Lodge 88, Houston Dedicates Annex

Last week, I had the chance to visit in Houston with Brother` rother Willie Wehring, who is Chairman of the Board of Trustees for Lodge 88, Houston. He shared with me some photographs, marking the construction and dedication of Lodge 88's new "annex," built adjacent to the existing lodge hall. The photos appear on pages 7 and 8 of this week's Vestnik.

As Brother Wehring states in his letter to the Vestnik, the entire project - from conception to completion - took only about a year. That's fast! Hats off to the members of Lodge 88, Houston for their initiative and dedication to this building project. It's a wonderful testimonial to what a group can achieve working together for a common cause.

Over the long haul, am hoping that the project will help increase the effectiveness of the Vestnik and our Society's ability to promote SPJST activities and membership in the Society throughout the various parts of the state.

"We are bound by the Bylaws to present on behalf of the Society, a vigorous public relations program to our members and other publics across the state," says Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar, in support of the initiative.

"There are a lot of emerging opportunities out there and we have good people who are willing to help the SPJST capitalize on them and I think that's great."

Depending on how much interest is generated by the Email forum, activities of the group may evolve into a regular report to the Vestnik - perhaps under the heading of the "Electronic Lodge Hall." It's an exciting new idea and one that could catch on.

"Lodge 88's new annex stands as a wonderful testimonial to what a group can achieve working together."

Exploring New Possibilities Several months ago, there appeared in this column an essay titled "The Electronic Lodge Hall" which addressed the great communication potential that the emerging computer technology of the Internet holds for organizations like the SPJST. Later, in its report to the 27th SPJST Convention in Arlington, the Publication Committee further acknowledged the great potential of this new technology stating: "Computer technology and computer relayed information (via the Internet) is transforming the way America does business. We are witnessing the birth of a technology which will be as dynamic as the introduction of the printing press, radio and television . . . The time is now for the SPJST to position itself to take advantage of this opportunity" In recent weeks, several Home Office employees have taken the initiative to organize an informal E-mail discussion group and are interested in knowing if there are other SPJST members out there with like-minded interests. Please note the announcement which appears at the bottom of this column and share it with others you believe may share an interest.

VVV Random Acts of Kindness There's a dear lady I know who was off from work on Labor Day. Apart from her household chores, she took the time to bake kolaches and bread for her neighbors. In the course of making her deliveries, she also dropped by our house.

Although her visit lasted only a few minutes, her kindness and positive outlook on life left a lingering impression ...

Random acts of kindness - when somebody does something nice for you and expects nothing in return - spark hope and cause a positive chemistry to occur. The SPJST has so many members like I just described. And every day, in countless ways, they touch the lives of those around them ...

One of the best things about the SPJST is the tremendous capacity for good that resides in each of us. By combining and channeling our best efforts, we can make a positive difference in our local lodges and communities.

SPJST is announcing a new volunteer opportunity available at SPJST local lodges across the state.

A volunteer position called the SPJST Local Lodge Czech Culture and Language Liaison is in part answer to the resurgence of interest in Czech culture.

The renewal of interest began with the announcement by Governor George W. Bush, in 1995, proclaiming the last full week of October as Czech Heritage Week.

The liaison position will offer interested SPJST members networking opportunities within the Czech community, with local teaching institutions, and possibly

the Czech Republic. Abilities or skills required for the position include a love of Czech heritage and language, initiative to get things done, meet new people, organize events and meetings, contact the media, write brief press releases, and the desire to speak publicly.

Support for the volunteer liaison is available from the SPJST Home Office and includes guidelines, resources, literature, and contacts.

History and Contribute to

The SPJST 100th Anniversary Cookbook In conjunction with its 100th Anniversary in 1997, the SPJST is publishing a cookbook with recipes to be submitted by lodge members. Supreme Lodge SecretaryTreasurer Lanita Anglin is coordinating the project.

According to Sister Anglin, member response to the cookbook project has been excellent and`the recipes are coming in from all parts of the state.

Recipes being submitted will need to be designated for one of the following categories: 1. Appetizers, Relishes and Pickles 2. Soups, Salads and Sauces 3. Meats and Main Dishes 4. Vegetables 5. Breads, Rolls and Pastries 6. Cakes, Cookies and Desserts 7. Beverages, Microwave and Misc.

Please type or print your favorite recipe on plain white paper and make sure to include the following information.

1. Your Name and Lodge 2. Name of Recipe 3. Category 4. Ingredients 5. Directions A special recipe form is also available from the SPJST Home Office or from your local lodge secretary.

"Your participation is encouraged and needed," says Sister Anglin. "The more recipes we receive, the more variety and fun you can have trying something new."

Also, in conjunction to collecting recipes for the 100th Anniversary Cookbook, the SPJST is sponsoring a contest to select a picture to go on the cover of the cookbook. Your entry will need to in some way depict your vision of SPJST celebrating its many great accomplishments during its first 100 years.

The designs will need to be submitted using the following guidelines: 1. The cover design must be 6 1/2 by 8 inches.

2. The design must in some way incorporate the wording "SPJST-100th Anniversary."

3. All entries must be received at the Home Office by October 1, 1996.

4. Entries being submitted will also need to be accompanied with a separate sheet listing the artist's name and lodge number.

5. When submitting the cover designs, please do not fold or bend them.

District Four Fall Fun Day Set for September 21

Around the Districts Look Out District Two! Fall Fun Day is Coming September 15 Fall Fun Day is fast approaching.

Mark your calendars for Sunday, September 15, 1996, at Lodge 29, Taylor.

This year's meeting is going to be packed with fun for everyone! We have a theme this year which is the Olympics. We are asking that everyone wear something red; white and blue or a combinatiOn of the colors. Of course, this is not mandatory, but the more that participate the more fun we will have.

The day will begin with registration starting at 1 p.m. The District Two Youth Club will meet at 1:30 p.m. and the adult meeting will begin at 2 p.m. We have several activities planned and those will start immediately after the short business session and last until 4:30 p.m. Door prizes, contest winners, raffle ticket winners, and the winners of the youth club's silent auction will be announced after the games just prior to the evening meal.

The entries in the kolache contest will be auctioned at this time; therefore, we are asking that each participant supply 12 kolaches for the contest. Lodge 29 has again prepared a wonderful menu of delicious items to serve our District Two members at the evening meal which will start after the games and contest announcements. The cost of the evening meal is $1 per person.

Each person registering before 2 p.m. will receive 20 free game tickets. Those who register after the meeting has been called to order will not receive free tickets but can purchase tickets at a cost of ten for $1. Additional tickets can be purchased for the same cost.

We are trying something new this year—a Pool Tournament.

So, all you pool sharks and wannapool be sharks need to come and show us your stuff.

This will he held in lieu of the horseshoe tournament.

The District Four Fall Fun Day will be held on Saturday, September 21 at Lodge 49 in Rowena., Texas.

Let's all plan on making this a real fun day. All lodge members in the district are encouraged to come to Rowena and prove that we can have fellowship, cooperation and fun in our district.

The registration will start at 10:30 a.m. and will include the registration for door prizes and contest entries. After some time to visit, a short meeting will be held,

followed by the judging of contest entries.

The youth clubs will be participating in a holiday ornament contest and will have their entries on display.

A meal will be served at 12:30 p.m. followed by various fun activities.

Hope to see a bunch of you District Four members in Rowena on September 21. We will all have a good time.

District Five Fall Meeting Set for September 22 All District Five members are invited to attend the Fall Meeting being held in Danbury, Texas, at the city park.

Registration for the horseshoe pitching, needlework, and pastry contests will begin at 11 a.m. The youth club will have the Chrstimas ornament contest.

Kolache Contest Rules 1. The SPJST Kolache Baking Contest is open to all SPJST members of nonprofessional status. Nonprofessionals are considered those who do not sell kolaches through a bakery or other establishment.

2. Kolaches must be made from scratch, using yeast dough.

3. Entries must consist of 12 averagesize kolaches of the same filling on a disposable tray or plate.

4. Kolache entries must be made by one person, no team entries.

5. All kolaches may be sold after the event and proceeds will be donated to the District Fund.

6. Winner must be present at the announcement of awards.

7. The first place winner may compete the following year. Only one entry per person per contest.

District Youth Club Silent Auction The District Youth Club will be raising funds and are accepting items with $10 value for those individuals or lodges that wish to donate. Contact Patsy Koslovsky, District Two Youth Counselor.

Volleyball Tournament Set for November 16

The SPJST State Volleyball Tournament is Saturday, November 16, 1996. The tournament begins at 9:30 a.m.

The categories are: Category A: Adult—Spiking Category B: Adult—Non-Spiking Category A: Youth—Spiking Category B: Youth—Non-Spiking The youth division will consist of members ages 14 to 17. However, young people may also play in the adult division, which will consist of members ages 14 to adult.

Lodge 4, Hallettsville Reports on Family Day Dear Members, Our lodge held its annual Family Day on Sunday, August 11, 1996, at the American Legion Hall in Hallettsville.

The activities started at 11 a.m. with a social hour. Also, the youth club had a cake walk, sold raffle tickets and displayed their crafts.

At noon, President Joe Siptak welcomed everyone and then asked for a moment of silence for our departed members. State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Frank Klinkovsky gave the meal prayer. Everyone then enjoyed a delicious catered meal of barbecue brisket, sausage, German potatoes, green beans, slaW, peaches, pickles and bread.

The ladies of the lodge furnished a large variety of desserts: A short meeting was held beginning with the pledge to the flag. President Siptak introduced our special guests as State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Frank Klinkovsky and his Wife Irma, District Six Field Representative Jim Wiest and Wife Susie, and our SPJST Scholarship winner Doris Matula. He also recognized the lodge officers and committees.

The highlight of the afternoon was the presentation of the 50-year pins to our deserving members who also received a long-stemmed red carnation from the lodge. Members present to receive their pins were Viola T. Holly, Leona Mae Miculka, Estella E. Means, Margaret A. Smotek, Annie Mae Technik, Edward Vernon Woytek, and Victoria Zak. Lodge 4 President Joe Siptak congratulates Doris Matula for being selected as a 1996 SPJST Schoiarship recipient. Sister Matula, who is attending Texas A&[': University, is the daughter of Henry atYd iblarlyn Matula and the gran6daughter of liar., and Mary \iatula.

Unable to attend were Dorothy Bedford, Paul C. Boethel, James Francis Bucek, Rose Marie Hutzler, August Lubojacky, Eugene Louis Spaniel, and Mildred Webb. Congratulations to these members on achieving this honor.

Our 1995 Fraternalist of the Year Selma Groves was present. President Siptak told the members that our lodge had a member, Agnes Mikush, who was 96 years young and outlived her SPJST policy. She was honored in May. A history of our lodge was read and a framed picture of Karl Havlicek Borovsky drawn

by Brother Walter Kosek was on display.

Youth Leader Annie Vahalik thanked everyone for supporting the youth club and their projects. She encouraged the members to view the crafts on display from the District and State YAD. Also, their scrapbook received second place at District and their poster won first place at District and will go on to he judged at the Texas Fraternal Congress in October.

Elizabeth Wagner participated in the Queen's contest. She gave her speech which was well received. Nicholas Vahalik performed his second place district talent which was entertaining.

Elizabeth Wagner was recognized for having perfect attendance at the youth club meetings for 1995-96. Jeremy Kalmus was congratulated on receiving a $500 District Six Youth Scholarship at the State YAD. The youth club then announced their raffle prize winners as Joshua Siptak, Susan Siptak, Viola Holly, Margaret Smotek, Vicky Zak, Susie Wiest, Toni Appelt, Lillie Woytek, Jim Wiest, Shirley Bonewald, and Bradley Bonewald.

63, Sweet Home to Meet September 15 Lodge

Lodge 63, Sweet Home will hold its monthly meeting and quarterly social on September 15, 1996, at the Sweet Home Community Center. We will begin with a social hour at 12 noon, followed by a hamburger lunch and a short business meeting. Members are asked to bring a dessert for the meal. Everything else will be furnished by the lodge.

Door prizes will be given and someone with a birthday in July, August or September will win a birthday cake baked by Ann Moseley. We will also he honoring our new members so come out and meet some of the people that have helped earn the Incentive Awards.

81, Needville Reports on August Meeting

Lodge

First of all, I want to apologize for my article not being in the Vestnik at the proper time. Due to the postal system, it takes approximately a week and a half to get from Needville to Temple. With all of our modern equipment, we are still in the pony express days. Sorry for the lateness, but I try hard every month to get it in on time.

Let's start with our last meeting which was held on Sunday, August 18, 1996, at our lodge hall. There were 33 members and guests present. At 12 noon, Mary Werner and her kitchen crew signaled it was chow time. President Macha led us in grace before the meal. Barbecue beef along with a great assortment of vegetables, salads, and desserts were served.

President Macha and wife Delores donated the meat which was prepared by the KCs for the annual fire department celebration. Thanks to the ladies for always bringing all of those good side dishes and desserts.

At 1 p.m., President Macha called the meeting to order. Sister Willie Mae Kuykendall led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. The roll call for the officers indicated that Vice President Vincent Newman and Special Fund Chairman Gilbert Walzel were absent.

Mary Werner, our secretary, read the minutes for the July meeting. They were approved as read. Our treasurer Willie Mae Kuykendall presented her report which was accepted as read. In the absence of Gilbert Walzel, our Special Fund Chairman, Willie Mae Kuykendall read his abbreviated report which was accepted as presented. The Machas received a round of applause from the audience for donating the meat for the meal. President Macha and I were happy to do this for this wonderful group. Not only did we have a good meal, hut we were supporting our local volunteer fire department.

In memory of our departed brother, Edward Dedek of Richmond, a moment of silence was observed. Our prayers go out to the bereaved family.

LaVerne Davis, Jerry Blinka, Vic Werner, Emil Pollock, Alvina Gajevsky, Leona Mohler, Annie Horelica, Mildred Vecera, and Bradley Vallet are on our sick list. Bradley is the son of Gilbert and Benita Walzel. Bradley had the misfortune of being thrown from his horse while trying to rope a calf. Another calf ran under Bradley's horse which caused the accident. At this time, Bradley is still in a coma. He was life-flighted to Herman Hospital but has nowbeen transferred to Diagnostic Hospital where he will receive full-time therapy. Our prayers are with each of you and especially Bradley. May God bless all of you.

Mrs. Anna Tielke, wife of Bernie Tielke, had gall bladder surgery last month. Mrs. Tielke was present at our meeting. She is looking great and she said she is feeling good. That's wonderful.

President Macha reported that the benefit held for the Dale Anderson Family was a great success. The auction alone took in over $17,000. This is so nice.

Thanks to all who supported this worthwhile cause.

Louis Hanus, our District Five Director, was present at our meeting. He reported on some of the happenings going on in Temple. Louis talked about the Czech Community Culture Center.

Lodge 84, Dallas Members Enjoy Picnic at Cedar Creek Lake We extend sincere thanks to Brother Sid and Sister Justine Pokladnik and family for hosting a Lodge 84 Picnic at their beautifal Cedar Creek lake home and grounds on August 11. They served a delicious barbecue dinner with all the trimmings and all drinks. Nice weather made for a very pleasant afternoon.

Cotton picking in this area has come to a halt. It has been raining throughout this area everyday for the last two and one-half weeks. The rain is great for the pastures, but the farmers do not need rain now. Water is standing in the fields. The top part of the cotton stalk is blooming and at the bottom of the stalk, the cotton is beginning to fall out of the halls. With the storms developing one after another, things do not look too bright for the farmers. Hopefully, the Lord will send some dry weather so the crops can he gathered.

Sunday, September 15, 1996, is our next meeting date. On the menu will be baked and fried chicken. Ladies, please bring a vegetable or salad and dessert. In the last couple of meetings, we have missed a lot of the familiar faces that were coming to the meetings. We hope all of you can start coming again because we really miss you. We hope that something someone may have said has not offended you. If so, forget it. Come back and bring some friends along with you.

We have a good relationship in our organization and let's keep it that way. Like they say—the more, the merrier.

Bossier City Trip Set for September 18 The trip to Bossier City will be Wednesday, September 18. The bus will leave from 2625 Floyd Street at 6:30 a.m. and will leave Bossier City at 6:30 p.m.

The bus will arrive hack at the lodge at approximately 10 p.m. Cost is $25 per person and will have the usual amenities.

87, Temple Reports on August Meeting

According to Brother Wehring, who oversaw construction of the project, the first cement truck arrived on May 15 at 7 a.m. As you can see in this photo taken at 12:30 p.m. on May 19, it didn't take long after for the building to really take shape.

Just an hour later, at 1:30 p.m., work crews began attaching the "skin" to the building which is located adjacent to the existing lodge hall.

Just sixty minutes later, at 2:30 p.m., workmen have completed putting up the sides and are busily applying the roof covering.

Lodge 88, Houston

Dedicates Annex on August 12 In August, 1995, the members of Lodge 88, Houston had an idea to build another building for multiple use. In September, October and November, ideas and suggestions were gathered, plans were drawn and prices were obtained. In December, 1995, the contract was signed to get started. January, 1996 through March, 1996, was spent correcting city records, and getting plans approved. On March 3, all plans were approved and the work was started. Finally, almost one year later, an idea is now a reality.

Lodge 88, Houston Dedicates New Annex Building August 12, 1996

133, San Antonio Reports on August Meeting Lodge

Lodge 133 held its regular meeting on Sunday, August 18 at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, located at 1630 Goliad Road in San Antonio.

A 100th Anniversary Cookbook is being organized by the Supreme Lodge.

Members wishing to include their favorite recipe should send their recipe to Margaret Schauffele at 8108 Forest Dawn in Live Oak, Texas 78233 or bring it to our meeting on Sunday, September 15.

Recipes must be sent in before October 1.

Members who are ill include Viola Spacek, August Blanar and Kathy Murky. Our thoughts and prayers are with them.

172, Pasadena Reports on August Meeting

The regular meeting of Lodge 172, Pasadena was called to order by our President Bobbye Johnson at 7:30 p.m.

The Pledge of Allegiance was lead by Emilie Sefcik, our Second Vice President, and everyone remained standing for a moment of silence for our deceased members.

The roll of officers and board members was called by Secretary Jo Mayfield.

Everyone was present except for Raymond Holub, Tennie Walla, Mary Zucha, Helen Schewe, Norman Tafte, and Lillie Mae Peters.

Jo Mayfield, our secretary, had received some correspondence on our 100 Anniversary Cookbook. Anyone wanting to put some recipes into this cookbook needs to get the forms from Jo Mayfield to fill out and have them mailed to the Supreme Lodge in Temple, no later than October 1, 1996.

Robert Mayfield, our First Vice President, received some correspondence on the State Volleyball Tournament which will be held November 16, 1996, at the City Recreation Center in Temple and also on each lodge getting prepared to nominate their fraternalist of the year.

The forms with the names should be in the Home Office by November 1, 1996.

The minutes from the previous meetings were read, corrected and approved.

All officers' reports were given and all correspondence was read.

The District Five Meeting and Fun Day will be held on September 22, 1996, at the Danbury City Park. A covered dish and dessert should be brought by each family.

September 4 will be the final meeting for our Czech Festival which will be October 20, 1996. September 23 will be an arts and crafts day at 10 a.m. at our Lodge 172, Pasadena for anyone wishing to make any arts and crafts for our Czech Festival.

172, Pasadena Extends Fraternal Support to Regional Centers Lodge

The Bridge, a shelter for abused women and children in Pasadena, notified Lodge 172 that they were completely out of paper products and diapers.

Lodge 172 has always assisted the Bridge over troubled waters with food and clothing. The membership answered with a Christmas in July Benefit.

Please note that Lodge 172, Pasadena will once again be sponsoring Czech classes at the lodge hall located at 3609 Preston in Pasadena.

In Abbott, Texas, we drove to Willie Nelson's home and viewed it from the van. We got back to the lodge around 5:30 p.m. and hope we can do something similar soon.

Wow, what a wonderful time Lodge 183, Arlington had going to the SPJST Temple Museum.

The lodge rented a van and 16 members enjoyed the day. On the way there, we stopped at West, Texas, to enjoy some kolaches and beverages. A couple of the ladies window-shopped the antique stores. What fun it was to see a semitruck hauling only a toy truck strapped down on the tlat bed.

We arrived in Temple and toured the Museum. Folks, if you have not been

Czech Heritage Society to Publish Historical Text The Czech Heritage Society of Texas announces a soon-to-be released publication entitled Emigration to Texas from the Mistek District between 1856 and 1900

by Drahomir Strnadel. The book contains nearly 3,000 names of Czech. emigration from northeastern Moravia in the Czech Republic along with historical data describing economic conditions and procedures needed to petition permission to leave their homeland for Texas.

Hundreds of families in Texas will find this book most helpful toward locating their ancestors from that region as an estimated 80 percent of the Czechs can trace their roots from there. A total of 57 villages are listed.

Inspired by the late Albert J. Blaha, Sr., founder of the Czech Heritage Society of Texas, Drahomir Strnadel of Trojanice secretly obtained this valuable research information from the archives over a ten-year period in order to help the Texas Czechs in their quest toward tracing their ancestral roots.

Originally published in Czech in three separate volumes, Mr. Strnadel presented this valuable information to the Czech Heritage Society of Texas in October, 1989. The Victoria Chapter, one of 14 in the state, agreed to prepare it for publica-

tion and distribution. The three books were combined into one volume. The history section was translated into English. Every effort was made to keep the text in its original form for the sake of authenticity. It was put together by Marjorie Matula of Victoria, Chairman of the CHS Board of Trustees, who has had over 20 years of experience in doing family history research. This is her fourth publication to complete.

Emigration to Texas from the Mistek District contains 207 pages, 8 1/2-by-11.

The book is hard-bound in a deep green cover. It also contains 92 pages of history which includes 20 pages of original documents from the archives, six maps from the 18th, 19th, and 20th century (one of the maps is in color) and ten illustrations

by Pavel Strnadel. Book Two is indexed.

Book Three is listed alphabetically and the last section contains copies of the Arnost (Ernst) Bergmann letter written in 1890 and the Vincenc (Vincent) Silar letter written in 1852. Both of these letters were sent from Texas back to the homeland which resulted in more emigration to Texas. Mr. Strnadel located letters in the archives that were sent from Texas giving a valuable insight of conditions in Texas.

The significance of this publication cannot by overemphasized. One like it has never been made available containing the history and names of so many emigrating from a particular area in Moravia.

A Texas native, Dalhart Windberg began to attract national attention in the 1960s. He has executed trompe l'oeil still lifes and figurative oil paintings depicting life in Mexico, Spain and Greece; but is his American landscape works which have most captured the imagination of collectors. These paintings have a universal appeal in that they evoke feelings of peace and a vision of natural harmony in the midst of our

modern chaotic world. Windberg is a romantic realist whose works embody a strenuous, lifelong devotion to his art.

He has had numerous one-man shows and his paintings are in many corporate and private collections. Two biographies have been written about the artist—the most recent, Dalhart Windberg - Artist of Texas, was published by the University of Texas Press in 1984. Its title was bestowed on the artist by the state legislature in 1979. He has also written a book describing his "smooth surface" technique of oil painting.

Over half a million reproductions of Windberg's paintings have been collected in the U.S. and Canada, attesting to the popularity of his work. In addition to his painting career, Windberg continues to teach workshops across the country and develop new materials for artist.

Wednesday, September 11, 1996—VESTNIK/11 Champion, a State Champion, and a Professional Champion! The Kolache Bake-Off competition features celebrity judges from far and wide casting their votes for the absolutely best kolache. In addition, a Kolache Eating Contest commands equal competition for state-wide championship.

The Kolache Festival is scheduled for Saturday, September 14. The one day event begins at 9 a.m. and ends as dark falls across the little Central Texas town.

The Festival covers the Courthouse Square in Downtown Caldwell and spills over into the adjoining streets and businesses for four blocks. Every building and business in downtown Caldwell participates in the activities.

The day-long Kolache Festival will feature entertainment, 206 Czech dancers, musicians and singers, museums, quilt show, antique automobile show with a vast display of classic Model-T motorcars, and a fine arts exhibition and sale featuring Dalhart Windberg, the famous Texas artist.

Demonstrations of canning, weaving, wine making and lace tatting by artisans and craftsmen will continue during the day. Three hundred juried arts and crafts vendors will be scattered throughout the festival. Antique Row, a section of antique vendors, will dot the lawns of Caldwell's historical homes offering great finds for the collector.

Please check your rule book for the contest rules. First place ornaments will be displayed on the Home Office Christmas tree. Each person attending is reminded to register before 2 p.m. to receive your game tickets.

We will have a short District youth meeting at 1:30 in the Taylor youth room.

Plans will be made for our annual District Two lock-in. Please attend, we need your input. The adult meeting will be held at 2 p.m.

The District Youth Club will once again have a . silent auction with the proceeds to help defray the cost of our lockin. Each youth club is asked to donate an item of $10 or more value for the auction.

Any donations will be much appreciated.

At the close of the silent auction, the top two to three items will be continued in a live auction. This should be a lot of fun and give everyone a last chance to bid on the'most popular items.

We are looking forward to a great day with lots of fun, games, drinks and food.

Four Youth Counselor Reports on Camp District

Dear Readers, District Four Camp started off with a 10 a.m. departure from Wall on July 19.

After stopping at the Llano Park for a sack lunch, we continued on our six-hour trip to Camp Lone Star. Although it's a long drive, it is always well worth it.

After unloading our tons of luggage and "camp supplies," we met at the Celebration House to get our name tags, camp schedules, and rules for camp.

Everyone had to come up with a name of an animal that had the same letter as the first letter of their name to go on the name tag. We had names such as Nancy Nanny Goat, Krystle Kitten, and Cara Cat among our group. A child that was with another group at Camp Lone Star thought these were our real names and kept calling me Mrs. Skunk!

Friday evening started with our annual volleyball tournament and a session of singing some "silly songs" with Mike.

This was followed with the initiation ceremony for our "first time campers"— Jana Wilde, Sally Dierschke, Amy

Henderson, Shelley Wilde, and Jill Miller.

Sally was not very fond of the chocolate pudding eating initiation!

With the 100-degree temperatures at Camp Lone Star came time to go swimming. After swimming, a camp fire ceremony was held. The LITs Jennifer Block, Jessica Bubenik, Kristi Braden, Ryan Jansa, James Lehr, Clay Jansa, Ryan Holik, and Wade Martin recited a reading about friendship which spelled out the word "Friend." Chase Dierschke added ashes from the 1995 campfire to our new campfire to demonstrate mixing old friends from last year with new friends this year. Following the ceremony, everyone enjoyed a huge serving of nachos. The younger campers then retired to their cabins to rest up for the next day. The older campers had a lot of energy left to participate in a 1996 SPJST Camp Olympics. The contests of leapfrog race, wheelbarrow race, javelin (paper cup) throw, locked arms race, etc. had the boys against the girls. After each event, the winning team would receive its candy "gold medal" prize. About 1 a.m., everyone was pretty exhausted and headed to the cabins.

Flag raising ceremonies started each day for us followed by a little hike to breakfast. After breakfast, the groups of campers' alternated crafts and games.

Each camper made a cute Uncle Sammy out of a big blue hell to take home with them. A game of Jatse Mash started the games. Other games such as alphabet volleyball, anatomy shuffle, hula hoop relay, SPJST downs, and many others were enjoyed by all. The final game was bucket brigade and it involved two buckets of water. Some of the older campers put a new ending to the game by dumping the buckets of water on the leaders.

But with the 100-pluS temperatures, it really felt good!

The afternoon sessions consisted of canoeing and challenge course. The younger campers were able to overcome their fear of riding in the canoes while the older campers tried to just stay in their canoes when someone attempted to turn it over. On the challenge course, the campers had many mental and physical challenges given to them to try to accomplish. Most were done with the exception of trying to put 16 teenagers on a 3-foot by 3-foot board all at the same time for ten seconds. It was finally a consensus that it was impossible!

Following our evening meal on this day, all of the campers were given a filled .water pin. This big water fight seemed to be one of the highlights of camp. Of course, the teenage boys used their ingenuity to find a big rubber tub to fill and use as their ammunition. The leaders and some of the campers got really drenched.

Austin Miller looked like he had just crawled out of the swimming pool!

Saturday night is always party time at camp and this year was no exception.

The LITs from District Four and District Seven decorated and planned a Hawaiian Party while all of the campers dressed in their finest Hawaiian attire. A joint party of the campers from the two districts consisted of a Hawaiian costume parade; limbo, conga, indoor beach volleyball, and a special presentation by James Lehr singing "Tiny Bubbles" with his bubble dancers Jessica Bubenik, Jennifer Block, and Kristi Braden. My thanks go out to all of the LITs from the two districts for doing such a wonderful job on the party.

The night:42s- concluded with a dance on the basketball court.

Sunday was our last day at camp.

After flag ceremony and breakfast, archery was taught by the camp personnel to the younger campers. The older campers enjoyed archery, blow gun, and cross how shooting. Our last activity was a hike through the woods and up to devotional hill. The teenagers seemed to be so thrilled to get to go on the hike! Before packing our bags and cleaning the cabins, a little ceremony was held for all of the "last time" campers. This was the last camp for Ryan Jansa, Becky Schwertner, James Lehr, and Kristi Behrens. Gifts were presented to them and acknowledgments that we will definitely miss them all next year.

Our camp time did not end at Camp Lone Star. On Sunday afternoon, we traveled to San Marcos and enjoyed touring Wonder World as a group. The cave was really something to see as was the gravity house. Feeding the little goats and deer in the animal park was a lot of fun, especially when the little goat just crawled up on the bus with us. The evening was then spent swimming in the pool and enjoying lots of pizza at the motel.

Monday morning saw everyone up early and ready to go to Schlitterbaun.

We were the first ones in line for our tickets and picnic table. Everyone spent the entire day riding all of the fun rides, stopping by our picnic table for food and drinks, and managing to get sunburned, too. After being one of the last ones out of the water park, we dined at McDonald's and Wendy's before heading back to the motel.

The next morning was spent driving back home with lots of memories of another fun camp. I would like to thank everyone who helped transport campers to and from camp. I would especially like to thank the leaders who assisted me at camp. Betty Schwartz, Nancy Schwertner, Jill Miller, and Robyn Jansa were all such a tremendous help with everything at camp. I could not ask for a better group!

My greatest thanks go to the campers from District Four! All of you were SUPER! You were all so cooperative in all of the activities even if it was something that wasn't too appealing, such as the hike. Thank you also for the beautiful kitchen decoration that you presented to me at camp. Every time I walk into my kitchen now I think of all of you and the

fun time we had.

The final thanks go to the SPJST organization for providing the funds for these children to be able to participate in a camping experience. These are experiences that some children would never have the chance to have if it was not for SPJST. Seven Youth Counselor Presents YAD Results

District

The 1996 District Seven Youth Achievement Day was held Sunday, June 23, 1996. Hill Country Lodge 185 hosted the event at the Bavarian Village in New Braunfels. Registration began at noon, followed by the royalty and talent competitions.

The 1996 District Seven Royalty are King Stacey Branham and Queen Andrea Mills, both from Lodge 185. Duke Patrick Mills and Duchess Lauren Dunham are also from Lodge 185.

Parents of the king are Glenn and Susan Bohnenberger of Seguin, and Kim and Lisa Branham of San AngelO. Parents of the queen and duke are Kathleen Mills and Douglas and Diana Mills of New Braunfels. Carrie Dunham of New Braunfels is the mother of the duchess.

The following are VIPs without whom the YAD would not have been possible: Mr. Bob Bayer, District Seven Director, Master of Ceremonies; Dorothy Pape, Jarolyn Popp, and Kathleen Mills, who registered the entries; Roy Haag, our sound system operator; Glenn Pruski, timekeeper, and Polly Bayer, Diana Koehler and Betty Doeppenschmidt, who tabulated the judges' scoring sheets.

Five Getting Ready for Fall Family Day District

Dear Members, Here we go again in District Five.

Everyone is working hard and getting everything ready for the District Five Fall Family Day. It is going to he fun and hopefully, full of surprises. Where is it going to be? Why, Danbury Lodge 139 is hosting this fun-filled day. There is going to be the horseshoes, volleyball, needlework, kolache, and youth Christmas ornament contests. The youth ornament contest will include all four age groups: ages 6 to 8, ages 9 to 11, ages 12 to 14, and ages 15 to 17. All youth need to check their Vestnik and youth leaders to get further details.

Come one, come all and let us really make our hosting Lodge 139 know that we really do appreciate all the hard work they did to make this a fun-filled day for everyone. The youth leaders of the various lodges will have booths to help them make some money for their own youth clubs.

The District Youth Club will have an old-timey watermelon seed-spitting contest. The overall winner will receive a large trophy; others will receive ribbons.

Is there a catch to this? Why of course!

The watermelon will sell for $1.50 because we are trying to raise funds to give to H.E. Butt Foundation to help build a new cabin at Linnets Wing where the girls stay because it is really crowded at camp. We want to show the Foundation that SPJST is really a fraternal and giving society. H.E. Butt Camp has been very gracious to us campers in District Five. They depend on donations to build at the camp sites. The youth love camping there. It is so beautiful.

Hopefully, other lodges will come through, also. Even if you do not have a youth club or group that go to camp think of this as being another boost and investment to the future leaders of our society.

Let's get behind the slow and push forward. As we go into the next "one hundred years," we are truly building a better bridge and opening up other doors to our young people as well as the young adults who we truly need to get back to their mother lodges.

So come out and support us in District Five and bring an open heart and open up your purse. We have had one lodge give to our District Fund Raiser for this new camp building. To Joni Lange, Howard Leshikar, and the Benders: I would like to thank Joni Lange and Howard , Leshikar for all that they did at West Fest. I really enjoyed riding in the carriage and also dancing the HokeyPokey. But' of all the things that happened at West Fest, the most exciting moment was when the carriage took off with us in it. Everyone was helping to pull the horses back. It was nice seeing Karen, Krystle, and the Bender family again. See you at the Texas Fraternal Congress in October.

4, Hallettsville Youth Club Reports on Family Day

Dear Vestnik Readers, On August 11, 1996, our lodge held its annual Family Day. Our youth club had several different fund raising activities during the day. We started with a raffle booth, a cake walk, and silent auction.

We ended the day with bingo. Many thanks goes out to the youth club members and adult lodge members that contributed items to the cake walk, bingo, and raffle booth. Also, thanks to Trevor Scott who contributed a crocheted doll for the silent auction!

Hailey Renee Slenk is six years old. She is the daughter of John and Angie Slenk. Hailey loves horses and riding them. She also enjoys roller skating and playing with her two cats and one dog.

She likes school and spending time with her dad attending to cattle. Hailey has two sisters, Heather and Holly. She is a first grader at Snook Elementary School.

Lodge 4, Hallettsville Youth Club Reports on Youth Workshop Dear Readers, I went to the Youth Club Officer's Workshop on Saturday, August 24. The Bell County 4-H Ambassadors presented the games and taught us about parliamentary procedure.

Afterwards, we went to Summer Fun USA waterpark until the thunderstorms came through. It was fun. Thank you, State Youth Director Joni Lange, for putting on a fun day.

9, Snook Youth Club Reports on August Meeting Lodge

Dear Vestnik Readers, On September 4, Lodge 9 in Snook, Texas, had their September youth club meeting. We had one visitor, Casey Kovar.

Thanks to the Slenks for bringing the craft and to my brother and I for bringing door prizes. Thanks, Marie Schoenemann, for speaking to us about the Burleson County Fair and to Ruth Kovar, our honorary grandmother, for bringing sodas.

Our charities were . to send cards to the elderly people in the community, bring canned goods for the Brazos Food Pantry, bring a $1 donation for the Jerry Lewis telethon, clean up the country store, and bring cookies to the First Bank of Snook's grand opening. We recycled small boxes, used books, and decorating magazines for the Snook High School home making classes.

After our meeting, we cleaned up around the barbecue pits from the Snook Volunteer Fireman's Barbecue.

24, Cyclone Youth Club Invites You to Fall Karaoke Lodge

It's back-to-school and football time.

Come celebrate the fall season on Saturday, September 14 at Flag Hall. We invite everyone to join us at the Fall Karaoke and Dance from 8 p.m. to 12 a.m. Admission is $4 per person, with

admission $1 for children ages 5 and under. Food and soft drinks will be avail able throughout the evening. We will see you at Flag Hall for an evening of music, fun and friends.

30, Taiton Youth Club Reports on Summer Outing Lodge

The Taiton SPJST Youth Club Lodge 30 had their meeting on August 10, 1996, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Staff in Nada, Texas. The meeting was called to order by President Sarah Dluhos. Jon Marcaurele led the club in the motto and pledge. Jeanine Dorotik read the roll call and read the last meeting's report.

We are welcoming three new members. They are Danille Zalman, Amber Schoelman, and Paul Schoelman.

Youth Leader Lisa Bubela gave a report of old business. Congratulations went out to all of the members who went and performed or entered items in the State YAD. We came home with a lot of winners.

The District Six tour was a great success and everyone had a great time at Sea World of Texas.

The club members sold Stanley products for a fund raiser and they did very well. Thanks to all the youth who participated.

Under new business, the youth leader told of the SPJST Youth Club Officer's Workshop that will be held on August 24, 1996, at the Bell County Expo Center in Belton.

All of the youth club members signed a thank-you card for Mr. and Mrs. Fritz Schoelman for a donation they gave to the youth club. The club sang "Happy Birthday" to Kirby Bubela and Danille Zalman for their August birthdays.

The contest was a back-to-school picture and they were very good. For the charity, the members donated a school supply they will be taking to St. Mary's Catholic School in Nada and also to the schools in the El Campo area.

Our next youth club meeting will be September 8, 1996, on Grandparent's Day. We will encourage all of the youth to bring their grandparents to the meeting for a special token.

The members were accompanied by leaders and parents who provided transportation for the youth. Everyone enjoyed the rides, waterpark, and musical shows in the park.

Czech

Language Instruction

Czech Language at Tarrant County Junior College Once again, this fall the Czech language beginner's course is being offered at Tarrant County Junior College at the Northwest Campus. It is located at 4801 Marines Creek Parkway in Fort Worth, Texas 76170. Classes begin on Thursday, September 10 from 7 to 9:30 p.m. and ending October 16.

There is also a Senior Aid Program with Czech classes beginning September 12 and ending November 14. These are beginner's classes. These Senior Aid classes are Tuesdays from noon to 12:50 p.m.

Study the Czech Language by Correspondence Course The School of Independent Learning at the University of Texas presently offers two courses in the Czech language.

Czech 506 and Czech 507 are designed to help beginners develop proficiency in understanding, reading, writing and speaking Czech. By using the texts, study guide, and cassette tapes, students are able to study at home according to their own schedules. Upon completion of each course, the student earns five hours of college credit. Both courses have recently been redesigned by Dr. Kevin Hannan.

VVV Alvin Community College to Offer Conversational Czech Intermediate Conversational Czech will be offered by the Continuing Education Department of Alvin Community College on Tuesday nights from 7 to 9 pm. from September 17 to November 19. The class will meet at Pearland High School at 3775 South Main in Pearland.

Students of Czech descent as well as any interested persons are welcome to register for this non-credit course.

Conversational Czech has been taught at ACC since 1973. Czech language instruction fosters awareness and understanding of cultural pluralism in Texas.

To further this understanding, the class will learn Czech geography, culture, arts and food. The history and contributions of Czechs in Texas will also be presented.

The instructor for Conversational Czech will be Bernard Pivonka, who has a degree in history and Czech from the University of Texas in Austin.

There is no tuition for this course. It is If your school, university or lodge plans to have a Czech language class this fall and you are interested in a grant from the SPJST, please contact the SPJST Home Office and request a form for Czech language allocations.

Assistance available annually is: Universities-$1,000 Colleges $800 High Schools-$600 Local Lodges-$200 per each 15-hour class and not to exceed $400 annually

Lodge 88, Houston Czech Class Begins September 16 To All Past, Present, and Prospective Interested Czech Language Students, We are pleased to announce that noted Czech Language Instructor William E. (Bill) Souchek will be teaching his thirtyfourth class or instruction course of the Czech language.

Classes resume at the SPJST Lodge 88 at 1435 Beall Street in Houston, Texas, on Monday, September 16 and every Monday thereafter (except every second Monday - lodge meeting night), for another ten class presentations, ending with the final class on Monday, December 2. As usual, classes start promptly at 7:30 p.m. and continue to 9:30 p.m. with a refreshment break around 8:30 p.m.

Emphasis is on vocabulary, pronunciation, and beginning conversation. No prerequisite is required. Class meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at Reagan High School. Class begins September 3 and continues for seven weeks for 21 hours.

Conversation Czech II CSC-3-763-040 is a continuation of Czech I designed for students who .have some knowledge of Czech or completed Czech I. Emphasis is on improving vocabulary, basic sentence structure, and speaking skills. Class meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Class begins in October .
