Thursday, November 11 is Veterans Day, a time to honor all those who have unselfishly served in our armed forces, risking so much to preserve our nation's high ideals and hopes for the future.

With that thought in mind, may we also take this as an opportunity to salute the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), a federally chartered non-profit organization, which is observing its 100th anniversary this year. For nearly a century, the VFW has been helping our nation's veterans by providing programs and services to strengthen comradeship, foster patriotism and perpetuate the memory and history of our fallen soldiers.

Many SPJST members also belong to the VFW. It's a winwin combination that works well especially when we work together.

Thanks to the VFW for the good work they do . . . and thanks, too, to the VFW for the Veterans Day article which appears on page eight of this week's Vestnik.

Keep Those Listings Coming If you're a member and you've got a business - big or small - get it listed in the Year 2000 SPJST Member Services Directory. The Year 2000 Directory, which will be published in January, provides a comprehensive listing of SPJST sales representatives and free listings to members who are in a position to provide various products and services to other SPJST members.

In addition to these free listings, members will also have the opportunity to purchase additional advertising space as a way to further promote your business. The price for a standard business card size advertisement or "coupon," will be $25. Advertising revenues will help to defray the cost of printing.

Since the first SPJST Member Services Directory was published in 1995, it has consistently increased in size. In 1999, the directory included more than 600 business listings, ranging from accountants and auto mechanics to musicians, beauticians and physicians.

Seasonal businesses and part-time businesses are all invited to participate in the directory.

Only those listings which are deemed "questionable" or those which promote life insurance or other products available through the SPJST, will not be printed in the directory.

Texas Voters Endorse House Joint Resolution (HJR) - 4 By a margin of less than four percent, Texas voters endorsed HJR-4 at the polls on November 2. The actual vote was 482,402 voting in favor and 446,700 against. In passing the amendment, wording that an organization would have to engage in purely charitable functions in order to qualify to receive exemptions from ad valorem taxation will be stricken from the Texas Constitution.

Passage of the amendment could pave the way for various organizations, including some SPJST lodges, to qualify for property tax exemptions. This, of course, will depend on how the amendment is regulated and interpreted by local county tax appraisal offices. Additional information related to this legislation will be presented as it becomes available.

SPJST Sweeps Scrapbook, Poster Contests at TFC State King Paxton Davies and State Queen Colette Kenney and the dance and beseda groups from Lodge 30, Taiton presented their state-winning performances at Texas Fraternal Congress on October 23 in Houston.

SPJST scrapbooks from Lodges 9, Snook; 17, New Tabor; 29, Taylor; 66, Waco; 160, San Angelo; 88, Houston; 30, Taiton; and 107, Floresville; and 177, Academy and SPJST posters from Lodges 9; 29, Taylor; 160, San Angelo; 30, Taiton; and 107, Floresville competed with other fraternals for first through third place awards. I had an opportunity to look at all of these scrapbooks and posters. They are really good, and I know that countless hours were spent on them. Thanks for preserving SPJST's memories!

Youth Club Officers' Elections Youth clubs elect officers in conjunction with the adult lodge's elections. Elections are held for officers and committee chairmen. Installation of officers should be in either December or January. New officers and committee chairmen take office at the June, 2000, meeting. The newlyelected officers will attend the youth club officers' workshop in January.

Complete information on officers and elections is in the current rule book.

2000-2001 Rule Book Updates The Supreme Lodge met in October to consider the DYC's recommendations for the 2000-2001 SPJST Youth Program. The recommendations that the Supreme Lodge approved will appear in a future Vestnik. My thanks

to Director Krizan who informed me of these decisions. These new rule book updates will take effect June 1, 2000.

2000 SPJST Camp T-Shirt Design Contest Youth club members are encouraged to enter the 2000 Camp T-Shirt Design Contest. The theme is "SPJST—The Next Millennium and Beyond."

Contest deadline is January 31. All participants receive 20 merit points and a certificate. Complete rules are in the current rule book. For an entry form, see your youth leader or call me.

SPJST Motto Contest The SPJST Motto Contest is here.

SPJST youth members ages six to high school senior are encouraged to send in an original, rhyming motto that contains 50 words or less. The subject of the motto is SPJST and SPJST Youth Clubs. Mottos will be judged on originality and creativity, grammar and appeal. Mottos become the property of SPJST and will not be returned.

Entries must be received no later than January 31, 2000. The contest winner will receive a $500 savings bond. All participants will receive 20 merit points and a participation certificate.

Youth Club Membership Drive The Supreme Lodge approved a youth club membership drive. All new youth club members from October 15, 1999 to May 31, 2000 will qualify your youth club for membership drive awards. Awards will be presented at the 2000 State YAD in August. More details, including award information. are coming soon.

SPJST Denim Roundup Youth club members are encouraged to recommend new members to the SPJST and earn "denim certificates" which can be redeemed for denim caps, coolers, vests, shirts, and jackets.

The roundup ends December 31.

100 Pennies Scholarship Drive The 100 Pennies Scholarship Drive continues through March 31. Youth club members who donate $2 or more receive 20 merit points, and youth club members who donate $5 or more also receive a certificate. These scholarships make a big difference in our SPJST members' lives.

Season's Greetings! The holidays are just around the corner, and we at the SPJST Home Office are getting ready. I invite you to capture the moments of the season at the Holiday Open House on Monday, December 6 at the SPJST Home Office, located at 520 North Main in Temple. The Open House follows the Temple Christmas Parade, which begins at 6:30 p.m.

Holiday music, Christmas stories and horse-drawn carriage rides are planned. Visitors can share their Christmas wishes with Santa and Mrs. Claus.

Sweet treats and warm beverages will be served.

I also invite you to visit the SPJST Home Office and Museum this holiday season. Beginning November 29, the SPJST Youth Christmas Tree will be displayed in the Home Office lobby. The tree will feature ornaments designed and created by SPJST Youth Club members from across Texas. The SPJST Museum will display a Czech Christmas tree with traditional decorations. The tree will be located in the Museum's Pioneer Room, which features a replica of the first Czech home built in Texas.

Guided museum tours are also available during regular museum hours, or by special arrangement.

The museum is open each weekday from 8 a.m. until noon and from 1 to 5 p.m. Admission is free of charge.

Lodge etters Section Lodge 4, Hallettsville gymnast shares World Games experience Dear Members, Our lodge met Sunday, October 24, 1999 at the American Legion Tap Room at 2 p.m. with President Joe Siptak presiding. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited.

Resolution Committee Chairman Gaynelle Chudej read a resolution of sympathy for our departed member, Wilhemina Appelt Kolos.

An interesting program was then presented by Anna Gallia who participated in the World Games in Sun City, South Africa. Anna won a bronze medal in the double mini-trampoline event. She spoke about her trip and had a display of various items from South Africa and a scrapbook. Her mother, Roseanne who also attended, showed a video she had taken including Anna's winning performance and of her receiving her medal which everyone got to see. Many thanks to Anna and her mother, Roseanne for sharing this memorable trip with us.

The meeting continued with roll call of officers which showed assistant Youth Leader Susan Siptak absent.

Secretary Margaret Smotek read the minutes to the last meeting.

Correspondence followed. Treasurer Helen Zabransky and Fraternal Activities Coordinator Lillie Balusek gave their reports.

It was voted to discontinue the youth door prize since they will be meeting at a different time.

Sunshine Chairman Elsie Mascheck thanked Margaret Smotek for taking charge of the October bingo party for the residents at Stevens Convalescent Center since she was unable to attend.

Members assisting were Mary Matula, Jo Ann Matula, Lillie Balusek and Evelyn Sklar. A get well card was sent to Valeria Motal.

The October, November and December birthdays will be honored at the December meeting.

Old Business President Siptak reported on the successful District Six Fall social and meeting hosted by Lodge 97, Placedo on October 10.

Also a report was given by Wilma Wagner of the Incentive Program Planning Committee. It was decided to honor our 1998 members at Werner's Restaurant in Shiner on Sunday, November 14 beginning at 11:30 a.m. and dinner at 12:30 p.m. followed by a meeting.

It was voted to book the American Legion Tap Room for our meetings beginning in January.

A location for our December meeting and Christmas party was discussed.

Patsy and Helen Zabransky were appointed to check on several places.

A committee composed of Margaret Smotek, Mary Matula and Victoria C. Orsak were named to select our Fraternalist of the Year.

It was voted to give $50 to the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center, Inc. in La Grange.

The meeting adjourned followed by a delicious lunch with President Joe Siptak giving the meal prayer.

The door prize winners were Patsy Zabransky and Nicholas Vahalik.

Our next meeting will be Sunday, November 14 at Werner's Restaurant in Shiner following the noon meal honoring our 1998 members. Election of officers will also be held and door prizes given.

Czech celebration offers historical insight, fellowship and food SPJST Czech Heritage Day was a huge success. Everyone left with their heads full of the history of the Czech Republic. What a great documentary that was presented by Terry W. Loessin. A brief outline of the history of the Czech Republic follows: • 10th through 16th centuries: During this time, Bohemia and Moravia, like most of the European Continent, were part of the Holy Roman Empire.

• 16th through 19th centuries:

Austria-Hungary, the powerful Hapsburg Dynasty of Austria, takes both Bohemia and Hungary at this time.

• 1914 through 1918: World War I, as part of the Austria-Hungary Empire, the region of Bohemia and Moravia are drawn into the war as part of the central powers versus the allies.

• 1932 through 1945: The rise of Hitler and World War II was witnessed.

The Sudetenland was a region of Czechoslovakia of mainly ethnic, German-speaking peoples. Hitler demanded this region be given to Germany.

• 1946 through 1989: This was the Communist Period. A year after World War II ends, the newly formed Communist party wins 38 percent of the votes in Czechoslovakia.

• 1938 to present: A new beginning in 1989 as the first government in 41 years without communist majority takes power.

• March 1990: The country is renamed the Czech and Slovak Federal Republics.

• July 1992: Havel fails to win reelection. His bid is blocked by a Slovak-led coalition. Slovakia declares sovereignty and a desire for independence. Czech and Slovak leaders agree to peaceful division of Czechoslovakia into two states.

• January 1993: The split into two separate states occurs—the Czech Republic and Slovakia Republic are now official. Vaclav Havel returns to office as President of the Czech Republic.

Terry also went through each phase and gave a history of each one with a slide presentation and overhead project showing the maps of the areas as they were then and are now. After the presentation, Terry had a question and answer period with the audience.

The next speaker was Joe Daniel Vrabel, owner and editor of the only Czech weekly newspaper in the state of Texas called the Nasinec headquartered in Granger. He gave a history of the paper and its beginning. Joe Daniel spoke of how it is a struggle to keep this Czech paper and the Czech language and its heritage going. He spoke of the younger generation and how so few speak Czech and even fewer number read the Czech language. If we, the Czech people, do not continue to promote the Czech language and the

Czech culture, it, too, will be lost. If you are a Czech descendant, it is up to you to help carry this heritage into the future.

Next, Dorothy Pechal, SPJST Museum Curator from the Supreme Lodge, brought a display of Czech artifacts, which was thoroughly enjoyed by all. The items brought back a lot of memories for everyone. Also, Henry and Geraldine Heish shared their collection of Czech books and other Czech articles. Guests and members also brought pictures, books, dishes etc. to share with everyone. This was followed by an array of Czech pastry and refreshments, which was served by our SPJST youth club.

I want to extend a special thank you to everyone who contributed to make this event so special. Not only to those who gave of their time to put it all together, but also to those who took time out of their day to share with us.

Without all of you, this wonderful day could not have happened.

A moment of silence was held for Sid Pokladnik. He will be missed by everyone here at Lodge 25 and surrounding lodges.

Beyersville sponsors fifth annual Pokorny-Polanka tarok tournament The Fifth Annual Pokorny-Polanka Tarok Tournament will be held on Saturday, December 4, 1999 at SPJST Lodge 48, Beyersville, Texas.

Registration begins at 8:00 a.m. and play begins at 9:00 a.m.

Registration fee is $15 per person and in-cludes the noon meal, snacks and prizes. There will be six rounds of play. We have decided to add a new twist to the tournament this year. Prizes

will be awarded as usual to the top winners plus we will award ten cents a chip in increments of 10 chips. Thus, if you have a score of 769 at the end of the day, you would have 160 chips to the good times ten cents; which would give you $16.

Playing rules are to be the same as SPJST. Please pre-register by December 1 to help us estimate food supply; however, late entries are still welcome.

Christi approves donation to Shriners The regular monthly meeting was held on Sunday, October 17, with President Jerry Sijansky presiding. All the officers were present. All sang Happy Birthday to Secretary Helen Pavelka who had a birthday on October 16. Also best wishes go to the Jerry and Milly Elzner who celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary on October 9.

The minutes of the previous meeting were read by Secretary Helen Pavelka and were accepted as read. Treasurer Milly Elzner gave the financial report which was accepted as given. She also read thank you letters from Huntington's Disease and Red Cross for the lodge donation in the past months.

Fraternal Activities Coordinator Jerry Elzner reminded members to send the Vestnik reply cards back (which were recently received) if they wish to continue receiving the Vestnik.

He said the October 23 Make a Difference Day is getting a lot of publicity and that Lodge 79 members will be working with Sokol at the hall.

There is a job for everyone to do. The October 31 dance is generating a lot of publicity also. Many visitors are expected. Advance tickets are $6 per person and are available from officers.

The tickets will be $7 donation at the door. He reminded members to attend the District Seven meeting on November 7. He invited everyone to come for the graduation of the Czech class on October 21. He said everyone is welcome to come for the District Seven Fraternal Workshop on November 1 at the hall.

President Jerry Sijansky said we will elect the six delegates for the convention at the annual meeting in December. There was a discussion about the eligibility and what the requirements are to be eligible.

Sister Edna Voldan was named as our 1999 Fraternalist of the. Year.

The next meeting is on Sunday, November 21. We will have a turkey and dressing dinner at 1 p.m. The meeting will follow the meal. The lodge will furnish the meat. Sister Lera Nemecek volunteered to make the turkey and dressing. It will be good.

She makes a delicious dressing.

Members are asked to bring side dishes such as veggies, salads or desserts.

Wednesday, November 10, 1999---VESTNIK/7 The October donation of $50 goes to Shriners Burn Unit which does a lot of good work for those who need help.

There were several door prizes donated by Brother Jerry Elzner for which we thank him. The lucky winners were Clara Valla, Donna Havranik, Edna Voldan, Carrie Veselka, Helen Pavelka and Della Elzner.

The meeting was adjourned at 3 p.m. Everyone then enjoyed the good food and the social time.

79, Corpus Christi selects '99 Fraternalist Lodge

At our October 1999 meeting Edna Voldan was chosen as our Fraternalist of the Year. Edna is a worthy candidate for all she does for the lodge and community.

We had five surrounding cities and two counties proclaim Czech Heritage Month.

Our participation in Make a Difference Day brought out 23 of our members. We cleaned, washed, scrubbed, mowed, trimmed etc. at Sokol Hall. It looks nice—just in time for our fund raiser on October 31.

A good meal was prepared by the kitchen crew—thanks! Everyone brought a healthy appetite.

The fund raiser is generating a lot of enthusiasm. Come join us October 31 for a fun day.

For our November meeting, the lodge will provide turkey and ham, you please bring a side dish. Let Lera Nemecek know how many are coming so that we can have a number to work with. Just think—it is time to vote for our delegates to the next convention.

Youth Leader Bessie Petr reported the youth Beseda circles danced at the Texas State Fair on Heritage Day. The rain was coming down as they danced on stage, but it didn't faze the enthusiasm they had as they entertained the folks who were brave enough to watch as it rained.

A Celebration of Life On September 27, 1999, relatives, friends, members of SPJST and acquaintances bid Lodge 84 member Sid Pokladink good-bye for the last time. At 12:30, the same day a celebration of life was held at Lodge 84 Brother Sid would have been pleased to see so many, many attend. Many musicians and the band he organized, The Czech Concert Orchestra, played during dinner and throughout the afternoon. Many recalled happenings and lodge activities that always included Brother Sid getting up from the audience saying, "Excuse me, but could I say a few words on behalf of our lodge?" And off he went on a roll and then ending his speech with words to the effect, "SPJST is number one with me; let's continue to make it even better."

Lodge 88, Houston, is now accepting applications for scholarships for the 2000 school year. These forms can be picked up at the lodge office at 1435 Beall Street, Houston, Texas, 77008 between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Monday through Friday and returned to the Lodge 88 office by December 31, 1999.

To qualify, a student must be a member of Lodge 88 for a period of at least two years. The student must be paying local lodge dues and has to apply during the first semester of his senior year in high school with definite plans to enter college in the fall of the year 2000.

Dear members and friends, We had Czech Day at our lodge on Sunday, October 31st. It was a wonderful success. There was roast pork, sausage and sauerkraut dinners with all the trimmings. Performances were by the Lodge 88 Concert Orchestra, Choral Club, Heritage Singers and Folk. Dancers. We had raffles, a live auction, silent auction and home made ice cream made by our youth. Of course the Birthday Club had their cakes, pies and kolaches for dessert.

Dance music was provided by Pat Veit.

We had a home made kolache contest, with first prize going to Helen Kubicek. The former Mr. and Mrs. Czech Day, Myriam and Gary Zalesky, gave up their crowns to the new Mr. and Mrs. Czech Day, Clara and Johnny Broz. Congratulations, Clara and Johnny.

Workers in the kitchen preparing the food on Czech Day were Gary Blahuta, John Broz, Danny Rader, Edwin Gerlich, Paul Beck and Johnny Broz.

Lodge 88, Houston to feature movies from the Czech Republic Lodge 88, Pokrok Houston, 1435 Beall Street, Houston, Texas, will feature Czech movies from Czech Republic to be shown Mondays in November-1, 15, 22 and 29 at 7:30 p.m. There will be no admission. Thanks to the Harris County Czech Heritage Society and a special thanks to Mrs. Lillian Pivonka, who not only for several years has been teaching Czech at Sokol Houston, but also for the third year has arranged and presented Czech movies at SPJST 88 free to everyone. Her activity is the best way to preserve and keep the Czech heritage alive.

We wish to thank all the people who did their part in making Czech Day a success.

We were glad to see Howard Leshikar, President of the Supreme Lodge there, also.

Helen Hegwood received a plaque from Lodge 88 for Fraternalist of the Year which was presented by President Clara Broz. Congratulations, Helen.

The Men's Club invited their spouses to have breakfast with them on Tuesday, November 2nd. It really was nice and greatly appreciated. Roberta Johnson is taking Melanie Spies' place as secretary in our Lodge 88 office.

On Sunday, October 24, Mary and Victor Stanek celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. It was very well done and all who attended had a great time. The lodge was really decorated beautifully. The foyer was decked out in pictures of the family. The City Polka Boys played for our dancing enjoyment.

On October 27, a bus load of Lodge 88 members went to Coushatta, again, to gamble. We had a wonderful time.

Again, some won, some didn't. Yours truly did real well for a change.

Lillie Spies finally came home from the hospital on October 27th. We are glad her broken hip has healed so well.

Welcome home, Lillie. Her nephew, Leon Gerlich from Middletown, Colorado, was in Houston recently to visit Lillie. He had been to a reunion at A&M University.

Adella and Henry Kite's son in-law, Tommy Grabarkwitz, passed away on October 23rd, and was buried on October 26th. He was the husband of Sharon Kite Grabarkwitz. Please remember them in your prayers.

A Veterans Day Tribute

Dorothy and Anton Fabrygel have a new grandson born on October 26th.

He is Cameron Joseph Woodall born to their daughter, Kimberly and her husband, Charles Woodall who live in Huntsville, Texas. He weighed in at 7 and one half pounds and was 19 inches long. Congratulations, Dorothy and Anton. My husband, Calvin, and I have a new great-granddaughter. She is Erin Nicole Oakley, born to Amy and Chris Oakley in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. Her grandparents are Cynthia Orsag Beck and Don Beck.

That makes three great-grandchildren for my husband, Calvin, and me.

Who Is It?

In 1921, an unknown World War I American soldier was buried in Arlington National Cemetery. This site, on a hillside overlooking the Potomac River and the city of Washington, became the focal point of reverence for America's veterans.

Similar ceremonies occurred earlier in England and France, where an unknown soldier was buried in each nation's highest place of honor (in England, Westminster Abbey; in France, the Arc de Triomphe).

These memorial gestures all took place on November 11, giving universal recognition to the celebrated ending of World War I fighting at 11 a.m., November 11, 1918 (the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month). The day became known as "Armistice Day." Armistice Day officially received its name in America in 1926 through a Congressional resolution. It became a national holidiay 12 years later by similar Congressional action. If the idealistic hope had been realized that World War I was "the War to end all Wars," November 11 might still be called Armistice Day. But only a few years after the holiday was proclaimed, war broke out in Europe. Sixteen and one-half million Americans took part. Four hundred seven thousand of them died in service — more than 292,000 in battle.

Armistice Day Changed to Honor All Veterans Realizing that peace was equally preserved by veterans of WW II and Korea, Congress wa's requested to make this day an occasion to honor those who have served America in all wars.

In 1954 President Eisenhower signed a bill proclaiming November 11 as Veterans Day. On Memorial Day 1958, two more unidentified American war dead were brought from overseas and interred in the

plaza beside the unknown soldier of World War I. One was killed in World War II and the other in the Korean War. In 1973, a law passed providing interment of an unknown American from the Vietnam War, but none was found for several years. In 1984, an unknown serviceman from that conflict was placed alongside the others.

To honor these men, symbolic of all Americans who gave their lives in all wars, an Army honor guard, The Third U.S. Infantry (The Old Guard), keeps day and night vigil. A law passed in 1968 changed the national commemoration of Veterans Day to the fourth Monday in October. It soon became apparent, however, that November 11 was a date of historic significance to many Americans. Therefore, in 1978 Congress returned the observance to its traditional date.

National Ceremonies Held at Arlington The focal point for official, national ceremonies for Veterans Day continues to be the memorial amphitheater built around the Tomb of the Unknowns. At 11 a.m. on November 11, a combined color guard representing all military services executes "Present Arms" at the tomb. The nation's tribute to its war dead is symbolized by the laying of a presidential wreath. The bugler plays "taps." The rest of the ceremony takes place in the amphitheater.

Every year the President of the United States urges all Americans to honor the commitment of our Veterans through appropriate public ceremonies.

She was born on August 25, 1931 in Houston, Texas. She attended Immanuel Lutheran Church and was married there on June 23, 1956. She attended Hogg Junior High School and John H. Reagan Senior High School.

She has four children. After graduation she worked for the National Bank of Commerce and worked there until she married. She stayed at home and raised her children. She became an artist, painting in oil. She was involved in Girl Scouts, on the Houston CB radio team, various church groups, square dancing, Boy Scouts and a support group of sewing enthusiasts. She joined Lodge 88 in November, 1969 when she became a sales representative and in 1998 she became an FIC. She worked in the youth club from 1971 until 1974. From 1981-1983, she served on the Lodge 88 Entertainment Committee. She became a member of the Choral Club in 1988. She served on the Auditing. Committee for 15 years and on the Decorating Committee for five years. She also started the youth dance classes. She served on the Bingo Committee from 1972-98, and is still active in this capacity. She joined the Birthday Club in 1992 and has been a very active member. She has done a lot for the lodge. WHO IS IT? She is Edna Wehring, who is married to Willie Wehring and her four children are Cindy Ann Sherman, Linda Fay Wehring, Gary Wayne Wehring and Debbie Kay Horton.

Lodge 130, Dallas campout set for November 19 - 21 at Fort Parker Lodge 130, Dallas will be taking their annual camping trip November 19-21 to Fort parker State Park in Mexia (817) 562-5751. Directions are as follows: From Dallas, take 1-45 south to Hwy. 14 Richland exit (10-15 miles s. of Corsicana), go through Mexia. The park road is approximately four miles on the right. Entrance fees are as follows: Over 13 $2 per person per day; Age 65 and over $1 per day per person. The annual "passport" is $50 a year and good at any Texas state park for everyone in the car.

• Sunday'morning devotional to give thanks to our creator for all we have to be thankful for.

• Hiking, fishing, games, relaxation, and some good OLE fraternalism the SPJST way.

Reminder: • Each camper needs to remember to help with cooking and cleanup of the area and we should leave it cleaner than we found it. So if you see litter, pick it up (that's also a good project).

• If not able to stay the entire time, please come at your convenience even if it's only for the day because we will miss you if you're not there to share in the fun and fraternalism with us.

• This is a good time to bring a guest to get them to join our lodge and the SPJST and share the fun and fraternalism with us. Just bring extra groceries for guest. This is very important for our lodge to grow, so lets get the word out.

A Thanksgiving luncheon will be hosted by the lodge on Sunday, November 21. Members are asked to bring a side dish and dessert. Lunch will be served at 12:30 p.m. and will be followed by the monthly meeting.

Members are encouraged to bring a friend that might be interested in getting to know more about SPJST. Just a reminder to our members that contributions to the 100 Pennies Scholarship Drive are being accepted Our lodge will match the total donation made by members.

172, Pasadena November, December meeting dates change Lodge

On Wednesday, October 24, 1999 Lodge 172 held their regular monthly meeting.

The meeting was called to order at 7:30 p.m. by President Robert Mayfield followed by the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silent prayer for the sick and departed.

President Mayfield read an article he found on at work telling everyone about the amendments that we will be voting on November 2 especially proposition 4.

President Mayfield wished everyone with a birthday in November a Happy Birthday.

Bands. Scheduled Entertainment Committee Chairman Mary Byers told everyone that she has hired the bands for the first three months of next year. She also mentioned that New Year's Eve tickets will be going on sale Thursday, November 4 and that they will be sold every Thursday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and at the Saturday night dances until New Year's Eve then you will be able to buy them at the door that night.

Robert told everyone that it is time to elect three members from the floor to be on the Nominating Committee.

The three members elected were Bobbye Johnson, Clay Stokley and Vicki Dressler. We also elected three members form the floor to be on the by-laws committee. The three members elected were Tennie Walla, Julius Zella and Lillia Mae Peter.

President Mayfield reminded everyone present that the November and December meeting dates have been changed due to the holidays. The November executive meeting will be on November 3 and the regular meeting will be on November 17. The December executive meeting will be on December 1 and the regular meeting as well as the Christmas party will be on December 15. This is also the day we elect our new officers for 2000.

Lodge 186, Caldwell, Texas October meeting was called to order by President Luksa. Pledge of Allegiance and minutes of previous meeting were read by Grace Moore, being Secretary Haisler was absent. Roll call of officers and trustees was read. Absent were Trustees Borak and Broesche and Secretary Haisler.

A silent moment of prayer for our departed member Mr. Raymond Jurica was given.

All reports were read and approved.

The next meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, November 16, 1999.

204, Stephenville seeking ways to increase meeting attendance Lodge

The regular meeting of Lodge 204 was held at the Golden Corral in Stephenville.

All present enjoyed a good meal and socializing before the business meeting took place.

The main order of business was a discussion on how to get more members to come to meetings.

More efforts need to be taken to see if more members come to the next meeting as it will be election of officers and the present officers would like to hear from the rest of the members, as to how they would like to have the lodge run.

In Memoriam Expression of Sympathy We, the members of Lodge 164, Rio Hondo, wish to express our deepest and most sincere sympathy to the family of our departed sister, MATILDA K. KRUPALA, who passed away at a local nursing home on September 20, 1999 at the age of 93, in Harlingen, Texas. She is preceded in death by her husband, John P. Krupala in 1985; three brothers and four sisters.

She is survived by her sons, Louis P. Krupala of Harlingen, Charles P. Krupala of Lyford, daughter, Aloisie Zdansky of Raymondville; 13 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; one step-great granddaughter; and one stepgreat, great granddaughter; and numer2000. The officers would like to hear from some of the members as to best represent the members at the convention.

Every Little Bit Helps Well, the Lanham area of Hamilton County finally received some rain it was really was needed. It will take more than an inch and a half to break the drought, but every little bit helps.

For some of you old timers, remember listening to radio and hearing these songs?—"God Bless America," "Jeepers Creepers," "Flat Foot Floogie with a Floy Floy," and "Thanks for the Memories." Remember, also some of the movies, as "Robin Hood" with Earl Flynn, "Alexander's Ragtime Band" with Tyron Power and Alice Fay's, "Boy's Town" with Spencer Tracy and Mickey Rooney, "Jezebel" with Betty Davis and "You Can't Take It With You" with Jean Author and James Stewart. Listening to radio, you may have heard "Information Please," "The Bob Hope Show," "Kraft Music Hall" with Bing Crosby and Dick Tracy.

Sewing Circle reports on October meeting Ennis

The Circle met October 14, 1999.

Twenty-three members were present.

Our guests were Willie Skrivanek, Jerry Kohn and Charles Kosarek.

President Sadie Kubin called the meeting to order. After the Pledge of Allegiance, a moment of silence was observed in memory of Sister Otile Haskovec and Mary Honza Kriska.

We extend our sincere sympathy to the bereaved families.

Secretary Vlasta Laznovsky read the minutes. Treasurer Lillie Kosarek read the financial report. Both reports were approved as read.

Funeral Mass was held at St. Helen's Catholic Church in Rio Hondo with Father Terrence Gorski as the celebrant. Interment followed at Mont Meta Memorial Park Cemetery in San Benito, Texas on September 23, 1999.

Pallbearers were grandsons, Gary W. Krupala, Charles Ray Krupala, Dr. James Lee Krupala, Frank Joseph Krupala, John Zdansky, Jr. and nephew Stanley Konarik.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Rudy Garza Funeral Home of Harlingen.

Resolution Committee Gardena Kristof —SPJSTSunshine Chairperson Eleanora Pelzel sent flowers to the funeral of Sister Otile Haskovec and a birthday card to Sister Bertha Podhrasky. A thank you card was read from the family of Sister Steavy Slovak for the flowers sent to the funeral. A thank you card was read from Sister Mary Kubacak for the get-well card and money gift.

Ella Mae Faraizl donated a quilt top.

The quilt will be quilted at our November meeting. Thanks to Jim and Mary Ann Strunc fro donating material to the Circle. A quilt was quilted for Sister Hattie Moucka. Donations were received from Sister Rosie Bednar and Sister Sadie Kubin for having a quilt quilted. Sister Alene Skrivanek donated a money gift to the Circle.

Happy Birthday was sung to the October birthday celebrants. The door prize was furnished by Sister Sylvia Laznovsky and Sister Eleanor Pelzel was the lucky winner.

It was voted that at our December meeting, we will exchange gifts at our Christmas meeting. Bring a gift for no less than $3. Sisters Anne Zvolanek, Bertha Podhrasky, Mary Sebestik and Georgia Tupy sent a hello the the Circle members.

Souls Harbor does use scrap materials; the Helping Hands do not.

Congratulations! Sister Alene and Willie Skrivanek celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on October 22, 1999.

Sister Dorothy and Wesley Prachyl spent two weeks in Rochester Hills, Michigan visiting daughter and son inlaw, Cathy and Bill Cole and grandsons Andrew and Adam.

My pet story will be in my December letter.

Three youth club members anticipating Holiday in the Park and other coming events

The District Two Youth Club will be sponsoring a lock-in after the SPJST State Volleyball Tournament on Saturday, November 13 at Lodge 24, Cyclone, Flag Hall. The lock-in will begin at 7 p.m. on Saturday, November 13 and end at 7 a.m. on Sunday, November 14.

All members are invited and encouraged to attend. We have many exciting things planned for this event.

You won't want to miss it. All members can bring a friend or two to enjoy the evening. Snacks and drinks will be provided. Door prizes will be awarded.

We will be in need of chaperones.

Coming Events

We discussed future dates and functions and on Saturday, December 4, we will meet at Six Flags for Holiday in the Park.

On April 14, 2000 we will meet at Lodge 84 for our District Three LockIn and, on May 30, 2000 all YAD and camp forms are due in because of the convention; we will need them earlier (no late entries). Then on June 2, 3 and 4 will be Leader-in-Training and on June 25 Youth Achievement Day will be held at Lodge 92.

We are still working on dates, but it looks like on July 7, 8 and 9, camp will be held.

Call for Entries SPJST Motto Contest SPJST youth members ages six to high school senior are encouraged to send in an original, rhyming motto that contains 50 words or less. The subject of the motto is SPJST and SPJST Youth Clubs. Mottos will be judged on originality and creativity, grammar and appeal. Mottos become the property of SPJST and will not be returned. Mottos may be handwritten or typed and must be received no later that January 31, 2000.

The contest winner will receive a $500 savings bond. All participants will receive 20 merit points and a participation certificate.

November meeting date changed All Members, This is to let you know that the November meeting of Lodge 177 Academy Youth Club has been rescheduled for Sunday, November 21 at 2 p.m.

The SPJST Volleyball Tournament is on Saturday, November 13 at Bruceville-Eddy. Members in grades 7 through 12 are eligible to participated.

If you are interested in playing, please call me before November 10. Following the. Volleyball Tournament, District Two will be having their annual lock-in. It will be held at Lodge 24, Cyclone, Flag Hall from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.

We were one of the groups chosen to participate in the Lack's Trim-ATree Contest. We will be decorating the tree on Tuesday, November 23 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. so ...

At our November meeting, we will be making Thanksgiving crafts for Scott and White patients and making decorations for the Christmas tree. It will take approximately two hours to conduct the meeting and get the crafts completed. Hope to see everyone in the coming weeks.

The Youth Club of Lodge 66, Waco welcomes three new members—Gena, Tommy and Katie Weeks. They are the children of Kay and Tommy Weeks. The triplets enjoy swimming, sports and gymnsatics. They attend Holy Rosary Catholic School in Arlington, Texas. Their mother as well as their maternal grandparents are long-time members of SPJST Lodge 66.

by President Sara Wagner. We had eight members and five adults present. We welcomed Cory Halpain and Samantha Beck as youth club members.

Old Business We discussed the District Two trip to Fiesta Texas that was held the previous day. We all had a great time.

New Business

Makayla Christine Yates The newest member of the Lodge 66, Waco Youth Club is Makayla Christine Yates.

Makayla is five years onld and the daugher of Jamie and Laurie Yates. She has a brother, Dakota, and a sister Sherrie.

Makayla, who attends Bosqueville Elementary School, enjoys singing, SPJST Youth Club activities, camp and going to Mrs. Bessie's.

We will be having a fund raiser at the Bartlett Friendship Fest. We will be selling barbecue sandwiches, chips, drinks and baked goods. We will also have Frisbees - for sale. We will also be participating in the parade. All youth club members need to donate baked items and drinks and help work during the day.

The District Two Fall meeting is scheduled for September. This is when the Christmas Onrnament contest is.

To help encourage all youth club members to enter, we will be making ornaments after our September meeting.

SPJST youth members ages six to high school senior.

The Rules - Create a tee-shirt design relating to the 2000 theme: "SPJST—The Next Millennium and Beyond" r. Submit entry: Using a black pen or marker, draw your design on an official entry form available from SPJST youth leaders or the address below, or draw your design on an 8 1/2" by 11" sheet of plain, white paper.

Judging September Minutes The September meeting of Lodge 177 Academy Youth Club was called to order on Sunday, September 12 at 2 p.m. by President Sara Wagner. Visitor Michael S. led the Pledge of Allegiance. We had 13 members and four adults present.

The youth were reminded about our fund raiser and parade entry at the Bartlett Friendship Fest on Saturday, September 25 in downtown Bartlett.

All members need to be there by 9 a.m. with their donated goods., The District Two Fall meeting was held on Sunday, September 19 at Cyclone. Don't forget your Christmas ornament.

We are planning on helping the Mother Lodge and the community on Make A Difference Day, October 23.

The meeting was adjourned at 2:34 p.m. Members enjoyed snacks furnished by the Lyons. We worked on Vestnik projects made certificates for Grandparents' Day and made Christmas ornaments.

Our next meeting is scheduled for Sunday, October 10 at 2 p.m. We will be having a Halloween social after the meeting. Hope to see everyone there.

(Fifth in a Series of Six) Society with a Purpose From the outset, SPJST lodge meetings made members feel at home and provided them with the economic security of fraternal life insurance. But, there was much more to the SPJST than that .. .

Through participation in lodge meetings and SPJST conventions, members learned and applied the democratic processes of their newly adopted homeland. They grew to appreciate the value of free speech and to express their opinions. Moreover, they learned how to conduct meetings and the importance of voting. Having learned and adopted these American values, SPJST members became better citizens.

The SPJST served its purpose well. Over the course of the next two generations, American society and lifestyles changed dramatically. Our state and our nation was becoming progressively more industrialized. At the same time,

the country was becoming more urban and less rural. Many people—including the sons and daughters of the early members—moved away from the farms and into the towns and cities. In many cases, they took the SPJST with them.

Thus, it was during this time that many of our urban lodges were established. It was also during this time, in 1953, that the SPJST headquarters moved its state headquarters to Temple.

Once again, the SPJST had an important mission to fulfill—to provide its members with identity and support at a time when life in America was becoming increasingly impersonal and unstable.

The Society served its purpose well. The legacy of these days— the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Homes, youth program and various cultural enrichment programs—including the SPJST Library and Museum— are with us today.
