"Cigar box community" sits quietly on FM437 by Clay Coppedge The name of the community, Red Ranger, begs the imagination to figure out an origin. Why would someone name a com munity Red Ranger? And what does it mean? The younger set might think Red Ranger is named for one of the Power Rangers, but older imaginations might conjure up equally fanciful origins for the little community between Rogers and Zabcikville on FM 437. The truth, as is often the case, is mor practical than imaginative. Louise Zavodny, the community's unofficial historian and coproprietor of the Red Ranger Store, will tell you, if asked, that it's named after a cigar.
"The cigar box has horses chasing a red fox," explains Louise, a longtime SPJST member and sales representa tive for Lodge 24, Cyclone. "The fox is a ranger, you see, because it's on the range. It's being chased by men on horseback." Manufactured by Swisher Brothers, the cigar is long gone. But the Red Ranger Store still operates as it has been since 1906. The store outlasted a fot more than the three-for-a-nickel cigar that inspired its name, and Mrs. Zavodny outlasted all of the previous seven owners, which included her father, R.J. Marek. Mr. Marek owned the store from 1924 to 1942. She and her first husband, the late (Continued on page 4.)
