District IV Held Seminars In Seymour And Rowena The fall sessions of the SPJST Sales Representatives' Continuing Education seminars were held recently in Seymour and Rowena.

SFM Gene McBride, with the assistance of District I Director Stanley Broz, conducted the seminars designed to promote advanced insight into the modern types of insurance and how they meet SPJST members' needs more fully.

Continuing Education for fraternal organizations is not required by the Texas State Board of Insurance, but to better serve the membership, the SPJST requires its agents to take six hours of classroom education per year to remain in active status.

It's You...

If you want to live in the kind of town; Like the kind of a town you like.

You needn't slip your clothes in a grip; And start on a long, long hike.

You'll only find what you've left behind.

Real towns are not made by men afraid; Lest somebody else gets ahead.

Anonymous *** When we speak of the wealth of a small town, we mean that a small town is where everybody knows your business and yet they will make it their business if anyone in the community needs help. It is where the folks will talk about you and then talk for you when the chips are down. It is where there has to be a fire to get anyone on the streets after 9 o'clock and yet there will be dancing until midnight and not dependent on hot music and cold drinks to keep up the friendly spirits.

In a small town there is a common bond during a disaster and a common thankfulness for rain, or a beautiful day, or a new fire hydrant. There is little thought paid to social position, and the judging of a man is done on his own values---the deep values.

It is where a person speaks to his friend as many times as he sees him during the day, not worrying over the social graces as to whether they have already greeted each other previously.

It is where a neighbor's hurt becomes your hurt.

The freedom and dignity of the individual is practiced in a small town without a lot of paid coaching by experts who think they know the minds of men. A man expects to earn what he gets and get what he earns.

The building of a park or the paving of a street becomes a personal thing in which the majority of folks see a tangible part of themselves. The yardstick is not set off in degrees that ask "What is there in it for me?"

A stranger becomes the focus of honest curiosity and the returning native always seems to have added a little glamor. The deeds of the town and its men often shine brighter in a far away place. The words of a stranger often seem like important words.

A small town is where the lack of convention allows for more time to live well and think clearly. The veneer of fatuous arguments is a thin shell which comes closer to allowing the reality of things to show through. The problems of the people are concerned with nature and close association with others---with things as they are.

This, in part, is a small town and the

people who live in it. It is closer to the concepts of freedom, individual initiative, and self-realization than any other segment of the land except the remote rural. It is the balance wheel in our social order. May there be enough vision to see that the wealth of our small towns is far greater than that which could be measured by smoking stacks and production lines.

Most of you are fathers and maybe you have a small son or can remember back when your son was about three years old. He would say to you after your day's work was done and you had had your supper, "Daddy, let's take a walk." You say, "O.K., Son." And you start out, you on one side of the road and your little man on the other. Yes, he is your little man now and in his opinion very brave until the shadows begin to fall. Pretty soon you feel a little hand stealing into yours and you hear a little voice say, "Daddy I'm scared. Take me up." That's what we sell security for--widows- and children. Some even unborn today will have future security if you as an insurance man do your job well.

Keep in mind to sell first with your heart and then with your head. You will find that while your head may tell you to sell the prospect what may be more to your interest, your heart will lead you to present to your prospect a contract which will benefit his family in a way that you know is right. When you sell with your heart, your motivation for his purchasing life insurance almost comes to you automatically because you will feel and sense the keen responsibility each has to his own. *** People age 60 and older in several states can now dial up free advice on wills, tenants' rights and other issues, compliments of the American Association of Retired Persons and the Administration on Aging. It is also for us to appreciate the freedom we enjoy because we have never been without it.

Possibly, if more of our men and our women were able to appreciate our freedom, there would be more of them taking advantage of that privilege of joining SPJST! 0** Thanksgiving Day was an event celebrated by numerous fortunate families who enjoyed the traditional meal with all the trimmings, watched the parades and sports on television and also enjoyed the most welcome rain in West.

Our wishes are that all who read this had a peaceful, healthy, satistactory day, wherever, and that common sense will prevail and peace will continue -then we can really be thankful!

Lodge No. 1, Fayetteville The future looks good for Fayetteville Lodge No. 1 as we welcome two new members which increases the number of our youth in this lodge.

They are Robyn Kovar (age 1 year and 10 months) and her brother, Ross Kovar (age 5 months) whose parents are Randy and Kim Kovar of Fayetteville.

We were recently advised of the loss of one of our members, Mr. Leslie D. Boelsche of La Grange. He was a member of the SPJST for 26 years. We wish to extend our sympathy to his family.

We also want to take this opportunity to remind everyone of the next meeting scheduled for December 16 from 2 to 5 p.m. at the SPJST Hall. This will be our fun-filled Christmas Party which will surely put everyone in the holiday spirit. We want everyone to

Dear Members: Our lodge held its monthly meeting on Sunday, November 11, 1990 at Mr. Gatti ' s.

President Annie Vahalik called the meeting to order, followed by the pledge to the flag led by Nicholas Vahalik.

Janell Chudej read a Resolution of Sympathy for our departed member, Helen V. May. Corresponding Secretary Erwin Holy read the minutes to the last meeting and the correspondence he had received.

Treasurer Helen Zabransky gave her usual treasurer's report.

President Vahalik announced that SYD Claudette Reese would be in Hallettsville on Thursday, November 15 to meet with our youth leaders and a representative from Sweet Home lodge to re-organized the youth clubs. Also that same evening an FAC Workshop by State Fraternal Coordinator Frank Klinkovsky will be held at the Victoria Bank and Trust-Hallettsville meeting room for the lodges in the north part of District VI. Lodge FAC Gaye Galetka read her correspondence including a letter on the Scholarship Fund Drive going on now. The lodge voted to give $25 being for each member present. Also, we will, again, purchase two gifts for the Deputy Santa Program. The members voted to contribute $100 to the Hallettsville United Way. Election of officers followed with the present officers being re-elected to serve another year.

Plans were made for our Christmas Party in December followed by adjournment.

October, November and December birthdays were honored. Those present were Janell Chudej, Vicky Zak, Evelyn Holy and Anton Bolom. The birthday cake was won by Janell Chudej.

The door prize winner was Annie Vahalik. The lodge then treated the members to pizza and drinks. The birthday cake was also served and enjoyed.

Our next meeting will be Sunday, December 9 at Mr. Gatti's beginning at 2 p.m. Following the meeting, our Christmas Party will be held beginning with the youth in a short program, followed by singing and a visit from Santa Claus. Games are planned.

The president welcomed all to this meeting and appreciation day. We had a nice attendance for the noon meal and meeting, also some more came in the afternoon.

Reading of the minutes of our last meeting was by Karen Kroll for Barbara Hykel Karen also gave her treasurer's report, followed by Financial Secretary George Straten reporting and he also reported on the trustees' meeting which was held Friday night, November 9 and said that there were some discussions about a few things that will take place in the future. The Lodge 6 Christmas Party was set for Sunday, Decembe*2; also on this date, we will have our 14)dge 6 meeting at I p.m. and election of officers.

All members are asked to make a special effort to be sure and come vote for the officers of your choice. Following the meeting will be a turkey and dressing with all the trimmings meal, plus sweets and drinks provided by our lodge. All members and their families are cordially invited and the sisters are asked to bring sweets as always.

We will have a short program by the youth and then a visit by the good "ole Saint Nick" with his big white bag of goodies he carries on his back to give to the children and also our lodge will pass out bags with fruits and candy.

A reminder to all . Bring exchange gifts to be placed under the Christmas tree to be passed out to the ones you wish to give them to.

Friday night, November 26, a Halloween Party was held for the youngsters and there were a few spooks dressed up and three prizes were given to the three best dressed; also at this lodge meeting, we had a former youth club member, Sheryl Brem, receiving a check presented to her by Bobby Dobecka in memory of his sister, Teresa Dobecka, from the scholarship fund. Sheryl is now attending MCC (college) in Waco, Texas.

It was time for door prizes. Today's door prize winner was Robert Dobecka.

The other fun prizes are as follows: Progressive for $10, 1st--Clement Dudik, 2nd--Gary Polansky; neither of these two were present.

Lodge

Lodge No. 63, Sweet Home will hold its monthly meeting and Christmas Social on December 2, 1990 at the Sweet Home Community Center. This date is a departure from our usual third Sunday because of other activities taking place at that time. There will also be a time change.

We will begin our activities at 12 noon with a social hour. A chili meal will then be served at 1 p.m. After the meal, our business meeting will be held. The meeting will be followed by our Christmas Party.

This is our most important meeting of the year because officers will be elected and committee people selected.

Plans for activities for 1991 will also be discussed.

Someone with a birthday in October, November or December will win a birthday cake baked by Millie Kutac.

Door prizes will be drawn.

The Christmas Party will consist of exchanging gifts. The price range is $2.00 - $2.25, again. There will be separate boxes for men, women and children. Please label your gift so we know which box it will go in.

Liquid refreshments will be served throughout the afternoon, courtesy of the lodge. Members are asked to bring a dessert or sweet for serving with the meal or with coffee in the afternoon.

You do not have to bring a side dish.

Lodge No 81, Needville A congenial group of fifty members and friends gathered at the lodge hall in Needville on Sunday, November 18, 1990 for the regular monthly meeting and election of officers for 1991.

At 12:00 noon, we enjoyed a delicious Thanksgiving dinner of turkey, dressing and sausage. A variety of tasty vegetables and salads completed the meal. The dessert table was laden with many delicacies to choose from, as usual. Our thanks to all the good sisters who brought the food and pastries. Special thanks go to Benita Walzel and Mary Werner; Benita baked the turkey and made the gravy while Mary prepared the dressing and brought the sausage.

Following dinner, President Adolph Macha called the business meeting to order. All officers were present for roll call. Ruth Ann Laza led us in the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag. A moment of silence was observed in memory of our departed Sister Louise Lubojacky. Heartfelt sympathy is extended to her family.

President Macha welcomed our guests and visitors from other lodges.

These included our District V Director Louis Hanus and Mrs. Hanus. With us from Rosenberg were Jerry and Frances Kubala, the Louis Havelkas, Bill and Freda Miller, Anita and Lloyd Zwahr, Edna Woytek and the Julius Matulas, Jr. Some of these folks are members of Lodge No. 81 whom we were happy to see after a long absence.

These consisted of the secretary's October minutes and financial minutes read by Mary Werner, Willie Mae Kuykendall's treasurer's report and Brother Gilbert Walzel's detailed report on the October Special Fund activities.

Secretary Werner read thank you letters from the Needville Senior Citizens Meal Center, the Volunteer Council of the Richmond Sfate School, the Fort Bend County Units of the Muscular Dystrophy Association and the March of Dimes. President Macha read a note of thanks to members from Sister Mary Werner.

Members send best wishes to Brother Odell Michalec who is on our sick list.

Brother Michalec is in the skilled nursing center of Polly Ryon Hospital in Richmond, Texas.

President Macha read a letter from the Supreme Lodge's Vice President ernard Gebala, stressing the importance of sales representatives in the growth of a lodge. To be a lodge member, one must be a policy holder; therefore, our future growth depends on the addition of new members. The vice president of a local lodge should spearhead the obtaining of sales representatives. We, the members can all help our Vice President Edwin Susan and our sales representatives by giving them leads to possible new members.

Under new business, it was decided to add the lodge phone number to the outdoor bulletin board.

Members voted to send Christmas fruit to the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home in Needville. Apples and oranges will be delivered by President Macha in midDecember.

Since the next meeting falls on Sunday, December 16, members voted to have a Christmas tree with bags of goodies and ten door prizes of $5.00 each. As usual, we will begin at 12:00 noon with turkey, dressing and ham furnished by the lodge; vegetables,

salads and desserts brought by the lodge sisters.

The business meeting following dinner will include the installation of officers for 1991 by District V Director Louis Hanus. We are also looking forward to a visit from Santa. A special invitation is being mailed to him at the North Pole.

Dear Members: On December 2nd, Lodge Karel JonaS/ will hold its annual meeting at 2 p.m. in its lodge hall home. This means the agenda will have the regular reports that are scheduled, along with the setting of donations, election of officers for the ensuing year of 1991 and other items that have to be placed into order before the new year. It is urged that as many members, who can, to be present so a proper quorum will be on hand.

Upon the adjournment of the business meeting, the fraternal hour with luncheon will convene.

The regular monthly meeting on November 4th had a quorum present.

Reports were accepted with no fanfare.

One motion was made and passed.

Sunshine Committee Mydell Grochoske reported that her mother, Mrs. Mary Vacek, was in the hospital, Martha Pustejovsky has been in the hospital twice for back surgery, Trudy Goerig has been in the hospital and had a pacemaker put in and also had eye surgery, and Joe Janecka had back surgery and is in a body cast which he may have to have on for four months.

We wish all of them a speedy recovery.

Friendship Club Fort Worth Dear Members and Friends: Our November meeting was called to order by President Jo Prochaska and she led us reciting the pledge to our flag and the members remained standing for a moment of silence in honor of Mary (Hejl) Hale, a long time member. May she rest in peace.

Our Secretary Merel Kovar's report was approved as read and our Treasurer Lydia Alholm also gave a good report.

Our Sunshine Chairperson Anna Johnson reported on all cards and Mass cards sent.

We are asked to bring canned goods or anything to help the Food Bank of the St. Thomas Catholic Church for Christmas. Let's remember the needy.

We will also have election of officers at our December 5th meeting and all who want to participate in gifts for the tree, bring a $5 gift.

We will have ham at our luncheon and bring a covered dish, salad or pastry.

We received the sad news last night (November 17) that Janet Steelman passed away suddenly; just at our October meeting her mother Elma Anderson, announced how well she was doing with her computer and she was taken off the critical list. We extend our heartfelt sympathy to the family and may she rest in peace.

A group of our members and friends attended the Ladies Circle of Lodge No. 92's luncheon at the Lotus Restaurant. The Hat Contest was great, the food delicious and, best of all, the fellowship; got to be with long time friends. Thanks for having us.

We extend our get well wishes to Minnie Bell.

Happy Birthday went to Geneviene Earle, Elma Anderson, Joe Milan , Ida Garrett, Merel Kovar and our guest, Victor Murphy. May you all have many more.

County Chapter. CHS Of Texas News Harris

The Harris County Chapter of the Czech Heritage Society of Texas held its November meeting in conjunction with the Fourth Annual Gulf Coast Czech Festival on Saturday, November

Wednesday, November 28, 1990—VESTNIK/9 3, at the facility of SPJST Lodge No. 172 in Pasadena. The meeting was attended by a record number of members and visitors..

The business portion of the meeting was followed by a very impressive demonstration of the traditional "Unveiling of the Bride." The demonstration was presented by Mr. and Mrs. Joe Janak of Hallettsville. The Janaks were assisted by Mr. and Mrs. Ed Krpec of Houston, who played the roles of bride and groom. The musical accompaniment was furnished by the Galveston County Czech Heritage Band.

Several new members were signed up during the festival. Membership is now over 170. The chapter is looking forward to a great new year, expecting to grow well beyond 200 members in 1991.

The Fourth Annual Gulf Coast Czech Festival, which was sponsored by the Harris County Chapter CHS of Texas, the Texas Chapter of POLK of A, the San Jacinto College Czech Club and SPJST Lodge No. 172 was a great success, even though Sunday's weather was a little bit on the uncooperative side. A Polka/Czech Mass was celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, November 4, by Father Joseph Hybner of Victoria in honor of the late John L. Morkovsky, former Catholic Bishop of Diocese.

Bishop Morkovsky was a member of the Harris County Chapter. The theme of this year's festival was polka and waltz music, featuring a battle dance on Saturday with music furnished by Harry Czamek and the Texas Dutchmen and James Stryk and the Moonriders.

Sunday's entertainment featured the Choral Group from SPJST Lodge No. 88, the Galveston County Czech, Heritage Band, the Czech Heritage Singers of Galveston County, the traditional Parade of Costumes, and dancing to the Czech Concert Orchestra of SPJST Lodge No. 88 and the Leroy Matocha Orchestra of Fayetteville. A Czech-style country stew dinner was served at noon on Sunday. The heritage display room, where all sorts of Czech memorabilia and family histories were displayed, was open to the public all Sunday afternoon.

A great time was had by all who came and participated in the festival's activities. Plans for next year's festival are already underway. The chapter is looking forward to a bigger and better festival in 1991. Next year's festival will be held on Saturday, November 2 and Sunday, November 3. Start making your plans now to be with us in 1991.

Amy Reid led the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag and members remained standing for a moment of silent prayer. The SPJST Youth Club Motto was then recited.

The register was read. There were 13 members present. Guests introduced were Carol and Chris Williams.

The minutes were read and approved.

There was no correspondence.

Jennifer Ashcraft gave the treasurer's report. The new balance was $247.98.

We would like to welcome two new members. Steven Carpenter, a fifth grader at Rogers Elementary and Tommy Joe Williams, a fourth grader at Rogers Elementary. Welcome to SPJST! We discussed the Christmas Party and Program to be held on Sunday, December 9th. Our Youth Leader Shirley Ashcraft will be contacting youth members about program practices.

Also, names were drawn for Christmas gifts at the meeting. A price limit of $5 was suggested for the gifts.

The youth club bake sales at social games are going extremely well.

Thanks to everyone for their time and support.

Our meeting was adjourned at 7:35 p.m. Then youth members worked on the Vestnik projects and letters to our soldiers in Saudi Arabia.

November birthdays are: Jeffrey Ashcraft, (November 10) and Chad Bruggman (November 29).

Mr. Bell was born in Moody to Thelbert and Frances Bell. He married Claudia Lewis on May 24, 1958 in Temple. He attended Temple Junior College and graduated from the University of Colorado and the American Institute of Banking. He was formerly the executive vice president and cashier of Texas American Bank in Temple. He was also past chairman of the operation's division and ex-officio member of the Board of Directors of the Texas Bankers Association: a past Board member of the Denison Lions Club, a former Board member of the Temple Housing Board of Adjustments and Appeals and vice president of the Temple Law Enforcement Advisory Board.

Mr. Bell also served as chairman of the City of Temple Mental Rehabilitation Screening Committee.

He was a life member of the Texas Association of Businesses.

He served in the United States Air Force, was a private pilot and a member of Memorial Baptist Church of Temple.

Services for Mr. Bell were held Wednesday at Memorial Baptist Church in Temple with the Rev. Edwin Crawford and Rev. Eugene Hoover officiating.

Survivors include his wife, Claudia Bell of Temple; one son, Michael Bell of Temple; one daughter, Teri Snyder of Temple; his father, Thelbert Bell of Temple; his mother, Frances Thornburg of Waco: one brother, J.B. two and Houston; Bell of grandchildren.

Graveside services for Jerry "John" Kotrla were held at 11 a.m. at the Seaton Brethren Church with the Rev. Eugene Kotrla officiating.

Mr. Kotrla was born in 1904 at Ellinger, Texas to John and Frances Kotrla. He worked in a railroad camp in Colorado from 1920 to 1926 and moved back to Bell County, Texas in 1928. He married Mary Martinek in December 1929. He was a farmer in Rogers until his retirement in 1972.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Kotrla.

Survivors include his sister, Vlasta Kotrla of Taylor and two brothers, Frank Kotrla of Taylor and John Larence of Taylor.

Expression of Sympathy The members and officers of SPJST Lodge No. 25, Ennis wish to express deepest sympathy to the family of our departed brother ALBIN A. VAVRA. Mass of Christian Burial for Albin A. Vavra, 81, was celebrated at 12 noon Tuesday in St. Johns Catholic Church with Rev. Ernie Torres as celebrant.

Rosary was recited at 7 p.m. Monday in Keever Chapel. Interment was in St. Joseph's Cemetery under the direction of J.E. Keever Mortuary with the following serving as pallbearers: Michael Prachyl, Stephen Prachyl, Danny Vavra, Cathy Prachyl, Christi Vavra, Lawrence Slovacek, Leslie Kubin and Charles Yowell.

Brother Vavra died Sunday at the Baylor Medical Center in Ennis after an extended illness.

He was born January 25, 1909 in Bryan, Texas to Albert and Frances Barak. Vavra. He moved to Ennis in 1915 with his parents. He attended school in Alma, Crisp and Garrett communities. After marriage, they lived in Alma. In 1943 he was employed by Todd Implement Company. In 1947 they moved to Ennis. He retired in 1974 as parts manager for Lotespeck Bond.

Brother Vavra was a member of St. Johns Catholic Church, an associate member of the KJT and a 50-year member of the SPJST. He was Past Vice President of the St. Joseph's Cemetery Association.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Bill Vavra of Ennis; a daughter, Mrs. Dorothy Prachyl of Ennis; five grandchildren; also five greatgrandchildren and three sisters, Mrs. Angeline Slovacek of Ennis, Mrs. Mary Knize of Denver and Mrs. Vickie Yowell of Ennis.

May he rest in eternal peace and may his memory remain with us forever.

Brother Kouba died Wednesday morning at the Baylor Medical Center in Ennis.

He was born January 4, 1912 in Ennis to John M. and Marie Hoza Kouba. He was reared in Ennis and at-

tended St. John's Schools. He was employed by Southern-Pacific Railroad as a machinist.

On October 4, 1961 he was married to Mrs. Fannie Kate Bell of Ennis.

After their marriage they lived in Ennis. He retired in 1974 after 39 years of service.

He was a member of St. John's Catholic Church and the SPJST Lodge No. 25.

Survivors include his wife, Fannie Kouba of Ennis; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Jane Smith of Rockwall and Mrs. Peggy Genthner of Conroe; four grandchildren, four greatgrandchildren; a brother, Frank Kouba of Houston; a sister, Julie Morris of Dallas, plus several nieces and nephews.

Adolph and Helen Matocha of 1188 E. Oak Street in La Grange were recently delighted by having their picture on the front page of Money magazine and also were featured in a story.

I realized that this man is happier than any pin-striped power luncher at

the Four Seasons in New York or poolside dealmaker at the Beverly Hills Hotel. Adolph Matocha's dream came true. So haVe a lot of others who unfold out of sight of the evening news.

There are many rooms in the mansion of America, and I came home convinced that we take too much both good and bad - for granted in a land energized by so many achieveable dreams.

Donna J. Migl, Dennis Vanek Exchange Vows Donna Jean Migl and Dennis Ray Vanek, both of Victoria, were united in marriage Saturday at 1 p.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church. Rev. Don Ruppert and Rev. James L. Carlson coofficiated over the double-ring ceremony.

The bride is the daughter of Mrs. Rose Lee Migl of Placedo and the late Marvin L. Migl. The groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Matt S. Vanek of Victoria.

Organist Mrs. Mary Jo Kinghom played "Trumpet Voluntary," "Bridal Chorus," "Marche" and played for Rev. Ruppert who sang the "The Lord's Prayer." Soloist Scott Wilkinson sang "To Me," "Loving You," "I've Waisted a Lifetime," "Let It Be Me," "The Theme From Ice Castles," and "The Wedding Song."

Given into marriage by her brother, Denny Migl, the bride chose a formal gown fashioned of white satin. The modified wedding band neckline was banded with re-embroidered Alencon lace and pearl dangles. The bodice featured a yoke of sheer net traced with lace and seed pearls. The gown held long sleeves enhanced with lace motifs which came to points over the hands and fastened with bridal buttons. The basque waist dipped to a full skirt

which fell to a pointed border of beaded Alencon lace and swept into a cathedral-length train which was enhanced with sequined motifs.

The bride wore a crescent-shaped headpiece of white silk flowers and pearl loops. The ruffled back pouf held a blusher and fingertip-length veil of silk illusion with rolled edges. The headpiece was accented at the back with strands of lily of the valley. She wore diamond earrings, a gift from the groom.

The bride carried a cascade bouquet of fresh large white roses, white snapdragons, white freesia, monte casino, white lipto and white genestra accented with pearl sprigs and English ivy streamers.

Mrs. Darla Stocker attended her sister as matron of honor. Bridesmaids were Mrs. Mary Vanek, Mrs. Monica Vanek, Shirley Parenica, Mrs. Gayle Parenica and Tracey Marshall.

The flower girl was Mallory Stocker, and the ring bearer was Randy Hammack.
