SPJST posts "qualifying" member certificates written through September Through the first nine months of 1999, sales represenatives wrote "qualifying member certificates," in conjunction with the 1999 Lodge Recognition and Incentive Awards prog ram. "Qualifying certificates" include all term and whole life certificates except for the Modified Whole Life plan and certain annuities.

Lodges participating in the program are working to achieve one of eight achievement awards, each of which is accompanied by a cash prize. To qualify for the awards, lodges must also complete a defined number of fraternal activities, as prescribed in the box at the bottom of this page. —SPJST-

With less than two months to go in the 1999 Lodge Recognition and Incentive Program, this is an excellent time to acknowledge the ongoing efforts of our SPJST sales representaives. These are our brothers and sisters who get out into their local communities and tell the story of the services and benefits offered through the SPJST. Typically, those sales representatives who are the most successful are those who know the best and latest methods for selling fraternal insurance and related financial products. They are are aware of the trends affecting the marketplace and are able to visualize the world of tomorrow so that they can help our members and prospective members meet their financial obligations in the future.

By supporting our volunteer sales force, providing them with leads and conferring with them on our own insurance needs, we are helping to ensure the long-term growth of our fraternal order.

One of the benefits that the SPJST makes available to its members is a competitive scholarship program.

The Scholarship/Grant Program is meant to encourage and assist younger members to further their education and to help them achieve career goals. Applicants must have an active SPJST insurance certificate in force for one year and hold an active certificate for the duration of the scholarship or grant. Likewise, recipients must enter college the fall term following the announcement of their award.

Listings requested for Year 2000 SPJST Member Services Directory If you're a member and you've got a business - big or small - get it listed in the Year 2000 SPJST Member Services Directory. The Year 2000 Directory, which will be published in January, provides a comprehensive listing of SPJST sales representatives and free listings to members who are in a position to provide various products and services to other SPJST members.

In addition to these free listings, members will also have the opportunity to purchase additional advertising space as a way to further promote your business.

The price for a standard business card size advertisement or "coupon," will be $25. Advertising revenues will help to defray the cost of printing.

Since the first SPJST Member Services Directory was published in 1995, it has consistently increased in size. In 1999, the directory included more than 600 business listings, ranging from accountants and auto mechanics to musicians, beauticians and physicians.

Seasonal businesses and part-time businesses are all invited to participate in the directory.

Only those listings which are deemed "questionable" or those which promote life insurance or other products available through the SPJST, will not be printed in the directory.

La Parita-Jourdanton Lodge 161 is excited about hosting the fall meeting and family fun day on November 7, at a fabulous location, Longhorn Museum in Pleasanton. Everyone is invited to come and view the large display of animals from Africa and many other interesting exhibits. Bring cameras.

Longhorn Museum is located approximately two and one half miles west of Interstate 37 and Highway 97 (Pleasanton exit). Look for the museum and yellow caboose on the north side of Highway 97 at the edge of Pleasanton.

Saving Babies, Together In addition to receiving a plaque to mark the occasion, S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home Directors also presented Director Hrncir with a gold watch, symbolic of the time he devoted during his tenure as director.

Both S.P.J.S.T Rest Home No. 1 in Taylor and S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. 2 in Needville, Texas have developed active volunteer programs at their facilities. In addition to receiving first-rate care and accommodations, residents can participate in a variety of social and exercise activities. SPJST Choral groups, youth clubs and various other civic organizations regularly present performances for the two homes.

In April, SPJST Home Office personnel presented March of Dimes Divisional Director Wendy Sledd, third from left, with a check for $8,384.60. The proceeds were raised through Home Office participation in the VValkAmerica project, Texas Barbecue Lunch, paper sneaker sales and a 50/50 prize drawing. For these efforts, SPJST was recognized as the "Top New Team," in the Temple area and the "Second Place Team" overall for most money raised. SPJST also received the March of Dimes "Boost Your Bucks" award for its multiple fund-raising efforts. Finally, Team Captain Melanie Zavodny was cited by the charity with its "Ultimate Team Captain Award" for her organizational efforts.

Lodge 15, Buckholts Lodge 18, Elgin sponsoring Telegram member honored by for Buckholts class Wal-Mart Stores Presidend Gladys Allison convened the lodge meting and welcomed all in attendance. Our guest was District Two and Three Sales Representative Jerry Kucerea. Vice President Ricky McCall was absent due to ilness.

The minutes, treasurer's and all committees' reports were approved.

It was stated that the restrooms are being remodeled. Also a donation of $100 was made to the Buckholts Fire Department.

welcomes new members SPJST Lodge 29 held its monthly meeting on Sunday, October 10 at 4 p.m. with President Ronnie Rieger presiding. The members stood in silent respect for our deceased members Roland Sefcik, Olga Schiller, Edmond Raesz and Millie Dobias, Cathy Basil read the minutes and also the correspondence from Rosalie K. Orrick one of our 50-year members. Loretta Tate gave the treasurer's report.

Donna Pasemann read the correspondence. She told us we will have 1,520 votes at the 28th Convention on June 12 - 14, 2000 with 15 delegates and 10 alternates. Albin Machu has reserved 15 rooms for our lodge.

October 30 is the Tarok Tournament at out lodge. We need help with the meal. Also, on October 31, we have a spaghetti dinner from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. which we will also need help with.

New members in the lodge are Clement Strmiska, Bill Milburn, Sandra, Milburn, Evelyn Schwarz, Sabrina Beran, Robert Towle and Eric Zientek.

We honored our 50-year members.

The ones present to accept their pins and plaques were Frank Chovanec and Irene Hamann.

The next meeting will be held on November 14 at 4 p.m. for election of officers and delegates. The meeting adjourned.

Everyone is invited to participate in the Holiday Arts and Crafts Show and Sale to be held at Lodge 66, Waco on Saturday, October 30, 1999 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

There will be a large variety of arts and crafts for you to choose from.

Homemade cakes and pies and various other food items will be available all day.

Please make plans to come out and enjoy our Holiday Arts and Crafts Show at SPJST Linden Hall, located at seven miles north of Waco at 722 Leroy Parkway (F.M. 308) in Elm Mott, Texas.

Free Admission Admission is free. Vendor booths are available for $35 each. Wall booths are 10' by 10' and center floor booths are 12' by 8.' Lodge 80, Holland okays donation to First Baptist Church Dear Members and friends, President Harold Rohde called the meeting to order at 4 p.m. on Saturday October 2, 1999.

The membership stood for the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silence for departed members.

It was good to see President Rohde presiding after spending a week in the hospital. Also, we were glad to see Sister Gloria Sala in attendance after getting out of the hospital only a week earlier. We know nothing can keep them down for long.

Brother Glen Latham read the minutes from the previous meeting and they were approved as read. He gave all the committee reports and all were doing fine.

The Kunz family sent a thank you for the donation to the SPJST scholarship fund in memory of their mother, Isabelle. The lodge received thank yous from the Holland Track Club and Ss. Cyril and Methodius Church in Granger for the donations to their respective organizations.

Lodge Members Make Donation The membership voted to give the First Baptist Church in Holland $250 for the new window in their church.

The next meeting will be Saturday, November 6, 1999 for election of officers and delegates for the convention in 2000 in Temple. Be sure•to come vote for the leaders of the lodge and delegates to voice your opinions at the convention.

Betty Jarolik and Georgia Grossmann were reported on the sick list. We wish them a speedy recovery.

Temple

increases scholarship donation SPJST Lodge 87, Temple met on September 14, 1999. After snacking on various finger foods, we recited the Pledge of Allegiance and observed a moment of silence for our departed members. Treasurer Daryl Entrop's August report was read and approved and the minutes were read and approved as well.

Our correspondence included a letter from Brian Vanicek about the constitutional amendment HJR4 to be voted upon, Tuesday, November 2. We also received a mailing from the American Czech Cultural Society about the folk program on October 17 at the State Fair. Then we reviewed a reminder about the new awards available for our lodge in the Incentive Program. We hope to surpass our last year's achievement of the Gold Award.

I also read an announcement of the District Two Fall Meeting at Cyclone Lodge 24 on September 19. Fraternal Activities Coordinator Thelma Groppell moved that we donate $25 to District Two to defray costs associated with the fall meeting and her motion was seconded and passed unanimously.

President Alford proposed sponsoring the delivery of the Temple paper to a classroom as a lodge project. We decided to further research the project and consider it as a future fraternal activity when we had more information.

We were disappointed to find a dearth of interest among our honorees in attending our October celebration.

In addition, several of our organizational powerhouses were to, be out of town at the time of our October meting. As a result, after a lengthy discussion about the nature and intent of our

celebration, we opted to postpone it until the December holiday party. blew invitations will included a deadline for positive responses and will be sent out in early November.

We were pleased to have a large increase in our 100 Pennies Scholarship Drive donation this year and planned to have covered dish supper at our October 12 meeting.

President Alford closed with a traditional Irish blessing, but refused to give us a requested rendition of "Happy Trails!"

87, Temple plans December winter holiday celebration Lodge

SPJST Lodge 87, Temple met on October 12, 1999. After the Pledge of Allegiance and moment of silence for our departed members, President Alford introduced District Two Director Frank Klinkovsky and State Field Representative Jerry Kucera who were visiting on behalf of the Supreme Lodge. Then Treasurer Daryl Entrop's September report was approved as read as were the minutes. Treasurer Entrop reported on five new certificates written since August an all were accepted as members of Lodge 87.

Fraternal Activities Coordinator Thelma Groppell announced her own birthday and ceremoniously made her 100 Pennies Scholarship donation. We discussed the nature of "Everyday Heroes" and Bertha Capps was nominated to be our Fraternalist of the Year.

Old business was next on the agenda and we approved the new invitations to our winter holiday celebration. They will be sent out at the beginning of November. We also read the letter sent with a 50-year pin to Francis Kostorhyz, who was unable to attend our planned October celebration. We invited him to the winter celebration as well. Wednesday, November 3, 1999—VESTNIK/7 reminded us to vote on the constitutional amendments we discussed in September.

Under new business, it was suggested that we purchase more attractive trash cans for the lodge, but no motions were made to address the issue. We also discussed the "off-peak" utility rates available from TXU. Jerry Kucera then encouraged us to recommend new members and support our sales reps in the Denim Round-Up Membership Drive. He also spoke about the new Term 4 Life insurance and a mail-out planned to give all our members information about the cost of these certificates. Lastly, he arranged to assign all our "orphan members" to sales reps.

For our next meeting, we will eat lightly in preparation for the upcoming holiday feasts. Everyone will bring finger foods!

88, Houston presents October meeting minutes Lodge

President Clara Broz opened the meeting at 7:30 p.m. and Flo Orsag, Lowrina Lindemann and Margie Anders presented the colors and led the Pledge of Allegiance. Minutes were read and approved.

Correspondence was read and seven new applicants and three transfers were approved into Lodge 88. The names of nine deceased members were read: Marion Arnold, Deloris Bathe, Harley Cox, Theo Cmelka, Tommy Davis, Dorothy Lou Holden Eddie Kopinitz, Jerome Kubelka and Anthony Vindett.

Officers' Reports President Clara Broz read the agenda for Czech Day. She reported that an amendment relating to the ad valorem tax will be on the November 2 ballot. President Broz reviewed the Supreme Lodge possibility of establishing a weekend retreat for chronically ill children and reported that brochures from the Needville rest home are in the lobby. First Vice President Marie Stayton stated that flag bearers for November will be the Color Guard. She asked everyone to bring a non-perishable food item to the meeting along with extra paper sacks. She also reported in November we will honor Veterans.

Marie asked members to bring military momentos. She then read a delightful poem.

At this time President Broz read a letter of resignation from Melanie Spies who left employment early in October. Roberta Johnson has been hired until the December elections at which time she is free to run for the position.

Secretary Treasurer Melanie Spies agreed to read the Consolidated Income Statement for September.

Fraternal Activities Coordinator Larry Pflughaupt reported clothing and glasses are still being collected and tarok is played on Monday nights. Contact Lynn Pfughaupt if you want play for the State Volleyball Tournament.

Youth Leader Barbara Gonzales reported the Halloween Party is set for October 23 at 7:00 p.m. The youth

will again make ice cream and have a silent auction for Czech Day. The Christmas party is set for December 7, 1999.

Sergeant-at-Arms Johnny Broz read a poem on the shape we're in, and reported that after the meeting, the kitchen will serve sandwiches.

Committee Reports Entertainment Committee Betty Theiss reviewed the current dance schedule and invited everyone to come out on Saturday nights.

Audit Committee - Marcil Malek audited books for July, August and September and were approved.

Board of Trustees - Guenter Merkle reported clean-up day was successful, with main concentration in the kitchen. Kitchen - Guenter Merkle reported kitchen volunteers are needed for Czech Day. Please sign up to help.

Blueroom - Carol Liebscher thanked Melanie Spies for all her help for the last three years and wished her well.

She reported that reservations for the Blue Room Party will begin November 9, 1999 and must be paid

by December 10.

Social Night Chairman A.J. Stayton stated that bingo is doing very well.

He also thanked Melanie for all her help.

Mens' Club - A.J. Stayton reported Agnes Haney cleaned the chandelier in the Red Room; Laura Bell and Royal Warnesch cleaned coffeepot; and the Mens' Club spread mulch in flowerbed. He stated that papers and Fiesta receipts are needed.

Birthday Club Sisters - Flo Orsag reported in Kathy Trefell's absence that the Birthday Club went to the Steak Country Buffet recently.

Scholarship Committee - Josephine Pflughaupt reported applications are now being accepted from high school seniors who have been a member of Lodge 88 for two years with paid up dues. Applications must be in by December 31, 1999.

Rules and Regulations - Gene Barcak stated that the committee will meet and review the recommendations and present them at the November meeting and vote at the December meeting.

Choral Club - Gene Barcak thanked Melanie for all her help and reported the Choral Club will practice Wednesday, October 20, 1999 for Czech Day. Concert Orchestra - Jim Rhode reported the band will be starting their season again. Young people are encouraged to join the orchestra. He recapped all the past year's activities.

Fall Meeting Report District Five President Evelyn Mikeska reported the fall District meeting was a great success and she thanked all that helped from Lodge 88.

The next district meeting will be in the spring and will be at Lodge 172, Pasadena (This is the first Sunday in March, 2000.)

New Business President Broz reported the 2000 is Convention is coming and we need to elect three members to serve on the screening committee. We need 41 delegates and 10 substitutes and this committee will prepare ballots of eligible members to serve as delegates. The President, First Vice President, Second Vice President and Secretary will be present at the drawing for positions on ballot. The election will then be held at the annual meeting in December.

Ellen Michulka, Dorothy Pflughaupt and Helen Hegwood were elected for this committee.

Get well wishes go out to Lillie Spies, Mary Krippner, Calvin Orsag, Josephine Koppen and Jerry Ermis.

Guide Helen Hegwood reported that 99 members were present. Helen led the members in singing "Happy Birthday" to 25 celebrants.

Beverage donors were Johnny and Mary Kosut, Paul Beck and Johnny Broz. Door prize winners were Joleen Cook, Celestine Darilek, Clarice Keith, Bill Hughes'and Josephine Pflughaupt.

The next meeting will be November 8 at 7:30 p.m.

Secretary Dennis Vanek read the minutes of the last meeting which was approved by the members. A treasurer's report was also given.

Mrs. Carol Klages, a representative from Adopt-A-Pet, brought two dogs, previously adopted from Adopt-A-Pet, and gave a good presentation and question/answer session. Salesman Allan Sklar made a motion, seconded by Jackie Reid, to donate $25 to the organization. Monetary donations were also presented by the individuals.

The certificate is then paid-up.

Adult and Juvenile Whole Life. A whole life product designed for both young and mature applicants that offers affordable premiums and builds cash value.

Adult and Juvenile 20-Payment Life. A whole life product designed for both young and mature appli-

cants with premiums payable for twenty years. Issued to ages 0 through 60.

Annual Renewable Term (ART).

A one year term product that automatically renews each year with applicable premiums. Issued to ages 16 through 65. Can be converted to permanent insurance prior to age 65. Term expires at age 70.

Term 4 Life Plan. Combines elements of both term and whole life insurance. The plan offers level lifetime coverage to age 99 and premiums which start at less than half of a guaranteed whole life premium.

Term to Age 65. Offers affordable term coverage with issue ages 16 through 44. Convertible to permanent insurance prior to age 65.

Protector Plan. Designed as a reducing term insurance plan on two lives over a 20-, 25-, or 30-year period. Pays off on the death of the first insured. Premiums are calculated on combination of two insureds ages. Can be used as a mortgage cancellation plan.

Twenty-, Twenty-five- and Thirty-Year-Decreasing Terms.

Offer affordable coverage with reducing (decreasing) death benefit applicable for selected period of time.

FAC Donna Vanek and Jackie Reid were appointed to coordinate the Christmas party to be held on December 12 at the REA Building.

Other actions included nominating Shirley Sklar, Dorothy Fuzzell and Charles Garrett to serve on the Officer Nominating Committee, formed to gather names for next year's officers.

A barbecue cookoff report was given

by Chairman Allan Sklar. President Yvonne Garrett thanked District Six Director Matt Vanek for promoting and financially supporting the district barbecue cookoff. Members were encouraged to attend the cookoff, which was held October 1 and 2.

Jackie Reid made a motion for our lodge to donate $50 to the barbecue cookoff, with President Yvonne Garrett seconding the motion.

Door prizes were given and the meeting was adjourned.

142, Houston reports on October meeting Lodge

At 2 p.m. on Sunday October 10, 1999, our President Keith Kieschnick called our regular monthly meeting to order. We had 27 members and one visitor who stood for the Pledge of Allegiance. Roll call of officers showed that absent were our Flag Bearer Chris Schleider and board member Emil Kutra, Jr. Secretary Alice Jochen read the minutes from the previous meeting which stand approved as read.

All offiders reports were given and all committee reports were read.

Birthdays for October were Marilyn Spivey, Lillian Schmidt and Amy Kieschnick. Anniversary celebrants were Bill and Elaine Hintzel, 36 years, Henry and Rita Hermis, 50 years and Robert and Mary Ann Kieschnick, 30 years.

The senior door prize went to Mary Ann Kieschnick. The capsule prize for $80 went unclaimed due to the absence of Leo J. Linhart and Anita Pavlicek.

Next month's prize goes to $90.

The $5 door prize went to Sidon Tumis, Brenda Cook, Barbara Boyd and Rita Hermis. The six pack attendance door prize went to Alene Kieschnick and Shannon M. Hill.

177, Academy reports on October meeting Lodge

President Bill Hutka called our October 13 meeting to order at 7:30 p.m. with all officers present.

Libbie Bartek, chair for the Sunshine Committee, reported that to the best of her knowledge no one was on the sick list. Linda and J. C. Johnson reported that J.C.s brother; P.D. Johnson was in the ICU at Scott and White Hospital. Also, Irene Johnson was not feeling well. Bill sug-

gested that Libbie send a get well card to P.D. Johnson.

Happy Anniversary!

On the lighter side, Ray and Amalia Ybarra celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on September 22, 1999.

Congratulations are definitely in order to this wonderful couple who have spent the last 60 years together. In this day of escalating divorce rates, it's fantastic that our culture still has couples like Ray and Amalia who know what true love and dedication are. In fact, we were happy to see this wonderful couple at the lodge meeting. Ray has gone through a lot in the last few months. He looks fantastic. He made us so proud when he spoke to the members and thanked everyone who sent cards and flowers.

The minutes were approved as presented.

Correspondence Under correspondence, we received thank you cards from the family of Annie Mikeska, District Two Director Frank Klinkovsky, the Valley family and more than 69 thank you letters from the Academy Middle School.

Why? They sent the letters to thank our lodge for funding the Newspapers in Education for their school. These letters were so heartwarming. Each letter had a purpose that was to thank us and let us know how our contribution will help each student. We passed the letters around for all lodge members to read.

They were great. We also received notification from Supreme Lodge Financial Secretary Jerry Mikulas that our lodge may send five delegates to the 2000 SPJST Convention along with five substitutes.

As always, all committee chairpersons gave their monthly reports.

We welcomed five new members into our lodge: Marcelina Fuentes, Felix Fuentes, Faustina Fuentes, Louis Fuentez, and Jack Faber. These new members put us one away from the bronze award for the lodge incentive award program. We need only one more new member to get to this next stepping stone. Let's all pull together and at least get that one new member before next month.

Youth Club Report Youth Leader Janet Lyon read the minutes of the youth club meeting held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, October 10th.

President Sara Wagner called the meeting to order and Courtney Wagner led members in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Present at the meeting were seven members and two adults. The treasurer reported an ending bank balance of $689.26. Youth earned $209.10 including parade reimbursement for the Bartlett Friendship Fest and also received Second Place in youth club division of parade. Our youth club has submitted an application to participate in the Lacks Trim-a-Tree contest and should know by October 18th if we're accepted. Crafts will be made after the November meeting and will later be delivered on Thanksgiving Day to the Pediatrics Unit at Scott and White Hospital. All youth were encouraged to form at least two youth teams and participate in the upcoming Volleyball Tournament on November 13th.

Meeting adjourned at 2:26 p.m. Next meeting will be November 14th.

The lodge trustees held their meeting at 7 p.m. prior to the members meeting. Several items were discussed.

All trustees were excited to see our new sign installed and thanked J.C. Johnson for getting that done. In fact, J.C. did such a wonderful, on that project that he volunteered along with Otis

Wednesday, November 3, 1999—VESTNIKJ9 to get prices on new doors for the lodge. As most of you know, we really need to start renovating our lodge.

Trustees decided that after its cold (if it ever does and some of our weeds die and freeze) that we have a yard clean up day. We plan to shred weeds and bushes and improve the appearance of the lot adjoining our lodge building.

FAC Barbara Rosenkranz reminded everyone Make A Difference Day on October 23rd. She reported that so far we have met 11 out of 15 categories but after restating some our activities for the year thus far, we may have met more. She reminded everyone of the 100 Pennies Scholarship Drive. Also, she will not run for FAC next year.

Under old business, Bill reported that the doors cannot be switched out.

We will have to replace them and J.C. Johnson will check on prices for us and report at next month's meeting. Helen Bland, Jackie Beck and Barbara Rosenkranz served on the fraternalist of the year committee and Helen Bland reported that their committee nominated Otis Beck as the nominee.

District Two President Kathy Fritz thanked all members for the $100 donation made to defray expenses of the district fall meeting. She also thanked all members that attended the meeting and supported both our lodge and district.

Under new business, Bill Hutka appointed Theresa Baca and Libbie Bartek to the nominating committee.

Libbie declined; therefore, Bill then appointed Ray Ybarra. Otis Beck appointed Helen Bland.

Members were asked to think about planning a Christmas party and be prepared to present ideas at next month's meeting.

In Memoriam Resolution of Sympathy We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge 88, Houston, Texas, and on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our sincere and heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed member, HARLEY PAUL COX, who passed away on September 24, 1999 at the age of 83. He was with Kraft Foods for 27 years and was an Account Supervisor. As Entertainment Chairman for the SPJST Lodge 88 for 30 years, he was responsible of having big bands play at the Chandelier Ballroom. He was a member of Oaks Presbyterian Church and the SPJST. Mr. Cox is survived by his wife of 50 years, Viola Cox; daughter, Bonnie Cox Hill and husband Kevan; two sons, Donald and wife, Gina and Larry Don; seven grandchildren, Katherine, Cayla, Cody, Conner, Courtney, Gina, Julie; and two great-grandchildren.

Services were at 10 a.m. September 27 in the Pat Foley Chapel, with the Reverend John F. Hirling of Oaks Presbyterian Church officiating.

Interment followed at Memorial Oaks Cemetery. Pallbearers were Ron Braikovich, Leland Hensley, Charles Hodek, Bennie Kocich, Philip Mohan and Burl Richardson.

Resolution Committee Laura Warnash Gladys Havemann Mary Roznovsky —SPJST-

In Memory of Joseph Hadash Funeral services for Joseph Jerry "Joe" Hadash were held at 2 p.m. on September 25, 1999 at First Lutheran Church in El Campo with Reverend Laird Engle officiating. He was laid to rest at Garden of Memories Cemetery.

Mr. Hadash died Wednesday, September 22, 1999 at his home after a long illness. He was born in Colorado County near Weimar on February 13, 1921 to Peter and Mary Hadash. He married Elenora Roznovak on March 7, 1942 and was inducted into the U. S. Army in November, 1942, spending three years as a rifleman in the infantry in France and Germany with the 90th Division. He was wounded and taken as a Prisoner of War on December 13, 1944; he was liberated from Bad Orb, Germany, on April 13, 1945 and was discharged on November 13, 1945. As a result of his military service, Joe received several commendations: two Bronze Stars, the Purple Heart, POW Medal, Combat Infantry Badge and four Bronze Campaign Stars.

After his discharge from the Army, Mr. Hadash and his wife, relocated to El Campo, where he worked as a mechanic and later as a farm machinery salesman for Wendel's Hardware and Shult Implements. He retired in 1982 and continued to enjoy gardening, fishing and growing and gathering satsumas and pecans. A longtime member of SPJST Lodge 30, Taiton, Mr. Hadash served as financial secretary and salesman for sixteen years and also as treasurer for R.V.O.S. Fraternal. Insurance Company. He was also a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and Disabled

American Veterans.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Elenora; a daughter and son inlaw, JoAnn and Eddie Schneider of Winchester; one granddaughter and her husband, Robin and David Wiggins of Pasadena; and one grandson, Kevin Schneider of Houston.

Memory of Mildred Vecera in

Mildred Vecera is now in God's loving hands. She passed away October 7, 1999 in the early morning.

Visitation was from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., Friday, October 8 at St. Michael's Church in Needville with a rosary being recited at 7 p.m.

Funeral services were at 10 a.m.

Saturday, October 9 at St. Michael's Church in Needville. The Monsignor Reginald Nesvadba officiated the services.

Pallbearers were Kelly Kaluza, James Sodolak, Charles Fojtik, Neil Smolik, Frank Vecera and Russell Tautenhahn.

Mildred was a wonderful wife, loving mother and doting grandma to her nine grandchildren. If you ever visited with Mildred, you would never leave emptyhanded. She loved to cook for everyone and took great joy in being involved with her grandchildren and the activities they took part in. She had a way of making you feel better just by the look in her eyes or the smile on her face. She was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church, K.J.Z.T., a charter member of the St. Isidor Catholic Daughters, Court 2344 and the Altar Society.

She was born December 18, 1931 at home in Fairchilds. She was preceded in death by her husband, Constant and her parents, Anne and Emil Sodolak; and her father in-law and mother in-law, Frank and Frances Vecera.

She is survived by her children, Anthony Vecera of Richmond, Annette Metke and her husband, Cary of Sugar Land, Connie Neelon and her husband, Tim of Needville, Glenn Vecera and his wife, Paula of Fairchilds and Gayle Bludau and her husband, Mark of Fairchilds; nine grandchildren, Matt Stevens, Kristen Metke, Bobby Neelon, Erik Metke, Ernie Neelon, Megan Bludau, Tyler Bludau, Conner Vecera and Carson Vecera.

She is also survived by her sisters, Mary Lee Kaluza and her husband, E.J. of Fairchilds, Martha Mitchell and her husband. Darrell of Fairchilds and Lorene Velek and her husband, Jerry of Houston; a brother, Leonard Sodolak and his wife, Anna Mae of Round Top; sisters in-law, Sylvia Priesler (Leonard Priesler), LaVerne Smolik, Bernadette Champiomont (Roy); and a brother inlaw, Frank Vecera (May Belle).

Her warm smile and loving touch will be missed by all who loved her on earth.

Now she is dancing with the angels and heaven is a joyous place because of her presence.

Resolution of Sympathy We, the members of the Resolution Committee, on behalf of the membership of Lodge Karel Jonas, No. 28 of East Bernard, Texas, wish to express our deepest and sincerest sympathy to the family of our departed sister, EMILIE H. DUJKA. Funeral services for Emilie H. Dujka, 87 of Wallis were held on Monday, August 16 at 11 a.m. from the Knesek and Sons Funeral Home in Wallis with Reverend Henry Beseda officiating.

Interment was at Krasna Cemetery in Wallis.

Mrs. Dujka died Friday, August 13, 1999 in Wharton.

She was born Emilie Henrietta Schovajsa on October 13, 1911 in the Michna School community near Shiner to parents Frank and Rosalie (Ticha y sky) Schovajsa, natives of Czechoslovakia and Hackberry, Lavaca County, respectively.

She was raised on a farm and attended school at the Michna School and then Shiner High School, where she graduated valedictorian of her class in 1930. She attended Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos on a scholarship and received a temporary teaching certificate.

She taught six years in the Michna School and later in Fort Bend County, Needville, Guy and Beasley, totaling 13 years of teaching Every summer she attended summer school at the University of Texas in Austin and in August 1939, she received a Bachelor of Arts degree.

She was an active member of the Brethren Church in Shiner and had been a member of the Rosenberg Brethren Church since she arrived in Fort Bend County. She was also a member of Lodge 28, East Bernard.

On August 22, 1945, she married Adolph Dujka. They settled on a farm in the Orchard-Tavener community, where they lived all their married life.

Adolf Dujka died on February 16, 1992 after 46 years of marriage.

Survivors include: daughter and son in-law, Donna and Paul Coppinger of Plano; son, Jay Paul Dujka of Richmond; son and daughter in-law, David and Liz Dujka of Bay City; granddaughter, Kelli Miller and husband, Mike of Bay City; grandsons, Paul Coppinger, Jr. and Douglas A. Coppinger of Plano; great-grandchildren, Madison Dujka and Morgan Miller of Bay City; sister, Rosie Wentrcek of Rogers; sister in-law, Emma Schovajsa of Shiner; and numerous nieces, nephews and other family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her

parents, Frank and Rosalie Schovajsa; brothers, infants Charles and Jerry Schovajsa; sisters, Louise Hruska, Vlasta Schovajsa and Annie Schovajsa; and a brother, Frank L. Schovajsa.

Mrs. Mach was born October 3, 1920 in Elk. She was a homemaker, a member of SPJST Lodge 35 in Elk, St. Joseph Catholic Church of Elk and St. Ann's Altar Society. She was also a past secretary and treasurer for SPJST Pavelka Cemetery Association and past member of R.V.O.S. Mrs. Mach was preceded in death by her husband, John Mach on January 5, 1997.

Survivors include her daughters, JoAnn and husband, Ernest Nors of West, Wanda Sebik and her husband, Jack Levy of Waco; Bernice and husband, Eugene Schiller of College Station; son, John Ed Mach and his wife, Stephanie of Waco; a sister, Mrs. Otis (Emma) Ceska of Waco; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Expression of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge 47, Seaton, Texas, on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our deepest and most sincere sympathy to the family and friends of our departed lodge brother, JOHN JOE HRUSKA. Services for John Joe Hruska were Monday, September 27, 1999 at 10 a.m. at Seaton Brethren Church with the Reverend Al Newby officiating.

Burial was in Seaton Cemetery.

Mr. Hruska died on Friday, September 24, in a local hospital.

He was born in Red Ranger to Stephen and Anna Lesikar Hruska. He married Vlasta Mikeska on January 8, 1944, in Temple. He was a retired farmer and carpenter. He was a member of Seaton Lodge 47 in Seaton. He volunteered for military service during during World War II, serving in the Air Force, 1941-1945. He was a member of the Air Force Band and received the American Defense Medal, American Theater Medal and the Victory Medal.

Survivors are his wife, Vlasta Hruska of Temple; one daughter, Janette Hruska Couch of San Antonio; one sister, Vlasta Divis of Crane; and one grandson.

Harper-Talasek Funeral Home in Temple was in charge of arrangements.

Memorials can be made to Seaton Brethren Church or Vista Care Family Hospice.

May our departed brother rest in peace. God bless the family.

of Thomas Scanio Thomas J. Scanio, 87, M.D., passed away October 16, 1999 in Austin. Vigil services were held at 7:30 p.m. Monday, October 18 at Cook-Walden Chapel of the Hills Funeral Home. Funeral services were at 10 a.m. Tuesday, October 19, 1999 at St. Thomas More Catholic Church.

Interment followed at Austin Memorial Park.

Dr. Scanio was born in Waco on September 24, 1912 to Frank and Jennie Scanio. He grew up in Temple and then graduated from Baylor University. He then attended and graduated from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. He served his internship at Providence Hospital in Waco. He practiced for a short time in Rosebud and then in West for 18 years. During his tenure in West, he volunteered to serve in the Army Air Corps during World War II. Dr. Scanio did a residency in obstetrics and gynecology at St. Joseph's Hospital in Houston. He returned to Waco and practiced for 32 years. Dr. Scanio delivered more than 12,000 children in his lifetime. He spent his last years in Austin in retirement..

Dr. Scanio was involved in many organizations which included St. Thomas More Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre Jerusalem, Serra Club, KJT, VFW SPJST Lodge 36, West, American Medical Association, Texas Medical Association and the Texas Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

Expression of Sympathy We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of Lodge Karel Havlicek No. 4, Hallettsville, Texas, on behalf of our entire membership wish to express our most sincere and deepest sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge sister, WILLIEMENA APPELT KOLOS, who passed away on Sunday, August 15, 1999 in the Lavaca Medical Center at the age of 77 years. She was born January 22, 1922 in Sublime to John A. and Ida Einkdauf Siecko. She was the 1998 Kolache Queen of the Hallettsville Kolache Fest. On January 30, 1972, she married Louis Julius Kolos of Hallettsville.

Survivors included her stepmother, Rosie Siecko of Yoakum; five daughters, Dorothey Benoit and Doris Kalmus, both of Sugar Land, Betty Appelt of Bastrop and Helen Spies and Linda Haas, both of Hallettsville; six stepdaughters, Louise Kolos, JoAnn Byrn and Jean Mitchell, all of Hallettsville, Katherine Plant of Bastrop, Elizabeth Scribrer of Tupelo, Mississippi and Linda Matlage of Austin; a son, Frankie Appelt, Jr. of Hallettsville and two stepsons, Victor Kolos and Louis Kolos, Jr. both of Hallettsville; three sisters, Josephine Lemke of Sugar Land, Oretha Pennock of San Antonio and Rose Fitch of Edna; two brothers, Clarence Siecko of Sugar Land and Fred Siecko of Yoakum; 10 grandchildren; 19 stepgrandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and five step-great-grandchildren; and her true and faithful neighbors, The Ray Renken family.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Louis Julius Kolos on February 6, 1996 and two brothers, Johnnie August Siecko and Halton Arthur Siecko.

Services were conducted at 10 a.m.

The District Two Youth Club will be sponsoring a lock-in after the SPJST State Volleyball Tournament on Saturday, November 13 at Lodge 24, Cyclone, Flag Hall. The lock-in will begin at 7 p.m. on Saturday, November 13 and end at 7 a.m. on Sunday, November 14.

All members are invited and encouraged to attend. We have many exciting things planned for this event.

You won't want to miss it. All members can bring a friend or two to enjoy the evening. Snacks and drinks will be provided. Door prizes will be awarded.

We will be in need of chaperones.

youth club collects items for donation Lodge 4 meeting was held October 24, 1999. It was called to order by Nick Vahalik. Roll call was taken by Elizabeth Vahalik. There were four out of eight members present—Josh Siptak, Nick Vahalik, Elizabeth Vahalik and Bryan Richardson.

The minutes were read by Bryan Richardson and seconded by Elizabeth Vahalik.

It was agreed for each family to bring 10 canned goods to contribute to a needy family. Also, 10 Yoplait Yogurt lids per family (with the pink lids for cancer patients.)

The next youth club meeting will be held the second Sunday in November—the 14th and we will meet at Werner's Restaurant in Shiner.

Church in Hallettsville. The Reverend Terry Horton officiated. Burial followed in the Greiger Cemetery in Sublime.

youth members receive treats from honorary grandparents Dear Readers, The Snook Youth Club had their monthly meeting on October 6 at 6:30 p.m. For our craft, we made ghosts.

They were really scary!

After that, we welcomed new members Josef Orsak and Cullen Hairrel.

We discussed old and new business.

Our charities for the month of November are 1) bring a bag of fruit to make fruit bags, 2)bring old coats/clothing for school nurse 3) make/send cards for people in community and 4) clean and water flower bed.

Guest Speaker Lyndon Jakubik Our speaker was Mr. Lyndon Jakubik who spoke to us about banking. Thank you, Mr. Jakubik. After the meeting was over, our honorary grandparents brought us cookies and punch. That was very delicious.

youth wins ornament contest Dear Readers, On Sunday, October 10, 1999 several members of our youth club attended the District One Fall Fun Day and Christmas ornament contest. We played bingo and even though I did not win a game, I still had fun.

Our members did well in the contest. I was honored to receive first place in my age group. I am looking forward to having my ornament hang on the Home Office tree this season.

Dear Readers, The Snook SPJST Youth Club had their monthly meeting on October 6.

It was well attended and we had two new members, Josef Orsak and Cullen Hairrel.

Then we had Mr. Lyndon Jakubik talk to us about banking. We also made ghosts and had cookies and punch that our honorary grandparents brought. Thanks Mr. and Mrs. Jakubik. They were delicious.

On October 23, we participated in make a Difference Day by having the Snook Library opened, had two story times and crafts and served cookies.

Mrs. Ginger Hejl was there to help everyone with computer skills. Thanks a lot, Mrs. Greger.

Our next meeting is on Wednesday, November 3 at 6:30 p.m. at the hall.

Dear Uestnik Readers, On October 3, 1999, the Taiton Lodge 30 Youth Club participated in the 15th annual Taiton Community Center Fall Festival. All the youth club members, leaders and parents were involved in many areas.

We had our annual fund raiser, the cake and animal walk. Some of us also helped out during the afternoon with other game areas set up inside and outside the hall.

Then at noon, we performed our various acts for everyone. The Junior and Senior Beseda dance groups performed first. Then some youth members did their individual talent acts.

The Junior Group talent performed next with their "Born to Boogie" jitterbug dance. To conclude the program, the Senior Group performed their dance routine to "Rock Around the Clock."

We all had a very busy and enjoyable day!

First Christian Church fellowship hall in El Campo. Sixty members were present. President Marie Matcek opened the meeting and the members recited the Pledge of Allegiance.

Father Benton Thurmond of Inez gave the prayer. The members sang the Czech national anthem accompanied

by Ethel Meek on the piano.

Secretary Geraldine Socha gave the secretary's report and the treasurer's report. For correspondence, she read several letters of appreciation from Wharton County High School graduates who graduated this past spring.

They were recipients of scholarships from the Wharton County Chapter.

President Matcek stated that 27 members attended the July state meeting in Hallettsville.

Merril Adamcik, Chairman of the chapter's fund raiser in July, reported that it was a huge success. It was a take out meal of barbecue chicken. He thanked the group who participated and helped with the project. This money will be used to give future scholarships next year to graduating seniors in Wharton County.

Dear Readers Our role in the District Six Barbecue cookoff was discussed. We were to help with the barbecue platesto-go and the snack bar. Members understood that points will be earned for any help we provided.

Mrs. Carol Klages, a representative from Adopt-A-Pet, brought two dogs, previously adopted from Adopt-APet, and gave a good presentation and It was announced that the next meeting will be on Tuesday, December 7 at the First Christian Church fellowship hall. There will be a dinner and music for entertainment.

WCCHS Hosts State Meeting President Matcek announced that the spring state Czech Heritage meeting will be held on Saturday, March 11, year 2000 at the fellowship hall of St. Andrews Church in Hillje. The Wharton County chapter is host for the occasion. There will be a Wharton County chapter executive committee meeting on Wednesday, November 17 at 7 p.m. in the Gold Room of the Commercial State Bank in El Campo.

The members voted to send a donation to the Institute of Texan Cultures Center in San Antonio, Texas.

Richard Chomout, Program Chairman, introduced Don Naiser, General Manager of WCEC, who gave a report on the recent legislation designed to restructure the electric utility industry in Texas.

Utility Costs Discussed Naiser reported that the 1999 legislature had passed a law that will make the purchase of electric energy a competitive decision for customers of investor-owned utilities. This will be

question/answer session.

For our craft project, youth club members decorated miniature pumpkins which was enjoyed by all. Door prizes were given and the meeting was adjourned.

The legislature, however, recognized that electric cooperatives are different since they are locally owned and controlled. The legislation gives co-ops the choice as a whole as to "if and when" they will allow retail competition.

Naiser said that although the law is in effect, the day-to-day rules as to how the system will operate are being written by the Energy Reliability Council of Texas and the Texas Public Commission. Some of the rules being suggested and considered are very burdensome and may cause the cost of electric service to increase for small commercial and residential users.

WCEC and most co-ops are reserving their decisions whether to choose retail competition until the rules are clear.

"We have the option to go either way which gives us a lot of flexibility.

We plan to thoroughly understand the rules before we choose."

Naiser also discussed the other services which members and, in some cases, non-members can choose at the co-op. The lightning and surge protection and solar water pumping services resulted in a lot of interest and several questions from the audience.

Naiser also made comments on his family's genealogy research. So for, the family has been researched back to eight generations. Many of the names are familiar ones in this area.

President Matcek read an article and announced that Governor Bush designated the whole month of October as Texas Czech Heritage Month.

The meeting was dismissed and members enjoyed refreshments.

After the meeting, we were entertained with music provided by Pauline Mazur, Ed Brosh, LeRoy Dorotik and Joe Havlak on accordions and Delmer Batla on guitar. Members and guests enjoyed polka dances, sing-alongs and a delicious meal.

Upcoming Chapter Meetings The next meeting of the Concho Valley C.H.S. will be held on Sunday, November 21. We will share our traditional meal of turkey and ham and all the fixings. Lunch will be served at I p.m. followed by the business meeting at 2:30 p.m. The chapter will provide the turkey and ham which will be prepared by Pauline Mazur and Elizabeth Walther and Chapter members will provide the side dishes. During the meeting, members will elect new officers and directors, set meeting dates for the year 2000, discuss hall rental fees and collect annual membership dues.

The Concho Valley Czech Heritage Society of Texas for Runnels, Concho and Tom Green Counties held its third quarterly meeting of 1999 on Sunday, August 15 at SPJST Lodge 49 in Rowena, Texas. President Louis Kokes opened the meeting for the 31 members and five guests in attendance.

Our special guests were Mr. and Mrs. Gerhard Gernoth of Germany who were accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. David Blazek. The Gernoths are the parents of Mrs. Blazek and are spending their summer vacation visiting sites in Texas while staying with their daughter and family in San Angelo.

Our guest speaker was our own Vice.

President Pauline Mazur who had recently returned from her first trip to the Czech Republic. Pauline enjoyed

The Texas District of the National Alliance of Czech Catholics is joining the National Alliance of Czech Catholics in sponsroing a pilgrimage for the Holy Year celebration. The dates of the pilgirmage are March 25 through April 13, 2000.

The tour will include visits to notable pilgrimage sites in Austria, the Czech Republic, Germany and Italy.

During the visit to Rome, .the pilgrims from the United States will join the people and Bishops of the Czech Republic in Christina solidarity for three dyas of specila events.

Austin Community College Conversational Czech 11 will be offered November 1 through December 3, 1999 at Austin Community College, 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. This is a class for students who have completed a basic Czech language class and have some knowledge of the Czech language and want to improve their reading, speaking and listening skills. The course will focus on developing complex expressions. (21 hours) Textbooks required.
