Minutes of the January 12, 13 and 14, 1999 Regular meeting of the Supreme Lodge SPJST Held at the Home Office, Temple, Texas The meeting was called to order by Chairman of the Board Vanek at 8:30 a.m. with the following Supreme Lodge members present: Howard Leshikar, President Leonard D. The Supreme Lodge Members recited the Pledge of Allegiance and observed a moment of silence in memory of deceased members.

Chairman Vanek turned the chair over to President Leshikar for the election of Chairman of the Board and Vice Chairman of the Board. Director Broz nominated Director Vanek to be the Chairman of the Board. Director Klinkovsky moved, seconded by Director Victorick, to elect Director Vanek as Chairman of the Board by acclamation. The motion carried unanimously.

Director Bayer nominated Director Broz to be the Vice Chairman of the Board.

Director Hanus moved, seconded by Director Victorick, to elect Director Broz as Vice Chairman of the Board by acclamation. The motion carried unanimously.

Chairman Vanek thanked everyone for electing him Chairman of the Board and for having trust in him. Director Broz expressed his appreciation for being elected.

Chairman Vanek welcomed Editor Vanicek to the Supreme Lodge meeting.

MINUTES—The minutes were reviewed page by page. Director Bayer moved, seconded by Director Broz to accept the minutes. The motion carried unanimously.

AUDIT—The bank audit was done December 31, 1998 by Director Klinkovsky, Vice President Mikeska, Secretary-Treasurer Anglin, and Independent Auditor Henry L. S. Jezek.

The following audit assignments were made: AUTOMOBILE AND ATTENDANCE LOGS—Director Broz and Director Krizan VOUCHERS AND PURCHASE ORDERS—Director Bayer, Director Klinkovsky, and Director Victorick

State Field Manager McBride and wife Francis McBride were welcomed to the meeting. Vice President Mikeska made a presentation of a plaque and monetary gift in honor of SFM McBride's 20 years of service with SPJST.

Recessed at 8:40 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. to complete the audit.

Director Klinkovsky reported that the securities in the bank were found to be in order, and there are a number of bonds coming due in 1999 and 2000.

Director Broz and Director Krizan reported the automobile logs need to include who drove the vehicle, the destination and the beginning and ending mileage.

Director Klinkovsky, Director Bayer and Director Victorick had some questions concerning some of the vouchers. Following a discussion, it was decided that members who represent their district and live outside their district should only be paid mileage from their Home Lodge to their destination. The officers were complimented on their good record keeping.

There was a discussion concerning the purchase order books. There is to be only one purchase order book and it is to be kept in the Secretary-Treasurer's Department. An explanation as to which department requested the purchase order is to be included on the form.

Director Hanus reported the general ledger was found to be in order and thanked Financial Secretary Mikulas for his help in answering questions during the audit.

The Supreme Lodge went into executive session at 2:15 p.m. to consider a personnel matter and for the officers and editor to make recommendations for salaries of the employees they supervise.

The executive session recessed at 4 p.m. until 8:32 a.m. so the officers and directors could tour the Peaceable Kingdom Retreat for Children, Inc. facilities.

Chairman Vanek made a report on the excellent facilities at Peaceable Kingdom and how much the tour was enjoyed by those who attended. The Supreme Lodge went back in executive session to complete deliberation concerning salaries.

Recess was taken from 10 am to 10: 15 a.m.

Chairman Vanek welcomed Dick Archer and Dr. Marc Nigliazzo, President of Temple College. Dr. Nigliazzo made a presentation concerning Some of the advances Temple College is making and also reported on training the college is offering different businesses. They presented a request for the Board to consider using part of the builiding for items from the museum as a rotating display and also agree to work with SPJST training and education. Temple College would like some finanacial commitment that would be matched by another source.

The Supreme Lodge went back into executive session at 10:50 until 11:40.

Director Bayer moved to adjourn the executive session, Director Victorick seconded the motion. The motion carried unanimously.

OLD BUSINESS: President Leshikar expressed his and Mary's appreciation of the flowers and cards sent by the Board and members upon the death of his father-in-law.

CREDIT CARDS - President Leshikar provided information about SPJST offering credit cards to our members. The benefit to the SPJST would be $1.00 for every account opened, $1.00 for every account renewed, .2% of all retail purchases and $20.00 for each account opened by SPJST's efforts (web site, newspaper, etc.)

Legal Advisor Kacir moved for President Leshikar to provide more information about whether or not the credit card company would be interested in proceeding, if SPJST won't provide a complete member listing. Motion seconded by Director Bayer. Voting in favor were Financial Secretary Mikulas, Legal Advisor Kacir, Vice President Mikeska, Secretary-Treasurer Anglin, Director Bayer, Director Krizan, Director Vanek, Director Broz, Director Hanus and Director Klinkovsky.

Voting against were President Leshikar, and Director Victorick.

CEMETERY MARKERS—President Leshikar provided approximate costs for having bronze cemetery markers made by a local granite company. There was a lengthy discussion concerning cemetery markers. Further information was requested to be provided at the next meeting.

AD VALOREM TAXES—President Leshikar reported on visiting with Mr. James Ward, Grand Secretary of the Masons, about their working with the SPJST on exempting lodge buildings from ad valorem taxes The Knights of Columbus also have agreed to work towards exempting lodge buildings from ad valorem taxes. There have been talks with several individuals about one of them becoming a legislative liaison person to keep track of upcoming legislation. The local organizations are going to need to have their members to talk to their state representatives and state senators about the need for the ad valorem exemption.

Director Krizan moved that SPJST spearhead the ad valorem legislation/education project with a budget not to exceed $45,000.00. This budget is to be shared by the fraternals that are participating in this effort. Director Broz seconded the motion. The motion carried unanimously.

DISCOUNT TO MEMBERS—President Leshikar presented information providing membership cards to the SPJST members. President Leshikar recommended the cards would start for members age 16 and all cards would be reissued every 5 years. President Leshikar moved to bring more information to the April Supreme Lodge meeting on membership cards. Vice President Mikeska seconded the motion. The motion carried unanimously.

STATE YOUTH DIRECTOR—State Youth Director Zavodny's report was reviewed. Information was presented on the lodges that have youth clubs being reorganized or started. After a lengthy discussion, it was decided that if the SPJST Royalty were not on the Texas Fraternal Congress youth section program, they would find another appearance for them. Legal Advisor Kacir complimented the State Youth Director; President Leshikar's Department and the Home Office staff for their efforts at the Christmas Parade and Holiday Open House.

President Leshikar moved to accept the revised recommended changes to the youth rulebook with Vice President Mikeska seconding the motion. The motion carried unanimously.

STATE FRATERNAL ACTIVITIES COORDINATOR—State FAC Rosenkranz's report was reviewed.

LIBRARY, ARCHIVES, MUSEUM —The museum report was reviewed.

There were 461 visitors from Texas and 22 visitors from outside of Texas.

President Leshikar reported on the progress for utilizing of storage space in the basement area.

SALES—Vice President Mikeska reported Albin Machu was the top producer for 1998 with 60 applications and $2,343,000.00 insurance written. He also reported applications and insurance written were up and earned premiums were down 3.09% for the year.

Vice President Mikeska reported the goals for the Insurance Department in 1999 included having E-mail available, a web site, the capabilities of accepting applications over the Internet, certificates to be issued by computer, to have existing sales representatives contact our current members for servicing and move forward and be ready for whatever happens in the legislature concerning licensing.

Another of the goals is to have four new lodges chartered in 1999 and twenty new sales representatives.

NEW LODGES—Vice President Mikeska reported on new lodges in process are Lodge 205, Terrell, Lodge 206, Mexia, Lodge 207, Carrizo Spring, Lodge 208, Graham, Lodge 209, Hamilton, Lodge 210, Fairfield, Lodge 211, Palestine, Lodge 212, Boerne, Lodge 213, Fredericksburg, Lodge 214, Beeville. Lodge 204 in Stephenville has been chartered.

Vice President Mikeska moved to extend the expiration date to April 30, 1999 for chartering new lodges in progress. Seconded by Director Bayer. The motion carried unanimously.

STATE FIELD MANAGER—State Field Manager McBride's report was reviewed. Vice President Mikeska complimented State Field Manager McBride on the good work he has been doing.

NEW PRODUCTS—Vice President Mikeska reported on the progress being made on the accelerated living benefit rider and the term to age 100 rider.

INCENTIVE TO SALES REPRESENTATIVES—Vice President Mikeska reported on the yearlong sales incentives, which include: 1. Monthly recognition of the state top producer based on number of applications, state top producer based on amount of insurance written, district top producer based on number of applications and amount of insurance written. 2. Annual recognition of top district producer in each category, state top producer in each category. 3. The consistency club. 4. The million-dollar producer. 5. The fraternal insurance counselors program. 6. An incentive trip. Each district that attains its quota for insurance written will be given a banquet/dinner for all the producing sales representatives in that district.

LICENSING/LEGISLATIVE—Vice President Mikeska expressed a need to have a way to track and monitor the proposed and pending legislation. A lengthy discussion followed concerning the legislature and the pending licensing of our sales representatives. As directed by the Supreme Lodge, Vice President Mikeska met with several insurance companies about sponsoring SPJST sales representatives for licensing until such time that legislation passes and SPJST can sponsor their sales representatives for licensing. Vice President Mikeska, the State Field Manager, and State Field Representatives are scheduled to attend a class to prepare us for the new legislation.

INTERNET, WEB SITE, E-MAIL—Vice President Mikeska moved that the Supreme Lodge authorize the officers to set up a project team for Internet, web site, E-mail and if more funds are needed than the officers are authorized to spend for a purchase, there will be a mail poll for authorization for the expense. Legal Advisor Kacir seconded the motion. The motion carried unanimously.

TARGET LODGE—Vice President Mikeska proposed the definition of a target lodge to be a lodge that will receive the special focus and attention of our field and resource people including the director and Supreme Lodge officers. The goal is to help the lodge move from their current level of activity to a higher level and to improve their ability to make SPJST benefits and programs available in their communities (social programs for adult and children, scholarships, mortgage loans, etc.).

The meeting recessed at 5:00 p.m. to 5:15 p.m.

LODGE COMPLIANCE—Secretary-Treasurer Anglin reported Lodge 188, Centerville is the only lodge that probably should have submitted 990/990-T forms and has not done so.

Secretary-Treasurer Anglin reported forty lodges have submitted the 1999 officers of their lodges.

VESTNIK—Financial Secretary Mikulas reported the subscription list for those who received the Vestnik amounted to 10,145. The printing costs remains at $1,125.00 per week and postage costs per week amounts, to $1,787.00 per week.

Wednesday, February 17, 1999—VESTNIK/5 FRATERNALIST OF THE YEAR— The fraternalist of the year is Cyrill Pokladnik with the honorable mention being Clara Broz, Robert Dobecka, Charles Garrett and Ann Schoeneman, YOUTH DEPARTMENT—A copy of the 1998 SPJST Youth Department expense summary was reviewed. There was a discussion concerning the liability for the camps. According to the summary there are approximately 310 active youth club members and expenses amounted to approximately $614.00 per child.

There were only 17 out of the 26 youth clubs reporting.

There was a discussion concerning how general advertising should be promoted if there were only 310 active youth. Vice President Mikeska as a strong proponent of the youth program expressed concern because of the declining numbers in the youth department. He pointed out that it is extremely important that any sod ety is able to evaluate programs every five to ten years.

Chairman Vanek appointed Director Bayer and Director Krizan to the special committee to meet with the DYC's in October and the same two directors to meet with President Leshikar to evaluate the youth program and make suggestions to the Supreme Lodge in the April meeting.

EDITOR - Editor Vanicek's report was reviewe CALENDARS—Financial Secretary Mikulas reported there were 26,935 calendars mailed in 1998 at a cost of $3,313.56 for postage.

BUDGET—Financial Secretary Mikulas went over the 1998 budget and compared the budgeted amount to the actual figures. There was 8% more income received than budgeted and 12% more expenses than budgeted.

REFUNDS TO LODGES—Financial Secretary reported on lodges that would not be eligible for the refund to lodges. Those lodges not eligible were: Lodge 8—Weimar Lodge 16—Bila Hora Lodge 57—Gonzales Lodge 82— Ennis Lodge 85—Munday Lodge 89— Rosebud Lodge 90—Stamford Lodge 114—Fairchild Lodge 149— Alvin Lodge 167—Penelope Lodge 171—Lockhart Lodge 181—Conroe Lodge 188—Centerville Lodge 195—Cleburne Each lodge refund would be computed at a rate of $1.00 per paid up certificate and $8.50 per premium paying certificate, excluding annuities. The total refund will amount to approximately $163,000.00. Financial Secretary moved to accept the formula for figuring the refunds. Vice President Mikeska seconded the motion. The motion carried unanimously.

PENDING LOANS—Legal Advisor Kacir reported there are three loans, which have not followed closing instructions or returned the loan papers. There is an increasing problem with title companies that do not comply with closing instructions.

LITIGATIONS—Legal Advisor Kacir reported on the mortgages and certificates in bankruptcy and the mortgages in process and possible litigation.

EMPLOYEE HANDBOOK—Legal Advisor Kacir moved for reconsideration of three parts of the handbook. (1. Sick leave, accident and illness 2. Comp time, 3. Drug and alcohol policy and Search and seizures.) Financial Secretary Mikulas seconded the motion. Those in favor were President Leshikar, Vice President Mikeska, Secretary-Treasurer Anglin, Financial Secretary Mikulas, Legal Advisor Kacir, Director Victorick, Director Klinkovsky, Director Broz, Director Hanus, Director Vanek, and Director Bayer. Voting against was Director Krizan.

Legal Advisor Kacir moved to approve the changes to the sick leave, accident, and illness section of the Employee Handbook, with Vice President Mikeska seconding the motion. The motion passed unanimously.

Legal Advisor Kacir moved, and Director Klinkovsky seconded to approve the changes to the comp time section of the Employee Handbook. The motion carried unanimously.

Legal Advisor Kacir moved to approve the changes of the Employee Handbook pertaining to the surveillance and security equipment section seconded by Director Krizan Voting in favor were Vice President Mikeska, Financial Secretary Mikulas, Director Krizan, Director Bayer, Director Broz, Legal Advisor Kacir, Director Vanek, Secretary-Treasurer Anglin and Director Hanus. Voting against President Leshikar, Director Klinkovsky and Director Victorick.

Motion carried.

ADVERTISING—The Editor expressed the policy that advertising in the Vestnik was not to exceed one page per issue. The Editor is to provide information on how more advertising would affect the postage of mailing the Vestnik.

Legal Advisor Kacir moved for the historic year 2000 SPJST calendar to be done in house with the Editor being in charge under the direction of the Supreme Lodge. Motion seconded by Director Krizan. Voting in favor were Vice President Mikeska, Secretary-Treasurer Anglin, Financial Secretary Mikulas, Legal Advisor Kacir, Director Victorick, Director Klinkovsky, Director Krizan, Director Broz, Director Hanus, Director Vanek and Director Bayer. President Leshikar abstained. Motion passed. Recess was taken at 9:50 am until 10:15 am.

DISTRICT ONE—Director Victorick reported on attending the Texas Fraternal Congress, sales representatives classes, installation of officers of Lodge 189 and Lodge 17.

DISTRICT TWO—Director Klinkovsky attended the DYC meeting, Texas Fraternal Congress, Lodge 47, Seaton and 187, Round Rock sales representatives classes and helped with volleyball tournament. He also installed the officers of Lodge 187, Round Rock. He thanked everyone for their prayers, cards and thoughts during his recent hospital stay.

Lodge 15, Buckholts has twelve new members and increased attendance at meetings. He reported on the success of fund raisers at Lodge 24, Cyclone and 47, Seaton.

DISTRICT THREE—Director Krizan expressed concern about whether or not enough emphasis is being placed on the target lodge program. There is a need for a total commitment from all departments and their respective field people to continually promote the target lodge program when they attend lodge or district meetings. Director Krizan moved to reaffirm our commitment to the target lodge program. Seconded by Legal Advisor Kacir. Motion carried unanimously.

Director Krizan stated he continues to work with Lodge 5, Pilot Point/Tioga, Lodge 35, Elk, Lodge 54, West, Lodge 110, Kaufman, Lodge 178, Longview, and Lodge 195, Cleburne as his target lodges. Lodge 5, Pilot Point/Tioga continues to grow in membership, attained platinum award for 1998, has purchased a future lodge site, and is sponsoring a golf tournament on April 18, 1999. Director Krizan moved the Supreme Lodge be a food sponsor for the golf tournament at a cost of up to $250.00. Vice President Mikeska seconded the motion. Motion Carried unanimously.

Lodge 54, West continues to be an active lodge by attaining an incentive award each year, has a new president for the coming year, recently completed a face-lift on the front part of their building, and continues to have successful fund raisers for a future addition to their lodge. Director Krizan complimented their lodge for their activities and expressed his desire that they consider establishing a new youth club and holding monthly meetings.

In regard to Lodge 178, Longview, Director Krizan stated little progress has been made since the last meeting, but expressed a desire for a re-doubling of our efforts to maintain our foot-hole (sic) in this area of Texas.

Director Krizan reported that Lodge 110, Kaufman and Lodge 205, Terrell are still working towards organizing a new lodge in their area. He also reported that from our state field representative Lodge 195, Cleburne has expressed interest in being reactivated and is willing to accept new sales representatives and officers.

Director Krizan reported that Lodge 35, Elk has elected a new slate of officers for the year, attendance at monthly meetings has increased from a handful to twenty average, and that new activities are being planned.

Director Krizan then presented the Supreme Lodge with information showing that diversification of our investment portfolio to include more equities would

6/VESTNIK—Wednesday, February 17, 1999 actually reduce our risk factor and create a potential for more reward. He further stated he wanted to increase the current investment policy for equities so that the officers would have the ability to go in that direction if the need would arise.

After some discussion, Director Krizan moved to increase the current investment policy of 4% for equities to 10%.

The wording in the Investment Policy under common stock would read "The total invested in stocks is not to exceed 10% of the assets at time of purchase. Stock decision are to be made by Supreme Lodge Officers." Motion seconded by Secretary-Treasurer Anglin and carried unanimously.

Director Krizan reported that he and State Field Manager McBride recently visited Honorary Director Pokladnik at home following his third stroke and that Honorary Director Pokladnik said to say "hi" to the officers and directors for him.

Director Krizan then asked that all members of the Supreme Lodge keep Honorary Director Pokladnik and his family in their thoughts and prayers.

Director Krizan reported he had made a $100.00 donation on behalf of the SPJST to the "Santa's Helpers" program administered by the mail carriers of Waco, Texas.

DISTRICT FOUR—Director Broz reported that he had been working towards getting new sales representatives for his district. He is trying to locate a sales representative for the Wichita Falls area. He reported that he installed the new slate of officers of Lodge 49, Rowena and Lodge 73, Seymour. He thanked SecretaryTreasurer Anglin for attending Lodge 160 meeting. He reported that Lodge 160, San Angelo made platinum award and Lodge 73, Seymour first step award. He appreciates the officers being informative and providing encouragement.

DISTRICT FIVE— Director Hanus made several mortgage inspections and installed officers at Lodge 191, Lufkin, 172, Pasadena, 142, Houston and 88, Houston and youth club officers at Lodge 88. He stated he continues to explain about ad valorem taxes to those interested.

DISTRICT SEVEN—Director Bayer reported he attended a meeting at Lodge 3, Yoakum, which decided to merge with Lodge 63, Sweet Home. He and Director Vanek installed officers at Lodge 31 until the merger goes through. Lodge 107, Floresville elected new officers and is hooking up to community water. Lodge 93, Hobson elected officers and requested annuity information, a listing of members, and they made a donation to scholarship fund. There was a meeting with officers of Lodge 202, Jourdanton, by President Leshikar and Director Bayer where the lodge voted to begin monthly meetings. Director Bayer installed the officers of Lodge 202 and is pleased with their progress. He also attended the district meeting, district insurance meeting, and DYC meeting. Director Bayer reported Lodge 107, Floresville had a clean-up drive for flood area and a car in the peanut festival parade. He reported on new sales representatives in San Antonio, Beeville and Johnson City.

DISTRICT SIX—Director Vanek reported target Lodge 8, Weimar has a new sales representative and he has sold a certificate. Lodge 148, Blessing is now holding meetings and has had luck with the meetings. Lodge 41, Port Lavaca is now having monthly meetings and have two sales representatives. He also reported on installation of officers of Lodge 23, Moravia, Lodge 4, Hallettsville and the youth officers of Lodge 4. He attended the social, the meeting, and installed the officers at Lodge 30, Taiton.

Director Vanek expressed a concern over the number of statewide charities and the need for fewer charities per year. Director Vanek presented information from a member from District One about receiving compensation if the member recommend loans to the SPJST.

Recess was taken from 12:10 p.m. until 12:45 p.m Chairman Vanek welcomed Michael Morris to the meeting. Mr. Morris was Mr. SPJST from 1992 to 1996.

LINES OF BUSINESS—Vice President Mikeska reported Actuary John Agee is doing a study of profitability on Universal Life, Annuities and all other lines of business. This information should be available during the April Supreme Lodge meeting.

CONTESTABLE ENDORSEMENT —Vice President Mikeska reported the Texas Department of Insurance has required all companies to adopt an endorsement, which negates the suicidal clauses on exchanged certificates.

SALES REPRESENTATIVES—Vice President Mikeska reported the Insurance Department's existing policy is to have Sales Representatives follow up on leads and contact members about their insurance needs. The last time the Insurance Department assigned orphan members to Sales Representatives, the Sales Representatives signed a pledge to provide service to members with the help of the State Field Manager and State Field Representatives. The Insurance Department will be following up to see if the Sales Representatives are actively contacting clients and will work with them on how to contact members. If the sales representative does not have interest in contacting members, the member will be reassigned to such sales representatives who are willing to follow through with first class service.

Vice President Mikeska will work with the directors on setting dates for the banquets for the sales representatives of the four districts that have reached their sales quota.

Vice President Mikeska reported on plans for the State Field Manager and the State Field Representatives to attend a seminar in Dallas on becoming trainers for licensing classes.

TEXAS FRATERNAL CONGRESS —Vice President Mikeska reported he is serving as chairman of the Texas Fraternal Congress Centennial Committee.

There will be a history of the Texas Fraternal Congress written by Louis Engelke.

The history will also be a positive informational book on the fraternal system.

DELINQUENCIES—Secretary Treasurer Anglin moved to accept her recommendations on the 18 loans that are over 90 days past due. Motion seconded by Director Hanus and carried unanimously. Secretary Treasurer Anglin moved seconded by Financial Secretary Mikulas to set a loss reserve of $6,000.00 for the delinquent loans.

FARM LOANS—A lengthy discussion was held concerning possible changes on farm loans over 200 acres that are not part of a homestead. More information is to be provided at the April Supreme Lodge meeting.

MAIL POLL—Secretary-Treasurer Anglin moved to ratify the mail poll to modify the interest rate of commercial loans. The vote for the modifications was twelve votes in favor of authorizing the modifications for commercial loans. The motion was seconded by Financial Secretary Mikulas and carried unanimously.

TRANSFERING OF FUNDS—Secretary-Treasurer Anglin moved and seconded by Financial Secretary Mikulas to request the consent of the Supreme Lodge for any two or more officers to have the authority to make transfers of funds in 1999 and pay all general expenses of the Society in accordance with Article 34 of the By-Laws. Motion carried unanimously.

ANNUITIES—Secretary-Treasurer Anglin moved for the interest rate credited to annuity I at 5% through April 30, 1999; seconded by Director Victorick. Motion carried unanimously.

DISASTER FUND—President Leshikar moved for establishing a disaster fund of up to $5000.00 for one year to be disbursed at the officers' discretion on the recommendation of the local directors with the funds being channeled through a local lodge. These funds could only go to an area that had been declared a disaster area by the Governor of Texas. Motion seconded by Vice-President Mikeska and carried unanimously.

UNIVERSAL LIFE—Secretary-Treasurer Anglin moved, seconded by Director Krizan to set the interest rate of the Universal Life product at 6.75% through April 30, 1999. Motion carried unanimously.

NEW BUSINESS:

SCHOLARSHIPS—President Leshikar reported 210 scholarship applications were mailed.

Secretary-Treasurer Anglin moved to set the rate of interest credited to the Annuity II and immediate annuity products at 6% through April 30, 1999. The motion was seconded by Director Broz and carried unanimously.

RESOLUTION

President Leshikar reported there were 160 attendees at the Temple Chamber of Commerce After Hours. Of these 140 were not SPJST members, but are being contacted by our sales representatives.

CONFLICT OF INTEREST —The Supreme Lodge approved the following resolution concerning conflict of interest:

STATEWIDE CHARITIES—There was a discussion about the funds collected from the sales of the tapes and compact discs. All of the funds that are received after expenses are met will be donated to the four statewide charities for 1998.

INVESTMENTS—Secretary Treasurer Anglin moved to ratify the investments from October 1, 1998 through December 31, 1998, seconded by Director Bayer, carried unanimously.

YOUTH DEPARTMENT—There have been 141 youth and 60 adults registered for the Saturday night youth lock-in. There was not a room provided for sleeping so three motel rooms would be rented for the ddvers.

Secretary-Treasurer moved, seconded by Director Klinkovsky, to set the rate of interest credited to the Roth Annuity at 6% through April 30, 1999. Motion carried unanimously.

LOCAL LODGE MAILOUTS—President Leshikar reported on mail outs for 20 local lodges.

Statement of Policy Concerning Conflict of Interest

STATE OF TEXAS COUNTY OF BELL BE IT REMEMBERED that at a regular meeting of the Board of Directors of the Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas (SPJST), held at its regular place of meeting at Temple, Texas, on the 14th day of January, 1999, at which meeting a quorum was present and voting, the following Resolution was adopted.

RESOLVED: That the Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas (SPJST), a Fraternal Life Insurance Society (1) believes that the insurance business is affected with a public interest and is dependent upon public confidence, and (2) expects employees, officers and directors to conduct their personal financial interests and affairs so as to avoid placing such interests in conflict, direct or indirect, with those of the Company and to avoid conduct which might impair their judgment with respect to the business of the Society.

The following are regarded as illustrative of the principal situations where such conflict may be involved: 1. Financial Interest Employees, officers, directors or members of their families having a material interest in any corporation or incorporated enterprise which sells goods or services to, buys from, competes with the Society in the sale of insurance, or borrows from the Company and who are in a position to influence any decision by the Society with respect to such transactions.

2. Inside Information Employees, officers, or directors directly or indirectly using or divulging inside confidential information with respect to the Society for the purpose of securing personal profit or advantage for themselves or others or in a manner prejudicial to the interest of the Society.

3. Gratuities and Entertainment The receipts of loans, gifts, gratuities, entertainment and favors of more than nominal value by employees, officers, directors or members of their families, either directly or indirectly, that may influence any decision with respect to the Society.

While the above are illustrative of ways in which conflict may arise, the entire subject is so far-reaching and the interrelationships possible within the insurance business so complex that the avoidance of conflict rest basically upon each individual's ethical standards, integrity and judgment. Annually, on or about the time of the January Board meeting, a request will be made of all directors, officers and responsible employees to state in writing any activities which conflict with the policy. The statement will be as stated on the attached Exhibit "A".

However, if any officer, director, or responsible employee at any time believes he may be engaged in activities described, he should immediately report such activities to the President.

Wecluesday, February 17, 1999—VESTNIK/7 CPA, will conduct the 1998 audit and should be completed by June 30, 1999.

INCENTIVE PROGRAM— Financial Secretary Mikulas reported six lodges have met the platinum award, seven fhe gold award, ten the silver award, six the bronze award, three the honorable mention award and fifteen the first step award.

The grand total of the monetary award amounts to $35,738.00.

ANNUITIES—Financial Secretary reported there are 1,299 certificates in Annuity I with $20,205,682.37 in the accounts. Annuity II has 1,246 certificates with a value of $25,946,090.40 and 25 Roth IRAs for a value of $229,254.77.

QUARTERLY STATEMENT— Financial Secretary received the quarterly statement ending September 30, 1998. This report has been filed with the Texas Department of Insurance.

COMPUTER COMPLIANCE—Financial Secretary Mikulas reported on the need to replace personal computers that cannot be up graded correctly to be in compliance for the year 2000. There is also a need to replace the Twinax cables with Eathernet cables so the terminals will be faster and the speed connection with file transfers will be quicker.

Recess was taken from 3:00 p.m. until 3 . 15 p.m.

Director Victorick moved, seconded by Director Klinkovsky to grant approval to go through the bid process for the purchase of the necessary personal computers and the Ethernet cables and pulling of the cable with the Supreme Lodge Officers approving the bids not to exceed $55,000.00. Motion carried unanimously.

TIME CLOCK—Financial Secretary Mikulas reported the information he had received indicated a time clock that would be connected to the AS400 model 200 would cost $20,000.00 and a time clock connected to a personal computer would cost $10,000.00 EMPLOYEE—Vice President Mikeska read a job description for the employee that will be filling a vacancy in the Insurance Department. Director Victorick moved to give the flexibility of a starting salary up to $1,300.00 a month if the applicant has the skills and qualifications with the officers having the final say in the salary the motion was seconded by Legal Advisor Kacir and carried unanimously.

DISTRICT ONE—Director Victorick presented a request from a lodge that requested to go to quarterly meetings. After deliberation, the Supreme Lodge reaffirmed its policy of not granting lodges the right to transfer from monthly to quarterly meetings.

DISTRICT TWO—Director Klinkovsky expressed his opinion that this had been a good meeting.

DISTRICT THREE—Director Krizan presented a list of old SPJST certificates that were part of an estate and the owner has them available for sale. Director Krizan requested that the Supreme Lodge set the meeting dates for the remainder of the year.

There were no conflict of interests reported by any Supreme Lodge members.

GAIN IN ASSETS—Financial Secretary Mikulas reported on the gain of assets for the past ten years. The following chart shows the gain in assets.

PAID-UP ADDITIONS—Financial Secretary Mikulas reported the paid-up additions program in 1998 permitted the purchase of $861,430.00 of permanent life insurance, which otherwise the SPJST would have forwarded $461,393.42 in cash to the certificate holders. Approximately 71% of the members take paid-up additions. The total cash remitted on premium refund checks amounted to $193,715.94 in 1998.

BUDGET—Financial Secretary Mikulas presented the proposed 1999 budget.

Financial Secretary Mikulas moved, seconded by Vice-President Mikeska to accept the 1999 budget and put it into effect. Motion carried unanimously.

PREMIUM REFUND TO MEMBERS—Financial Secretary Mikulas moved, seconded by Vice-President Mikeska, for the premium refund to members be paid at 3%. Refunds are paid by the mid-terminal reserve during the policy year just completed on all permanent plans of insurance that have reached the fifth policy year. This program does not include certificates written under the 1980 CSO mortality Table. Motion carried unanimously.

INDEPENDENT AUDIT—Financial Secretary reported Henry L. S. Jezek,

President Leshikar moved, seconded by Director Hanus to set the Supreme Lodge meetings for April 13, 14, and 15; July 13, 14, and 15; and October 12, 13, and 14. The motion carried unanimously.

Director Krizan moved to reconsider the policy of paying District Youth Counselors and Assistant District Youth Counselors 10 cents a mile for riding in a vehicle or traveling with someone who is not reimbursed by the Supreme Lodge.

The motion was seconded by Director Bayer and carried unanimously.

Director Krizan moved, seconded by Director Bayer to rescind the 10 cents a mile for District Youth Counselors and Assistant District Youth Counselors who can be paid to ride with someone else. Motion carried unanimously.

Director Krizan requested that when endowed scholarships are awarded, the families of the endowed scholarship be offered the opportunity to participate in presenting the scholarship. President Leshikar responded this had been done in the past on some cases if the endowed scholarship, which has been selected in a random selection process, is presented to someone in the area where the family lives.

Director Krizan stated that this also be done on the memorial scholarships presentations.

Director Krizan expressed his desire that more money be directed into the local lodge incentive award program to reward the more productive lodges and that an extra incentive be created that is meaningful to reward the State Field Manager and the State Field Representatives if they produce significant gain in applications and premium that will accomplish our goals. By common consent the officers are to make a recommendation for changes to the local lodge incentive awards at the next Supreme Lodge meeting.

DISTRICT FOUR—Director Broz requested that President Leshikar to research whether or not the IRS ruling has changed to allow the grandchildren of the directors receive SPJST scholarships. He also reqested a list of the fraternal acts submitted by the local lodges each month. Director Broz inquired as to what had happened to the 1997 SPJST history update of the SPJST 1980 history book.

DISTRICT FIVE—Director Hanus requested the Home Office to ask all members that belong to lodges, with building to support the efforts to have the local lodges exempt from ad valorem taxes.

DISTRICT SEVEN—Director Bayer reported both the Lodge 161, Jourdanton and Lodge 79, Corpus Christi want to start a youth program. He also reported Lodge 107, Floresville is soon to begin refurbishing their lodge hall.

DISTRICT SIX—Chairman Vanek requested the officers to come up with a figure for the approximate size of a lodge hail where only meetings will be held.

Lodge 19, Velehrad was chartered in 1897 and purchased the land from Velehrad School to build a lodge building. The Velehrad School is erecting a historical marker, which costs $950.00. The Velehrad School has raised $600.00 and would like some assistance from the SPJST Home Office. Chairman Vanek is to find the information on the marker as to whether or not it would include SPJST Lodge 19, Velehrad and then a decision would be made about the financial help.

Chairman Vanek moved, seconded by Director Krizan for the Home Office to have a staff meeting once a month and to install a suggestion box. The suggestion box is to be opened once a month and reported back at the staff meeting the answers to the questions. Motion carried unanimously.

The next meeting will begin April 13, 1999 at 8:30 a.m.

Around the State District Five planning committee presents spring meeting agenda All members of District Five lodges and their guests are invited to attend the District Five Spring Meeting set for March 7, 1999. The meeting will be hosted by Lodge 88, Houston, located at 1435 Beall Street in Houston.

A dinner and social will top the agenda from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., followed by the meeting at 1 p.m. Roast beef with all the trimmings will be served for a very good price of $4 for adult plate and $2.50 per children's plate.

We are asking all members to bring their special pastry. We also ask that the lodges and members bring items for bingo and door prizes. We will play bingo again because everyone

seemed to enjoy this activity before.

80, Holland purchases new stove and grill Lodge

Dear Members and Friends, President Harold Rohde convened the meeting at 4 p.m. on Saturday, January 2, 1999. He asked the membership to stand for the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silence for departed members.

Secretary-Treasurer Glen Latham read the minutes from the previous meeting, and they were approved as read. The committees turning in reports were doing fine. Keep up the good work!

Correspondence received included a thank you from the ARC Olympics for the donation to their organization and a Christmas card from RVOS Representative Joe Liles and his wife, Shirley.

Michael Massar was accepted as a new member. Thank you for joining our lodge.

The board of directors brought us changes in bar prices that were approved. Kitchen prices would stay the same.

The kitchen will receive a new stove and grill, and they're already in place as of this writing. Thank you to those

who helped move out the old one and move in the new one.

Door prize winners were Barbara Taisler, Estelle Coker, Joe Sumbera, Glen Latham and Tony Sladacek.

84, Dallas initiates new members February 21 Lodge

Brothers and Sisters: Some time has passed since I last wrote so, even though we are well into the new year, I wish the best for each of you.

On February 20, Jodie Mikula Orchestra will be playing ar our hall, 2625 Floyd Street, Dallas, Texas.

Admission is $6 per person and the music will be played from 8 p.m. to 12 a.m.

New Member Initiation Dinner Of course, this dance is the prelude to our initiation of new members on Sunday, February 21. The meeting will start promptly at 3 p.m. After business is completed, the new members will be introduced, and District Three Director Johnnie Krizan will guide our new members through the initiation ceremony. 84, Dallas plans anniversary, r celebration dinner Lodge

Dear Members, February 21 is initiation Sunday at Lodge 84. Our meeting starts at 3 p.m.-4:30 with a dinner of spaghetti and meat sauce, salad, garlic bread, coffee, tea, dessert. Ladies, bring desserts please. Members are all invited and it's free.

Our lodges's 89th anniversary date is April 18. Our dinner will be catered

by Bessie's catering, and our members are asked to bring a dessert to be served with the dinner consisting of roast beef, green beans, salad, potatoes, bread, coffee or tea. Adult plates are $6.50 and $4 for children 12 years and under. A happy hour will be enjoyed from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m., and dinner will be served from 12:30 to 2 p.m. The program starts at 2 p.m. The guest speaker will be District Three Director Johnnie Krizan.

Our 50-year members will be honored, as well as the Fraternalist of the Year Brother Sid Pokladnik. There will be a memorial service for the departed members. More will be written in future articles on this celebration.

Expression of Sympathy Finally, we heard this morning that Bill Lacina passed away on January 30 as a result of complications with pneumonia and was buried on February 2.

Take a Look Downtown Have you visited downtown Houston lately? Helen and King Hegwood and my husband, Calvin, and I took a ride down there last week. The changes are mind-boggling. The downtown area seems to be going to "lofts" for places to live. My, how time changes things. We drove up one street and down another with the sun-roof open, just like kids. The new stadium is coming along very fast. Drive down there and take a peek.

Ladies, beware when you go for a walk. Mildred Burke had a bad bite When a neighbor's dogs were running loose and she had to have 10 stitches on her leg plus all the suffering. She lives in Spring, Texas and is the sister of Viola Allen and Bernice Balas. Also you need to be aware when getting in and out of your car in the malls. Also while walking to your car.

133, San Antonio installs 1999 officers at January meeting Lodge

Lodge 133 held its regular meeting on Sunday, January 17th at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church Activity Center located at 1630 Goliad Road in San Antonio. There were 21 members and one guest in attendance.

Jarolyn Popp, Bill Pavliska and Margaret Schauffele were sworn in by Emil Matula as our lodge officers for

illustrious members. During her annual show at the Milan Gallery, Henrietta Milan presented the debut of her new coffee table art book, Quiet Contentment. It is a marvelous fullcolor, hand-sewn, hardback book which delightfully displays approximately 143 of Henrietta's most beautiful paintings. The book, with a wrap around cover, dances through the life and heart of a most sensitive and loving person. Published by The Milan Publishing Company of Fort Worth, Texas, it was artistically directed by Talon, Rome and Jerry Milan. It was designed by Kevin Smith of Atlanta, Georgia and written by Elaine C. Cole who is a fee-lance writer.

Images of Henrietta's wonderful paintings fill the pages of the book and are described in exquisite detail. There is an autobiographical sketch of Henrietta Milan which takes the reader into the artist's personal realm. Lodge 172, Pasadena receives property tax information from consultants On Wednesday, January 27, 1999, Lodge 172 held their first regular meeting of the new year.

The meeting was called to order by President Robert Mayfield, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silent prayer for the sick and departed.

After roll call, President Mayfield introduced our special guests to the members. Eric Gross is a Property Tax Consultant and Chris Frank is a Vice President in Sales and Marketing. Eric and Chris work for Novotny and Company which is a property valuation and tax service.

Chris told us how his company might be able to help us in getting our taxes cut on the land and building. He showed us how much we could save if the county has over-evaluated our land and building. He told us that he might be able to get some money back by filing a protest on our 1999 taxes on properties assessed,provided the property assessment is higher than the actual value. The talk was very interesting and informative.

First Vice President Lillia Mae Peter pointed out that the District Five meeting is being held at Lodge 88 and is coming up on March 7th.

President Mayfield wished everyone with a birthday in the month of February a happy birthday. He also reminded everyone that the workshop is coming up on February 27th at Lodge 177, Academy. He told anyone who is interested in going to pleas,; sign up.

Lodge 177, Academy presents donations a January meeting Our January meeting was called to order at 7:30 p.m. by President Bill Hutka. After the Pledge of Allegiance, President Hutka introduced special guests representing four notable charities who were present to accept donations from lodge. President Hutka presented donations on behalf of the lodge to the following representatives of the four charities: • $300 to Special Olympics—Check

accepted by Marjorie Boniface, Camp Funshine Director; • $300 to Ronald McDonald House— Check accepted by Susan Bolton, Executive Director; • $400 to Meals on Wheels, Temple— Check accepted by Ruth Allen, Temple Harvest House; and • $200 to LRA Improvement Association—Check accepted by Nina Bliss.

After Bill presented the checks on behalf of the lodge, each lady brieflyq explained some of the many activities performed by each organization. You could tell by the detailed and emotionfilled presentations that each lady thoroughly loves and is dedicated to her organization.

In fact, Marjorie Boniface, representing Special Olympics, brought tears to the eyes of many of our members when she shared several heartwarming stories with us about the children and young adults that she has worked with through her years of volunteer service. Marjorie told us that she is known as "Mrs. B" and has worked with Special Olympics for the last 32 years. In addition to Marjorie's presentations, Susan Bolton from the Temple Ronald McDonald House shared information with us about the Ronald McDonald House, and how it provides housing for the parents and family of children receiving medical treatment. She also distributed informative brochures. Everyone present thoroughly enjoyed having these wonderful ladies at our lodge meeting. It made the meeting very special and helped reinforce in us the true definition of "fraternalism," which is helping each other, helping the community and helping those who can truly benefit from the SPJST. Libbie Bartek reported no one was on the sick list for the month and that's always good news!

This is the highest degree awarded by the National FFA Organization. Only on in 231 FFA members have advanced through chapter and state FFA degrees to earn national degrees. Casey is also the son of Larry and Janet Bartek of Poteet and grandson of Glennie Collums of Poteet. Congratulations Miss Libbie on Casey's achievement!! And thanks to Linda Johnson of bringing the article and sharing it at the lodge meeting.

He encouraged all interested members and trustees to attend.

Fraternal Activities Coordinator Barbara Rosenkranz reminded members of several upcoming events such as the State Deer Contest, FAC and Youth Leaders' Workshops, Tarok Tournaments and the State Workshop and Banquet. She reminded everyone that February is "`heart smart" month and will provide brochures at the next month's meeting from the American Heart Association. Permission was granted to decorate the front lodge hall bulletin board with donation and contribution information. Interested members who want to help decorate, can do so on February 10th prior to the regular meeting. Twenty-seven pairs of glasses (including cases) were donated by Lodge 177 members. Thanks to Theresa Baca, Rosa Lee Weadock, Alex and Martha Garcia, Barbara Rosenkranz, Louis Driska, J.C.Johnson, Janet Lyon, Karen Bartek, Clifford Cawthon, Juanita Reyna and Ray Ybarra. A value of donated glasses will be obtained from TSO. We have a new member, Clay Martin, for Lodge 177. Welcome aboard, Clay!

Old, New Business

President Hutka said that he would like the Audit Committee to meet and combine both the 6-30-98 and 12-31-99 audit reports into one report as soon as possible.

Under new business, President Hutka distributed a sign-up sheet for volunteers to help with the State Workshop and Banquet to be held at our lodge on Saturday, February 27, 1999. We will have our regular cleaning crew on hand for assistance.

Members voted to keep the youth club meetings on the second Sunday of each month at 2 p.m.

Bill reminded members that the lodge is financially stable and we have been able to make several donations as evident at the lodge meeting by the four

In trying to fill the footsteps of Ann Mason, our former reporter, I'm sharing this story with you. Ann always closed her report wit a bit of wisdom or humor so here goes .

One of the biggest pet peeves of sales guru Zig Ziglar is that it takes hard work to get to the top. He likes to tell the story about a time he was in Washington, D. C. and visited the Washington Monument. As he approached the monument, he heard a guide loudly announce that there would be a two hour wait to take the elevator to the top of the monument. Then, with a smile on his face, the guide said, "However, there is no waiting to go to the top if you are willing to take the stairs."

Reunions St. John's School in Schulenburg Reunion A March 20, 1999 school reunion is being planned for St., John's School which was open from 1875 to 1961, All students and their spouses of this parochial and public school are invited to attend this event to be held at the St, John The Baptist Catholic Church hall (outside of Schulenburg) on road FM 957. The reunion will be from 9 a.m.

- 4 p.m. with registration being from 9 - 10 a.m.

A catered barbecue lunch will be served at noon. Registration will be $6 per person which will cover the meal and reunion costs. We have dances every Saturday night. The lodge hall is also open for rentals and parties. We especially enjoyed Carmen Babino's birthday.

The buffalo wings were a real specialty. She even brought her foster baby.

Get well cards were sent to Julia Dueser and Bill and Ella Hilcher. A thinking of you card went to Francis Simmank.

The MorrisCode band treated us to a variety of music. We especially enjoyed the polkas and waltzes. The next date for them to perform is March 20. On February 20, Texas Country will play.

Just Us will perform on February 27.

Cadillac Cowboys play March 6.

After adjournment, everyone enjoyed a lunch of Mexican enchiladas, beans; cornbread and casserole.

The desserts had a Valentine theme.

In Memoriam Expression of Sympathy We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge 88, Houston, Texas, and on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our sincere and heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed member,

FRANK "F.J." SLOVAK who was born June 23, 1921 and passed away suddenly at his home on December 13, 1998.

Mr. Slovak served in the United States Coast Guard for four years during World War II. After the war, he married Emilie Bobalik of Ennis, Texas in 1946. He was employed for 40 years by Texaco Inc. - 15 years in the Dallas office and 25 in the Houston office - taking an early retirement in 1980. Then he went to work for the Harris County Tax Assessor and Collector for eight years. Frank was a member of SPJST Lodge 88, Houston, was active in the Candlelight Plaza Citizens on Patrol and a past volunteer member at Memorial Hospital Northwest.

Mr. Slovak is survived by his wife, Emilie of 52 years; two sons, Trent Slovak and Craig Slovak and wife, Mary; granddaughters, Courtney and Chrissy Slovak; sister, Christine Zich and husband, Carl; two nephews, Milton Pokladnik, Jr. and wife, Pat, Don Mohon and wife, Susie; two nieces, Carol Everett and Shirley Zich.

Services were held December 15, 1998 at 2 p.m. in the Pat H. Foley Chapel.

Church in Abbott. He has been the owner of Ray's Electric and Plumbing since 1950. He also worked as a projectionist for the old West Best Theater.

He loved fishing, dancing and playing with his grandchildren. He was a member of KJT Number 31, SPJST Lodge 54 and the West Chamber of Commerce. He was also a lifetime member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption in West.

He was preceded in death by a son, Raymond F. Barton, Jr. who died on April 19, 1990.

He is survived by his wife, Henrietta Barton of West; two sons, Randy Barton, Craig Barton and his wife, Becky, all of West; four daughters, Joanie Barton of Los Angeles, California, Judy Overton and her husband, Tom, of Houston, Becky Cartier of Austin and Jackie Mynarcik and her husband, John, of West; one daughter in-law, Sandy Barton, of West; three sisters, Willie Mae Schuetz, Georgie Spruell and Rudy Marak, all of West; 10 grandchildren, Jason, Amy and Shelli Barton, Nathan and Matthew Overton, Whitney and Kaylie Mynar, Ashlee Mynarcik, Alex and Thomas Dean Barton and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Mynar was born June 13,1914 near Cottonwood, the son of John and Rosie Mynar. He married Agnes Snapka on November 10, 1936 in West. She preceded him in death on September 19, 1996. He was a farmer

in Hill County for most of his life. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Number 2305 and SPJST Lodge 54, both in West. He was a member of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Abbott. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and playing dominos with family and friends.

He is also preceded in death by four sisters and one brother.

He is survived by five sons, Alvin Mynar of Austin, William Mynar of Carrollton, Joe Lynn Mynar of Brazos Point, Patrick Mynar of Waco and Fred Mynar of Martindale; six daughters, Evelyn Derrick of Coppell, Martha McCaslin of Rhome, Helen Grellhesl and Cindy Grones of Waco, Virginia Mynar of Dallas and Carol Baldwin of West; two brothers, Ben Mynar of Abbott and Felix Mynar of Tours; three sisters, Hattie Kramer of San Diego, California; Mary Mikuda of Penelope, and Adele Sembera of West; 15 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Interment was at Klein Memorial Park in Pinehurst under the direction of Nobles Funeral Chapel.

Mrs. Holacka was born December 6, 1900 in Moravia, Texas. She married Frank Holacka on November 17, 1920 in Moravia and had lived in West since 1920. Mrs. Holacka was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption in West, a charter member of the Catholic Daughters of America Court 829 and was a member of SPJST Lodge 54 for over 75 years. She was a graduate of Baldwin Business College of South Texas.

He was born February 6, 1927 in Victoria to the late Ed and Theresa Marcak Wokaty. He was retired from Tennessee Gas Pipeline Company after 22 years of service. He was a former graduate of Patti Welder High School.

He was in the army during the U.S. Occupation of Japan. He was also a member of SPJST Lodge 32, Victoria.

Survivors include: wife, Katherine Whittington Wokaty of Victoria; son, David G. Wokaty of Victoria.

Mr. Wokaty was preceded in death by brother Edward Wokaty; sister Lorinne Wokaty of Victoria.

Memorial services were held Saturday, January 23, 1999 at Rosewood Funeral Chapel with Reverend Gary Sides officiating.

1999 Youth Club Officers Workshop and State Lock-In I was so excited to see many of you at the youth club officers' workshop and state lock-in held in Waco in January. Approximately 130 young people and adults attended. Two hundred young people and adults attended the lock-in. Youth leaders and parents, thank you for bringing your young people to the workshop and lock-in, and thank you for all of your help at the event.

District Youth Counselors Meet The district youth counselors and their assistants met on January 30 in Temple. Many ideas were presented.

The 1999-2000 youth club rule book updates were also discussed. Watch your Vestnik for a complete report.

Youth Leaders Workshop March 12 weekend in LaGrange SPJST youth leaders from across the state will converge on Camp Lone Star in LaGrange March 12 to 14. The event begins Friday evening with registration, games, snacks and fun at 7y.m.

Saturday is filled with workshops on topics like fund raising, party planning,

rule book updates, charity projects, games, food and more fun. Youth leaders will be honored at a special banquet on Saturday evening. If you can't get away for the entire weekend, please attend on Saturday. Breakfast and late registration on Saturday morning begins at 8 a.m. The program begins at 9 a.m. Food and accommodations are provided by SPJST. I really hope that you will be there. I so much look forward to spending time with you. This year's theme is "A Proud Past and A Bright Future."

Quarterly Reports. Due March 15 Youth Leaders, please note that the third quarter reports are due Monday, March 15. These reports cover December, January and February. It is very important to the youth program and to your youth club that these reports are submitted. Your youth club receives $1 for each youth member who attends each monthly meeting.

enjoy ice skating, plan parade appearance Dear Members, The Lodge 160 Youth Club had thrilling time on ice at their monthly meeting in January. Eighteen youth club members enjoyed an outing to the ice rink used by the San Angelo Outlaws Hockey team. This was the first time to ice skate for many of the members. For some, it was quite an experience. Even after numerous falls and crashes causing a few bruised knees, cut chins and hurt pride, it was a fun time for everyone.

Everyone then went to Youth Leader Betty Schwartz's home for a meeting and snacks. It was decided to have our first youth club float in the San Angelo Stock Show and Rodeo parade that will

Dear Members, I attended the State Youth Club Officers' Workshop and State Lock-in on January 16, 1999 in Waco, Texas along with other members of my youth club. To tell you the truth, it was a blast (even though on Sunday, I was exhausted and sore). I made some more friends and we exchanged e-mail addresses. Isn't technology great!

I just want to tell all of you who missed this exciting weekend, that you missed a lot of fun. This was the last event I attended on the state level because this is my last year as a youth club member. I regret not attending earlier, but as many of you find out, you just don't have enough time with extracurricular school activities, sports, U.I.L. events, etc.

Thank you to everyone who helped out at the workshop and lock-in, because without ya'll, it would not have been possible.

6, Cottonwood Youth Leader reports on February meeting Lodge

Dear Readers: The youth club held their monthly meeting Sunday, February 7, 1999 at 3 p.m. with 7 members present.

Nine of our youth members attended the State Lock In on January 16 at the

Family Y in Waco. All of the youth enjoyed themselves. They all went home tired as all of them stayed up all night.

The youth will be making Valentine cookies for the rest home. They will be taken to the rest home on Valentine's Day for the residents to enjoy.

The club will be having their Valentine Party Friday, February 19 beginning at 7:00 p.m. There will be food, exchange of Valentine's and games.

We look forward to everyone coming out and having a evening of fun.

The next meeting will be Sunday, March 7 at 3:00 p.m. After the meeting the youth will have a kite flying contest, weather permitting. Everyone remember to bring your kite.

Naprstek was born in 1826 in quarters known as "U Halanku" on Bethlehem Square in Prague, Czechoslovakia. At the age of 22, he arrived in America. He spread Czech nationalism in America and was the founder of a Czech library. Naprstek's desire to organize the Czech immigrants in New York City drove him to be the principal force of the "Cech Society," the first organization of Czech immigrants in America which was formed in 1850 in New York City.

Four years later, on March 4, 1854, the C.S.P.S. Fraternal Benefit Society was formed in St. Louis, Missouri.

Concho Valley Czech Heritage Society meets February 21

Sokol Karel Havlicek Borovsky Building Fund Benefit Feb. 27

The Concho Valley Czech Heritage Society of Runnels, Concho and Tom Green Counties will hold its first quarterly meeting of 1999 on Sunday, February 21st at 2:30 p.m. The meeting will be held at the SPJST Lodge 49, Rowena.

After the meeting, there will be a beginners class for the traditional Czech card game of Tarok with the Havlak group volunteering as instructors. The meeting and Tarok instruction are open to anyone interested in learning about Czech history and customs. Members and visitors are asked to bring finer-foods (chips, sandwiches and cookies) to share with the group after the meeting.

When the SPJST was organized, members bought life insurance to meet the immediate emergency needs at death. That concept, however, has expanded and changed over the years.

Today, many members look to the SPJST for a flexible line of life insurance and financial products.

Term Insurance Of the two basic types of life insurance, term insurance premiums are the lowest because term insurance offers death protection only and is in effect for a limited period. For example, a member with a ten-year term certificate has protection for that ten-year period —not beyond. If the certificate is renewable, it may be extended for another period at a premium based on the new age. If not renewable, a new certificate may be purchased at the new rate, provided the certificate holder remains insurable.

SPJST typically writes term certificates for 10-year and 20year terms on a level premium basis. Prior to age 65, you can convert an SPJST term certificate to a permanent plan of insurance with a cash value.

Who typically buys term insurance?

This varies, of course; however, likely purchasers would be young couples starting new careers. When budget constraints prohibit purchasing the desired amount of cash value insurance, term insurance is often substituted. The term insurance provides them with a high amount of protection at a low premium.

Another form of term insurance offered by the Society is the "SPJST Protector Plan" which is a joint decreasing-term certificate. The plan insures both the husband and wife in one contract and is usually tailored to mortgage cancellation. The plan pays the proceeds at the time the first insured dies.

Whole Life Insurance As its name suggests, whole life insurance furnishes protection for the "whole life" of the purchaser, regardless of the premiumpaying period. Whole life insurance is often purchased not only as premature death protection but also as a vehicle for accumulating funds for emergencies and for retirement.

An SPJST whole life certificate also has a "cash value" that can be used to take advantage of business or investment opportuni-

ties, help defray your children's college costs or help build retirement income. Likewise, it offers guaranteed protection and guaranteed growth at a guaranteed price.

Universal Life offers a level monthly premium with a levelor an increasing-death benefit option. In addition, it offers the member an interest-sensitive cash value with a guaranteed rate of interest. The rate is currently 6.75 percent. The accumulation of cash values are taxfree until distribution; likewise, death benefits are also exempt from taxation..
