Pictured above are SPJST Home Office personnel, family members and Temple-area lodge members who participated in the recent WalkAmerica project to raise money for the March of Dimes. Overall, SPJST raised $8,384.60 for the charity with proceeds collected from the walk, Texas Barbecue Lunch, paper sneaker sales and a 50/50 prize drawing. For these efforts, SPJST was recognized as the "Top New Team," in the Temple area and the "Second Place Team" overall for most money raised. SPJST also received the March of Dimes "Boost Your Bucks" award for its multiple fund-raising efforts. Finally, Team Captain Melanie Zavodny was cited by the charity with its "Ultimate Team Captain Award" for her organizational efforts. SPJST invites young members to participate in Flag Day essay contest The flag stands for all that we hold dear —Freedom, Democracy, Government of the People, by the People, and for the People.

—Henry Cabot Lodge, 1915 President Woodrow Wilson, in 1914, proclaimed June 14 as Flag Day.

While Flag Day was a popular celebration in scores of communities after Wilson's proclamation, it didn't receive its Congressional designation until 1949. In 1999, the SPJST joins its sister fraternal benefit societies across the country in paying tribute to our national symbol of liberty and freedom.

In conjunction with this observance, the SPJST is sponsoring a Flag Day Essay Contest. Topics for 1999 are as follows:

Flag Day Essay Contest winner will receive $100 and have his or her winning essay published in the Vestnik and read at the SPJST Home Office flag raising ceremony on Monday, June 14, 1999.

Senate Committee Considers Tax Bills Last Week in Austin The Texas Senate Finance Committee considered two bills (SJR 40 and SB 1515) on Thursday, April 23, relating to the intrafraternal effort to seek ad valorem (property tax) exemptions for certain fraternal lodge properties. Both bills were presented

by District Five Senator Steve Ogden of Bryan.

In his opening statement, Senator Ogden outlined the basis for the legislation, "In many communities, lodges and lodge halls are the social hub of the community," he said, "Instead of (concentrating their efforts) performing charitable purpos es, lodges are having to spend an inordinate amount of time raising money to pay their ad valorem taxes."

Following Senator Ogden's presentation, the Finance Committee received testimony from former Texas Supreme Court Justice and Texas Mason Jack Hightower and SPJST President Howard Leshikar. Oscar

Koehner and Lillie Mae Fields, representing the Sons of Hermann and Brian Vanicek, representing the SPJST were also in attendance and registered positions in favor of the legislation.

In that a majority of Finance Committee members were not present for the hearing, no formal action action was taken. As such, the legislation is "pending in committee." It may receive further consideration by the Finance Committee at a later date, to be announced.

Senate Finance Committee members who will be considering the ad valorem bills include Bill Ratliff of Mt. Pleasant, Chair; Carlos Truan of Corpus Christi, Vice Chair; Mario Gallegos, Jr. of Galena Park; Jon Lindsay of Houston; Royce West of Dallas; Steve Ogden of Bryan; Mike Moncrief of Fort Worth; Troy Fraser of Horseshoe Bay; Gonzalo Barrientos of Austin; Robert Duncan of Lubbock and John Carona of Dallas.

Mother's Day Barbecue May 9 SPJST Lodge 24, Cyclone cordially invites you to enjoy the Seventh Annual Mother's Day Barbecue on Sunday, May 9 at Flag Hall in Cyclone. Barbecue chicken and all the trimmings will be served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Plates are $6 each and available for dine in or take out. Flag Hall is located 10 miles east of Temple, past Zabcikville, off Highway 53, in Cyclone.

32, Victoria participates in recycling drive Lodge

Lodge 32, Victoria held its regular meeting on Wednesday April 14, 1999 at Victoria Electric Co-op with all officers present and minutes of th previous meeting were read and approved. The treasurer gave her report. New members are Travis Kocian, Michael Hill, Michael and Bradley Pozzi.

We will participate in the annual Hazardous Material Recycling Drive Saturday, April 17.

We are planning on having our annual member social on June 10.

66, Waco readies for May 22 garage sale Lodge

President George Pauling called the meeting to order on April 18 at 2:30 p.m. at Lodge 66, Elm Mott, Texas.

The youth presented the flag and led the Pledge of Allegiance and motto.

All officers were present with the exception of Vice President Mary Alice Langlotz. There were 30 members present and one visitor, Wendy Sledd with the March of Dimes who gave a video presentation about WalkAmerica. We were glad to have you with us, Wendy.

Members stood for a moment of silent prayer for two of our deceased members, Brothers Alvin Macik and William Bounds. May they rest in peace. Members also stood for a moment of silent prayers for Brother Eugene Gerlich who suffered a stroke

Secretary Dana McAdams read the minutes of the March 21 meeting and they were approved as read.

President Pauling read a letter of schedules for the sales representatives meetings of which they must attend two. One of the meetings our sales representatives attended was at Lodge 6, Cottonwood. He also showed a flyer about how to win a trip along with application blanks to sell insurance.

Chairman of the Board, Brother Johnny Gaidusek had Secretary of the Board of Directors Sister Bonnie Pruitt read the minutes of the April 7 meeting.

Co-Chairman of the Entertainment Committee, Sister Dorothy Veselka gave the report due to the absence of Chairman Dorothy Gerlich who was in the hospital with her husband, Eugene. She reported that today we are having casseroles, salad and ice cream after the Easter egg hunt. At our May meeting, our Mother's Day celebration, we will serve barbecue with all

the trimmings. Members are asked to bring desserts. For the garage sale on May 22, we will serve sandwiches of barbecue, sausage, hot dogs with chips and pickles.

Due to the absence of Fraternal Activities Coordinator reporter Sister Mary Alice Langlotz, President Pauling reported that only eight members were present on April 12 game night. The next game night is May 10.

President Pauling also reminded everyone that the District Three meeting is Sunday, April 25 in Fort Worth.

Chairman of the Cheer and Condolence Committee, Sister Emma Ceska gave her report. She wished Brother Eugene Gerlich a speedy recovery and she will be sending him a get well card. Also, Sister Libbie Parma has not been feeling well. Sister Libbie has been visiting by phone to Sister Minnie Narovec who is in a wheel chair and also visiting with Sister Albina Kozlovsky who lives in McGregor. Sister Emma received a thank you card from Rosemary Adair and Helen Woodbury, sisters of Sister Lillian Ann Parma, who passed away recently. She sent sympathy cards to Mrs. Aline Wright on the death of her

Sister Emma also reported that Sister Sue Pauling, wife of President George Pauling, had double pneumonia, but is doing better. We hope all the sick get well real soon.

Sistei Darlene Engelke reported that she and Sister Gladys Yates attended the Insurance Sales Representative dinner at Ennis and they enjoyed it very much.

Chairman of the Grievance Committee, Brother Bennie Engelke reported no grievances.

Youth Ready for May 22 Garage Sale Youth Leader, Sister Diana Engelke gave the youth report. There were 17 youth, six adults and two visitors, Justin and Sara Wallace present at today's meeting. The youth donated Easter candy to the Moody Nursing Home. Today, the youth are having an Easter egg hunt and scavenger hunt.

The youth are also getting ready for the garage sale on May 22. She also reminded the youth about the District Three \oath Achievement Day which will be held in Cottonwood in June.

The birthday cakes were brought by Tanner and Trenton Guidroz, the game

by Kylie Callaway. Youth first place door prize winner was Amanda Neslony, second place Alicia Neslony.

Sister Diana also reported that the youth will be doing the Wall(America at Indian Springs Park on May 15 for the March of Dimes.

VViih Bookkeeper Brother Eugene Gerlich being in the hospital, there was no bookkeeper's report today.

Bake Sale Items Needed Special Projects Manager Brother Michael Galler has been running ads in the newspapers on the garage sate scheduled for May 22. He has the tickets read y to be sold on the king or queen quilts which is being donated by Brother Eugene and Sister Dorothy Gerlich. The lodge will also have a booth. Vendors will be able to start setting up on Friday, May 21 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Members are asked to bring garage sale items to Linden Hall to our May 16 meeting as some of the members will need to start pricing some of the items. Pastries are also needed for the Bake Sale that Sister Libbie Parma is heading up. Let Sister Libbie know what you will bring.

He thanked Brother Milan Dujka for all the work he is dong on rentals, etc. He thanked the members who came out early to put tables and chairs back to their original places after being moved for a wedding the night before.

President Pauling reported that several members attended the State Horseshoe Tournament. Brothers Weldon and Michael Galler won first place and Brother Jodie and Sister Dana McAdams won third place.

Congratulations to all who won and who participated.

President Pauling also reported that he spoke to Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar on the ad valorem tax. Brother Leshikar told him that there are about five people at the state capitol working on this matter.

Charles Trickett was our only April birthday celebrant.

Adult prize winner was Gladys Yates, the 50-50 winner was George Puling and he donated his winnings back to the Trust Fund.

The next Board of Directors Meeting is scheduled for May 5 at 7 p.m. Also the Entertainment Committee will meet on May 5 at 7 p.m. The next lodge meeting is scheduled for May 16 at 2:30 p.m.

Lodge 92 wants to thank the dance committee for the great dance April 18.

It was a spring festival with two bands—The Alpine Village Band from Dallas and Gary Lee from Fort Worth.

The bands played continuously so people really got lots of dancing. There were free pretzels on all the tables.

The kitchen had good sandwiches and lots of kolaches so everyone had a great time. A member from South Carolina, Lillian Cooper, was here to visit her relatives.

The next dances include a country and western dance on May 2 with musci by Gary Lee from 3 to 7 p.m., and on May 16 a polka and waltz dance sponsored by KJT with music by the Jodie Mikula Band from Ennis, Texas. Thanks to everyone that came to our dances and other activities. We always try to make you feel at home.

P.S. It's Magic A country boy and his father were visiting a shopping mall in a big city for the first time They were amazed at everything they saw, especially two shiny silver walls that mysteriously moved apart and back together again.

"What's that?" asked the son. Never having seen an elevator before, his father replied, "Son I don't have the foggiest notion." The father and son were watching wide-eyed when an elderly woman with a cane, slowly hobbled up to the shiny walls, pressed a button and the wall slid open. He walked into a small room and the walls closed behind her. The father and son continued to watch as small circle with numbers inside them lit up again - only in reverse order. The walls opened and a gorgeous young woman stepped out.

Lodge 139, Danbury offering $500 scholarship to lodge graduate

Dear Members and Friends, It is hard to think about writing when a very good young man has passed away. It was sad news April 15th when I heard that one of our members Anthony (Tony) Alholm had died April 14th at his home in Glen Ellyn, Illinois. Tony was only 49 years of age. He was a lawyer. He attended school in Fort Worth and graduated from Nolan Catholic School in 1966.

He went to Nortre Dame for undergraduate studies and graduated in 1973 from law school. Tony was a lifetime member of Lodge 92. The funeral was held in Glen Ellyn at the Petronille

Lodge 139 is again offering a $500 scholarship to a Lodge 139 high school graduate. The eligibility rules are the same as in the past: The student must have been a member since before the end of his/her fresheman year, excluding a juvenile policy; scholastically, the student must be in the top 15 percent of his/her class; the applicant must include a letter from the school counselor stating the grade point average and his/her standing in the class. The application and letter should be mailed to Lorenda Baldwin, 219 CR 47, Angleton, Texas, 77515 and must be received before May 1.

During the Apirl 21 meeting at EJ's Restaurant, regular business was conducted. and David Baldwin was wished a happy birthday. The meal and fellowship were enjoyed by all.

Lodge 142, Houston reports on April meeting President Keith Kieschnick called our meeting to order at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 4, 1999. We had 26 members and one guest who stood for the Pledge of Allegiance. All remained standing for a moment of silence in memory of our departed members, Lea Voytek ad Betty Roznosky. May their souls rest in peace.

Roll call of officers showed all were present,with the exception of our guide, Frank Tumis; Brother Sidon Tumis served as our guide for this meeting.

The minutes from the previous meeting were read and approved.

All officers reports and committee reports were given. Sick Committee reported. James Templain and Alice Jochen were in the hospital.

Come One, Come All to ne Fish Fry! Everyone was reminded of our upcoming Fish Fry on Saturday, May 1st. Come one and come all! Serving will be from 4 Rm. to 7 p.m. Music, prize winning drawing and door prizes will add excitement to this fun day.

The oldest member prize went to Bernice Walther. The capsule prize for $20 went unclaimed due to the absence of Craig Behrens and Linda K. Triska.

Next month, the prize goes to $30 come out and win!

Four $5 door prizes went to Nancy Cook, Barbara Boyd, Chris Schleider and Elmo Walther. Four six pack prizes were awarded to Lillian Schmidt, Keith Kieschnick, Robert Kieschnick and Martin Kieschnick.

Thanks to Henry and Rita Hermis for donations of door prizes; every mezaber present was a winner for an additional door prize as their name was drawn from the register book.

The meeting adjourned at 2:40 p.m.

202, Jourdanton hosts membership rally at April meeting Lodge

Lodge 202 held their regular monthly meeting on April 11, 199 at 2:30 p.m.

The meeting was called to order by President Bill Rickrim. After the Pledge of Allegiance, the regular meeting was deferred to our next meeting date on May 2, 1999.

Membership Rally The program was then turned over to the Home Office representatives Gene McBride, Melanie Zavodny and Barbara Rosenkranz. These three leaders provided a fun-filled and informative program on the benefits of belonging to SPJST. After the program, door prizes were awarded and a lunch of cold cuts, chips and dessert was served. An hour of fellowship was enjoyed by all.

There were fifteen members and sixteen guests in attendance.

The next meeting date is May 2, 1999 at the Jourdanton Bank at 2:30 p.m.

The meeting of the Friendship Club was held on Wednesday, April 7 at the Sokol with 43 members present. Guests were Regina Hammonds, sister of Georgia Davidson and Debbie Farris, daughter of Pauline Cox. President Jo Prochaska called the meeting to order and the Pledge of Allegiance was recited. Secretary Merle Kovar read the minutes from the previous meeting and Lydia Alholm gave the treasurer's report. Both were accepted as presented.

Linda Horner, Sunshine Chairperson, reported get well cards were sent to Jeanie Mason, Frank Kovar, Janie Cepica, Frances Matthews and Geneva Hennessey. A birthday card was sent to Maria Prill.

A note was read from Louise Oujesky thanking the club for the get well card signed by all the members. It was nice to have all the members on last month's sick list with us at the meeting.

Food Items to be Collected Alice Barnes reported on items needed for St. Thomas' food pantry.

Since the meeting was being held at the Sokol, it was decided to wait and bring food items to our May meeting.

The singing of "Happy Birthday" went out to Lydia Alholm, Linda Horner, Natalie Maly and Annie Whitsell. May you all have many more. As is our tradition, the birthday celebrants always get to be first in line for lunch. This is, first following Rosie Steinman. The reason?

Rosie heads up our games and needs plenty of time to finish lunch, so it is in our rules that she gets to eat first.

Door prizes were won by Alma Anderson, Margie Kret, Louise Oujesky and Lillian Smith. We had so much excitement going on that I didn't see what they received and didn't get the names of the persons that brought them.

White Elephant Gifts Exchanged We had our annual gift wrapped white elephant auction which is always so much fun. Our own Anna Sustale was auctioneer. She had bids coming in from all directions, and not only did she do a terrific job, she was also most entertaining. Wonder what comedian school she went to. I mad two acquisitions, one being a tea pot with filter and second being a teddy bear which my great nephew, Tanner, in Ennis will get. It was a lot of fun and everyone seemed pleased with their sight unseen purchases.

President Jo reminded Alice Barnes, Martha Boenisch, Joe Kozel and Mary Kozel that they are scheduled to be hostesses in May. It was also decided to postpone our annual bake sale until fall.

Lydia and Roy Alholm reported they attended the wedding of their oldest grandson, Matthew Alholm, in Arizona. She said the wedding was lovely and they enjoyed all the parties and dinner/reception. Lydia said the weather was great and geraniums and palm trees were beautiful as the wedding was outdoors.

Czech Serenade One special attraction at our meeting this month was the serenading in Czech by Elsie Anders, Frances Matthews, Roy Alholm and Frank Kovar with Joe Kozel on the accordion. They were quite good and we will want a repeat next meeting. Did you get this? Roy Alholm singing Czech. You probably don't believe me, but he really did. Of course, he probably had no idea what he was singing, but he can really read Czech.

I've heard him.

Mary's Back Katherine Garrison reported that Mary Pavey returned safely to Alabama and was currently in the hospital. She is doing well and is now residing at a Rehab-Health Care Center. Her mailing address is 2634 Calumet Drive, Brownsboro, Alabama, 35741. We wish you well, Mary.

Linda Horner and Lucille Kret went to Bossier City recently to visit relatives and to do a little playing.

Hope you two come back winners.

Sympathy goes out to Carrie Milan on the loss of her mother, Jewell Clark. Granny, as I knew her, was a lovely lady, so full of life, loved to dance and would have been 96 years young on her coming birthday. May her soul rest in peace.

In Memoriam Expression of Sympathy We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of Lodge Karel Havlicek, No. 4, Hallettsville, Texas, on behalf of our entire membership wish to express our sincerest and deepest sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge brother, EDWIN V. GALLIA, JR. who passed away Thursday, March 18, 1999, at the age of 71 years. He was born April 16, 1927, in Lavaca County to Edwin Vladimir, Sr. and Annie Zapalac Gallia.

On April 30, 1948, he married Marjorie Vasek in Hallettsville. He was a veteran of World War II, and for 42 years was employed at newspapers in Hallettsville and surrounding areas.

For 26 years, he played with the George Machart Orchestra and several years of ,:r that, with other bands. He was a member of Vsetin CzechMoravian Brethren Church, the Lion's Club and the American Legion.

Survivors include his wife, Marjorie Vasek Gallia; two sons, Edwin V. Gallia, III and wife, Rosanne, of Hallettsville and Emery M. Gallia and wife, Kimberly, of Seabrook; two sisters, Hilda Heiman of Shiner and Sylvia Chudej of Schulenburg; a brother, Alec A. Gallia, of Dallas, and three grandchildren, Anna, Emily and Karis Gallia. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation began at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, March 20 at Kubena Funeral Home. Prayer service was conducted at 7:30 p.m., Saturday at the Kubena Funeral Home with Father John Peters officiating. Services were conducted at 2 p.m., Sunday, March 21 at Kubena Funeral 'Nome with Reverend Henry Beseda officiating. Burial followed in the Hallettsville City Cemetery.

He was a longtime member of the Brethren Church and also First United Methodist Church of Cedar Hill and a member of SPJST Lodge 84, Dallas. He retired from L.T.V. after 39 years of service.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Kornellie Marek, of Dallas; two sons, James A. Marek, of Dallas and David Marek and daughter in-law, Helen of Colorado Springs, Colorado; four grandchildren; three brothers and two sisters.

Services were held on March 4th at Laurel Land Memorial Chapel with Reverend Sammy Hargrove officiating.

Interment was at Laurel Land Memorial Park.

Expression of Sympathy We, the undersigned Resolution Committee on behalf of the entire membership of Lodge 160, express sincere sympathy to the family and friends of EVELYN DRGAC. Mrs. Drgac, born November 1, 1916, in Caldwell, was the eldest daughter of Walter and Annie Drgac.

Evelyn died Wednesday, April 7, 1999, in San Angelo.

Evelyn attended schools in Caldwell, moving to San Angelo in 1936 along with her family. After the death of her mother and brother, and serious illness of her father, Evelyn, along with her older brothers and sisters, assumed_the responsibility of helping raise the younger members of the family: Evelyn's contribution was to stay home and do the cooking and household chores. To help with financial needs, Evelyn also raised poultry.

Evelyn had an early interest in music and her church activities, serving for many years as organist and pianist for the Wall Brethren Church.

She was a faithful member and worker in her church until declining health prevented her from participating. She was an honorary member of the Wall Christian Sisters. She attended Hus School in the winter of 1939. She was also a member of RVOS, SPJST and Mutual Aid. Evelyn had a love for flowers and gardening. She loved children and provided child care in her home for many years.

Funerat service was at 11 a.m.

Saturday, April 10, 1999 at Johnson's Funeral Home with the Reverend Tommy Tallas, pastor of Wall Brethren Church, officiating. Interment was in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Marvin, W.C. and Albert; one sister, Viola Krupala; one nephew; and one great-nephew.

Survivors include two sisters, Dorothy Kokes and husband, Louis, and Clarice Drgac, all of San Angelo; two brothers, Hubert and wife, Noemi, of San Angelo and J.D. Drgac and wife, Loretta, of Odessa; one brother in-law, Edwin Krupala, of San Angelo; seven nephews and three nieces; one aunt, Lottie Drgac, of Caldwell; and a host of cousins, greatnephews and great nieces and one great-great-niece.

Mr. Gold was born September 30, 1916, in Burleson County to Joseph and Frances Vlaka Gold. He was a retired mechanic and a U.S. Army veteran of WWII. He was preceded in death by two brothers, four sisters and his parents.

Survivors include his wife, Annie Gold, of Caldwell; two sons and daughters in-law, Bob and Shirley Gold, of Giddings and Jerry and Janell Gold, of Dime Box; a daughter and son in-law, Joyce and Dr. Lynn New, of Longview; three sisters, Christina Gold, of Caldwell, Bessie Gold, of Crosby and Minnie Williams, of Houston; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Friday, February 12, 1999 at 11 a.m. from St. Mary's Catholic Church in Caldwell, with Msgr. Ernilian Foltyn officiating.

Interment was in St. Mary's Cemetery with military honors under the auspices of VFW Post 4458 of Caldwell. Pall bearers were Mark Cunningham, Keith Kubena, Greg Gold Jeremy Gold, Scott Martin, Trent Logston and Brent Dornburg.

Phillips and Luckey Funeral Home of Caldwell was in charge of arrangements.

brother, RANDALL LEROY EDWARDS, age 46, of Robstown, who died Tuesday, March 23, 1999.

He attended St. John Parochial School in Robstown as a youth.

During this time, he served as an altar boy at St. John Catholic Church and learned to play the guitar.

He was Boy Scout and Little League member during his youth.

He graduated from Robstown High School in 1971. After graduation, while working at Reynold's Metals, hew as stricken by a stoke in 1983.

After this time, he courageously tried to maintain an independent lifestyle despite the disabilities he sustained due to the stroke.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Vlasta Mrazek, and grandfather, Tony Mrazek and paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. O.B. Edwards, Sr. He is survived by his parents, Aubrey and Darlene Edwards, Sr., of Robstown; one brother, Sandy, Edwards, of Corpus Christi; one sister, Candy Hunter, of Robstown; one nephew, James Edwards, of Northwest Corpus Christi; one niece, Stacey Hunter, of Robstown; and one aunt, Mrs. Cleo Edmunds, of San Antonio.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, William F. Hoffman; her sister, Mary Menis; brothers, Ludwig, Anton and Emil Kubenka. She is survived by her son, William A Hoffman and numerous nieces and nephews.

A mass of the Resurrection was celebrated at 10 a.m., Monday, April 5, 1999 at Vincent De Paul Catholic Church with Reverend Mercurio Montenegro, celebrant. Rite of committal followed at Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery.

More Summer Fun!

Dear Readers, The youth of District One had a very eventful summer. Besides our usual activities, camp and Youth Achievement Day (YAD), we also took a trip to Schlitterbahn. First, a report on camp.

Sixty youth and 23 adults descended on Camp Val Verde on July 21st. The camp theme was Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow. One day of camp focused on yesterday and all the events of the day centered around Native American Indians. Bud and Carol Petty, along with Mr. Abs joined us on Thursday to share their knowledge and skills of the Native Americans. Bud supervised the youth in making Indian medicine bags while dressed as a medicine man.

Carol led a session of bead making while Abs demonstrated the fine art of Dy, tho1. ariowhcad came home with a homemade arrowhead. Adding to the day's events were horseback riding, canoeing and archery. The day was completed with a campfire at the ceremonial grounds.

Boy, did Bud and Carol do an excellent job planning the day's events. Thanks a lot.

Outdoor Activities

The rest of the time at camp was filled with swimming, games, hiking, cookouts and just good old-fashioned fun. Fifty-six campers participated in the ropes course on Wednesday. The youth had a special visit by President

On July 1, 1998, approximately 100 members of District One filled the parking lot at the Caldwell Brookshire Brothers to board two charter buses destination Schlitterbahn in New Braunfels. We arrived at 10 a.m. and found a nice place to eat our picnic lunches. Everyone went on their ways for a day filled with waterpark excitement and visiting with other youth club members from around the district. We departed at 6 p.m. and headed back home, wet, sunburned and exhausted.

Hopes are to be able to go to Schlitterbahn again in 1999.

Wow! Finding this letter and pictures has excited me about this summer's activities, which are just a few months away. I hope you all are looking forward to all the fun activities planned for this summer. One thing ,crot nI2nned fcir camn this upar is astronomer to come one night with his powerful telescope. I got to see the rings around Saturn at this year's Youth Leaders' Retreat. It was awesome! I'll be visiting each youth club in District One during the month of May. See you then. We are planning a Schlitterbahn trip again this year!!

District Five Youth Counselor reports on field trip Dear SPJST Readers, Even though it has been a long and fun-filled day, I am compelled to write this letter at 10:30 p.m. Today, 14 youth and adults from District Five took our annual field trip. There were varied reasons why more youth could not attend, but this just has to be taken in stride and continue with the trip as planned. Wow!!! What a trip we had!

Our day started at 8 a.m. We met the Goodman Bus and driver, Ray at Lodge 88. Our trip was to visit the George Bush Library, at Texas A&M University. When we arrived, the tour guide divided our youth into three teams and they had a scavenger hunt.

The youth became competitive as to who would compete the hunt first. It was Bradley Hale, Jason Castillo and Kyle Castillo, who would win. The youth found this very informative and got them very interested in the museum. All the youth said they had learned something today. Each one had a different thought. Krystle Bender enjoyed the information on Barbara Bush. Robert Castillo, enjoyed looking at the World War II vintage airplane, which hangs overhead. Robert said, "I am going to come back next week; one and a half hours is just not enough time." I again, enjoyed the special exhibit on Kennebunkport, Maine. It really is a

So after driving around for almost an hour, we finally found it. But, the line was outside the door. We got back on the bus and drove some more and then enjoyed lunch at CiCi's Pizza.

Our afternoon visit was scheduled at the Brazos Valley Museum of Natural History. The Backyard Monsters 2 Exhibit was huge and good. We saw giant beetle, a tarantula, a caterpillar and other large insects. We visited in the Discovery Room and watched the queen bee and the other worker bees making a honeycomb. They had a cute

baby opossum and the youth wanted to adopt him, but he was already adopted.

The youth voted to adopt Carey, the iguana. Before we left the museum, Bradley Hale asked how were we going to get Carey on the bus. We again explained we were not taking her home, but leaving her at the museum for everyone to enjoy and we were just helping to pay for Carey's food and to help buy a larger cage. So, if you go to the Brazos Valley Museum of Natural History, for the next six months, you'll see it noted that SPJST District Five is the adoptee.

Our trip home was an adventure in itself. About six miles outside of the Bryan-College Station area, our bus got a flat tire. Ray did an excellent job getting us safely off the road. We had plenty of time to pass, until another bus could come from Houston to pick us up.

There were so many people who stopped and asked if we needed help, a telephone, food, drinks or just anything.

We took the youth on a nature hike, picked flowers, played games and also rested under an intersection bridge to take shelter out of the late afternoon sun.

We walked up the incline where we could touch the underside of Highway Six and we could feel the cars drive over us.

Marie, Robert, E.J. and I would like to thank the youth for keeping their spirits up and not complaining. The youth were rewarded with a great dinner at the Hempstead Inn. The food was served family style and was excellent. returned back to Lodge 88.

So, if you're reading this letter and you know someone from the Cy-Fair Transportation Department of the Brazos County Sheriff's Department, please pass on this letter and thanks from all of us who took this fun trip!

Marcy Dorotik was also present to give us imformation about YAD and the District trip to San Antonio. After the meeting the youth participated in an Easter Egg Hunt.

Dear Vestnik Readers, Lodge 9 Youth Club had their monthly meeting on Wednesday, April 7th. Our community service was to clean and water the rose bushes at the SPJST Hall.

Our speaker was Dennis Gaas who talked to us about the Chili Fest.

We discussed the District One Spring Meeting.

Our charities and community service projects for May are to take flowers to the cemetery and canned food to Christian Care and make a donation to St. Jude's Children's hospital 6:30 p.m.

Lodge 29, Taylor Youth Club plans summer trip to Port Aransas Dear Vestnik Readers, The April meeting of SPJST Lodge 29, Taylor Youth Club was called to order at 6 p.m. by President Chad Cervenka.

This month's fund raising plans are to have a car wash on April 17th. This month's social was an Easter egg hunt for the younger members, and a scavenger hunt for the older members.

Our Youth Leader Carol Tallas talked about our summer trip. We will be going to Port Aransas, July 23rd26th. Then we discussed the car wash and bake sale, and also the Mayfete which is set for May 2nd at 1:30 in the afternoon. We talked about YAD and camp, and that we need to start working on group talent.

The activity after the meeting was making button flowers.

The next youth club meeting will be May 1st at 9 a.m., followed by Mayfete practice at 10 a.m.

47, Seaton Youth Club members enjoy Easter egg hunt at April meeting Lodge

Dear Readers, We had our April meeting on April 11, 1999 at 2 pm. After our meeting, we had an Easter Egg hunt for all of the children. On Friday, May 21st, we will have a bake sale at the lodge during the lodge cook-off.

All District Youth Achievement Day (YAD) cards, royalty cards and speeches need to be turned into Donna by June 1. District YAD will be June 27th at Cyclone. Bet thinking about what

kinds of booths you want to have at our picnic on June 6th.

Leaders in Training (LIT) camp is June 4 - 6. Get your forms from either Donna or Patsy. District Two summer camp will be from July 9th through 12th.

Remember, you must make at least seven SPJST meetings to participate in YAD, Royalty and summer camp. Our next meeting will be on May 2.

Dear Members and Readers, On April 11, 1999 District Five went on its field trip. The day started out with a bus ride to the George Bush Library. At the library, we saw a short film. Then we got to go on a scavenger hunt.

After we left the library, we were planning to go to Golden Corral, but Mr.Castillo forgot where it was. So we went to Ci Ci's Pizza. After we left Ci Ci's Pizza, we headed out to the Brazos Valley Museum. At the museum, I saw that we could adopt animals, so the district ended up adopting a green iguana, named Carey. How this works is we pay an x -amount of money to go towards the payment for her food, water, and a new cage in the future.

When we left the museum to go on our trip home, the bus got a flat tire and we thc vu a. It turned out that we were stranded for a few hours, but people stopped and asked if we needed help. After the second Goodman bus came, we got to go home.

On the way home, we stopped at a bed and breakfast inn and we got a good home cooked meal. We got back at Lodge 88 at around 9 p.m. That was a fun trip and an exciting ending.

Native Czech to present free concert April 29 After a dramatic escape from the former communist Czechoslovakia, in 1986, bass-baritone Michael Sust made his way to Boston, Massachusetts, where he continued his career as an opera singer and music instructor.

"With the cunning of that old hundredeyed government in Prague, I wondered,a s I labored to escape, if I would ever sing in safety and freedom," Michael said, "and then my life unfolded in Boston like a dream that came true." Having studied voice, piano and composition in the National Conservatory of Music in the Czech Republic, Sust earned his Doctorate in Musical Arts at Boston University's School for the Arts in 1997.

It will include a special appearance by the vocal group, Triomph, presenting contemporary, sacred madrigals written by Michael Sust as well as chamber music by Bach arranged for two flutes and clarinet.

In March, 1998, Michael Sust was appointed the Director of "The 6:05 Service," a dynamic and growing contemporary worship service at Grace Presbyterian Church of Houston.

Michael and his wife, Colleen have two daughters, Anna and Christina.
