Mini - Museum Goes To Ennis The mini - museum traveled to Ennis · for the Ellis County Czech Heritage Society meeting held at SPJST lodge No. 25, in Ennis,· on March 28th.

The Miss Agnes Houdek dolls, woodcarvings, and colored "kraslice" eggs were displayed and the video, "Czech Within a Texas Oleckerboard" was shown 'to the audience by Thelma Groppell, curator of SPJST Museum.

Pat Fowler, president · of Ellis County Czech Heritage Society; Thelma Groppell, and Cyril (Sid) Pokladnikpresented a program on the museum, on Czech heritage and genealogy to approximately twenty five persons.

Uncorrected Minutes Of District VI Spring Meeting The spring meeting of SPJST District VI was held at the Moravia Parish Hall on March 25, 1990, with lodge No. 23 - Moravia hosting.

The meeting was called to order by District President Katherine Wokaty at 2:00p.m.

The colors were presented and the Pledge of Allegiance was led by District VI Flag Bearers Kim Kacal and Danny Borak. lodge No. 23 President Albert Olsovsky welcomed everyone and wished them an enjoyable afternoon.

District First Vice President Annie Vahalikresponded.

District VI secretary read the list of deceased members since our last spring meeting. A tribute to deceased members was read by District VI SecondVice President Janek Marek.

First Vice President Annie Vahalik introduced the following guests and dignitaries: Supreme lodge Vice President Bernie Gebala, District IV Director Stanley Broz and his wife, Martha, State Field Representatives

Jim Wiest and Jerome Hlavaty, and, District VI Director Matt Vanek and his wife, Henrietta. District Rest Homes Director Erwin Holy was absent due to illness but sent his best wishes.

President Wokaty acknowledged the local lodge Fraternalists of the Year in our District: lodge No. 28 -- Lillie Nezval lodge No. 30 -- Lottie Krutilek lodge No. 32 -- Ella Arnold lodge No. 40 -"' I.andis "Dutch" Kopecky . lodge No. 148 -- Emil Morris District VI Youth Counselor Anita Royegave her financial report. There was a beginning balance, in the Youth Fund, of $3,897.46. Expenses were $465.00at the spring meeting, $431.49 at the fall meeting, $40.00 for the Fraternal Congress, postage was $25.00and the YAD cost -- $1,346.02.

Incomefrom the Wheel - of - Fortune game was $125.80. This left a balance of $1,458.42.

The District Camp Fund received $3,386.14, spent $3,340.38, leaving a balance of $45.76.

DYC Anita Roye introduced the followingyouth leaders: Lodge No. 30 -- Georgia Dorotik lodge No. 32 -- Frances Motal lodge No. 40 -- Mary Ann Karasek DYC Roye also introduced State Queen Stephanie Roye and District VI King Darren Dybala. The youth leaders' retreat was upcoming and this year's camp would be at Camp Lone Star for · four days and three nights.

All District VI officers responded to roll call of officers. Absent from the standing committees were Substitute Director Erwin Holy, Substitute By Law Committee Mike Ahlstrom and PublicationCommittee Sophie Dybala.

Fourteen lodges responded to roll call oflodges.

The minutes were read and approved as corrected.

Fifty - year pin recipients were acknowledged; Marvin' Cernik and Doris Rektorik from lodge No. 23, Moravia were present.

District VI Treasurer A.J. (Tony) Kelner gave the following treasurer's report: As of October 29, 1989, there was a beginning balance of $691.50, incomewas $661.30plus a $25 refund; expenses were $940, leaving a balance, as· of March 25, 1990, of $437.80, in the General Expense Fund.

District VI Director Matt Vanek brought greetings from the Home

Wednesday, May 9, 1990-VĚSTNÍK/5 Office. He stated that the SPJST is going through a lot of changes because there is not as much of a profit margin as it was before due to

the Annuity and Universal life plans.

The SPJST has $32 million in loan investments for real estate. A person nowhas to be a member for 90 days to apply for a loan. There are also commercial loans available for business property. An independent audit was recently made and all seemed in order.

The restoration work at Moraviaand Velehrad was progressing. lodge No. 1, Fayettevillehad recently added two new sales representatives.

Scholarshipswere available.

Recently, Patrick and Rose Patek, President and Secretary - Treasurer of the Stephen and Mary Birch Society, donated $100,000to the Czech Chair.

Seventy - one percent of the lodges were now on direct billing and if any other lodge is interested, they should contact Jerry Mikulas at the Home Office.Within the next three months, an IBMcomputer would be purchased for the Home Office.

Director Vanek concluded by presenting incentive checks to the sales representatives, with special recognition being given to Jeff Chunda and Albert Olsovsky.

Supreme lodge Vice President Bernie Gebala gave the report from the HomeOffice.He presented checks of $800to the General Expense Fund, $2,696.50to the Camp Fund, and $250 · for the YAD. He stated that because we now have interest - sensitive policies, our margin of profit is much less. Fraternal activities are what sets us apart from other insurance companies. Our goal is to get the member the most money back as possible. To achieve this, we must all work together. If we have any questions, we should contact the district director or the various committee people in our district. The key word is "communication."

He concluded by saying the SPJST is in solid financial shape.

There was no rest home report due to the absence of the rest home director.

State Field Representative Jerome Hlavaty gave his report; through February -- $812,500 worth of insurance was sold, with an earned premium of $13,703.04. Top sales representatives in earned premiums in January were Mary Matula and Adolph Motal and tops in most policies sold were Ray Pilgrim and Albert Olsovsky. He asked sales representatives who were present to be recognized and fourteen responded. On April 4th, a training class would be held in Hillje and one would be held April 5th at the Shiner Fire Station.

State Field Representative Hlavaty presented some statistics on the cost of policies and how they have changed with the new tables. Funeral and medicalexpenses are going up so he is recommending larger policies. There are many insurance plans available, includingLonePay and Term policies.

The Modified Whole life plans replaced the JT plan. Interest sensitive products are also available.

Joe Nezval made a motion that we eliminate the position of second vice president of the district and make that office a FAC position. Frankie Vanek seconded it and the motion passed.

The Nominating Committee consisting of Joe Nezval and Frankie Vanek, presented the following slate of officers: President -- Annie Vahalík 1st Vice President -- Jo Ann Fuchik

All of these were voted on separately, asking for nominations from the floor. The entire slate of officerswas elected by acclamation.

Georgia Dorotík asked if the assistant youth counselor should also be elected. She was told that we have sometimes elected them and sometimes they have been appointed.

Karen Kaspar said she was elected at a previous district meeting.

Director Vanek said the By - laws state that it should be an elected position.

The Nominating Committee added Mary Ann Karasek as assistant youth counselorto their slate of officers. She was also elected by acclamation.

The Auditing Committee, composed of Rita Vanek, Leonard Macha and Annimae Merta, reported all books were in order and correct.

Rita Vanek, president of lodge No. 40, El Campo - Hillje said that all lodges paid their 10 cents a member to help defray costs of the fall social district meeting held at Hillje this past fall; $661.30came in and the cost of meal was $525.00; remainder of the money went into the General Expense Fund. lodge 4, Hallettsville said it would host the fall meeting, with the assistance of Lodge No. 63, Sweet Home and other lodges.

Joe Nezval said the Czech National Cemetery organization, which was recently featured in SVET, would meet on April 7 in East Bernard.

Katherine Wokaty announced that on October 3rd, the Czech Heritage Society would hold its annual Tarok Tournament at Victoria Community Center.

Emil Mareth said the Placedo and Inez lodges were holding their second annual PolkaFest on May 20th at Inez.

Matt Vanek and Albert Olsovsky presented 50 - year pins to Marvin Cernik and Doris Rektorik of lodge No. 23.

The youth program followed. Lenice Kaspar (lodge 30) danced to "God Bless the USA," also sang two songs followed by a dance performed by three young ladies.

Youth Counselor Rita Roye announced the state winner of the Camp T - Shirt contest was Stephanie Roye.

District IV Director Stanley Broz had a few remarks and installed the officers.

The meeting was adjourned. Door and other prizes were awarded.

Happenings At Lodge No. 183,

Arlington, Texas Dear Members and Friends: Can you believe all of the rain that we have received in the Central and North Central Texas area? April is historically the month 'for rain in our region and thus far we have certainly received our share. I'm sure that when summer arrivesand it becomeshot, dry and parched, wewillwishthat the rains had continued to cool off our territory.

Despite the promises of politicians, we'll never achieve an equal and satisfactory distribution of wealth, rainfall or parking spaces.

There are a couple of items that I would like to remind all active members; there will be NO MEETING on Sunday, May 13th due to it being Mother's Day. Our next regularly scheduled meeting will occur in JUNE on the second Sunday, the 10th.

Please be sure to attend this meeting since we will have some "catching up" to do.

Also, please remember that Saturday evening, May 19th beginning at 8:30 p.m., the C&W band, Silverado, will be playing for our second dance for the month of May. A fair crowd is expected 'for this dance to help one of our members celebrate a birthday. With some of today's dance steps you don't know if the guy on the floor is a good dancer or has tied on a good drunk.

Towards the latter parť of 1989, an organization was formed in Arlington to promote vendors associated with wedding ceremonies. It is called the Arlington Wedding Association.

Lodge183~ ofArlington, was invited to join this group and I have been attending their meetings · since their inauguration. Their purpose is to group together and recommend such vendors as photographers, caterers, wedding boutiques and · other businesses associated with wedding productions. Three vendors· of each classificationare allowed'to belong to this elite group. As a couple attends to the normal procedures· of ceremony preparation, and while they are purchasing wedding clothes, for example, they ask if the store can recommenda photographer or caterer, then the clothier will recommend someone from the association group.

Our lodge is in the group because, many times, our facilities are rented out for wedding receptions.

We feel that this is a worthwhile organizationand we feel strongly that it will lead to a good number· of recommendations ·for hall rentals in the near future.

Right now, a brochure is being prepared by the association, and we will be placing pictures of our facility in the pamphlet.

With the wedding season fixing to jump into high gear, we are anticipating a good period. of rental activity. We were requireďto pay the initial year's dues and we have paid some advertising expenses for newspaper publicizing. We will also share in the cost· of the brochure layout, but we feel that this will be moneywellworth spent. The return on investment should be excellent.

I'm sure that you all realize that some womenbelieve that the secret of a happy marriage is doing things together -- like · opening a joint checking account.

The Family Night held· on April 27th, was livelyand there were twenty individualswho came 'to participate in

the good fun. Charlie Bragg and his son - in - law, Russell, were honored as havingbirthdays in the last week of April. Lodge 183 purchased a ton of fried chicken and there were many other delicious dishes prepared and brought by all the beautiful young ladies who attended this night of joviality. After the great meal, everyone found themselves involved in some type of entertaining diversion such as "42," Taroky, Straight dominoes, or the popular "10,000" game. Aroyal time was had by all who participated.

The spotlight on this letter's game night worker is John Pustejovsky.

Since coming to our lodge, John has made his presence·known by jumping in and givinga helping hand wherever it was required. He is retired but that onlygave him more time to be active.

He assists his son with the house building business that he began years before.

John and his wife, Irene, both are very energetic members of our lodge and have just christened a new grandchild. (Together they make several trips to Las Vegas each year.

Nexttime you see John, ask him about one of his most recent trips and the "horse" on the highway.)

He has served as an officer of the lodge several times in the past and is currently the lodge treasurer. He performed the duties as bar chairman for a couple of years and helped straighten up a critical situation. He works almost every occasion that we hold our game night and can alwaysbe depended upon for help. Whenever we hold a lodge "clean-up" party, John and Irene are the first ones there and he is already painting, doing necessary carpenter work, general clean-up and whatever else is required.

Inez Greenlees has stated that John and Irene have made her president's tenure more tolerant because of their "ad hoc" finance meetings at which they discuss financial matters of the lodge, especially expenditures. John told me once that when some people retire it's going to be mightly hard to tell the difference.

Five members of Lodge 183 attended the District III meeting held at Burleson Lodge 180, on April 29th.

Those attending were Inez Greenless, Betty and B.J. Hlavaty, my daughter Shelby Sill, and myself. There were approximately 80 to 90 individuals representing the different lodges in District III. Dignitaries present included Supreme Lodge Vice President Bernard Gebala, Vestnik Editor Rudy Sefcik, District III Director Cyril Pokladník, State Field Representative Jim Wiest, officers of District III,·as well as those officers and members from the lodges in District III. Before the meeting began, coffee and kolaches were available. The meeting began and followed the agenda. Minutes from the previous district meeting were considered and accepted and various · officers gave their.reports.

We broke for lunch and a magnificent meal was prepared, and everyone served themselves baked turkey and dressing with all the trimmings, all you could hold. Justice is not done by simply saying that it was delicious.

The meeting continued after lunch and various committees gave their reports. New officers of District III were elected and installed 'for the fall meeting which will take place in the Waco area. The meeting was adjourned and a quilting contest was held as well as a horseshoe pitching contest.

B.J. Hlavaty and his wife Betty, Roberts, Sister Annie Trojacek and Joe Stepan, brother of Sister Vallie told me that their granddaughter Stephanie Schneider, was having a Tupy.

I surely would not want 'to climb those steep steps every day.

Czech Day At State Fair Of Texas The American - Czech Culture Society is making plans ·for the 1990 Czech Day at the State Fair of Texas in Dallas. The Czech Day will be held on Sunday, October 7, 1990. Tannich - Brovec Reunion Held In NewTaiton The 24th annual Tannich - Brovec reunion was held on April 22, 1990 at 11 a.m. at New Taiton Hall and was a huge success.

Cash door prizes were given to Carl Petersen, Evelyn Jurecka, Incas Maerz and Anne Horak.

The gift · for the farthest traveled went to J.B. and Martha Freily from Corpus Christi, Texas.

The oldest person in attendance, who received a gift, was lgnac Shimek who is 85 years old.

The youngest person to receive a gift was James Anhaiser who is 7Y2 months old.

There were approximately 100 people at this year's reunion.

Our auction was really a big success, thanks 'to all those who donated items . and to those who bought them, Next year' s reuriion is scheduled 'for April 21, 1991.

*** Dear Leaders, Parents and Youth Oub Members: Summer is just around the corner and the Youth Program has made a few important changes and additions for the 1990 - 1991 Youth Year beginning on June 1, 1990.

The YAD age categories will be as follows: 6 - 8, 9 - 11, 12 - 14 and 15 - 17 The group categories· will remain the same: 6 - 12 and 13 - 17.

The State Special Category for 1990 is Story Telling. Thé youth will be

judged on spontaneity, originality and naturalness of delivery. I will need the State YAD Special Category card turned in to me by your District's YAD. I will notify participant (via the Vestnik) on the times that they will compete. The prizes for State YAD Special Category are as follows: Prizes will be awarded · for first, second and third prizes in all age divisions: 1st place -- trophy 2nd place -- red rosette 3rd place -- white rosette Be aware that a youth must earn a minimum of 800 points to be eligible to earn merit monies for the new youth year.

Queen and King participants must submit a copy of their royalty speech to their DYC prior to competition.

The April 11, 1990meeting of Lodge No. 177 Youth Club was called to order at 6:10 p.m. by President Kim McNeill.

Eric Tomastik led the Pledge · of Allegiance to the flag.

There were eight members and three adults present.

There were no guests present.

Michael Vansa gave the treasurer's report and the balance is $481.65.

There were no fund - raisers planned for this month.

The members enjoyed having cokes and candy for refreshments.

Letters From The Youth District V Youth Take Field Trip On April 21, 1990 Lodges 172, 142 and 88 went to Huntsville to see the Sam Houston Folk Fest and saw where and how he and his family lived and we also saw how toys, quilts, wood fur­ niture and things like that were made long ago.

After we left the folk fest, we went and ate our lunch at the city park.

When we finished· our lunch, we drove to Sam Houston 's grave and visited other graves which were there.

Then we went to the prison museum and saw a model of the Huntsville Prison. They had other things on . display such as bullet proof helments that were tested on inmates. They also had homemade weapons such as knives and guns; some· of the guns were carved from wood and painted to look real. The museum also had a prison cell and "Old Sparky," the electric chair. The assistant warden was there from the prison and answered our questions.

After we left the museum, we

Camp is June 3 through 6 in la Grange and members will order T Shirts to wear. District VI Youth Achievement Day is July 29th in Taiton. New rule books were passed out and the changes were discussed.

Decorated eggs were judged and the winners were as follows: (Juniors): Jody Krpec - first, Jared Dybala - second, Bryan Kutac - third.

(Seniors): Martha Bartos - first, Sharon Borak - second, Kim Kacal third.

Prizes were awarded to the winners.

Poems were read by Kim Kacal, Jared Dybala, Jody Krpec, Danny and Sharon Borak, Bryan Kutac and Martha Bartos.

Members worked on Easter baskets· for the nursing home. Refreshments were brought by Ilsa Reck.

The next meeting is at 7 p.m. on May 10th in the WCEC Edison Room.

All persons interested in finding their genealogy, regardless· of their ethnic origin are welcome to attend.

Project Book Lift I am organizing an airlift of books to Czechoslovakia. I have recently returned from Czechoslovakia, where I interviewed some of the luminaries of the 'Velvet' revolution. When I asked what Icould send them from America, without exception, the reply was: "Books ! " This is one of the most precious commodities to the Cechoslovaks. It was so important to them that they were willing to make copies of books that were banned such

as Jugian Psychology, Zen Buddhism, and The Gulag Archipelago.

I feel there is a strong story here.

Cechoslovaks gave the world a gift in their exhibition of · courage and compassion in this revolution, a gift in kind would be opening the doors to cultural exchange. Contact and information from the world is very important to them. They are starved for this contact and it could take a good deal of time before the channels are established for interchange with the world. They have very little literature in the way of humanities (Psychology, Philosophy, Sociology) and as far as current literature and plays, most of this type of material was banned. I would like artists and the American public to take part in this gift in donations of this nature and would like to have these personally in­ scribed from the donors to the Czech people with messages of encourage­ ment.

I interviewed Dr. Pstross of the International Affairs · of the Gvic Forum, and spoke to Mr. Havel's sister - in - law, who ran this department. I had been collecting articles from the American press (Time, Newsweek, etc.) on the events in the Eastern Bloc. This was the first time that they had seen · outside coverage and they placed my little cutout news articles in the National Archives. Where they have the freedoms now, they have riot the means to explore their connection with the outside world. I am appealing to the American Public for support in this pursuit. The things we so take for granted, can so make a difference.

Horak, která bydlela na navštívena, 45 členů a 1 O hostů; sestra adrese: 802 North Sherman, Ennis, Thelma Hrnčířová, ředitelka 7 okrsku Texas. Dopis, který tam zaslal, se byla naším hostem. ovšem vrátil zpět s douškou "Adresát Slavili jsme 73 roků od založení neznámý". Proto se obrátil o pomoc našeho řádu San Antonio číslo 133. na náš ústav a poskytl tyto údaje: p. Začali jsme s podaváním chutného Horákové je něco kolem 60 let. Její oběda ve 12.30hodin. rodiče žili ve Westu. Matka zemřela za President řádu Anthony Trilíček 2. světové války, otec John Mikulík zahájil jednání schůze v 1 hodinu 50 tam žil i po válce. minut. Všichni úředníci byli přítomni.

Krojovaná skupina na oslavě stých narozenin: sedící zleva doprava: Ludmila Vaculíková, Kristína (Macek) Eckelmanová, stojící zleva doprava: WiHa Mae červenka, Marie Janečková, Rose Steinmanová, Anežka Řezníčková a Jindřiška Červenková.

Krajanka se dožila stovky let Stovku roků oslavila v Mansfield domě odpočinku v plné tělesné i duševní svěžesti Kristina Macek Eckelmanová při této příležitosti si zavzpomínala na svoje mládí.

Narodila se 25. ledna 1890 a přišla

do Ameriky ve věku 15 let a po třech letech již otevřela podnik. Připlula na německé lodi "Kaiser Wilhelm Groser" a moře bylo velmi bouřlivé a cesta nebyla příjemná. Cestovaly společně s přítelkyní a když konečně uviděly Sochu svobody, tak obě plaka­ ly a když vstoupily na pevnou zemi, poklekly a děkovaly Pánu Bohu za šťastný příjezd do Ameriky.

Narodila se ve staré vlasti a v době jejího narození byl americkýmpresider

14/VĚSTNÍK-9. května 1990 tem Benjamin Harrison a když přijela do Ameriky Teddy Roosevelt byl právě presidentem.

Nejdřrve se uchytila jako služka v Novém Yorku a pak se zařídila krejčovskou dílnu a vyráběla ozdobné tašky. V jednu dobu zaměstnávala 75 děvčat. Po pěti letech se stala občankou a od té doby prožila mnoho změn, avšak i přes tu dlouhou dobu odloučení, přece jenom má místo pro starou vlast. Tehdy tam žil její bratr a sestra a nyní tam žije neteř.

Vzpomínka na domov ve staré vlasti vytlačila slzy v jejích očích.

V roce 1942 se provdala za Williama Eckelmana, vdovce se dvěma dětmi a začali pracovat v prodeji nemovitostí v New Yorku a později se přestěhovali na Floridu. O jejich manželství prohlá­ sila, že nikdy manžela nedirigovala a několikrát navštívila starou vlast. Má tam některé přátele a rodinu. Rovněž si ještě s některými dopisuje.

Ke konci života si přestěhovala na pozvání nevlastm'ho syna Williama do Fort Worth a ve volném čase se dívá na televisi, ale nerada se dívá na ty každodenní pořady všelijakých příběhů a zajímá se i o denní události.
