gathered for the regular monthly meeting August 13, 2000. President Sheldon Holub welcomed all members and guest.

President Holub called the meeting to order at 2 p.m. with 32 members and one guest present. The Pledge of

Allegiance was recited and a moment of silence was observed for all the sick in the community and deceased members. Roll call of officers cited all officers present. The minutes of the July meeting were read with no corrections.

President Holub gave the president's report. A thank you was received from Kevin Sczech. The Incentive Report results were read. President Holub stated that Lodge 40 has 44 new members to date this year. Ruby Kunz gave the Treasurer's report.

Michelle Kunz gave the report for the Youth Club. She announced that member, Cory Cerny entered the contest for the tee-shirt design. Cory received a certificate of appreciation for entering the contest. Allen Bacak gave the bar report.

President Holub stated the Monday night bingo is coming along good and we are averaging 167 attendees per bingo night. President Holub thanked July kitchen workers. He thanked Ruby for mowing. President Holub thanked all that worked during the first Annual Czech Heritage Day Fund Raiser. Lodge 40 served plates to go.

Birthdays for August are Janet Marik and Jerome Holub. Mr. Holub won the cake which he shared with the membership. Tria Molberg won the attendance prize.

Edmund Kana made a motion to adjourn the meeting seconded by James Bacak. Motion carried. The meeting was adjourned at 3:10 p.m.

Lodge 40, El Campo-Hilije raising money for Czech Cultural Center in LaGrange The El Campo-Hillje SPJST members joined in helping raise funds for the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center in LaGrange, Texas. On August 6, 2000 the first-ever Czech Heritage Day was held in El Campo at the Knights of Columbus hall. A meal of fried chicken was served along with the trimmings. A silent auction, a live auction, a prize drawing and vendors offered to those attending.

Music during the meal was a provided by the East Bernard Czech Singers.

Lodge 40 birthday celebrants recognized at the August meeting were Janet Marik and Jerome Holub.

A dance in the afternoon with music by the Red Ravens ended an enjoyable day. The El Campo-Hillje SPJST participated with a donation to the prize drawing and worked the plates to go line. Members serving were Sheldon Holub, Karen Holub, Chase Holub, Allen and Josephine Bacak, Vlasta Bartos, Joseph Bartos, Edith Molberg, Tria Molberg, Laverne Bacak, Ben Svoboda, Elaine Svoboda, Mary Lou Elliot, Frank Bacak and guest, Kris Svatek, helped out also.

Lodge 47, Seaton planning Czech Heritage Day celebration Dear Members, The Melodion Band from the. Czech Republic was booked for Saturday, October 14, 2000 and we have decided to hold the Czech Heritage Day then.

Lodge 51, Eliinger members, families enjsy barbecue SPJST Lodge 51, Ellinger held a dinner for their members and immediate families living at home at the Ellinger Chamber of Commerce Hall, July 9. The event began at 12 noon with refreshments being served. At 12:30 p.m., Mrs. Ann Minar said table grace before the brisket and sausage dinner and all the trimmings were served. Approximately 90 people were present.

After the meal, a short business meeting was held. Calvin Hlinsky, newly elected president, was in charge.

Acknowledgement, for many years of service, was given to Ludwig Kocian who had served as president.

A moment of silence was held for the recently deceased members: L.G. Kubena, Dorothy Martinek and Johnnie Adamek. Mr. and Mrs. George Berkfeld, Sales Representative, spoke at this time.

We are in the bronze category at the present with 17 applicants sold.

Sister Darlene Engelke read a letter from Supreme Lodge Secretary Lanita Anglin concerning the report from the Texas Department of Insurance.

Due to the absence of Board of Directors Chairman Johnnie Gaidusek, President Engelke had Board Secretary Bonnie Pruitt read the minutes of the August 2 Board of Directors meeting.

Co-Chairman of the Entertainment Committee Michael Galler gave the entertainment report. He reported that the committee met on August 3 at 7 p.m. We have a new member Gladys Yates who we heartily welcomed.

Today, members were asked to bring sandwiches and the committee furnished desserts. The committee also discussed the Christmas party.

Fraternal Activities Coordinator Mary Alice Langlotz reported that 13 people were present at the game night in August. The next game night is September 11 at 6:30 p.m. She also reported that she had a call from someone in Hubbard wanting to play taroky on game night. If any member is interested in playing taroky, please contact Sister Langlotz.

Sister Emma Ceska of the Cheer and Condolence Committee reported that she sent get well cards to Gladys Yates, Ben Pustejovsky, Madeline Webb and Sandra Trickett. We with them all a speedy recovery. Sister Emma also thanked Sister Rosemary Spence for taking over for her as Guide in the July meeting.

Chairman of the Grievance Committee, Bennie Engelke reported no grievances.

Sister Rosemary Spence gave the auditing report. She reported that the books were all in order as of June 30.

Sister Libbie Parma of the Libbie Parma Trust Fund presented Candice McAdams with a scholarship from the fund. Candice gave a short report of her future plans. Congratulations, Candice and best of luck in the future.

Sister Darlene Engelke said that there will be a sales representative meeting at Lodge 6 on Wednesday, August 23 at 7 p.m. A discussion of a new type of insurance and other important information will be presented.

State Field Representative Brother Jerry Kucera spoke on various subjects. He reported that District Three has 174 applications thus far for this year. He reported that the sales representatives need to sell more insurance.

He also stated that he has a mission to get more new sales representatives. He is leaving pamplets with President Engelke if anyone is interested in look-

ing at them. Brother Kucera presented Brother Milan Dujka with a special Award Plaque "For Quality Service."

Congratulations, Milan.

Supreme Lodge Vice President Gene McBride spoke for a few minutes and he thanked everyone for supporting him being elected as the new Vice President of the Supreme Lodge. He also congratulated D. J. Yates on being selected State Duke for the year 20002001. He also thanked Brother Jerry Kucera for all the hard work he is doing. He said he is working on a mission 2100 trying to get at least 21000 new members each year. He is working on a General Managing Agency Plan in order to try to sell other products besides SPJST products. he also stated that his purpose of being Vice President is to open up communications with everyone.

It was decided by the members present at today's meeting that we will have our Christmas party on Sunday, December 17.

Acting Bookkeeper Sister Mary Alice Langlotz gave the bookkeeping report.

Sister Darlene Engelke read names of candidates for membership. Johnnie Gaidusek, Jr. wrote up George W. Stokes. Randall Dillard, Sr. wrote up Richard Dean Campbell, Joe Andrew Campbell, Janet Lynett Campbell, Colton Joseph Campbell, Krystyna Raeleah Campbell and Clayton James Campbell. Also signed up was Henry Otis Veselka. All members were accepted to Lodge 66. Transferred to Lodge 6 was Ella Macik.

Brother George Pauling reported that he attended the State FAC meeting. He also said that we no longer have a State FAC due to the resignation of the former Fraternal Activities Coordinator. He also said that he is still working on the idea of making telephone calls to members to try to get them to come back to the monthly meetings.

Brother Michael Galler asked members if they wished to have an arts and crafts show on November 4. It was decided to wait until the September 17 meeting to decide if we want an arts and crafts show.

Sister Debbie Galler, Youth Leader, gave the youth report. They had 11 youth and seven adults present today.

She reported that on August 5 at the State Royalty, D.J. Yates was selected duke. On August 6 at the State Youth Achievement Day, we had several winners. In Constructed Items—Douglas Galler, 3rd place; Hobby Kits—Kevin Galler, first place; Sewing—Jodie McAdams, third place; Needlework— Kevin Galler, first place, Jodie McAdams—second place, Mykala Yates—third place; Special Category— Kevin Galler, first place; special door prize—Gena Weeks. She also reported that the youth will participate in the Westfest parade on September 2 and in the Moody parade on September 23.

On August 28, the youth will have an ice cream social and work on the parade floats. At the September 17 meeting, they will celebrate Grandparent's Day here and also at the Moody Nursing Home. The youth will also have a memorial for our deceased members for the past year. Katie Weeks brought the birthday cake and Douglas Galler brought the game.

We are lagging behind in our insurance sales, so let's start spreading the good word about SPJST and get some new members.

Corpus Christi Sokol will be having a fund raiser in October and our lodge will be helping.

We voted to buy some recently published books about the Czechs in Texas. These will be available to be checked out by our members.

The Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center moved a 1906 farmhouse onto our property to be used as a visitor's center, gift shop and small showroom. It will also be the office.

If you go through LaGrange, do stop by and visit. You are most welcome.

We will also be starting the first phase of our amphitheater in October.

With the month of October fast approaching (October is Czech Heritage Month in Texas), I would like to ask members to ask their mayor to proclaim Czech Heritage Month in their town. I have words that you can use as a copy for the proclamation.

81 5 Needville reports on August meeting Lodge

On August 20, 2000, the SPJST Lodge 81of Needville met for their monthly meeting. We had a nice group of people show up for this meeting.

At 12:00 noon, a delicious meal of potluck was served. Thanks to Darlene Blinka and her kitchen committee for getting everything together for us. A special thanks goes to all the wonderful cooks we have in the lodge. The variety of dishes was outstanding and of course, delicious!

President Vincent Newman opened the meeting at 1 p.m. Willie Mae Kuykendall led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. We had a moment of silence for departed member Adeline Bacica. All officers answered the roll call, Added to our sick list is Dorothy Kuban, Louise Newman, Mary Werner, Emil Straznicky and Wesley Werner. We wish everyone a speedy recovery-.

Dear Members and Friends, The Men's Club had their Fiesta Dinner on Tuesday, August 29. Fiesta gave away some groceries and we had a great time. The food was good. It was good to see Bill Hughes with us again.

Do you get tired of my saying "to Coushatta again?" I hope not because I don't get tired of saying it. We have such a great time. We went again on August 23. Our sandwiches and soft drinks were furnished by Lowrina Lindemann and her brother, Edwin Fisbeck. Cookies were furnished by Ora Nell Hassebrock. I want to thank everyone for being so thoughtful in furnishing our refreshments for these

trips. It makes the whole thing so enjoyable.

Alice Bily's son, Paul Bily, passed away on August 24 and was buried on Saturday, September 27. Dona Clooney's sister, Maynette Tarter, passed away on Sunday, August 20 and was buried on Wednesday, August 23 at Sam Houston Veterans Cemetery in San Antonio, Texas. Our prayers are with you both, Alice and Dona.

Who Is It? She was born on September 29, 1929 in northeastern Ohio in a small town called Windsor, Ohio near Cleveland. She graduated from Nelson High School, a little country school in Ohio and attended Kent State University near Akron for three years. She attends St. Jerome's Catholic Church in Spring Branch where she was married in April, 1979.

She has three children from her first marriage—one step daughter, eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She joined the lodge in 1966 and was financial secretary for 13 years. She was on the Entertainment Committee, the Audit Committee, the By-laws Committee, Assistant Youth Leader, Parliamentarian, Second Vice President, Delegate Screening Committee, was a delegate at six conventions, served as treasurer of the Birthday Club and is now secretary.

She serves at St. Jerome's as treasurer of the Altar Society. Who is it? She is Ellen Miculka who is married to Edward. Her three children are Mildred Downey, Martin Gill and Debra Ferris. Her step-daughter is Donna East. She has been pretty busy both at home and at the lodge and we appreciate all you have done, Ellen.

When everyone agrees, there is very little thinking.

92, Fort Worth Ladies Circle reports on Lodge 97, Placedo August meeting invites members to The Fort Worth SPJST Lodge 92 September meeting Lodge

Ladies Circle began their regular meeting at 10:35 a.m. on Tuesday, August 8 at the National Hall with 32 members and three men present.

President Helen Kelner led the Pledge of Allegiance and told Clara Cohen that all the ladies were glad to see her back.

Secretary Betty Lindsay read the minutes for July and they were approved as read. There was no correspondence.

Treasurer Evelyn Spacek gave her Sunshine report for July.

The Hostess-chair substitute will be Mary Ann Kozel and ladies, she will need help from all of us. Hostesses for September will be Mary Ann Kozel, Martha Boenisch and Estelle Hurtik.

New Business Czech Heritage Day will be Saturday, September 16, 2000 which will be an all-day affair. Elma Anderson will be in charge of the pastry booth and she will need volunteers to help serve. Also let her know what pastries you will donate. Florence Greer suggested donating cooking utensils such as pots and pans for the kitchen of SPJST Lodge 92 rather than a fund contribution which as been the custom.

Lodge 97 President Yvonne Garrett would like to invite all members of Lodge 97, Placedo to its September meeting to be held on Saturday, September 14 at the REA Building in Victoria. Sandwiches, chips and ice cream will be served at 6:30 p.m. followed by the meeting.

A representative from Earthworks will be there for a Fall Gardening/Landscaping question and answer session. Door prizes will be awarded.

The youth club will also hold a brief meeting after the speaker. Door prizes will be drawn for the youth.

Our meeting was called to order at 2 p.m. on Sunday, August 13, 2000 by President Keith Kieschnick. We had 28 members and three visitors present.

All stood for the Pledge of Allegiance.

Roll call showed all were present except Fraternal Activities Coordinator Marilyn Spivey. The minutes were read by Secretary Alice Jochen.

Correspondence was read. Lodge 196 is to have the District Five Meeting on Sunday, September 17 and on September 24, Lodge 196 will celebrate its fifth anniversary with a dinner and dance. Dinner will be from 12 noon until 2 p.m. Then dance to the Melodion Band from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.

A letter from the Supreme Lodge advising a good insurance report. All officers' reports were read.

Visitors recognized were Evelyn Mikeska, Larry Pflughaupt and Dorothy Pflughaupt.

Birthdays for August were Ruth Kieschnick and Frank Tumis Anniversary congratulations for August to Elmo and Bernice Walther.

On Wednesday August 23, Lodge 172 held its regular monthly meeting.

The meeting was called to order at 7:30pm followed by the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silent prayer for the sick and departed.

Lodge 180, Burluson reports on Adgust meeting We had our general clean-up on August 26. Now the lodge is ready to go for our September rentals.

Everyone was feverishly chasing those dust bunnies with the dirt devil, especially Joe and Estelle Hurtik, Sr., who came early that morning and had accomplished a lot by the time the rest of the members had arrived. Thank you, Joe and Estelle. Bill Hilcher did a lot of the outside work. It was hot, hot, hot. Thank you, Bill for working out in the hot, miserable weather. Joe and Rhonda Hurtik and John Hilcher, thanks go to you also. They cleaned the floor and chairs. You should have seen the dust bunnies run.

Remember, that we will not have our dance on September 9 due to a hall rental. We hope everyone will look forward to our October dance. Maybe, just maybe, a hint of fall will be in the air or will it be witches, ghouls and ghosts?

West schedules Melodion Band, October garage sale Lodge 196, Houston-West had a nice monthly meeting. We are planning on having a big garage sale -on October 14, 2000. All the proceeds will be donated to a lodge member who that had a horrible house fire.

So, if you have any old things that you have been looking to get rid of, please contact the lodge and we will be happy to get rid of it for you.

The June 2000 meeting will be on the June 20 at 7:30 p.m. We moved it so that we would not interfere with Father's Day. On September 24, 2000, we are having the Melodion Band from the Czech Republic come to the lodge.

Members on the sick list we knowledge of were Mrs. Pearl in a Houston hospital, Mrs. Olga recovering from surgery in her ho:rie, Mr. Leland Maeckol with his sisters and Mr. Jessie Macat in the nursing home. Wishes for speedy recoveries for all.

Sister Bertha Podhrasky relayed a hello to our members from Miroslav Chodl. His band should be here for their first engagement at the Westfest, the first weekend in September, that is, if they get their visas. Sister Sylvia Laznovsky also took the trip to the Czech Republic.

Correction: The family of Mrs. Milton Laznovsky, her daughter and children from France, were guests of Sister Vlasta Laznovsky.

A Dog Story I read this article in the Dallas Morning News by Matt Weitz. This touched my heart: Bring home a puppy, train it, love it, then send it away to help the blind.

This happens all the time at Puppy Raisers. The people who are training these doggies are raising them to give away and that in a little less than a year, most of the tails here will wag quicker to the cadences of another voice and yearn for the touch of another hand.

CCCH hosts fifth annual gala fund raiser On August 18, Houston's Warwick Hotel was the setting for the Czech Cultural Center Houston's, A Night of Czech Music, Dinner, Dance V The organization's fifth annual fund raiser to benefit its 4.5 million-dollar capital campaign was emceed by well-known television personality, Kathie Turner. Honored guest of the evening was Mr. William E. Bill Souchek, longtime Kinkaid school educator and entrepreneur par excellence.

The La Fontaine ballroom with 400 plus guests enthusiastically conveyed to him a roomful of love and respect for his longtime contributions to Czech heritage history and language.

Charles Saunders, Esq., Development Chairman, announced Houston Endowment's grant for construction of the center in the Museum district at the same time asking the Czech community and others for a challenge-matching grant.

In Memoriam Expression of Sympathy We, the members of Lodge 35, Elk, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of our departed brother, WILLIE H. ADAMEK, 85, of Elk who died August 16, 2000 in a Temple hospital. Willie was the son of Mr. and mrs. William Jerry Adamek who lived near Mart. Mr. Adamek was a farmer and lived in the Elk area.

During World War II, Willie served with the U.S. Army Signal Corps attached to the Fifth Air Force. He served four years and nine month and was honorably discharged on December 13, 1945 as a Technician Fifth Grade. He was a member of SPJST Lodge 35, Elk. Graveside services were held at SPJST Pavelka Cemetery with Reverend Steve Heyducek officiating.

Willie was preceded in death by his parents.

Mrs. Bedrich died Tuesday, August 15, 2000 in a Temple nursing home.

She was born in Zabcikville and spent her life in the area. She was a member of the Home Demonstration Club, Ocker Brethren Church Christian Sisters, Seaton Senior Citizens, SPJST at Lodge 24, Cyclone and taught Sunday School at Ocker Brethren Church where she was a member. She was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Bedrich in 1993 Survivors are two sons, Johnnie Bedrich of Lake Jackson and Alvin Bedrich of Seaton; one daughter, Lorene Reno of Grandbury; one sister, Marie Evans of New Braunfels; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Survivors include one son, Frank D. Surovik, III of Lyons; three daughters and two sons in-law, Annie Daniels and Adele and T.C. Houston of Cooks Point and Agnes and Raymond Dehart of Bryan; 14 grandchildren; 22 greatgrandchildren; 13 great-great-grandchildren; and one great-great-greatgranddaughter.

Funeral services were held on Monday, August 7, 2000 at 1 p.m. at Salem Lutheran Church in Welcome with Reverend Walter Schindehette officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Platte passed away Friday, August 4 in a Baytown nursing home after a lengthy illness.

Born June 15, 1916 in Welcome, she was the daughter of the late Theodore and Lillie (Eickoff) Thielemann. She attended Concordia Schools at Welcome and married Wilson Platte on January 11, 1933 in Welcome. She was a homemaker and a seamstress for Columbus clothing, Joel Frank and Nets Tiny Tots in Brenham before she retired.

An active member of Salem Lutheran Church and the Bleiblerville-Nelsonville SPJST Lodge 201, she was a lifetime resident of the Industry area and had lived the last six years with her daughter in Baytown after her husband's death on December 30, 1993.

Survivors include a daughter and son in-law, Alberta and Warren Tassin of Baytown; three grandsons, Danny and wife, Betsy Tassin of Baytown, Donald and wife, Kathleen Tassin of Highlands and Rayanon and wife Stephanie Tassin of Early; six greatgrandchildren, Kerey, Jeremy, Aaron and Evan Tassin, Amy Graves and Leslie Rogers; two sisters, Levirna Winkelmann of Cleveland, Lillie Mae and Husband Herbert Aschenbeck of Columbus; two brothers, Alvin and wife Anita Thielemann of Bryan, Leslie Thielemann of Bryan; also numerous nieces and nephew.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was also preceded in death by a son, Cornelson Platte; four brothers, Alfred, Theo, Jr., Edmund and Erwin Thielemann and one sister, Alitha Thielemann.

He is survived by his wife, Wyonda Buckner Johnson; son, Paul; daughter, Teri; and granddaughter, Staci King.

Following World War II, Bubba served in the National Guard and then was employed for a time in the radio department of the DPS in Austin. In the early 1960s, he joined his brothers, Arville and Arbie and their sister, Ruby Johnson Rivers, in the family machine shop business, A.E. Johnson and Sons. He was a skilled designer and electrician.

From 1960 to 1968 and then again from1972 to 1978, Bubba served on the Elgin City Council and was Mayor of Elgin from 1978 to 1982. He was a member of the Elgin Volunteer Fire Department, a Masonic Lodge Member and coached little league ball teams. He also gave much of his time and energy to the organizing and building of the Elgin SPJST hall. The large ceiling light which hangs over the center of the SPJST hall dance floor is an example of his creative skills.

Many Elginites will remember the mechanical Christmas decorations that he created and displayed on his lawn-the waving Santa Clauses, one in a rocket ship and another in a moving train etc.

In spite of failing health, he remained active and interested in his lifelong pursuits. One of his greatest joys was to regularly visit his nephews, Brent and Jay Johnson, at their manufacturing business. His advice and encouragement will be greatly missed. Deer hunting on the Walter Franklin lease in Llano, Texas was also one of his most cherished pastimes.

The family wishes to sincerely recognize and thank his doctors, David Morris and David Pederson, his physician's assistant, Joanie Houghart and all of the nursing staff of the CC Unit of the Austin Heart Hospital.

Visitations were held on Monday, August 7, 2000, from 6:30-8 p.m., at the Newby Funeral Home.

Arthur Johnson's funeral was held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, August 8, 2000, at the Newby Funeral Home in Elgin, with burial in the Elgin Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.

His passing left a void in the hearts of his children, Paul and Teri; granddaughter, Staci; brothers, Arville and Arbie; numerous ilieces; and nephews, but none greater than that of his loving wife of 42 years, Wyonda.

In life and in memory, their "Bubba" was always loved and never forgotten.

Kevin was born in Texas in the LaBahia Community on August 6, 1921 and moved to Houston in 1946 after four years of service in the U.S. Army. Jake was an active and faithful member at Zion Lutheran Church for over 50 years. He founded Jake's Egg Company, now known as Jake's Finer Foods and recently celebrated more than 54 years in business. He was also co-owner of a family partnership, Jacob Bros. Ranch, Carmine, Texas.

He was extremely active in many professional and community organizations; member and past president of the Texas Poultry Federation and recipient of their prestigious Golden Feather Award; past president and director of Texas Egg Council; member of Texas Department of Agriculture Egg Marketing Advisory Board; associate member of Gulf Coast Retailers, Texas Restaurant Association, Hotel-Motel Association and Texas Chef's Association; director of Capital Bank; past president and active member of Greater North Houston Kiwanis Club; member of Timbergrove Civic Club, SPJST Lodge 88, Houston and Sons of Hermann Lodge 100.

Visitation was Wednesday, August 2, 3 to 9 p.m. at Pat H. Foley Funeral Home, 1220 W. 34th Street, Houston.

Funeral services were on Thursday, August 3 at 11 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church, 3606 Beauchamp, Houston with Pastor Don Carlson officiating.

District Five presents Youth Achievement Day results

not only show their skills and talent, but in relating to each other in competition. They still remain very good friends. We adults could take a lesson from them.

There are so many, many people who helped to make this such a great day not only for the youth, but also for me, my Assistant DYC Robert Castillo is always there for the youth and wherever I need him. Thank you, Robert. To the parents, thank you. Keep up this good rapport you have with your child. It means so much to them to really know you support them one hundred percent.

I thank each and everyone of the youth and Lodge 88's President Clara Broz for seeing that this event was very special to everyone.

Everyone came out a winner regardless of placement in the various competitions.

Dear Members, Congratulations go out to those participants in this year's District Five Youth Achievement Day. This wonderful event for the district youth was hosted by Lodge 88, Houston.

While we were down in numbers, the participation and enthusiasm was great amongst everyone.

Thank yous go out to Kristen Bender. She was the Master of Ceremonies of this event.

Thanks, too, to all of the district officers, Fred Buri and Carolyn Filipp sang the Czech and National Anthems; and thanks to District Five President Evelyn Mikeska who gave an inspirational talk to the youth saying they were all winners.

Many thanks to all the youth leaders and assistants who worked so hard to make this day a great one for the youth.

Thanks, also, to Lodge 88 for preparing a nice meal to help keep our strength going. Thanks to our newly elected District Five Directorelect Larry Pflughaupt for being there and overseeing the final results of the Tabulation Committee and their hard work. To the judges, all I can say is I am glad it was you doing the judging it was most difficult I'm sure.

Youth Club members accept special assignment Youth Club members of Lodge 25, Ennis accepted a special assignment from Lodge 25 President Linda Trojacek. The youth went to the farm of Johnnie and Margaret Krajca and held a special fire burning ceremony for a worn and faded American flag on July 3, 2000.

Youth Club member reviews summer Dear Readers, This summer was very exciting for me in the youth club. First, I got to go to Leaders-In-Training Camp in LaGrange, Texas. I learned the many ways to be a leader in different situations. After that, I attended Youth Achievement Day in Fort Worth. I entered many categories and won first place on a picture I drew of a deer. I also entered a table that I made from a tree and won second place.

Finally, I went to Camp Val Verde and helped out as an LIT. I saw many of my friends there from LIT camp and from YAD and we all had lots of fun on the activities and especially the obstacle course. I am looking forward to seeing everyone at State YAD on August 6 and I hope I win.

Lodge 30, Taiton

Youth Club member likes being active Dear Vestnik Readers, I am now a member of SPJST Lodge 30 in Taiton. I will be six on the 19th. I went to State Youth Achievement Day with my family. We had a good time. We stayed in a nice hotel with a swimming pool inside. On Sunday, we went to the YAD. I really like to watch the kids sing and dance and do skits. I really liked the pizza for lunch. I saw all the things the kids made with the play dough. I sure hope they have play dough next year when I can enter.

I am very happy that Megan Marcaurele from our lodge won the queen contest. I am very happy also that the kids from our lodge who won so many of the pretty ribbons and trophies. I would like to have some of those next year. I am glad that T.J. Drapela from our lodge won the scholarship.

I am already thinking about what I will do for next year.

Academy Youth Club members receive competition awards The August meeting of Lodge 177 Youth Club was called to order at 2 p.m. on Sunday, August 13 by President Sara Wagner. Courtney Wagner led the Pledge of Allegiance.

We had eight members and two adults present.

hristmas Ornament Contest Guidelines C

Contest Date Christmas ornaments will be judged at the district fall meeting and fun day.

—SPJST-

We will be having a fund raiser during the Bartlett Friendship Fest on September 16. We will also be participating in the parade. We will be selling sausage wraps, chips, drinks, baked goods and novelty items. We need each member to donate a 12pack of soft drinks or water and baked goods. All members also need to help work the booth.

The District Two Fall Meeting will be September 17 at Taylor. The Christmas ornament contest is held then. Everyone is encouraged to participate.

The District Two trip will be October 21. We will be chartering buses to Six Flags.

On August 5, 2000, the king and queen competition was held. Lodge 107 and District Seven were represented by King Anthony Sears, Jr., Brandon Korus, Queen Kara Morrisey, Duchess Christa Dippel.

All of these youth worked hard on their crafts, talent and speeches and did a wonderful job. I am proud of you all.

A quick reminder our Christmas ornament contest will be on Sunday, September 10, 2000 at our hall beginning at 10:30 a.m. A meal will be available. Members are asked to bring a dessert.

A longtime volunteer and supporter of Czech heritage and culture, Brother Hanus was acknowledged for his commitment service to others, including his country in wartime. The youth symphony Primavera is one of the top orchestras in the Czech Republic. It has repeatedly won first place in the national competition of youth symphonies. These young musicians have performed throughout Europe and will be touring Texas this fall, including a visit to Temple, cosponsored by the SPJST and Temple College. Primavera is a classical string orchestra and is represented by 25 students, ages 12 through 18, of the primary music and arts school Na Strezine, Hradec Kralove.

The group will be performing at the Temple College Auditorium on Saturday, November 4 at 6 p.m. Admission to the concert is free.
